Construction on New Mercedes Showroom in Arcadia Fully Underway

Pasadena Seeks Legal Action to Recover $6.4 Million in City’s Biggest Scandal

BY JOE TAGLIERI After a nearly 14-year effort, Arcadia’s only auto dealership and the city’s largest generator of sales tax revenue is in the final stage of its quest to construct a larger, more elaborate showroom. Rusnak Mercedes-Benz — in town since 2000 and currently located at 55 W. Huntington Drive near Santa Anita Race Track and the Civic Center — broke ground in December to begin construction of a 22,500-squarefoot, two-story structure just around the corner from its longstanding base of operations. The new location is destined for the 100 block of Santa Anita Avenue and will also include 78,000 square feet for vehicle service and repairs, storage and parking. In line with Mercedes’ arguable status as the flagship of luxury car brands, the plan for Rusnak’s new showroom is indeed nothing short of luxurious. The

palatial yet at the same time conservative design features panoramic glass walls with sleek light-blue columns and

white stone surfacing on the roof, creating a front facade reminiscent of somewhere between an ancient Roman

temple and ultra-modern sports arena. Inside, the forthcoming showroom will boast a mas-

sive sales floor to accommodate upwards of 30 brand

Mayor Bill Bogaard announced plans to file a civil lawsuit to recover funds lost in the $6.4 million embezzlement of the utility funds at this week’s City Council meeting. The announcement followed a closed-session prior to the regular council meeting Monday night. Bogaard also announced the formation of an ad hoc committee comprised of City Councilmembers who will probe the case as well as a citizens’ task force which

The Duarte Station is part of the Foothill Gold Line light rail project from Pasadena to Azusa. The station is located along Duarte Road, just west of Highland Avenue and within a short walk to the City of Hope National Medical Center (COH). With a center platform and tracks on both sides, access to the station will be available from the east and west sides of the platform. A new traffic signal has been installed at the entrance to COH and a new sidewalk on the north side of Duarte Road will be installed soon to allow easy walking to and from the station. A 125-space parking lot will be located north of the station. Bicycle parking and lockers are also planned. Andrea Myklebust and Stanton Gray Sears are two artists who began

working collaboratively in 1993, and have extensive experience in transit/infrastructure projects and site-responsive artwork. Based in Wisconsin, this artist team has an impressive array of public art projects around the country. Some of the highlights of their collaborative work include artwork for light-rail stations on the MinneapolisSt. Paul Central Corridor Line; architecturally-integrated artwork for the Microbial Sciences building at the University of Wisconsin at Madison; work on the Minnesota World War II Memorial; and design and creation of a granite entry paving for the historic Fox Theatre in Stockton, CA. letic ability, unflappable confidence and eccentric and flamboyant style of play. Grobbelaar was born in South Africa, but raised in neighboring Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe). He gained Liverpool’s attention during a loan spell at Crewe Alexandra during the 1979–80 season, and signed for the Merseyside club in 1981. Making 628 appearances for Liverpool over the next 13 years, including 440 in the League, he won the League championship with the club six times, as well as three FA Cups, three League Cups and the 1983–84European Cup. Grobbelaar left Liverpool for Southampton in 1994, transferred to Plymouth Argyle two years later, and thereafter played for an assortment of English lower-league teams, never for more than a few games. In the latter part of his club career Grobbalaar represented Zimbabwe notably under coach Reinhard Fabisch. He last played for Zimbabwe in 1998. Bruce Grobbelaar insists that Brendan Rodgers’ faith in goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, not the sale of Luis Suarez, is at the heart of Liverpool’s problems this season. The often outspoken and controversial Grobbelaa noted that Liverpool conceded 50 goals in the Barclays Premier League last season as they finished second, two points behind Manchester City who let in 13 goals fewer. Those defensive woes have continued this season with 18 goals already conceded by Mignolet in 12 games and Grobbelaar - one of the greatest goalkeepers ever to play for Liverpool - told BBC Sport that the Belgian is the problem. According to London’s Daily Mail “The Zimbabwean said: ‘Any team that lets in 50 goals should never be in second position in the first place. That was masked and brushed over by the brilliance of Suarez and [Daniel] Sturridge scoring so many goals.’ Grobbelaar added: ‘You’ve got to shore up at the back, get yourself some-

one in goal that can only let in 30 goals a season, or less than 30 goals a season.’ Asked if he thought Mignolet - who Rodgers signed from Sunderland two years ago - was the problem, Grobbelaar responded: ‘I’ve always said that. I’ve said that he doesn’t command his area.’

