South Pasadena’s Tiger Football Team’s season ended on Friday night even before the game was played, but the students did not know it. The tigers won their game against La Canada, the latter team’s homecoming, but the results were moot as the game was deemed forfeited because of an alleged violation of CIF rules. This game determined who would receive an automatic berth in the playoffs. La Canada has now received that berth. La Canada’s principal, Ian McFeat, is said to have called South Pasadena’s principal Janet Anderson telling her that the team had violated CIF-SS Blue Book Rule 512 that prohibits photographing an opponent’s practice session with that opponent’s authorization. The allegation is that Nick Konrad, the brother

Glendale Church thieves net expensive electronics According to a local TV station, police in Glendale were searching Monday for two men wanted for stealing thousands of dollars worth of electronics and other items from three area churches and a YMCA. Video released by police showed a man wearing a T-shirt and jeans entering the property of the L.A. Christian Church on Lowell Avenue on March 20 and walking around the grounds for more than an hour. He eventually pried open the church office door, according to a news release from the Glendale

Police Department. The man even turned the office surveillance camera around in an apparent attempt to hide his actions, police said. On the video, the man could be seen holding a white cloth in his hand as he handled items and rummaged through drawers. Police said he also broke into the Central Christian Church next door, where he burglarized the church office. The burglar was described as a heavy-set man, between 30 and 40 years old, standing 6 feet tall and weighing 250 to 275 pounds with a bald head.

Both churches had experienced numerous burglaries and thefts of electronic items in the past, police said. A second man was also being sought for allegedly burglarizing a YMCA on Louise Street and stealing boxes of candy, money and a $1,600 guitar, according to police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot. The same man then allegedly broke into the First United Methodist Church on North Kenwood Street. Anyone with information on either man was urged to contact the Glendale Police Department at 818-548-2097.

Man arrested for fondling boys at Dave and Buster's in Arcadia On November 10, 2014, at approximately 6:44 P.M., officers of the Arcadia Police Department were dispatched to the Westfield Mall located at 400 S. Baldwin Avenue on a report of a sexual battery involving a minor. The officers also received information the suspect was being detained by mall security personnel. Preliminary investigation determined the victim was a 10-year-old male, who was fondled by the suspect while in the restroom of the “Dave & Buster’s.” The victim notified his mother soon after the incident had Please see page 4

“A Golden State of Mind: Yes, it’s true…now EVERYTHING The Storytelling Genius of Huell Howser” comes in bacon flavor J&D’s Foods is a funny premieres Thanksgiving Day company, really darn funny. They’ve just launched Bacon Moustache Wax among other things! Yes, the world’s first Bacon-scented Moustache Wax is available just in time for November. Like their press release said… ”As always, you’re welcome.” Bacon Moustache Wax combines “two of the most powerful forces in the universe - cured meat and moustaches - into one powerful, gravity-defying wax,” according to founders Justin and Dave. According to this dynamic duo, “Moustaches are a mark of power, distinction and class. They make the wearer more attractive and increase cognitive ability when stroked. People with moustaches are generally very successful in their chosen fields and held in high regard - individuals like Teddy Roosevelt, Salvador Dali, Magnum PI, the Monopoly Man, Lando Calrissian, Ron Burgundy, Wyatt Earp, and Ulysses S. Grant all attribute their incredible successes to their prominent mouth

brows.” That being said, as a vegetarian who has a moustache (Terry Miller)…Bacon would be the last thing I’d want my man hairs to smell like. However, I’m apparently in the minority. Everything is better with bacon, a colleague informs me. “Bacon is the moustache of meats. Its smell is intoxicating, its taste is invigorating, and its versatility is renowned.” And, since we're in the middle of that monthlong charity mustache grow known as Movember, the J&D's folks have pledged a buck from the sale of each tin to the Movember Foundation, which works to raise funds and awareness for men's health issues. Bacon Moustache Wax is available starting last week

because his own son plays at neighboring St. Francis High School. Coach Konrad said that he did not know that the game was to be forfeited despite the outcome, although he did not that he was being suspended from coaching at that game. He said he choose not to fight his own suspension since the game was to go on without the students knowing the reason for the sus-

pension. His letter also said that had he known, he would have urged the parents to protest Apparently the decision that the game was to be forfeited to La Canada was made by the Rio Hondo League principals and not the CIF. There is some question if South Pasadena could have submitted a bid for another berth in the playoff. They have opted not to do so.

