Police Pursuit Leads to Collision, Injuries A man and a woman in a stolen vehicle from El Monte led Pasadena police Monday night on a ‘four minute, little over two mile vehicle chase’ on surface streets and on the freeway in Pasadena , which ended when the thieves – going in the wrong direction – crashed into another vehicle on a surface street. The driver of the stolen vehicle is still at Huntington Memorial Hospital,

where his condition was not immediately known. His passenger, an unidentified woman, was treated and released from the hospital, according to Pasadena Police. She was eventually arrested for grand theft auto and some stolen property that was inside the stolen Honda Accord, Alaniz said. The person in other vehicle struck by the sus-

pects’ vehicle was also injured. That person’s condition was not immediately known. About 8:30 p.m. Monday, an older model Honda Accord sped through a red light at Hudson Avenue and Colorado Boulevard which initiated the pursuit. At some point during the chase, the suspects Please see page 3

Settlement Ends Kaiser-RN Dispute With a settlement that is likely to elevate RN standards across the nation, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United announced a major tentative contract agreement for 18,000 California RNs who work at Kaiser Permanente hospitals and clinics that will give the RNs a stronger voice on patient care, and breakthrough improvements in workplace protections. The agreement also provides significant economic gains and additional retirement security. While the pact must still be ratified by the RNs, who will hold membership meetings beginning next Wednesday, CNA said it is cancelling a strike that had been scheduled for January 21 and 22. The agreement affects registered nurses and nurse practitioners who work in 86 Kaiser Permanente hospitals and clinics in Northern and Central California, from Santa Rosa to Fresno. CNA/NNU Executive Director RoseAnn DeMoro paid tribute to the “unity of the Kaiser RNs and their devotion to assuring the highest level of quality care for patients as well as protections for the nurses who deliver that care.” “We look forward to a new chapter in our interactions with Kaiser,” DeMoro added. “We especially appreciate the commitment of Kaiser’s leadership to addressing our concerns, including working through the complicated problems associated with the changes in health care delivery, some of them related to the Affordable Care Act, and the attention it has paid in this contract to the health and safety of its registered nurses as well as patients.” A key to the settlement was the agreement by Kai-

Theodicy Jazz Collective presents Jazz Vespers at St. Luke’s Monrovia Saturday, Jan. 31 Internationally acclaimed musical group Theodicy Jazz Collective will present a Jazz Vespers performance on Saturday evening, January 31, at 7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 122 South California Avenue at Foothill in Monrovia. Admission is free; there will be a freewill offering. Formed at Oberlin Conservatory in 2006 and developed during residency at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music from 2008-2012, the Collective has performed and created services for a multitude of churches and cathedrals up and down the East Coast, conducted workshops at universities from Yale to Oxford, and led con-

ferences from Los Angeles to London. TJC has performed for the National Council of Churches, Trinity Wall Street and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Its tour of England culminated in the world premier of the group’s own composition, The Canterbury Jazz Mass, with the choirs at Canterbury Cathedral. Musicians are pianist and leader Andrew Barnett; Will Cleary, saxophone; Sarah Politz, trombone; Nate Light, bass; Charlie Dye, drums; and Ann Phelps, vocals. Inspired by jazz, blues, gospel, traditional hymns, and world music, the group believes that music has the power to promote peace and

justice in society and that the jazz principles of community, flexibility, and listening can help the church thrive in our rapidly changing world. Far from abandoning tradition, it expands the poetry of the Church by combining jazz rhythms and harmonies with the rich liturgies found in the Book of Common Prayer, the oral tradition of spirituals, and established hymnody. Bringing voices from the margins of society into the center of tradition and liturgy, Theodicy’s work explores current theological questions with a commitment to musical and academic excellence, responsiveness to the Spirit, and love of tradition and the liturgical canon.