He went on: ‘I have likened him worse than Dracula, because at least Dracula comes out of his coffin now and then. He seems to stay on his line and that’s it. ‘That whole area - not the six-yard area, the 18yard area - is the goalkeeper’s, and in this day and age, in modern goalkeeping, if you come out and catch the ball and you get smacked you are going to get the foul.” ‘It’s not rocket science, and he is a big lad. As soon as that ball is in the air - get out, come for it. ‘You’re going to get a lot more fouls for you and less are going to go in the back of the net.’ In 13 years at Liverpool, Grobbelaar won six titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and one European Cup. Grobbelaar was vital to the triumphs of Liverpool’s greatest era, and was also present on its most tragic occasions: the night in the Heysel stadium when 40 Italian fans were crushed to death before the start of the 1985 European Cup final, just as the team were preparing to defend the title they had won for the fourth time the previous year; and the spring afternoon at Hillsborough in Sheffield four

years later when 94 of the Anfield club’s supporters suffered a similar fate before an FA Cup semi-final. According to London’s well-respected Guardian newspaper… “Barely a year after removing his kit from the Liverpool boot room for the last time, Grobbelaar became the central figure in a scandal concerning allegations of match fixing.” Soon there were “love rat” revelations in the former News of the World tabloid, made by a Zimbabwean barmaid and a “leggy Liverpool fan”, both of whom dressed up in replica goalkeeping kit for the photographs accompanying the story. But the match-rigging affair, involving Far East betting rings and Grobbelaar’s business partner, looked as though it might shake the game to its foundations. However, the colorful character Grobbelaar emerged won a long-running battle to clear his name over match-fixing allegations. But it was a hollow victory. The Sun ( owned by Rupert Murdoch) newspaper was ordered to pay him damages of £1 by the Law Lords, who condemned his conduct. One of them said the former Liverpool goalkeeper had ‘destroyed the value of his own reputation’. Grobbelaar, then 44, is left with legal costs estimated at more than £1million. The Lords overturned an Appeal Court decision to quash a libel verdict in his favor. They reinstated the earlier verdict of a High Court jury that the paper had libeled him in November 1994 when claiming he had taken ‘bungs’ for match fixing. However, they declined to reinstate his original £85,000 damages award. Their ruling said that while it had been proved that Grobbelaar had accepted bribes, it had not been shown that he had let in goals to fix results. It was for this reason that the original jury had found in his favor, according to London’s Daily Mail.

her family moved to Salt Lake City. She graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music, earned an MFA from the University of Utah, and taught English, creative writing, and humanities in high school for thirteen years before establishing a stained glass business. In the 1980’s, reading accounts of Vietnam vets dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, she realized she had long dealt with some of the same symptoms---unusual startle reactions to loud noises, unease with enclosed spaces and bright lights. She wondered if it had to do with her childhood imprisonment and began

painting watercolors to explore these emotions. As she began to display the watercolors in galleries and art shows, she was asked for descriptions of the paintings. These vignettes led to a creative memoir, Gasa Gasa Girl Goes to Camp: A Nisei Youth Behind a World War II Fence, published in June of 2014 by the University of Utah Press. Lavishly illustrated with her original watercolors and vintage photographs, the book offers a unique perspective of the Japanese American internment experience, familial relationships, and the interplay of art with remembered experience.

Major Crimes Bureau Investigating “Olive Garden” Restaurant Armed Robbery, South San Gabriel On Monday, January 12, 2015, at approximately 8:15 AM, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Temple City Sheriff’s Station responded to an “armed robbery” call at the “Olive Garden” restaurant located at The Shops at Montebello, unincorporated South San Gabriel. When deputies arrived, they learned that the suspect, a male adult, entered the “Olive Garden” restaurant before it opened for business. The suspect robbed the location as well as the five employees who were inside. The lone suspect held the employees at gunpoint and stole an unknown amount of cash from the restaurant receipts. Preliminary investigation also revealed that several of the employees were accosted by the suspect, however no injuries were reported. Although the “Olive

