BY TERRY MILLER The drought is far from over despite the recent rains but there has been new growth in the San Gabriel Mountains which is cause for concern for the upcoming fire season in California. In preparation, the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains National Monument hosted a career fair recently in Arcadia designed to showcase and recruit for seasonal wildland firefighting positions recently. There are a variety of opportunities (both paid and unpaid) that may be available later this year, ranging from volunteer and student programs to seasonal and full time employment, for those seeking an exciting and fulfilling career path associated with the outdoors. BY NICK KIPLEY El Monte could use a boost; the city has been in debt since the recession, due in part to its dependence on an old financial model that worked in the past but now should be reconsidered. El Monte makes over half of its money in car dealerships. On top of that, retired city employees who are currently collecting benefits outnumber the amount of revenue brought in by dealerships. There is additional financial revenue generated by El Monte’s fleet of three helicopters which the city rents out to surrounding cities, but that is not enough to generate long-term revenue. After a series of layoffs which occurred in the height of the recession, the city has since gained some stability. But stabilSEE PG. 15