Monrovia mansions in the crosshairs The recent, local uproar regarding newly built, oversized homes and the resulting impact on vintage neighborhoods is not an issue limited to this city. Communities across the country are reacting, mostly negatively, to the proliferation of so-called “McMansions” for a very straightforward reason - they simply do not fit into the nearby areas. That the problem seems to be growing in Monrovia is particularly disturbing, given that in order to construct a new home, one must be torn down. (Vacant land here is non-existent.) Because of the high density of pre1940s houses within the town, that usually entails the demolition of a vintage home. This alteration of the urban landscape can have profound effects, from changing property values to limiting the creation of new businesses. Monrovia is at a

crossroads. It can choose to ignore the immediate crisis and assume a “business as usual” posture. As a consequence of that inaction, houses that do not qualify as “potential landmarks” will continue to be relegated to the not worthy pile, ignoring their role as contributors to a potential historic district and to the overall character of the community as a whole. Or Monrovia can make some difficult decisions to reconcile the issue of property rights versus preservation that is at the heart of the matter. We have been given an inheritance – the architectural heritage of the community. We have the privilege of enjoying it while we are here and a responsibility to leave it better than how we found it after we have left. I sincerely hope we fulfill that obligation. Jim Wigton, President Monrovia Historic Preservation Group, www.mohpg. org

Van Nuys man sentenced to 30 Months in Federal Prison for tax fraud A Van Nuys man was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment for laundering over $860,000 in funds that were the proceeds of a scheme to defraud the Internal Revenue Service. Karen Aharonian, 37, formerly of Glendale, received the sentence late this afternoon from United States District Judge Dean D. Pregerson. According to documents filed with the court, Aharonian pleaded guilty in July to count four of a seven-count indictment charging him with laundering the proceeds of a scheme to defraud the IRS through the submission of false and fraudulent tax returns. Specifically, Aharonian admitted to cashing 34 third-party checks on September 5, 2012 totaling $184,330. All these checks were funded by fraudulently obtained income tax refunds that were direct deposited into bank accounts. The 34 third-party checks cashed by Aharoni-

an were signed, but otherwise blank when brought to the check cashing business. The check cashing business was owned by an unidentified husband and wife team who have also been charged with money laundering. The amounts the checks would be made payable for were provided to the check casher by Aharonian, in the form of post-it notes. Aharonian admitted to laundering funds in the amount of $860,695.76 between August 2010 and October 2012, a period of a little over two years. According to documents filed with the court, ‘the amount is particularly large in light of the fact that defendant was incarcerated for over a year of that time frame.’ In 2011, Aharonian was convicted of a conspiracy to commit racketeering and was sentenced to 15 months federal custody. He was incarcerated on that charge from October 2010 to November 2011.

Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts welcomes 25 new provisional members Pasadena Showcase for the Arts (PSHA) welcomes 25 new Provisional Members for 2014-15. Dubbed the Treblemakers by Provisional Chair Marybeth Rehman-Dittu, the new group represents all the hard work, commitment and dedication required of members. A play on words, the “Treblemakers” name reflects PSHA’s dedication to music education. The meaning of treble in music refers to high notes and a treble clef is used to notate such notes. The new group is a welcome addition to the all-volunteer organization. PSHA members work tirelessly to produce the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design whose proceeds go to funding music programs in the community. “We are extremely excited to have this new group of volunteers,” said PSHA President Katherine Watkins. “The backbone of our organization is our members and without their volunteerism and dedication, we would not be able to achieve the successes we have throughout the years. This Provisional class is our future.”

The Provisional Members include: Pasadena residents: Paula Martin Fishbeck, Teresa Peterson, Salpy Pontrelli, Colleen Robertson; San Marino residents: Susan Bermingham, Jeannie Tsai; Altadena residents: Annelise Dachel, Mercedes Victoria Bowie; San Dimas resident: Dewi Slayton; San Gabriel resident: Christy Granieri; Arcadia resident: Randa Keysselitz; Montebello resident: Rosemarie Ribeiro; Los Angeles resident: Holly Lake; Santa Monica resident: Michele Vercoutere; La Canada residents: Hilda Hacobian, Terri Kagawa, Bonnie Marshall, Cynthia Gilbert, Sally Hazen; West Covina resident: Beth Hanson; Glendale residents: Deborah Hudson, Samantha Marlowe, Debann Orfalea, Janis Rosebrook; and Santa Clarita resident: Allison Maginn. How do I know I’m getting a fair deal on a flipped home? By Redfin agent Alec Traub If you plan on buying a Los Angeles-area home in the near future, chances are you’ll come across a flip in your search. 2013 was a banner year for house flippers. They grossed an average of $90,200 per flipped home across major U.S. housing markets, according to Redfin research. Of the top 25 hottest neighborhoods for home flipping last year, 10 were in Los Angeles, most of which were on the eastside and in the San Gabriel Valley. This is not surprising since housing inventory was notoriously tight and demand for real estate in these areas led to unprecedented bidding wars in 2013. As 2014 winds down many of the best deals that were grabbed by investors last year are now making their way back to the market and being sold for a healthy profit. Here’s how to ensure you get a fair deal when considering to buy a flipped home. Spot the flip There are several telltale signs you’re dealing with an investor-owned property. If the home is vacant and professionally staged, you can bet an investor is afoot. Owner-occupants rarely install brand new landscaping in order to sell their home. If the yard is smattered with saplings, it’s probably a flip. Of course, one of the best ways to spot a flip is to simply look at the property records. If the home was bought less than a year ago and it’s already back on the market, it’s likely being sold