Garden” restaurant is in close proximity to California State Route 60, it is unknown at this time how the suspect escaped. LASD Major Crimes Bureau was requested to assist and is leading this investigation in conjunction with Temple Station investigators. Surveillance video from the restaurant and nearby Montebello mall is being reviewed by investigators. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau, Lieutenant Rodriguez, at (562) 946-7008or Temple Station at (626) 285-7171. new vehicles. Centrally placed interior columns will form an inner circle likely to showcase Rusnak’s top models. An upper level platform that wraps around a significant portion of the building’s perimeter will host a number of additional vehicles for customers to browse and offer a birds-eye view of autos on the ground level in addition to the neighboring cityscape and the San Gabriel Mountains off in the distance. HOK, a Culver City architectural firm, designed the project. San Marcos-based Kunzik & Sara Construction Inc. is the builder. Reportedly a $10 million development, Rusnak Auto Group CEO Victoria Rusnak put the total price tag for the project at more than $25 million. “The project is underway, and we’re thrilled about that,” Rusnak said in a phone interview. “We’re just coming off a fantastic 2014 operationally and ... are very focused on delivering the best facility and customer service to our loyal and newer clients.” The dealership’s annual sales total for 2014 was $170.5 million, up more than $18 million from 2013, according to CEO Rusnak. City Manager Dominic

Lazzaretto also shared his exuberance for the imminent dealership expansion. “The City is very excited that the Rusnak project is underway,” he said via email. “It is a significant investment by an elite retailer in a fantastic location. Once complete, the facility will provide an interesting and modern facade to the heart of our downtown.” Since 2001, company founder Paul Rusnak had sought to expand his business into a larger facility. At the end of the decade as the city and Rusnak neared an agreement to develop a 2-acre site assembled from several parcels on Santa Anita Avenue and adjacent side streets, the state government cancelled redevelopment funding. California law required the city to reorganize its real estate management agency, develop a long-range development plan and freeze all projects that didn’t have a finalized contract, which delayed the Rusnak project. “The Rusnak dealership is under corporate pressure to expand, and it is now our understanding that the franchise is at significant risk of being closed because it cannot meet expansion demands,” Arcadia Development Services Director Jason

Krukeberg wrote in a January 2013 letter to the California Department of Finance. “This would be a significant blow to Arcadia. Rusnak is a model corporate citizen, is invested in the community, and is a successful job producer and sales tax generator.” Rusnak Mercedes-Benz tops the list of businesses that contribute sales tax revenue to the city. According to a Development Services Department report prepared for the City Council in May 2013, the dealership must continue selling cars in Arcadia for 10 years and generate at least $800,000 in annual sales tax. “In the end this dealership will benefit the community tremendously,” Victoria Rusnak said. “It not only generates a gigantic amount of sales tax dollars, which of course funds the police, fire department and schools, it also brings incremental business to the community in terms of shopping, restaurants and all of that. When you’re selling and servicing that many cars, you have a lot of clients coming in.” Building permits were issued in December, and the development agreement requires that construction finish within 18 months from then.

Disney Opens Doors For Designers of Tomorrow Walt Disney Imagineering, the design and development arm of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, has selected the top six finalist teams of its 24th Imaginations competition. Imaginations is a design competition created and sponsored by Walt Disney Imagineering with the purpose of seeking out and nurturing the next generation of diverse Imagineers. Started in 1992, the program has grown to include a separate version sponsored by the Hong Kong Disneyland® Resort. This year’s six teams of finalists represent Art Center College of Design, Drexel University, Ringling College of Art + Design, San Jose State University, Texas Tech University, and University of Nevada, Reno. Each finalist team is awarded a five-day, allexpense-paid trip to Imagineering in Glendale, from January 26 to 30, where they will present their projects to Imagineering executives and take part in an awards ceremony on January 30. Finalists also have an opportunity to meet and network with Imagineers, go behind the scenes where Disney magic is created, and interview for paid internships during their visit. For this year’s Imaginations design competition, students from American universities and colleges were given the following challenge: Take what Disney does best today – from its worldclass theme parks, resorts, cruise ships, and other entertainment venues that are globally highly popular with families -- and apply it to transportation within a major city. The team’s Disney transportation experience should include station/stops and vehicle designs that reflect the diversity of the city, and are accessible, energyfriendly, and fun. A panel of Imagineering judges applies the

