Mike Gatto Introduces DNA Privacy Bill
A government repository of the DNA of all children born? It sounds like something out of 20th Century dystopian fiction. Surely, that can’t happen here, right? Actually, millions of newborns each year provide a blood sample to the state, to be screened for congenital disorders. But what happens to it next is alarming. The blood (and DNA) samples are deposited into a biobank where they can be used by outside researchers (who pay), for tests that few parents know about or consent to. These samples contain the most sensitive personal information: our children’s genetic information. And the state is storing that information and selling it to outside entities. “Newborn screening is an incredible tool that has saved millions of newborns. But during an era of omnipresent intrusion in our lives, policymakers must take steps to safeguard our personal information, especially medical records, which are particularly personal,” said Assemblyman Gatto. “AB 170 will ensure that parents can protect their children’s privacy and can destroy infant-screening records after they have served their purpose.” Mike Gatto is the Chairman of the Consumer Protection and Privacy Committee, and the longest-serving current member of the State Assembly. He represents California’s 43rd Assembly District, which includes Burbank, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Montrose, and the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Atwater Village, East Hollywood, Franklin Hills, Hollywood Hills, Los Feliz, and Silver Lake. www.asm.ca.gov/ gatto

When an evening begins with a string ensemble playing ones favorite piece of music, it bodes well for the event. Such was the case with the empty house party for Pasadena’s Showcase House for the Arts. Each year the group which supports music through its instrumental music programs in the schools as well as many other music related programs throughout the San Gabriel Valley and the county, holds a party at its showcase house prior to work beginning. This year’s house is a repeat; It was the showcase house in 1993. And 20 plus years make a large difference in style. Faux marbling and the combination of pink and light green seem omnipresent. But these will soon give way to more period correct colors for the Tudor-influenced craftsman home. The designers plans are impressive. The ideas being

Rep. Adam Schiff May Mt. Wilson Trail Race Training Underway Run for Boxer’s Senate Seat The Mt. Wilson Trail to follow throughout the Starting on January 31, Beacon Media has learned that Rep. Adam Schiff is strongly considering a run for retiring Senator Barbara Boxer’s seat. In a statement provided by Patrick Boland, Schiff’s public information officer, Schiff says: “Since Senator Boxer announced her retirement, I have been encouraged by
many Californians to run for her seat in 2016. As the opportunity to run for a California senate seat comes around very seldom and I would relish the chance to serve the entire state, I am giving the matter serious consideration. “Last week, I was named to the top Democratic position on the intelligence committee, and I am deeply grateful for the confidence that my House colleagues have placed in me. The demands and responsibilities of this new position are considerable, and I hope to reach a decision in the near future after consulting with my family, friends and constituents.”
Race Committee is again offering a comprehensive 17-week program to get runners ready for the challenging Mt. Wilson Trail Race, scheduled for Saturday, May 23 in Sierra Madre. This program is free and the public is invited to participate. Run With Us/Pasadena, with assistance from Invictus Running Academy and the Foothill Flyers, will lead advanced and beginners groups on a series of weekly runs up the Mt. Wilson Trail or along City of Sierra Madre streets. The instructors will also offer an easy-to-follow training program for runners
