Trainspotting in Arcadia – First Tests of Light Rail Between Pasadena and Azusa Start BY TERRY MILLER On Monday morning, Metro conducted the first of many clearance tests involving an actual Metro Gold Line train from Sierra Madre Villa to Azusa. The light rail project recently held a track completion ceremony in Azusa and this, now, is the next necessary step to propel the Gold Line towards Azusa next year.

Scores of people assembled at the corner of First and Santa Clara starting around 9AM to witness a historic moment in Arcadia’s history, the first time a train has been seen in Arcadia for decades. Due to several delays, the train didn’t actually arrive until around 1:30PM. Metro crews carefully inched the vehicle from Si-

erra Madre Villa to check for clearance at various spots using Styrofoam connected with duct tape to assess the clearance, particularly at station platforms. According to Doug Tesselor, Metro Chairman, the next 10 months will be devoted to testing the trains, next time under their own power. Monday’s test was unpowered and required the use of a semi-truck to pull the Gold Line train through Arcadia, Monrovia and into Azusa. The long and lengthy process is highly technical and requires a very large crew of men and women to assure that all stages of the rail line are secure, free of obstacles and most of all safe. Female Inmates Housed at Twin Towers Sew Blankets for 999 for Kids Program The holiday season is traditionally thought of as a time of charity and goodwill. With so many families and children in need, it’s challenging at times to find an adequate number of volunteering hands. That is, unless you take a peek into the blanket workshop at the Los Angeles County

Sheriff’s Department Twin Towers Correctional Facility (TTCF). The female inmates housed at TTCF have been quite busy preparing for the 2014 Season. The Blanket Project came about in 2010 by Inmate Services Bureau Inmate Programs staff, in an effort to continue pro-

viding holiday gifts to children in need. Personnel realized children’s blankets would be an ideal gift; they can be fun and warm for kids to snuggle, as well as provide feelings of security and hope. At a time when inmates are likely missing Please see page 4

The Youth Policy Institute in Los Angeles was one of the select-

ed communities that will receive technical funding to create a communitysupported agriculture program that can improve the health of low-income residents by increasing access to local foods, boost economic opportunities for farmers and producers in the region, and help revitalize distressed neighborhoods. Over the next two

years, the project will aim to increase access to locally grown, healthy fruits and vegetables for residents while boosting economic opportunity for farmers/producers in various neighborhoods in central Los Angeles such as Boyle Heights, Central City, El Sereno, Downtown LA and Monterey Hills. their own children and families the most, they are able to give back by volunteering to create these beautiful, multicolored blankets for both young boys and girls. Twin Towers Correctional Facility Captain John Benedict is honored this holiday season to help provide local communities -especially the childrenwith the fun-filled gifts, smiles and encouragement only a handmade item can express. Captain Benedict voiced his appreciation for the program, noting its positive impact on those incarcerated and their ability to give back. Assistant Division Director Karen S. Dalton has been a strong supporter

and influential presence within the Blanket Project since the very beginning, and feels strongly about the selfless work being done. “Soft, fuzzy, warm blankets are handmade through a collaboration between Inmate Services Bureau personnel and female inmates. Working together, hundreds of blankets are made and given to children under the care of the County’s Department of Children and Family Services at the Sheriff’s annual 999 for Kids Holiday Celebration. I always have a lump in my throat when I see a child’s eyes light up when he tells me his favorite superhero is Superman or a little girl tells me her favorite princess is Belle and

we have character blankets for them. When their eyes light up and the smile of their faces become larger than life over a blanket, it reminds me how grateful I am for what I have, and to NEVER take simple things, like a blanket, for granted.” The purchase of the blanket material was made possible through the Inmate Welfare Commission. No sewing or special skill is required, just a little patience and a lot of heart. For questions or information about the Blanket Project, please contact Custody Assistant Cynthia Murphy, Inmate Services Bureau Education Based Incarceration, at 213-4732999.

project also aims to revitalize sites in these neighborhoods by building stronger connections and accessibility through affordable access via biking, walking, or public transit. Local Foods, Local Places is a partnership among USDA, EPA, Department of Transportation (DOT), ARC, the Delta Regional Authority (DRA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The initiative draws on the Administration’s Partnership for Sustainable Communities, USDA’s Seven Strategies for Economic Development and other place-based strategies to address regional challenges. Under this effort, a team of agricultural, transportation, environmental, public

health and regional economic experts will work directly with the communities to develop local food projects they proposed. The 26 “Local Foods, Local Places” communities were chosen from among 316 applicants. The initiative is jointly funded and will provide $800,000 in technical assistance to communities. A complete list of communities participating in the Local Food, Local Places Initiative can be found on the White House Rural Council website: http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/ docs/lflp_community_list.pdf About the White House Rural Council: To address challenges in Rural America, build on the Administration’s rural economic strategy, and im-

prove the implementation of that strategy, the President signed an Executive Order establishing the White House Rural Council. The Council coordinates the Administration’s efforts in rural America by streamlining and improving the effectiveness of federal programs serving rural America; engage stakeholders, including farmers, ranchers, and local citizens, on issues and solutions in rural communities; and promoting and coordinating private-sector partnerships. The work of the White House Rural Council and USDA to bring investment to rural America is an example of how the Administration is creating smart partnerships with the private sector to better support Americans in all parts of the country.

