Rose Parade Float Sculptors Cast a Spell on Parade Watchers BY TERRY MILLER AND JENNIFER SCHLUETER Today, January 1, 2015 makes the 126th Rose Parade where floats of every shape, size, color and sponsorship vie for your attention as they go down Colorado Blvd. We’ve all seen them, every New Year Day since the 1800’s in Pasadena. Yes, those giant floats that seem to magically come alive at 8 AM and proceed almost seamlessly through the 5 ½ mile route. The process to make these floats is a little awe inspiring to some and downright impossible to imagine to others. It takes weeks, perhaps months of preparation before even the fabrication can begin. Enter Dennis Midyett float sculptor who has been doing this for over 40 years. Mr. Midyett has a passion for his craft

of sculpting the steel, fabricating the design from conception to reality. The process takes months of meticulous and precise workmanship than few parade go-

ers ever see. In fact, the art itself seems to be attracting less young sculptors which worries Mr. Midyett. “I hope it’s not a lost art…” he said. “The number of major spon-

sors has dropped and subsequently there are far less floats than ever. The cost, of course, is a major factor,” Mr, Midyett added. The art of float

Leondra Kruger Becomes Governor Brown Appoints California’s New Paid Sick Youngest Supreme Court Judge Leave Law Three to Los Angeles in 100 Years Widely Misunderstood, County Superior Court Spells Trouble for Small Businesses

California’s new paid sick law goes into effect January 1, but many small businesses don’t understand the law or its impact for their operations. Lonnie Giamela – a partner at national labor and employment firm Fisher & Phillips LLP – is counseling his clients to educate themselves and prepare. “Small businesses are going to be the most heavily impacted by this new statute, something most don’t even realize,” said Giamela. “There’s a real lack of clarity, so many small businesses are ignoring the new statute.

That’s a big mistake.” Giamela is seeing three primary misconceptions: 1. “I don’t need to comply until July 1, 2015.” There is no time to waste. California employers must post a new poster and distribute a new Wage Theft Protection Act Notice by January 1, 2015. Failure to do so may subject the employer to unnecessary penalties. 2. “Small businesses aren’t covered by the statute.” This is just wrong. Please see page 4

BY JENNIFER SCHLUETER Last Monday, Leondra Kruger was unanimously approved as the youngest justice of the California Supreme Court in almost a century. The 38-year old had been nominated by Governor Jerry Brown in November, and will be sworn into office by him on January 5, along with Mariano-Florentino Cuellar, who was confirmed as justice in August. Cuellar will replace retiring Justice Marvin Baxtor and Kruger will fill Justice Joyce Kennard’s seat, who had retired in April. Kruger was appointed by California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye; Attorney General Kamala Harris;

and Joan Dempsey Klein, “presiding justice of the second appellate district division three,” who rated her “‘exceptionally well-qualified,’ [which is] the highest ranking a judicial candidate can receive,” according to Courthouse News. Patch. com quoted former Assistant U.S. Solicitor General Benjamin Horwich, who had worked with Kruger: “She listens, she thinks, she listens, she thinks and then she listens some more.” Please see page 5

Loveable Weirdo: The Unique Tom Green Returns, January 23 The Ice House Comedy Club is thrilled to welcome the mischievous and always surprising stand-up of TOM GREEN on Friday, January 23. TOM GREEN sparked a TV revolution with his hit MTV comedy series The Tom Green Show. One of MTV’s toprated programs, it paved the way for shows like Jackass, Punk’d and Fear Factor. With its guerrilla video tactics and outrageous stunts, it was unlike anything that had been seen before. The Tom Green Show began on public access TV and was picked up by MTV. In a sense, it was the original independent, viral-video hit, years before YouTube even existed. The raw home-video look was what made the show relatable to young audiences across the globe, and its hilarious clips are still hugely popular online. After his show was acquired and broadcast by MTV, Tom went on to produce, direct and star in several films. He appeared in such blockbusters as Road Trip and Charlie’s

Angels, as well as the cult classics Freddy Got Fingered, Stealing Harvard, and Bob the Butler. He has appeared multiple times on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show,

Oprah, The Jimmy Kimmel Show, The View, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Live with Regis & Kelly, and The Wendy Williams Show. In fact, he is one of the few comedians in history given the chance to guest-host David Letterman’s program. He

has also hosted Saturday Night Live, and has appeared on numerous magazine covers including the coveted cover of Rolling Stone magazine. His autobiography “Hollywood Causes Cancer” is a criticallyacclaimed book detailing his battle with Testicular Cancer which he beat successfully at the peak of his MTV show’s meteoric rise. The Cancer Special, a full-length television special for MTV, documented Tom’s multiple surgeries and was called one of the Top Ten TV shows of the year by Time magazine. Tom’s independent online talk show Tom Green’s House Tonight was the first LIVE streaming talk show to become a massive success on the Internet. Audiences worldwide have enjoyed this ground-breaking series broadcast in real time from Tom’s home-made livingroom studio living room. It is the highest-rated online talk show in history and has attracted A-list celebrities and comedians to appear as Tom’s guests.

