Rose Parade Float Sculptors Cast a Spell on Parade Watchers BY TERRY MILLER AND JENNIFER SCHLUETER Today, January 1, 2015 makes the 126th Rose Parade where floats of every shape, size, color and sponsorship vie for your attention as they go down Colorado Blvd. We’ve all seen them, every New Year Day since the 1800’s in Pasadena. Yes, those giant floats that seem to magically come alive at 8 AM and proceed almost seamlessly through the 5 ½ mile route. The process to make these floats is a little awe inspiring to some and downright impossible to imagine to others. It takes weeks, perhaps months of preparation before even the fabrication can begin. Enter Dennis Midyett float sculptor who has been doing this for over 40 years. Mr. Midyett has a passion for his craft of sculpting the steel, fabricating the design from conception to reality. The process takes months of meticulous and precise workmanship than few pa-

(see: http://www. pasadenaindependent. com/community/columns/ open-letter-to-president-and-

AHS Student Golfer Files Suit Against Arcadia Unified School District An AHS student golfer has filed suit against Arcadia Unified School District after a fall from a second story school balcony left her confined to a wheelchair. Michelle Cheung of Arcadia filed the negligence suit Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court. She seeks unspecified damages. According to the complaint, Cheung suffered two fractures to her right pelvis and broke several bones in her spine after falling from the second story balcony of the main building at Arcadia High School on Jan. 7, 2014. The complaint alleges the district did not maintain the
balcony railing in a safe condition, but does not elaborate further on how the student fell. Cheung was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena and underwent surgery two days after her fall, the suit states. Two metal rods and eight screws were inserted into her back, according to her complaint. She still does not have full mobility, requires the use of a wheelchair and it is uncertain whether she will fully recover or play golf again, the suit states. The AUSD superintendent’s office did not immediately return a call for comment.

Claremont is more than a sleepy college town with tree-lined streets, craftsmen homes, mountain views and a charming village. It is also an exciting and eclectic city with great restaurants, pubs, boutique shops, museums, an awesome botanical garden, hiking, biking and more. A friend and I snuck away to Claremont recently and had so much fun we are already planning a return. Our getaway began at the mission-styled DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Claremont, where we checked into a spacious suite overlooking the pool, Jacuzzi and the property’s lush interior. The room featured two queen beds, a 37-inch flat-screen TV, highspeed internet and a large office desk. Besides comfortable rooms, the boutique hotel also boasts a fitness center, a full service day spa, and a gourmet restaurant called The Orchard, which serves up California-Mediterranean fusion cuisine for lunch and dinner and a fabulous traditional buffet breakfast. The restaurant also has a full bar. Located on historic Route 66, at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, the hotel is a perfect home base for touring Claremont. It is steps from PianoPiano, a club with live dueling pianos shows, comedy, food and drink; and a few blocks from
The Village, where the heart of the city beats. To get to The Village we took the hotel’s free shuttle, which serendipitously dropped us off in front of Viva Madrid (www.vivamadrid.com), an authentic Spanish restaurant teeming with tasty tapas. Our meal began with Gamba al Ajillo, a favorite tapa in Spain, which features shrimp cooked with garlic, white wine, parsley, lemon juice, and extra virgin olive oil. Next we devoured Espárragos con Salmon, a delightful dish of asparagus wrapped with smoked salmon. Continuing down the extensive tapas list, we split a Spanish salad with carrots, beets, fennel, and cucumber in a pomegranate dressing. We then enjoyed various tapas with fried squid with aloli sauce; steamed clams in a spicy paprika sauce; and mussels with onions, garlic, tomato and garlic sauce. While eating we sipped Estrella de Galcia, a smooth, refreshing Spanish beer, and admired the restaurant’s Spanish-styled décor, with large, old wooden front door, wooden chairs, a faux balcony, and walls lined with a bull’s head, swords, sculptures, mirrors and paintings. After dinner we strolled through The Village and discovered the Hip Kitty Jazz and Fondue (www.hipkittyjazz.com), a swanky and in-
timate jazz supper club and lounge. Located in a renovated 1922 Packing House, the place sparkles with a warm, vintage style that harkens back to “an era when jazz was subversive and fondue was all the rage.” The next morning, we enjoyed a delicious buffet breakfast at the hotel and worked out at the fitness center. We then lounged by the pool until heading back to The Village for a visit to the Folk Music Center and Museum, where we played guitars and ukuleles and learned about the rich folk culture that has become a part of Claremont. We concluded our getaway at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (www. rsabg.org). Home to the 10th largest herbarium in the US, the gardens house more than a million plant specimens, almost half of which are California plants. Since it was summer, we got to see pink desert willows and yellow Palo Verdes mix with the tawny browns, soft grays and greens of the many grasses, shrubs, and trees. The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Claremont is located at 555 W. Foothill Blvd, Claremont, 91711. For more info, call 909-626-2411 or visit:www.doubletree3.hilton. com. From the sadness of losing a teammate after a terrible bus crash in Northern California to losing a firefighter, husband and dad in Arcadia – just two of the tragedies that made news last year. Despite the serious drought, we had a last ditch effort at some rain late in the year which caused a muddy mess in Monrovia. The 2015 Rose Queen was ecstatic at hearing the news of her selection; meanwhile CHP spend a considerable amount of time cleaning up after several 18-wheelers lost control on the 210 Freeway. Right: Pasadena Chief of Police Sanchez held a press conference in June dealing with a triple homicide. We also lost two great comedic giants in 2014 – first Jonathan Winters and then Robin Williams. Of course, the fires and drought continue to be major stories year round in California.

