Neighborhood Gleaning Organization Branches out to Join Food Forward

BY TERRY MILLER

In 2010, an Arcadia high school student started ‘Fruit for All’, a family and neighbor-run organization that would send groups of volunteers out to harvest backyard fruit from local trees ( often called gleaning ), then donate 100% to food banks in the area. See Zach Selby, the founder, noticed how much fruit his family’s guava tree produced, but even after eating it and giving plenty away, they still had more than they knew what to do with. Not wanting this food to go to waste, Zach was inspired to harvest and donate the fruit off his tree (such as to Foothill Unity in Monrovia). His work quickly caught on in the community, as more and more pickers and fruit donors joined the cause. In no time, the organization Fruit for All was formed.

CARROLL SHELBY FOUNDATION LAUNCHES SECOND ANNUAL COLLECTIBLE HOLIDAY ORNAMENT PROGRAM TO BENEFIT KIDS The Carroll Shelby Foundation’s holiday ornament fundraising campaign was so popular in 2013, that the non-profit organization will continue the series with one that will benefit the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) this year. The Carroll Shelby Foundation will offer the new exclusive ornament, available only through the charity, kicking off on Nov. 17. The new ornament celebrates the upcoming 50th anniversary of the 1965 Ford Shelby GT350. Established by legendary automotive icon and philanthropist Carroll Shelby, the Carroll Shelby Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides medical and educational support for children from their first heartbeat through their educational years. COTA is the premier organization

providing fundraising assistance to families hoping for a life-saving transplant. “When C a r r o l l

Shelby founded this organization, he challenged fellow car enthusiasts to rally around kids in need,” said Jenni Shreeves, executive director of the Carroll Shelby Foundation. “Over the years, we’ve been supporting that mission. The response to our first ornament was amaz-

ing, so we designed one for 2014. What could be more ‘Shelby’ than offering an exclusive collectible that commemorates an important milestone while also benefitting children in need.” This year’s ornament is white with blue accents to honor the first Shelby based on a Ford Mustang. Built in December 1964, the Ford Shelby GT350 was personally unveiled by Carroll Shelby at Riverside Raceway the next month. The 1965 model year Shelby GT350s were Wimbledon white; blue stripes were an option. The Carroll Shelby Foundation will offer the dazzling collectible ornament both online and at Carroll Shelby’s Store for $20. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit COTA, an organization that provides fund-

raising for children in need of organ transplantation. This will be the only official Shelby Holiday ornament in the world in 2014. “COTA provides assistance and support to families who are facing a life-saving transplant,” said Rick Lofgren, President of the Children’s Organ Transplant Association. “’Giving Hope and Making Miracles’ is more than a slogan for COTA; it is our guiding vision. COTA was founded on the belief

that every transplant-needy child and young adult deserves a second chance at life, and funding should never stand in the way of that.” To learn more about the Carroll Shelby Foundation, make a donation or order an item with the exclusive commemorative signature, go to www.carrollshelbyfoundation.org. Ornaments are only available for shipment within the United States.

News Flash: Not every teenager is preoccupied with texting, computers, video games and Facebook. In fact, we met a rather unique Junior at Arcadia High School in 2011 who spent a good deal of his spare time outdoors in the fresh air helping his fellow man. Zach Selby, then 17, got into some physically exacting work, picking fresh fruit from trees, boxing that fruit and delivering the copious yield to places such as the Foothill Unity Center and Los Angeles Mission. – all with a little help from his friends and consequently new business grew out of a relatively simple premise. The company – Fruit For All – as it is now known, was inescapable. The not-for profit group has been growing gradually but progressively each month as word gets out of this extraordinary endeavor. The total netted for the day we visited Zach was 645.5 pounds of tangerines, oranges and lemons. It was a big weekend, but “not our biggest” according to Judith Selby who helps her son and his crew every weekend. In late January 2011, Fruit for All had a 1,000-pound-plus weekend “once we added up the picks from our sat-

County Supports Experimental Help For Terminally Ill Support for state legislation to allow terminally ill patients to use experimental drugs or treatments not yet fully approved for consumer use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors on a motion by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich. “Terminally ill patients should not have to navigate the FDA’s bureaucratic process to access a drug and treatment that may help save their life,” said Supervisor Antonovich. As is allowed in a number of other states, terminally ill patients who have exhausted their options would only need their physician’s approval and a drug company willing to assist them, to pursue these potentially lifesaving opportunities.

