Los Angeles Blaze Calls Building Codes into Question The fire that ruined buildings and snarled traffic in downtown Los Angeles last week may not have happened ten years ago. However, loosening of the building codes and the increasing importance on low-cost construction is putting Los Angeles and other areas at risk. “Taller and larger wood buildings are part of trend to relax fire protection provisions in building design and construction to reduce costs,” says Stephen S. Szoke, PCA senior director of codes and standards. “It saves on initial costs by using cheaper building construction than traditional non-combustible materials such as concrete, masonry or steel and puts buildings under construction at a greater risk of fire.” The model building code used as the basis for most city and state building codes is the International Code Council International Building Code (IBC). The 2012 edition of the IBC, limits the height of load-bearing combustible construction to four stories for residential construction. A building using loadbearing walls of combustible wood construction can have a total height of five stories if the building has sprinklers and at least the first floor is constructed of fire resistance rated noncombustible construction, such as concrete or masonry. But, a sprinkler requirement cannot protect the building and structures around if a fire breaks out during construction. Structures built with non-combustible materials prevent the spread of fire, even when a sprinkler system fails - as can Please see page 3

Trainspotting in Arcadia – First Tests of Light Rail between Pasadena and Azusa Start
BY TERRY MILLER On Monday morning, Metro conducted the first of many clearance tests involving an actual Metro Gold Line train from Sierra Madre Villa to Azusa. The light rail project recently held a track completion
ceremony in Azusa and this, now, is the next necessary step to propel the Gold Line towards Azusa next year. Scores of people assembled at the corner of First and Santa Clara starting around 9AM to witness
a historic moment in Arcadia’s history, the first time a train has been seen in Arcadia for decades. Due to several delays, the train didn’t actually arrive until around 1:30PM. Metro crews carefully inched the
vehicle from Sierra Madre Villa to check for clearance at various spots using Styrofoam connected with duct tape to assess the clearance, particularly at Please see page 5

The holidays are here and that means it’s time for family, shopping, extra eating, and if you are like me, looking for fun light displays. And when it comes to the latter, I have a wonderful new place to add to my list. It is called IlluminOcean and it is located along the water-front boardwalk in Dana Point Harbor, about 50 miles south of Los Angeles. Highlighted by a brilliant spectacle of 22 oversized lighting sculptures with more than 500,000 LED lights, and 23 miles of glowing light strands, IlluminOcean is Dana Point’s version of Rockefeller Center in New York or Millennium Park in Chicago. From octopus and sharks, to starfish and surfers, the dazzling light displays are highlighted by a towering, 50-ft-tall glow-motion tree, standing next to a giant lighted pirate ship. Other must-see shimmering sculptures at light festival include 40-foot Blue whale that visitors can walk into, a Lightwave tunnel that is longer than a football field, a huge curvy sea monster, Santa fishing for sharks, and much more. During my visit to IlluminOcean a friend and I enjoyed a great dinner at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Doheny Beach, which is located on Pacific Coast Hwy, about a half-mile from the IlluminOcean event. While
enjoying fresh calamari and New York steak at the hotel’s Vivo Bar, we sat on the rooftop terrace and watched the sun fall into the Pacific Ocean. After dinner, the hotel provided a free shuttle to and from the IlluminOcean event. The free nightly IlluminOcean event, which is in its first season, is sponsored by The Resorts of Dana Point and runs through January 4, 2015. For more information on the event, visit: www. illuminocean.com. For more information on visiting and staying in Dana Point, visit:www.mydanapoint.com Another fun holidayinspired light show can be found along a treecovered section of Santa Rosa Street in Altadena. Known as “Christmas Tree Lane,” this California state historical site has more than 100 years of Christmas lighting history, as each year volunteers decorate it with more than 10,000 thousand twinkling lights. The event is held nightly and is said to be the “oldest large-scale Christmas lighting spectacle in the United States.” Christmas Tree Lane is located on Santa Rosa Avenue, between Woodbury Ave and Altadena Dr in Altadena. For more info visit: www.christmastreelane.net. Just down the street from Christmas Tree Lane is the Balian Man-
sion in Altadena, which puts on one of best light shows you’ll ever see at a private residence. Each year since 1955, the owners have decorated their estate with thousands of lights and Christmas figures and ornaments. Decorations includes giantsized images of Santa and his reindeer; Frosty the Snow man; a large nativity scene; and much more. To get to the house, exit Allen Ave. north off the 210 Freeway and turn right on Mendocino Lane. If it’s nighttime, you can’t miss the magnificent glowing mansion. And then there is STATS in Pasadena, which is more of a store than a light show, but is worth a visit if you love holiday decorations. Located in an historic red brick building in Old Town Pasadena, this timeless arts and crafts outlet is transformed each holiday season into a magical wonderland of Christmas trees, snow angles, elves, and thousands of lights, trees, wreaths, garlands, decorations, ornaments, wrapping paper, ribbons, candles, and even a section of old toy trains and miniatures. The place has everything anyone could want to display for the holidays. I’m not a big decoration shopper, but this store is really a mustsee Christmas extravaganza. STATS is located at 150 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena. For more info, visit: www.statsfloral.com.