Mayeda Finds Herself as the Defendant in Another DACC Suit Marcia Mayeda, the head of Los Angeles County’s Department of Animal Control, is being sued along with the County of Los Angeles in a civil lawsuit charging her with complicity in the fatal mauling of jogger Pamela DeVitt. In Case Number BC 568584, Benjamin DeVitt vs. Los Angeles County Department of Animal Control and Marcia Mayeda personally, Mr. DeVitt, the widower of the victim, asks that Mayeda and Los Angeles County be found liable for causing his wife’s wrongful death and alleges fraud, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence. Pamela DeVitt was killed by a pack of unaltered, unlicensed dogs owned by Alex Jackson of Littlerock on May 9th 2013. Mr. Jackson was convicted of second degree murder in conjunction with the mauling and has recently been sentenced to fifteen years to life. In his opening arguments, the District Attorney prosecuting the case accused Los Angeles County Animal Control of “dropping the ball” on the case and upon further investigation it was discovered that this was an understatement. There had been multiple complaints against Jackson’s dogs for prior attacks – but Animal Control Officers did not act. On January 17, 2013 the dogs attacked two horseback riders and Animal Control was sent to investigate. An officer reported he saw the unaltered, unlicensed dogs at Jackson’s

address. He took statements from the victims but left the unaltered, unlicensed dogs at Jackson’s house, which was contrary to Department policy . On April 4, 2013 Mr. Jackson called the DACC and told them that the dogs in question were strays and not his, and again the DACC failed to impound the animals- thereby allowing the dogs to kill Ms. DeVitt. The suit further alleges that after Ms. DeVitt was killed, Marcia Mayeda and her department engaged in a coverup. It started with Mayeda’s testimony at the May 14th Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting when she testified that the DACC had received reports about the dogs but never had seen the dogs. To back up her mistruths, Mayeda is alleged to have instructed a DACC employee to go into the agency’s Chameleon tracking software and backdate notes covering up Mayeda’s and Animal Control’s culpability in the a matter. Ms. Mayeda and her employees were apparently unaware that the DACC’s computer’s timestamp every entry into Chameleon. In May of 2014, Mr. DeVitt learned that Mayeda had prior knowledge of these facts and further learned that Lancaster DACC employees were often under the influence of alcohol and ingesting illegal substances while on the job and driving the County vehicles under the influence, and failed to investigate, discipline, and/ or terminate the willfully negligent and reckless

County employees. Ms DeVitt’s death was entirely preventable. However because of her department’s lack of action, failure to follow proper department procedure, and Mayeda’s failure to enforce discipline, Ms DeVitt perished. The suit asks for an unspecified amount of damages from both Los Angeles County and Marcia Mayeda.

ping $6.4 million embezzlement scheme, were no longer employed by the city and are now officially “separated” according to William Boyer, Pasadena City’s Public Information Officer. Finance Director Andrew Green and Public Works Director Siobhan Foster are no longer employed by the city, Boyer said in a telephone interview Tuesday afternoon. The repercussions are enormous after the scandal broke earlier this month. And more information is coming to light with a strong connection to Riverside when both Siobhan Foster and Michael Beck were previously employed. The website: TMC: Thirty Miles of Corruption said on Tuesday “The question is were they qualified for the positions they hold, or was it just a political favor at the

expense of the taxpayer?” The site continues “Back in 2010 Foster was the brunt of a law suit filed against her by a whistle blower Sean Gill, City of Riverside Contracts Administrator, which included “bid rigging” and falsification of documents. Gill stated that “they made me do a lot of things that were unethical and illegal. Gill described the City of Riverside as a city tainted with corruption, but the City of Pasadena didn’t listen when he contacted them. Citizens of the City of Riverside are wondering who will be next? Tina English, Deanna Lorsen, Reiko Kerr, Brent Mason, Michael Beck?” Former DPW employee Danny Ray Wooten, 51, is accused of embezzling $6.4 million from a City Hall fund generated by a surtax on

residents’ electricity bills. The funds are supposed to be used for beautifying the city by undergrounding utility lines. Wooten allegedly funneled $3.5 million from the fund to Altadena-based contractor Tyrone Collins , and $2.8 million to two church organizations associated with Wooten. He is also accused of giving his former assistant, Melody Jenkins, more than $40,000 of the stolen money. Green and Foster were among city department heads that received pay raises from Beck in December. Wooten, Collins and Jenkins are scheduled Wednesday to appear in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Wooten is being held on $1.75 million bond. Collins is being held on $500,000 bond. Jenkins was released on bond last week.