ellite group and our own numbers.” Zach’s mother Judith told us in 2011 . The ambitious group of volunteers got a major boost in the fall 2010 when Arcadia resident Carla Heer and her family joined forces. Heer organized her four kids to knock on doors and hand out flyers in the area looking for donor fruit trees. It didn’t take long for homeowners to appreciate what these kids were doing. Word is gradually spreading and the buzz is nothing but positive. “Everyone wins” according to Zach’s mother. Kids and some parents are enjoying the out of door experience you simply don’t get on Facebook. The satellite groups, which go out on picks using the founders’ equipment – deliver the fruit to the L.A. mission on a regular basis. Foothill Unity Center’s executive director in 2011, Joan Whitenack said Fruit For All was “ an answer to our prayers.” A strong believer in fresh fruits and vegetables, especially local fruit, Whitenack said that she is convinced local fruit will help fight off local allergies and other ailments. The not-uncommon theory that has been tested with

time and honored by local gourmet chefs who believe in local, seasonal fruit and vegetables. Foothill Unity Center serves between 600-800 families per week with their Monrovia and Pasadena locations. Whitenack calls Zach Selby’s efforts a “miracle” as fresh fruit and vegetables have such a short shelf life as opposed to canned goods. Alas, Zach went to college and the organization continued to grow, all of the plump persimmons, gorgeous guavas, and peak pomegranates still needed to be harvested. Fruit For All found an answer in Food Forward. Food Forward is the largest non-profit fruit gleaning organization in Southern California; since 2009, Food Forward has rescued and donated over five million pounds of fresh, local produce that would otherwise go to waste. In 2012, Fruit for All merged with Food Forward, a partnership that ensured fruit in the San Gabriel Valley doesn’t have to go to waste. Fruit grows wildly under the sunny Southern California sun—but the abundance on the branches hangs in stark contrast to

LA’s serious problem of food insecurity. One in six adults and one in four children in LA County are food insecure, meaning they don’t get enough nutritious food to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Food Forward fills a vital role in the community by connecting those with abundance to those who need it the most. In the 5 years since their establishment, Food Forward has collected over 5 million lbs. of fruit through their Backyard Harvest, Farmers Market Recovery, and Wholesale Recovery Programs, donated 20 million servings, engaged 6,000 volunteers, and picked at over a thousand properties. In order to continue growing, Food Forward is always looking for more properties and volunteers. If you or someone you know has fruit to donate, check out toociforward org to register your tree. Spread the word! Anyone interested in volunteering can check out foodforward.org/events to find a pick or farmers market glean happening close by; the picks are fun, highly rewarding, and delicious.., so grab a friend or two and come out for a pick!

Hat Tricks! 5 Tips to Help Toddlers Keep Their Heads Warm On cool days All across America’s playgrounds, parents are chasing their toddlers, waving hats in the air, pleading and negotiating. While nature play is especially beneficial for children, with cooler weather upon us, it can be tempting to stay indoors and snuggle up! If your child is one of the many who

seem to want to pull their hats off when they’re outside, here may be a few reasons why, and how you can help! Remove tags and snip itchy seams. Many hats have tags sewn into the seams – a perpetual source of irritation for some kids. In addition, synthetic fibers such as

Leanne Southall: Social Service Worker, designer at bonnetfriend.com

polyester can be scratchy and stiff. Snip those tags off carefully, leaving no troubling rough edges. Consider natural fabrics like organic cotton that are gentler on children’s skin. Choose snug but gentle fit. Some hats are designed with to stay on by ‘hugging’ a child’s head, using pressure around the brim. However, that pressure can be bothersome for some sensitive children. Instead, opt for a hat that is designed to sit ‘gently’ on your child’s head, such as a bonnet or bucket style that is lightweight enough to not feel restrictive. Fit to be tied. Some children will be bothered by the edges of Velcro closure rubbing against their chin. Others may be preoccupied with the possibility of a snap closure accidentally snapping their skin. If your child feels everything from the

seams in her socks to the tags on her clothes, considering opting for a hat with soft straps that tie under the chin, or just to the side. That way, the hat can be worn snug, loose to allow room for braids and ponies. Or, if the hat sits easily on the child’s head, ties can be simply left hanging down. Be a good role model. Remember when your child surprised you by carrying around her doll in a sling, just like you? That’s because children learn by imitation, and modeling your choices is no exception. If you are not doing so already, be sure to wear a hat yourself. Your child will soon see that ‘we put on our hats before we leave our house. It is just part of what we do’. Be consistent. Just as one must sit in a car seat, so must one wear hats when playing outdoors. Our children look to us for guidance. Help them

out by keeping your routine consistent with these easy steps: Hang a special hook at eye level near the front door where her hat can ‘live’. Hang a fun photo of your child wearing her hat, right above the hook. Her hat will become the last thing she puts on as she leaves the house, and the first thing she takes off and hangs as she comes home. Cooler days are certainly upon us, but that doesn’t have to mean more indoor play time. Rosy cheeks and fresh air are what autumn is all about! Overall warmth and protection from cool breezes will help little bodies grow and enjoy outside fun. This changing season brings fresh smells, crispy leaves to crunch, and new birdsong to enjoy! Help your child keep her ears and head warm while she revels in the glory of changing seasons.