Hello Emmy. My husband and I are both retired. He's receiving Social Security. As a former teacher, my pension comes from CALPERS and I don't receive Social Security. Am I still eligible for spousal benefits from my husband's social security?

You are certainly eligible to apply. But I’m sorry to say, due to the Government Pension Offset (GPO) you may receive little to nothing in spousal benefits. In broad strokes, this is how it would work: You are eligible to receive 50% of your husband’s social
security income after he files for his benefits and you file for your spousal benefits. However, that Social Security spousal benefit will be reduced by two-thirds of your current CALPERS pension. For example: if your husband receives $2,000 in monthly social security payments, you would be eligible to receive half of that – or $1,000 before your pension’s offset. Let’s say your CALPERS pension is $1,500 per month. The GPO will be two thirds of that – namely $1,000. Subtracting the Government Pension Offset from your
spousal benefits in this hypothetical scenario nets you a big zero. In some cases, Social Security benefits as a spouse, widow or widower will not be reduced if you receive a government pension that is not based on your earnings or were a government employee who did pay Social Security taxes. You can call the Social Security office directly at 1-800-772-1213 to learn about specific rules. Though, be aware they will not help you apply those rules to your personal situation.
More information is available at socialsecurity. gov/pubs/10007.html. In order to accurately calculate your actual benefits, I must suggest a visit to a financial professional. Pasadena Community Coalition Angered
Embezzlement Scheme
Continued from page 1
Open Letter to “Tournament of Racism” “The Pasadena Community Coalition’s letter to the Executive Board of the Tournament of Roses, received in their offices on November 24, 2014, requesting that they address the lack of hiring of any African-American males on their staff has yet to be formally acknowledged or responded to by the Board. Copies of the letter were sent to the American Honda Co., ESPN, the NCAA, the Pac 12, and the Big 10, but these other groups also have not replied to us about the concerns listed in our correspondence. Three years ago, the lack of African-American males on the staff of the Tournament of Roses, better known as the “Tournament of Racism,” and the traditional non-hiring of them, was brought to the attention of the organization through a meeting arranged by Joe Brown of the NAACP. Attending that discussion were leading members of the Tournament, including for-
mer President Sally Bixby, and Tournament members Gerald Freeny and Otis Triplett, and Executive Director Bill Flynn. The Tournament promised to address this issue head on, yet here we are at the end of 2014 and they have not only reneged on their promise but have also refused to even respond to recent questions about the situation. For the Tournament of Roses to not honor its commitment going back 3 years is truly unacceptable and a sign of egregious indifference. Moreover, this same issue of the “Tournament of Racism” was raised over 20 years ago, presented to the organization’s executive director at the time, Jack French. He stated that African-Americans were not qualified to be on the Executive Committee. This provoked an outcry not only in Pasadena, but nationally and beyond, to the point that Nelson Mandela, Coretta Scott King and Jesse Jackson vowed to hold a counter-parade to the Rose Parade. At that moment,
the Tournament of Roses recognized their Executive Committee should be more diverse, and eventually moved to have women, Asians and Latinos on the Committee. In a recent article in one of the local Pasadena newspapers mentioning this ongoing issue, and according to the query of the reporter, the response of the Tournament of Roses to its lack of, in particular, AfricanAmerican male employees will be directed to Martin A. Gordon of the Pasadena Community Coalition. But more than 30 days have passed and the silence of the Tournament continues and is deafening. Ignoring this issue is hardly a credible response! We describe the current outcome in that way – and with great emphasis – because over 70 percent of the players of football teams under the auspices of the NCAA are African-American males. Furthermore the economic benefit they bring, which involves hundreds of millions of dollars
to each college campus and sports program, including that of the Pac 12 (UCLA and USC), and the Big 10, is tremendous. How can the Tournament of Roses, which also receives great value from these teams and their players, not be greatly concerned about the lack of any African American male on their staff? After all, so much of the worth and fame of the Tournament of Roses’ annual parade is dependent on the Rose Bowl game, which much of the public immediately identifies with the parade, and which, in turn, involves men of African descent. It’s long overdue that the “Tournament of Racism” and their “inspiring story” should be one about the Executive Committee announcing that Executive Director Bill Flynn is resigning from the Tournament for his lack of leadership and promotion of diversity. That way the “Tournament of Racism” can again be the Tournament of Roses.” -Martin A. Gordon, Chair Pasadena Community Coalition

Between 2004 and March 2014, Wooten is suspected of creating false invoices for the underground utility program and stealing more than $6 million. He allegedly directed more than $2 million of the stolen money to Collins, who owns Collins Electric.Wooten also allegedly gave Jenkins, who was a temporary Pasadena City employee, more than $40,000 in stolen city money. In addition, Wooten is suspected of setting up bank accounts in his name and directing city money to two churches he was affiliated with – the Southern California Evangelist Jurisdiction Center and the New Covenant Christian Fellowship Center in Pomona.

Prosecutors said the alleged theft was discovered earlier this year when the city ordered an audit. If convicted, Wooten faces up to 28 years in state prison. Collins faces up to 18 years in state prison. Jenkins faces up to four years in state prison. City officials provided information about an internal audit conducted into the embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds and and offered details on the City’s response and initiatives for greater oversight in the future.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. Compliance through great patient care
When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.
is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.
Our CPAP Circle of Care® program
was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.
Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance
Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).
Skeptical?
So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation.