guide. Mr. Midyett pointed out that there was only information about the floral aspects and a lot of information about the TOR President and his family. Widely recognized as a leader in engineering throughout the industry, Fiesta Parade Floats is one of a small handful of professional float builders in the USA which consistently sets a new bar for what is possible with Rose Parade float technology. And Mr. Midyett is pleased to be affiliated with Fiesta’s computerized hydraulic animation, water irrigation, and special effects that “surpass the standard for engineering in the Rose Parade and throughout the float and prop-building industry,” according to their promotional piece. Fiesta Parade Floats delivers safe and dependable float construction, bringing designs to life in a way that will best support the engineering and floral technology. From

concept to structure, the construction process is guided by a team with decades of float building experience like Mr. Midyett. During our visit to Fiesta Floats in Irwindale 2 days before the big day, Beacon Media got a back stage pass to see the last minute touches that make these floats so magical each year. One of the floats Fiesta has been commissioned for is the AIDS Healthcare Foundation which this year honors the Ebola first responders: doctors, nurses and medical assistants who have worked and are working to contain Ebola. Once thoroughly decorated and inspected, the Fiesta Parade Floats crew embark on the “parade before the parade” when they drive the floats to the parade staging area in Pasadena where they are lined up to present for the public and media. Fiesta provides all of the necessary crew and

float supervisors to ensure a safe journey. Float sponsors are given trailers and parking directly on the crowded parade route and can participate in the parade as extensively as is desired. Fiesta also supports the famous “Post Parade”, when the floats are staged for public viewing and additional coverage. For more information see” www.pasadenaroseparade.com and also www.pasadenaindependent.com for a video of Mr. Midyett talking about his career as a float sculptor.

Paid Sick Leave Law Widely Misunderstood Continued from Page 1

Every California employer is covered by the new statute. Moreover, all employees, regardless if exempt or non-exempt, full-time or part-time are covered by the statute so long as they work 30 days and do not qualify for one of the limited exemptions. 3. “I already have a sick leave policy so I don’t need to worry about the statute.” Many small businesses already have a PTO or sick leave policy that provides for at least six days annually of PTO, but that is not enough. The law also requires that policies be modified to notify employees that they can take leave for a

number of situations. For example, most sick leave policies do not permit an employee to take leave for matters related to being a victim of domestic violence. The new paid sick leave does. Cantil-Sakauye, chair of the San Franciscobased court, “called Kruger’s credentials ‘truly stellar,’” according the website. Following an undergraduate degree from Harvard University and a law degree from Yale University, Kruger worked as an assistant law professor at the University of Chicago, and practiced privately. The website also reported that she then went to Washington, D.C., where she became “assistant to the U.S. solicitor general and acting principal deputy solicitor general,” and later deputy assistant attorney general in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel.

Continued from Page 1

Kruger was born and raised in Glendale; however, has never practiced law in California nor been a judge. Thus, Cantil-Sakauye questioned Kruger about these two lacking fields to which Kruger answered that her work with the Justice Department has exposed her to a variety of legal principles and that she hopes to continue learning and “draw on the expertise of her colleagues on the court,” as Patch notes. According to the LA Times, Kruger told California Attorney General Kamala Harris that she was excited “to have the opportunity to come back home” to

California. “It is where I was born and raised and where my family still lives,” she added. On the seven member court, Kruger will be one of three Democrats. Additionally, she will be the only African American member. Her colleague Cuellar, a law Professor at Stanford University, who also went to Harvard and Yale, will be the only Latino justice. He grew up in a border town in Mexico and, according to several sources, legally walked across the border every day to attend school on a scholarship in Texas. After his father was granted green cards, Cuellar became a citizen in 1994.

Santa Anita Winter Meet Opens to Big Crowd By Jacob Bigley Another lucrative opening day took place at Santa Anita Park as a rumored 40,000 spectators made their way to Arcadia to participate in the beginning of the 78th season of great horse racing. Nine races would take place during the picturesque, Friday afternoon as fans tried their luck in picking the winners. As Jay Cohen’s trumpet sounded the intro for each race, Trevor Denman’s famous “and away they go!” echoed throughout park. With each passing race, more and more tickets would be discarded in unfavorable finishes. The most favorable horse of the day was that of Shared Belief. A three year old horse, with veteran Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith aboard. He was running in the $301,000 Malibu stakes and went off at 1/2 odds. After an exciting race, Shared Belief was able to pull away with the victory holding off 70-1 contender, Conquest Two Step.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp.

Top Photo By: Terry Miller. Bottom Photo By: Jacob Bigley

This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

They will now proactively focus on crime trends and it will also decrease our response time to priority calls.” Technology and Support Division Director Dean Gialamas said, “Giving members of the communities we serve the ability to file certain categories of reports online enhances our commitment to outstanding public service. It provides residents a system that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, via computer or mobile device without waiting for a deputy to respond.”

Dec. 26 following a fight that occurred in a parking structure at Hollywood and Highland. Police shot Vargas after she brandished a firearm at officers. The complaint alleges Vargas has prior convictions for assault and robbery. If convicted, she faces more than 30 years in state prison. The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Tom Adams Vies for Monrovia Mayor’s Seat In an interesting turn of events for Monrovia, longtime councilmember Tom Adams, has thrown his hat into the ring hoping to oust Mayor Lutz with whom Adams has often vehemently disagreed. Adams sent out a letter Dec 30 stating: “Six years ago I decided to not run for Mayor as I felt that it would be bad for Monrovia to pit friends against friends and it would be best to see if we could “all get along”. Having lived here most of my life I can tell you that for most of my life Monrovia has been improving and has been the place that others wanted to be like. It saddens me to say that this is no longer the case and for the past six years I have seen Monrovia going backwards. During the past 3 Mayoral Terms we have had a rotation of seven different

sets of hands on the wheel that guides Monrovia. Many of these have been part time Managers and although I voted against any of the part time management arrangements I think we can all agree that Monrovia needs to be run on a full time basis, we all deserve better, our staff deserves better. As I drive around town Monrovia looks worse that it has in years, our parks, streets and other infrastructure are in dire condition and we must do something to reverse this. To that end, I am running for Mayor in the election that will take place in April. I will not make anyone uncomfortable in asking for their support as I recognize that many of us have mutual friends. I do this for Monrovia because I do believe that Monrovia must come first.” – Tom Adams