proved a policy statement that recommends the elimination of tobacco product sales in pharmacies. The statement reads: “The California State Board of Pharmacy recognizes that pharmacists are health care providers and pharmacies are in the business of improving customer health; therefore the board recommends that pharmacies and chain stores that include pharmacies eliminate the sale of tobacco, e-cigarettes and tobacco products, as these products are known to cause cancer, heart disease, lung disease and other health problems.” Board President Stan Weisser said board members could not justify the sale of tobacco products, which have been proven to contribute to patient health issues and death, in the public health setting of a pharmacy, or even in a store that contains a pharmacy. “The Board of Pharmacy’s paramount mandate is to protect consumers. This recommendation

sends a clear and consistent message that combining tobacco sales and a pharmacy within the same business is not in the best interests of public health,” Weisser said. Weisser said the tobacco product recommendation coincides with the board’s development of regulations which will allow a pharmacist to furnish nicotine replacement products to assist with smoking cessation. “In the near future, California pharmacists will play a greater role in providing health care and tobacco products have no place in that,” he said. The California State Board of Pharmacy protects and promotes the health and safety of California consumers by pursuing the highest quality of pharmacist care and the appropriate use of pharmaceuticals through education, communication, licensing, legislation, regulation and enforcement.

El Monte Airport renamed San Gabriel Valley Airport Continued from page 1

and Lancaster . The renaming of the airport was suggested years ago by Gabe Lopez, a pilot who flies his 1940 Stearman regularly out of the small airport. Lopez felt that the more regional name would attract more people to do business and use the small airfield more regularly. Lopez and his father: The third annual El Monte Airport Fly-in and Open House Sunday at the small but exciting little airport included all kinds of vintage aircraft including such beauties as a 1929 Travel Air 4000, Curtis Wright plane owned and operated by Gabe Lopez who showed his machines tovisitors at the airport Sunday. Lopez was also offering local flights. The emphasis at the Open House is always on young people hoping to explore aviation and aerospace as a career lopez told Beacon Media. Gabe Lopez’ famous Stearman was in the TV series JAG for 10 years. Jennifer Schlueter’s first-person report follows: When we received an email from Gabe Lopez offering us a plane ride on his 1940 Stearman, I was stoked, and immediately signed up for it. I had never flown in such a fighter plane. When I arrived at the airport on a cloudy Friday afternoon, I met Gabe and he kindly explained everything about his 1940 Stearman that I wanted to know. This plane was used as a training plane in World War II. Since it was known as the hardest plane to control, prospective pilots had 13 hours to master their craft on it. If they had proven their potential to their instruc-

tor, the pilots were trained further. As I sat down in the front seat, Gabe also equipped me with a helmet and goggles, and secured me with a harness that is also used in racing cars and a standard airplane belt. “Do you fly maneuvers at all?” I asked him. He said yes and asked me if I wanted him to fly any. I did, and so he told me he would. Gabe then entered the back seat, started the engine, and we rolled onto the runway. When we took off, I realized that I could literally jump out off the plane if I wanted to because there were no windows and our only safety was a harness. I had imagined it to be colder because of the missing windows, however, the windshield in front of me blocked out most of the cold. Because I had wished to fly over Downtown, Gabe got as close to it as possible, then took me towards the Hollywood sign and Bev-

erly Hills, Silver Lake, and Pasadena. The skies were mostly gray with a bit of hazy sunshine in between, but to me that made it all the more interesting as opposed to a simple, clear view. After we flew over Pasadena, Gabe tapped me on my shoulder, and asked if I was ready for some maneuvers. I nodded, even though I was very, very nervous. Gabe quickly turned the plane’s nose downward, and my stomach dropped as the plane did. A few more rollercoaster moves down, left, and right, later, we returned to the airport, and landed as smoothly as ever. As Gabe set up his plane to go back into its hangar, he told me about his 91 year old father, who had served in wars and received countless badges. With a golf cart, Gabe maneuvered his plane onto its designated spot in the hangar, and then accompanied me to the exit of the airport. What a wonderful experience!