These representatives of the most advanced and respected air, space and cyberspace force will be on the ramp to sign autographs throughout each day of the Air Show weekend. “We are excited to be hosting the USAF Thunderbirds,” said Mike Belzil, president of the Los Angeles County Air Show. “America’s Ambassadors in Blue bring more than thrills and entertainment; they highlight our nation’s innovation and ingenuity while showcasing true gratitude for all military personnel both past and present. Don’t miss a chance to see them perform and the opportunity to meet them in person.” On the ground, spectators will be able to explore static aircraft displays, interact with pilots and crewmembers, and experience interactive attractions and educational exhibits designed to promote science, technology, engineering and math. Last May, the Galvan* family lost its apartment and was homeless for months. Mom Mary, a single mother, works at a minimum wage job to support her three daughters, ages 6, 10, and 12. The family never has enough for basics, such as sturdy shoes for the long 2.5 mile walk home from school each day. The youngest daughter, Alexandra, suffers from anxiety, and finds comfort playing “pretend” Barbies at school every day at recess. Because she doesn’t have a real Barbie, her teacher lets her borrow a stuffed bird, and Alexandra pretends the bird is a Barbie. The Galvan family is one of many throughout Los Angeles County struggling every day to make ends meet. The holidays, far from being joyful, are a depressing reminder that they have no money for presents or for a holiday dinner. Hillsides is hoping to bring holiday cheer to the Galvan family and other families in need through its annual Adopt-A-Family program. The agency has set a goal of providing 80 families

with gifts and food for the holiday season, and is reaching out to the community to fulfill this goal. “Without this program, families will not be able to celebrate Christmas or have enough food to feed their family when the children are home from school during the holidays,” said Laura Kelso, Hillsides director of community resources. “These donations will restore some sense of happiness in the families’ lives, bringing them comfort and joy and, in the case of the Galvan family, hopefully a Barbie.” Community members can choose the size of the family they wish to adopt, ranging from small (one – three people), medium (three – five people), or large (five plus individuals). The cost of adopting each family member is approximately $100. The deadline for adopting and shopping for a family is December 15. To adopt a family, please contact either Kelso at lkelso@hillsides.org or 323254-2274, ext. 1251 or Community Resources Assistant Stephanie Lopez at slopez@

hillsides.org or 323-254-2274, ext. 1258. Donors will receive a family profile, with specific needs and wishes of each family member, and instructions on shopping and dropping off the items. For more information on adopting a family or for those who would like to support a family but don’t have time to shop, please visit http://www. hillsides.org/content/adoptfamily-holidays. For those unable to commit to adopting a family, Hillsides is also asking for gift cards in increments of $25 to stores such as Food 4 Less, Ralphs, Smart & Final, Walmart, and Vons. Those interested in purchasing gift cards can also contact Kelso or Lopez. Hillsides, headquartered in Pasadena, is a premier provider dedicated to improving the overall well-being and functioning of children, youth, and families in need. For more information on Hillsides, please visit www. hillsides.org. *Names and some details have been changed to protect the privacy of the family.

Ex-YMCA Employee Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Child Molestation Continued from Page 1

prosecuted the case, said Pooley sexually abused two girls in separate counties. Earlier this year, a 4-year-old girl revealed that she had been sexually assaulted in July by the defendant while she was at a YMCA in Torrance, the

prosecutor said. Authorities were alerted about the victim’s claim and immediately began an investigation. Detectives learned that the defendant’s female family member reported that he also sexually molested her in 2002 at a Kern

County home when she was 7 years old. Pooley was apprehended on July 30 and charged the next day. He has remained in custody on $200,000 bail. The case was investigated by the Torrance Police Department.

Former Sheriff’s Deputy Sentenced to Three Years in Prison for Molesting Teenage Girl A former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced today to three years in state prison for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. John Augustus Rose II, 44, also must be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life as

part of his sentence. In October, Rose pleaded no contest to one count each of lewd act on a child and possession of matter depicting minor engaging in sexual conduct. Deputy District Attorney Rosa Alarcon with the Justice System Integrity Division said Rose began a sexual relationship with a 15-year-

old girl beginning in March 2013 and continuing through June 2013. He met her through her family. Rose was with the Sheriff’s Department for 22 years. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.