“Operation Valentine” Leads to the Arrest of Nine Reckless Motorcyclists

Nine motorcyclists have been arrested and are facing felony criminal charges for their involvement in an incident that occurred on the Interstate 405 freeway in February 2014. The arrests were part of “Operation Valentine,” a multi-agency operation that included the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Los Angeles County Taskforce for Regional Auto theft Prevention (TRAP), the U. S. Marshals Service, and the Department of Insurance Fraud Division. “Operation Valentine” was organized following a lengthy CHP investigation into the February 15, 2014, incident in which a CHP officer observed a large group of motorcyclists on the I-405 freeway, near Sepulveda Pass, aggressively blocking all traffic lanes, performing stunts, and behaving in an overall reckless manner. The officer attempted to stop the lead rider, however, the motorcyclist failed

to yield to the patrol vehicle’s lights and siren, and a pursuit ensued. The patrol vehicle was then deliberately blocked by fellow motorcyclists as they dangerously veered into the officer’s path, in-

tentionally preventing the apprehension of the fleeing suspect. “This type of behavior is becoming a very disturbing and dangerous trend throughout our state. In this incident, hundreds of drivers were not only endangered, they were unnecessarily delayed from carrying on with their lives,” said

CHP Southern Division Chief Dan Bower. CHP investigators later identified nine suspects involved in the evading, threatening, and interfering with the officer. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed felony criminal charges on all nine suspects and issued arrest warrants. On January 15, 2015, arrest teams traveled as far as Bakersfield in their search, located all nine suspects, and booked them into various jail facilities in Los Angeles County. “The CHP is committed to ensuring that all motorists in California have the ability to travel freely on the state’s highways without fear, intimidation or delay. The conducted displayed by the individuals in this incident will not be tolerated, and future perpetrators will be similarly arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” added Chief Bower.

ser to establish a new committee of direct care RNs and NPs who will work with management to address the concerns RNs have about care standards in Kaiser facilities. “This is a great day for Kaiser patients and nurses,” said Zenei Cortez, RN, chair of the Kaiser RN bargaining team and a copresident of CNA. “We have an agreement that will strengthen the ability of Kaiser RNs to provide the optimal level of care our patients deserve, while establishing additional security for nurses. I am so proud of the Kaiser RNs and NPs who worked so hard for so long for this day.” “This agreement is a great achievement,” added Diane McClure, a Sacramento Kaiser RN and nurse negotiator. “We are especially excited about the expanded opportunity for new RN grads and trainees in Kaiser and the

protections this agreement offers for RNs and our families.” Among other major components of the agreement: • Kaiser will hire hundreds of RNs which the nurses say should substantially improve the quality of care for hospitalized patients, as well as signaling a renewed commitment to RN training and employment opportunities for new RN graduates at a time many hospitals have frozen RN hires. • Groundbreaking workplace protections for nurses from workplace violence to infectious diseases like Ebola to needle stick injuries. • Substantial economic gains for RNs and NPs, many of them the sole source of income for their families or extended families. Over the three years of the agreement, all the nurses will receive 14 percent pay increases through

across the board hikes and lump sum payments. • Additional long-term retirement security for Kaiser RNs and NPs through maintenance of a secure pension plan plus a substantial increase in employer contributions to the nurses’ 401k pension plans for the 87 percent of Kaiser RNs with those plans. • Annual paid release time, the first in the nation, for 25 RNs every year to participate in NNU’s disaster relief program, the Registered Nurse Response Network, which has dispatched hundreds of RNs to provide basic medical services following U.S. and global disasters from Hurricane Katrina to the Haiti earthquake to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. CNA also committed to helping National Union of Healthcare Workers at Kaiser, including mental health clinicians, to achieve a contract agreement as well.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest

bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property.
