ACLU Pipes in on Ferguson Grand Jury Decision The grand jury in Ferguson, Mo., has declined to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson on charges in the Aug. 9 shooting death of Michael Brown. The following is reaction from Jeffrey Mittman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri: The grand jury’s decision does not negate the fact that Michael Brown’s tragic death is part of an alarming national trend of officers using excessive force against people of color, often during routine encounters. Yet in most cases, the officers and police departments are not held accountable. While many officers carry out their jobs with respect for the communities they serve, we must confront the profound disconnect and disrespect that many communities of color experience with their local law enforcement. Desert Hot Springs is yet another oasis in the Palm Springs area. Set atop ancient hot and cold aquifers, the town is known for its abundant resorts and mineral spas, its world-class drinking water, secret celebrity visitors, and as I recently discovered, a few other hidden gems. One of the most fascinating jewels I found was Cabot’s Pueblo Museum, a 75-yr-old, hand-built, desert hideaway with 35 rooms,150 windows and 65 doors. Nestled in the scenic hills of Desert Hot Springs, the design of the pueblo was inspired by the Hopi Indians and looks like an old-west movie set. The builder behind the rustic mansion is Cabot Yerxa, a renaissance man, “who followed his heart, traveled the world and accomplished countless things.” And one of his biggest legacy’s is this home, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Cabot began building his masterpiece in 1941 at the tender at 57. While taking a guided tour of the property recently, I learned all about the man and how he helped found what is today Desert Hot Springs. It all started in 1913, when at the age 30, Cabot homesteaded about 160 acres in what is now Desert Hot Springs. At the
time, the area was a dry, unforgiving land, where few English-speaking people lived. According to articles Cabot wrote for a local paper at the time, he would walk 14 miles to get water from a trickling clay bank at a place called Two Bunch. In between doing this, he would search the desert for any other sources of water, but would only encounter snakes and rabbits. At one hillside location he found remnants of Native American Indians and decided that if they could survive there, so could he, and it was here that he set up his camp. It was also here that thanks to an Indian friend, he dug a well and discovered hot mineral waters deep below his property, coming from the now famous Desert Hot Springs. And when he dug a second well nearby, he found cold water coming from the Mission Springs Aquifer. Because of these discoveries, he named his land “Miracle Hill.” With water available, Cabot began to build his dream house - a 5,000-sqft residence, inspired by a replica of a Southwest Indian pueblo he saw as a boy at the Chicago World’s Fair. The structure is made of anything he could find laying around the desert, including abandoned cabin pieces, used tires, tin cans, old telephone poles, buck
board wagon, and more. Much of the four-story Pueblo is made from adobe-style and sun-dried brick that Cabot made himself in his courtyard. He used a cup of cement rather than straw to make the bricks. He worked on the pueblo until his death in 1965 at the age of 81. Today, the pueblo is still in great shape and most of the furnishings and artwork are still in place, including Cabot family artifacts collected from their adventures dating back more than 100 years. During my tour, the guide told of Cabot’s journeys to Dakota Territory, Mexico, Cuba, Alaska, France and throughout California and the Southwest, before he helped to create the town of Desert Hot Springs. Besides an accomplished architect and writer, he was also an painter, a human rights activist for Native Americans, and was the first Post Master of the town of Sierra Madre. Cabot’s Pueblo also boasts a 43-ft-tall “Waokiye,” or Native American wooden sculpture by artist Peter Wolf Toth, that he carved from a giant sequoia. The stature was brought to the site in 1978. pitched two scoreless innings to earn his fourth save, striking out four. Devon Eskridge had three hits and two RBIs, and Guy Gruppie, Jr. two hits and two RBIs to lead the AALL offense. Chris Yonemoto’s circus catch of a line drive to left in the final inning brought the AALL crowd to its feet. To get to the final, AALL fought off a strong Sierra Madre Reds team Saturday, 2-1, in a wellplayed game that AALL Navy’s pitching dominated. Joe Chung helped his own pitching cause with a tworun home run, Eskridge got a save and Michael Gruppie turned in a sensational starting effort by striking out all six Reds’ batters that he faced. In the second round, AALL edged rival Santa Anita, 5-3. Devon Eskridge had the game-winning hit as Julian Eskridge saved Chung’s pitching win. Michael Gruppie turned in another strong starting effort, allowing no runs and no hits,
but it was his play from short in the Santa Anita fourth that cut down what would have been the go-ahead run and stopped AALL’s momentum. In its tournament opener, AALL avenged its only fall loss by routing Temple City Green, 15-1. Michael Gruppie earned the pitching victory and knocked three runs, Julian Eskridge had four RBIs, and Devon Eskridge had three hits. Chung led all Fall players with seven total homers, Julian Eskridge drove in 19 runs, Devon Eskridge had 27 hits and played a strong second base, and Michael Gruppie surrendered only three hits and one run in 15 innings on the mound, striking out 35 batters. The Fall tournament win capped perhaps the best season in AALL history. The league won two District 17 All-Star championships in July, came within a run of another and then AALL Navy went 11-1 in the fall.
