have risen and nearly six miles of rail track have been laid on the 26-acre site. Slowly the Gold Line’s $265 million Construction and Maintenance Yard is coming to life.

El Monte Citizen Turns 100, Speaks About Lifelong Participation in Democratic Process BY NICK KIPLEY
Citizens who attended last week’s meeting of the El Monte City Council were treated to the (first in the city’s history) singing of “Happy Birthday to You,” led by the Mayor and members of City Council in celebration of Mr. Jaime Gonzales Monroe’s 100th birthday. Mr. Gonzales Monroy, who is an active member of the community and participant in the Senior Swim Program at the Jack Crippen Senior Center, was invited before the council along with his family to accept a plaque to commemorate his long life and particularly “senior” status in the community. After presenting Mr. Gonzales Monroy with the plaque on behalf of the City of El Monte, the mayor turned the microphone over to Mr. Gonzales Monroy, who gave an impassioned speech about his lifelong participation in the democratic process, and spoke of his gratefulness for the learning experiences SEE PG. 17