Barbies at school every day at recess. Because she doesn’t have a real Barbie, her teacher lets her borrow a stuffed bird, and Alexandra pretends the bird is a Barbie. The Galvan family is one of many throughout Los Angeles County struggling every day to make ends meet. The holidays, far from being joyful, are a depressing reminder that they have no money for presents or for a holiday dinner. Hillsides is hoping to bring holiday cheer to the Galvan family and other families in need through its annual Adopt-A-Family program. The agency has set a goal of providing 80 families with gifts and food for the holiday season, and is reaching out to the community to fulfill this goal. “Without this program, families will not be able to celebrate Christmas or have enough food to feed their family when the children are home from school

during the holidays,” said Laura Kelso, Hillsides director of community resources. “These donations will restore some sense of happiness in the families’ lives, bringing them comfort and joy and, in the case of the Galvan family, hopefully a Barbie.” Community members can choose the size of the family they wish to adopt, ranging from small (one – three people), medium (three – five people), or large (five plus individuals). The cost of adopting each family member is approximately $100. The deadline for adopting and shopping for a family is December 15. To adopt a family, please contact either Kelso at lkelso@hillsides.org or 323-254-2274, ext. 1251 or Community Resources Assistant Stephanie Lopez at slopez@hillsides.org or 323254-2274, ext. 1258. Donors will receive a family profile, with specific needs and wishes of each family mem-
ber, and instructions on shopping and dropping off the items. For more information on adopting a family or for those who would like to support a family but don’t have time to shop, please visit http://www. hillsides.org/content/adoptfamily-holidays. For those unable to commit to adopting a family, Hillsides is also asking for gift cards in increments of $25 to stores such as Food 4 Less, Ralphs, Smart & Final, Walmart, and Vons. Those interested in purchasing gift cards can also contact Kelso or Lopez. happen in an earthquake or when a building is still under construction and the sprinkler system has not yet been installed. In 2007 when construction was at an all-time high, the most common form of five- and six-story residential construction used load-bearing concrete masonry walls with precast concrete floors. “Common sense shows that buildings build of non-combustible materials are not at the same risk of fire damage,” says Szoke. “According to a recent National Fire Protection Association report, during a five-year span, departments responded to nearly 830 construction fires. Aftermath pictures
routinely show that it is only the wood portion that burned away. Concrete staircases and elevator shafts are still intact. The Los Angeles fire only caused structural damage. If codes are not changed, the next one could cause loss of life.” About PCA: Based in Washington, D.C., with offices in Skokie, Illinois, the Portland Cement Association represents cement companies in the United States. Daniel Camerano pleaded no contest to three felony counts, including using a minor for sex acts, oral copulation of a person under 16 and contact with minor for sexual offense. Deputy District Attorney Renee Chang with the Justice System Integrity Division is prosecuting the case. Camerano, who was an advisor to the department’s Explorer Program, began a sexual relationship with the
14-year-old girl between May 2009 and December 2010. The eight-year veteran also admitted sending sexually suggestive text messages to 17-year-old female Explorer in November 2012. Camerano resigned from the Irwindale Police Department in June. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Georgina Rizk ordered him to return to court on Jan. 20, 2015, for sentencing in case BA425965. Under terms of the plea settlement, Camerano will be sentenced to two years, eight months in state prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Trainspotting in Arcadia – First Tests of Light Rail between Pasadena and Azusa start Continued from page 1
Testing will be conducted in Arcadia, Monrovia and Duarte. Intersection crossings that will be impacted temporarily during the initial clearance tests include: First Ave/Santa Clara St (Arcadia), Mayflower Ave (Monrovia), Magnolia Ave (Monrovia),Myrtle Ave (Monrovia), and California Ave (Monrovia). Intersection crossings that will be impacted more extensively duringthe testing period include: Mountain Ave (Monrovia/Duarte), Buena Vista St (Duarte), and Highland Ave station platforms. According to Doug Tesselor, Metro Chairman, the next 10 months will be devoted to testing the trains, next time under their own power. Monday’s test was unpowered and required the use of a semi-truck to pull the Gold Line train through Arcadia, Monrovia and into Azusa. The long and lengthy process is highly technical and requires a very large crew of men and women to assure that all stages of the rail line are secure, free of obstacles and most of all safe.
During this two week period in December, the Foothill Gold Line will complete the initial train testing for the light rail project from Pasadena to Azusa. During this period, a single train will be first pulled and then operated on its’ own power within the rail corridor between the cities of Arcadia and Duarte. This initial testing activity will test train clearances along the alignment as well as the Overhead Catenary System which powers the trains. The Foothill Gold Line is on schedule for construc-

Why Classic?
We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.
“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.
able to continue to collect usage data.
Compliance through great patient care
When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.
is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.
Our CPAP Circle of Care® program
was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.
Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance
Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Our proprietary systems automate the flow of documentation keeping referring doctors completely informed about their patients’ progress and ensure physicians have the documentation they need for follow-up consultations with their patients.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site - www.servicelinkASAP.com - for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case: 117822.