Burbank Man Charged With Attempted Murder in Glendale Home Driveway A 40-year-old man was charged today with trying to kill a Glendale resident in his driveway, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Deputy-in-Charge Susan Steinfeld said Artyom Martirosyan (dob 2/3/74) of Burbank is facing one felony count each of attempted murder, assault with a firearm and criminal threats in case GA095248. Martirosyan pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to return on Dec. 8 in Department 1 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Burbank
Branch. About noon on Nov. 19, Martirosyan approached the victim, a one-time potential business partner, and shot him several times, the prosecutor said. Before leaving, the defendant threatened to kill another victim who witnessed the shooting, the prosecutor added. Martirosyan is being held without bail. If convicted as charged, he faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison. The case remains under investigation by the Glendale Police Department

ACLU Pipes in on Ferguson Grand Jury Decision Continued from page
The ACLU will continue to fight for racial justice. We must end the prevailing policing paradigm where police departments are more like occupying forces, imposing their will to control communities. This ‘us vs. them’ policing antago-
nizes communities by casting a blanket of suspicion over entire neighborhoods, often under the guise of preventing crime. To build trust, we need a democratic system of policing where our communities have
an equal say in the way their neighborhoods are policed. Collaboration, transparency, and communication between police and communities around the shared goals of equality, fairness, and public safety is the path forward.

NASA Seeks Comments on Possible Airship Challenge Airships aren’t just powered balloon-like vehicles that hover above sporting events. Researchers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, are floating the idea that airships have potential for important scientific and commercial uses. NASA is considering issuing a challenge for developing stratospheric airships that can break records in terms of duration of flight at high altitudes. The agency has issued a request for information for this contemplated “2020-20 Airship Challenge.” Submissions will be accepted until December 1. “We are seeking to take astronomy and Earth science to new heights by enabling a long-duration, suborbital platform for these kinds of research,” said Jason Rhodes, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who is leading the effort on the possible challenge. A blimp is one example of an airship; a zeppelin, which has a rigid body, is another. By definition, an airship must be powered, navigable, and lighter than air. The idea behind the 20-20-20 Airship Challenge would be to achieve unprecedented airship milestones. The first “tier” of competition would be to get an airship with a 44-pound (20 kilogram) payload to stay at an altitude of 65,000 feet (20 kilometers) for 20 hours. More ambitious ship-builders can aim for the second tier, with the same height but carrying a 440-pound (200-kilogram) payload for 200 hours.