by an investor. Evaluate the efficiency Now that you know you’re dealing with a flipper and therefore may be paying a premium, an excellent way to judge the quality of renovations is to consider what has been done for the home’s energy efficiency. Yes, buying a high-efficiency home will save you some serious money on monthly energy expenses. But perhaps more importantly, if an investor has paid attention to the details that make for an energy-efficient home, it’s a good sign they did their due diligence elsewhere as well. Look for Energy Star rated appliances, well-framed, vinyl, double-paned windows with wool pile weather stripping and new attic floor insulation – if you can see floor joints or the insulation looks dingy, it was likely not replaced. Check under the hood Many flippers will slap some paint on the walls, throw in a new fridge and range and call it a day. Those who are really committed to quality renovations will also pay attention to the home’s guts. Check under the sink and look at the plumbing – if the pipes are wet or there is lots of mineral buildup, the plumbing was probably not touched. Look closely at the duct work: Old ducting is simply sheet metal shaped into tubes or rectangles. If the duct work was redone it will be modern fiberglass or even double-backed flexible aluminum Perhaps most important-

ly, check out the foundation: A home inspector can do this best, but since many flippers buy at bargain prices, there may be structural defects involved that have gone unnoticed or unaddressed. Look for sticking doors and windows, bulges or visible cracks in the foundation and slanted or uneven walls and floors. Determine a fair price Since many well-informed homebuyers know exactly what the current owner paid for the property by checking online records, it’s easy to get caught up in comparing today’s asking price with yesterday’s deal. But there are a few things to keep in mind when assessing the fair market value of a flip. Don’t put too much stock in the previous sale price. Yes, flippers are looking for profits, but it is very difficult to determine what a flipper’s margin actually is just by looking at the previous price paid for the property. You must consider the cost of renovations, the seller’s closing costs (which can be substantial) and any price appreciation/depreciation that has occurred since the previous sale. The sale price of comparable properties in the market ought to determine if you’re getting a fair deal. That means a sober assessment of the price other flipped homes in the neighborhood are fetching. Only an experienced local agent can accurately determine this number, but you can get started by comparing similar homes during your online search.

Keeping fitness through the holidays November is here and the holiday season is now in motion. Ready or not, here they come: parties, shopping, decorating, travel, food and more food. While the holidays bring joy, they can also be a stressful and disrupting time of year. Often times folks who have been on a regular exercise schedule get sidetracked and those who have yet to begin one will more than likely put it off until the first of the year. Instead of allowing the holidays to take you completely off of your fitness journey, or waiting until January to begin one, you can take action now that will prepare you for an easier transition into the New Year. Here are a few strategies to help you along the way: 1. Try different activi-

ties and venues until something sticks. It can be a class, coach, personal trainer, mentor, or team, whatever it takes to bring you to a place of adherence. No guilt if you need to restart every week, or every day. If you fail, get up, start again, and keep moving. 2. Keep it simple. Make sure that whatever activity you choose is easy for you to prepare for and is geographically desirable. This ensures that it will more easily fit it into your busy holiday schedule. 3. Make it fun. Maybe you just need to feel good right now, so choose something that you want to do, such as: dance class, yoga, stretching class, Pilates, spin, a simple weekly walk, or a swim. Do whatever entices you to be ac-

tive.

4. No need to go it alone: grab your neighbor, your spouse, your best friend, or find a community that supports your interests. Start to incorporate some fitness, no matter how small, into your schedule now. This will help you to develop a mindset and habit of exercising. It may take you many “starts” to get on track and that is okay! It is better to keep starting over rather than to give up and spend the next two months overeating and underexercising. Imagine finishing 2014 without gaining a pound, and confidently embracing your fitness journey in the New Year. A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.