same criteria to the entries as they would to their own work that includes the team’s ability to collaborate across different disciplines and backgrounds; the mastery of their individual skills; whether the project provides an engaging Guest experience; a good understanding of the local and tourist market in the chosen location; the ability to tell a compelling and engaging story; and knowledge and passion for the Disney brand and Walt Disney Imagineering. Additionally, the project should be unique in that it is not limited to what Guests already experience at Disney parks and resorts. Imaginations is one of the creative ways that Imagineering uses to search for the next generation of talented theme park designers. The top three placed teams will be awarded cash prizes, with the first place team receiving $3,000. An additional $1,000 grant will be awarded to the first place team, to be equally divided among its sponsoring universities. The concepts presented by the finalists cover a wide range of concepts and topics including: a journey through Switzerland highlighting the intricacy and integrity of Swiss craftmanship, an interactive experience that unites Sydney with an unforgettable journey through the Dreamtime, an integral part of Australian mythology, a double rail train that tells the story of the city of New Orleans by creating a magical sightseeing experience, a steampunk travel experience focused on Toronto’s historical and social diversity, an immersive, role-playing experience through the city of Venice, and an entertainment underground transportation system set in the city of Chicago which enables guests to delve into unknown adventures.

The competition is open to students from colleges and universities in the United States who are juniors, seniors or full-time graduate students; or graduated no earlier than May of this year, and enrolled in courses in Architecture, Animation, Communications, Computer Science, Construction/ Project Management, Creative Writing/ Screenwriting/Playwriting, Design, Engineering, Fine Arts, Game Design and/ or Development, Graphic/ Communications Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, Interactive Media Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Media Production (Digital, TV, Film), Theater Design and Production, and Visual Arts. The Wunderkinds Art Center College of Design Katherine Park, Josephine Tsao, Waiji Choo, Susey Chang The beauty of Switzerland’s landscape, Zurich’s architecture, global recognition as a leader in energy efficiency and conservation, and a deep admiration for the intricacy and integrity of Swiss craftsmanship inspired this project. Highlighting Switzerland’s most famous products: chocolate, the Alps, and timepieces, the team found that these shared a sense of joy, adventure, and imagination, encompassed by the feeling of “wonder” as the true heart of mastery of these crafts. “Wonder” is the theme -- and thus the Wunderkinds were born. Guests for the ride range from young Wunderkinds, discovering the world around them, to the experienced Wunderkinds, who can rediscover their sense of wonder, as they journey around beautiful Zurich and learn about Switzerland’s various crafts. All Wunderkinds can engage in the fun and discovery that creating and tinkering entails, becoming skilled Disney Wunderkinds in the process.

will also consider if a review of the city’s 131 separate funds is needed in an effort to ensure no other city funds are being abused. City councilmembers Steve Madison, Victor Gordo, Margaret McAustin and John Kennedy will be on that committee. Members of the citizens’ task force, which will meet publicly, have yet to be appointed. Under state law, ad hoc committees are not typically subject to California open meeting laws. The Mayor’s plan to do this is designed to consolidate, “input and assistance from outside consultants and city staff in looking in to activities related to the embezzled funds as well as the extent to which the investigation leads to discovery of any problems with systems or payments beyond that particular fund.” “The council received legal advice from our attorneys and as a result of the discussion instructions were given to the city attorney to pursue and retain outside counsel and pursue prompt

Opinion The Pen IS Mightier than the Sword “La plume est plus forte que l’epee.” By Terry Miller While the global newsroom and its collective community, condemns the murders of the French journalists, editor and cartoonists of the popular satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo as well as the murder of two French policemen- newsmen and women worldwide vow to continue the ever-present struggle for a free press, proving that indeed the pen is mightier than the sword. Tribute cartoons to

the journalists at Charlie Hebdo compare pencils with guns, writers with fighters - it’s also why many demonstrators are holding pens and pencils in the air. Many of the cartoons assert that “the pen is mightier than the sword”. The English words “The pen is mightier than the sword” were first written by novelist and playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839, in his historical play Cardi-

nal Richelieu. Richelieu, chief minister to King Louis XIII, discovers a plot to kill him, but as a priest he is unable to take up arms against his enemy. Acts of violence directed at journalists are sadly not new but they appear more targeted now. Visual Artists Guild of New York said “The right of the freedom of speech and expression is the life blood not only of artists, it is the very foundation of a civil society. Indeed, the very survival of individuals depends on having the freedom of information and the freedom of the press. Visual Artists Guild stands in solidarity with the staffs of Charlie Hebdo, the people of France and all journalists around the world.”
