Trudging through Monday mornings and facing a new work or school week can be difficult enough, sometimes. But imagine if you were a hospital patient in need of blood. You might have a shift in perspective if someone you didn’t even know donated units of precious blood to help save your life … you might see every day – even hectic Mondays- as a gift. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, business, environmental, labor, and community leaders applauded the inclusion of $100 million in President Obama’s proposed FY16 Budget for the second section of the Metro Purple Line Extension Project, calling the action an important step in keeping Metro’s planned subway construction toward West Los Angeles on track. The Mayor also praised the President for including $230 million for Metro’s two existing New Starts projects – the Regional Connector and the first section of the Purple Line Extension ($115 million each). The proposed funding within the President’s U.S. Department of Transportation budget – if approved by Congress later this year – can be combined with L.A. County’s voterapproved Measure R sales tax revenue and could fund construction of Section Two, a 2.6-mile extension of the subway through Beverly Hills to Century City scheduled to open in 2026. Metro has already begun construction of Section 1 between Wilshire/ Western and Wilshire/La Cienega. A third and final subway section is planned to reach the Westwood/ VA Hospital in 2035. The second section of the project would build two new underground stations -- in downtown Beverly Hills near Wilshire/Rodeo and in Century City at Constellation/Avenue of the Stars. “I’ve made transportation funding a key focus of mine in Washington, and I want to thank President Obama for responding in such a big way to help us cut traffic, reduce air pollution, and shorten Please see page 3

Best-selling Authors Highlight Discussion of Classic LA Noir Novel Popular, noted local authors will entertain with a lively panel discussion on “Raymond Chandler, Noir, and Los Angeles in the 1940s” on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 7:00 pm. The event at the Sierra Madre Public Library is part of Sierra Madre’s 2015 One Book One City program throughout the month of February. This year’s book is Raymond Chandler’s L.A. Noir classic The Long Goodbye, published in 1953, featuring famous detective, Philip Marlow. Led by local historian Tom Tomlinson, panellists will be: • Denise Hamilton, best-selling author of five contemporary crime novels in the Eve Diamond series and The Last Embrace, set in 1949 Hollywood. Denise is editor of the Edgar award-winning short story anthologies Los Angeles Noir and Los An-
geles Noir 2: The Classics. • Judith Freeman is a novelist, essayist, critic, and short story writer. She is the author of, The Long Embrace: Raymond Chandler and The Woman He Loved. • Jervey Tervalon, an award-winning poet, screenwriter, and dramatist, is the author of All the Trouble You Need, Understand This, and the Los Angeles Times bestseller, Dead Above Ground. Another popular event originally scheduled for later in the month, the Scotch tasting is, sadly, sold out. Other activities in February include two fun contests. For those of you who aspire to be sleuths in the Philip Marlow tradition or writers in the style of Raymond Chandler, a scavenger hunt will have you tracking clues throughout Sierra Madre to qualify for some fun prizes. Entries are due by Feb. 28 at the
Library. To celebrate the wonderful first-person narrative style of Raymond Chandler a “Write Like Chandler” contest is being held through February 13, with the winner receiving a dinner for two at a local restaurant and the finalist entries published in “The Mountain Views News.” Visit the library for more information on how to enter these contests. Third Thursday Book Group will be discussing The Long Goodbye and all are invited to attend on February 19 at 11:00 am. Bloody Oranges!, a murder mystery Readers’ Theater production of farce by Phoebe Conn, will star you and your fellow guests. Join us for A Murder Mystery Party on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 7:00 pm. The event is free, but reservations must be made at the library by February 24, 2015.

commutes,” Mayor and Metro Chair Garcetti said. “Our transportation infrastructure initiative is now the nation’s largest public works program, putting tens of thousands of people to work and creating a better Los Angeles for today’s commuters and tomorrow’s workforce. As Mayor and Metro Chair, I am going to make sure we spend these dollars efficiently through tough oversight and sound management.” The long-awaited subway extension will provide a high-capacity, high-speed, dependable transit alternative for those traveling to and from the Westside — L.A.’s “second downtown.” More than 300,000 people travel into the Westside every day for work from areas throughout the county and beyond. Metro is continuing to pursue funding to complete the project to Westwood and accelerate the pace of construction. The Purple Line Extension Project is partially funded by the Measure R sales tax approved by voters in 2008 and can be used to leverage federal “New Starts” matching funds. Metro’s Long Range Transportation Plan for Los Angeles County commits $4.2 billion (in 2009 dollars) over the next 30 years to building the subway extension project. Metro is in the process of applying for a federal grant and loan that will be paired with Measure R funds to build Section Two of the project. The Federal Transit Administration recently gave Metro approval to begin preliminary engineering work. Construction for Section 1 of the project began late last year and pre-construction activities for the second section of the sub-

way are now underway. In January, Metro began performing potholing work in the Century City area to learn more about underground utilities there. Metro has also begun contacting tenants who may need to be relocated and is beginning the process of acquiring any properties needed to build in the area. Once built, Purple Line Extension riders will be able to travel from Downtown Los Angeles to the Westwood/UCLA station in 25 minutes. More than 78,000 daily project trips are projected to use the seven new stations. About Metro: Metro is a multimodal transportation agency that is actually three companies in one: a major operator that transports about 1.5 million boarding passengers on an average weekday on a fleet of 2,000 clean air buses and six rail lines; a major construction agency that oversees many bus, rail, highway and other mobility related building projects, and Metro is the lead transportation planning and programming agency for Los Angeles County. Overseeing one of the largest works programs in America, Metro is, literally, changing the urban landscape of the Los Angeles region. Dozens of transit, highway and other mobility projects, largely funded by Measure R, are under construction or in the planning stages. These include five new rail lines, the I-5 widening and other major projects. By the end of the event, 22 employees attempted to donate; 20 units of whole blood and one unit of red blood cells were received and will provide assistance for many patients in need. Red Cross Blood drives are hosted regularly for Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department employees at the Headquarters Building. The location provides a large pool of donors to help boost blood reserves and makes it convenient for coworkers to come in during a break. The Battle of the Badges blood drive was begun in 2007 as a friendly competition among Southern Californiabased law enforcement and fire fighting agencies, to see which agency could donate the largest quantity of blood units. The Pasadena Playhouse presents “A Conversation with Patricia Morison”
A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Ms. Morison was present this past September at the Opening Night of The Pasadena Playhouse’s KISS ME, KATE, starring Wayne Brady and Merle Dandridge and directed by Sheldon Epps.