“The 65,000-foot mark is the sweet spot where the airship would get as high as possible while still having enough air to propel against, because it needs propulsion to stay in the same spot. It’s also a good altitude in terms of average wind speed,” Rhodes said. So far, no powered airship has been able to sustain this altitude for more than eight hours. Balloons do fly at this height -- for example, weather balloons -- but they are subject to prevailing winds, and may be less reliable. In the framework being considered, the total airship prize purse may range from 2 to 3 million dollars, and could be split into multiple prize awards for successful demonstrations of the two competition tiers. NASA’s request for information is to gauge the interest among various communities that would be interested in using the airships or directly constructing them. A 2013 Keck Institute study, co-authored by Rhodes, showed that there is substantial interest in using airships for academic and possibly industrial uses. An airship could have a telescope on either end of it to create high-resolution images of stars and other celestial objects, for example. Scientists who study Earth could benefit from data collected by airships at this altitude, such as for investigating climate change and weather. “You would be able to follow weather patterns, even get above a hurricane. A satellite can’t do that because its orbit can’t be changed,” Rhodes said. There are also potential commercial uses. For instance, telecommunica-
tions companies could make use of the airships to provide wireless Internet to remote areas. “We’re only limited by our imagination,” Rhodes said. NASA is also interested in hearing from potential competitors who would be motivated to build the airships, in addition to non-profits interested in running the challenge or partnering on building a payload. Unlike a balloon, which travels with air currents, airships can stay in one spot. The stationary nature of airships allows them to have better downlink capabilities, because there is always a line-ofsight communication. “We’re not looking at any manned capability at the moment but that doesn’t preclude that in the future,” Rhodes said. NASA’s Centennial Challenges program offers incentive prizes to generate revolutionary solutions to problems of interest to NASA and the nation. The program seeks competitors from diverse and non-traditional sources, including small businesses, industry and academia. “Formulating a challenge that focuses on the technology of airships is an exciting new sector for Centennial Challenges to explore for a possible prize competition,” said Sam Ortega, Centennial Challenges program manager. The NASA Centennial Challenges office sponsors the development of the Airship Challenge. The 2013 Airships Study was supported by JPL and the Keck Institute for Space Studies at the California Institute of Technology. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Share-A-Meal for PUSD families. The event honors Stephen E. Fink, the co-founder of the Pasadena Sandwich Company who believed that nobody should ever be alone on Thanksgiving. “We are trying to distinguish a part of Pasadena that gets forgotten,” said Meghan Fink, coowner of the Pasadena Sandwich Company. “No matter what your background is, we want people to feel welcomed on
Thanksgiving.” On Wednesday, November 26th, at 3:00 p.m., Pasadena Firefighters and the Fink family helped prepare food and fill blessing (gift) bags for their Thanksgiving guests. Included in these bags are gift cards, school supplies, hygiene packs and first aid kits. PUSD’s Families in Transition office, which connects homeless and transitional students and their families with ap-
propriate services, is also collecting donations for families in need this holiday season. Donations of canned goods, toys, games, books and grocery gift cards can be dropped off at the Families in Transition Office (Room 127) located at 351 South Hudson Avenue in Pasadena. Contact PUSD Families in Transition at (626) 396-3600 ext. 88252 for more information.
The Pasadena City College Foundation’s 2nd Annual ‘Million Meals Marathon’ at PCC Parking Saturday was an effort to combat hunger in local communities. For 24 hours from 11 a.m. on Saturday to 11 a.m. on Sunday, organizers and volunteers were on campus collecting donations for non-perishable food items for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and the Pasadena Humane Society. This year’s Million Meals Marathon Food Drive also featured live music, giveaways, vendor booths, and a raffle for larger donations. Freund said the goal was to collect more than 2,000 pounds of non-perishable food. That amount will be enough to stock both food banks for two to three months. In 2013, our inaugural event gathered more than 1,500 pounds of non-perishable food for the L.A. Food Bank and more than 900 pounds of dry pet food – in addition to 310 cans of
wet food – for the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. This year, we’re looking for your help to assist an even larger group of people and ani-
mals! For more information call 626-585-7065. www.pasadena.edu/ give

Why Classic?
We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.
“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.
able to continue to collect usage data.
Compliance through great patient care
When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.
is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.
Our CPAP Circle of Care® program
was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.
Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance
Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).
Skeptical?
So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.
