“As Night Comes” features former Rose Queen in first independent film of her career BY DALE LAWRENCE

An anonymous caller gave information that helped solve the case of graffiti that tarnished the memorial in Alhambra just days before Veteran’s Day celebrations in San Gabriel Valley. Abel Samano, 18, of Monterey Park was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism. He uses the moniker, “AMER,” according to police reports. Workers discovered graffiti scrawled on the Veterans Memorial Wall on Nov. 5. The memorial is located at Alhambra Park, 500 N. Palm Ave. Workers also found similar markings elsewhere in the park, including on a nearby swimming pool facility. The graffiti was cleaned up.

A provocative independent film, worthy of parents and teens alike, Richard Zelniker’s gritty High School thriller, AS NIGHT COMES is remarkably timely and relevant to the world we live in today while also paying homage to such classics as Clockwork Orange and The Outsiders. Avoiding clichés and filled with a weighty truth, the story is seen through the eyes of angst-filled teenagers struggling to find their identities and place in teen culture, As Night Comes is a powerful, eyeopening, beautifully structured tapestry of images that will hopefully begin a much needed conversation. Featuring a talented ensemble cast of “ones to watch” including Luke Baines (The Ever After), Myko Olivier (Castle), Evanne Friedmann (iCarly), Stacia Hitt (Neighbors) and Jesse Kove (Bunyan), As Night Comes follows troubled new kid, Sean Holloway, who falls in with a group of teenage outcasts called ‘The Misfits’ and under the wing of its dysfunctional yet charismatic

leader, Ricky. On the eve of Halloween, Ricky’s anarchist plan for revenge spirals out of control, culminating in brutal violence, and ultimately Sean’s fight for survival and freedom. Tackling important issues ranging from peer pressure to bullying to domestic abuse, As Night Comes does not rely on horrific violence and external terror as so many films do, but rather captures the audience’s attention immediately through striking performances and realistic dialogue, never letting go of the viewer. Directed by Richard Zelniker, his intention to illicit raw, deep and honest emotion works, creating almost a documentary experience that hits you with its stark and brutal truth and successfully draws you deep into the world of the characters inner turmoil and brutal conflict. It is not your average teen film, there is a rawness that is reflective of the real world. There is at least one, if not many, moments throughout the film that evokes an emotion, a memory, Please see page 5

always, you’re welcome.” Bacon Moustache Wax combines “two of the most powerful forces in the universe - cured meat and moustaches - into one powerful, gravity-defying wax, ” According to founders Justin and Dave” According to this dynamic duo, “ Moustaches are a mark of power, distinction and class. They make the wearer more attractive and increase cognitive ability when stroked. People with moustaches are generally very successful in their chosen fields and held in high regard - individuals like Teddy Roosevelt, Salvador Dali, Magnum PI, the Monopoly Man, Lando Calrissian, Ron Burgundy, Wyatt Earp, and Ulysses S. Grant all attribute their incredible successes to their prominent mouth brows.” That being said, as a vegetarian who has a moustache…Bacon would be the last thing I’d want my man hairs to smell like. However, I’m apparently in the minority.

Everything is better with bacon, a colleague informs me. “ Bacon is the moustache of meats. Its smell is intoxicating, its taste is invigorating, and its versatility is renowned.” And, since we’re in the middle of that monthlong charity mustache grow known as Movember, the J&D’s folks have pledged a buck from the sale of each tin to the Movember Foundation, which works to raise funds and awareness for men’s health issues. Bacon Moustache Wax is available starting last week at www.BaconMakesTheMan.com for $12.99 per tin and for every tin pur-

chased, we will donate $1 to the Movember Foundation for men’s health. Developed in partnership with The Seattle Soap Shop (www.SeattleSoapShop.com), Bacon Moustache Wax is handmade in small batches from the highest quality beeswax and petroleum jelly. Both pliable and aromatic, it provides lasting volume and superior moustache control. “So whether you’re training for the World Beard & Moustache Championships, are a Mo Bro or impressing that special someone, one thing is for sure - your upper lip will never smell so good.” Say the guys at J&D Foods. Whatever next?

have developed technology that allows cyborg cockroaches, or biobots, to pick up sounds with small microphones and seek out the source of the sound. The technology is designed to help emergency personnel find and rescue survivors in the aftermath of a disaster. The researchers have also developed technology that can be used as an “invisible fence” to keep the biobots in the disaster area. “In a collapsed building, sound is the best way to find survivors,” says Dr. Alper Bozkurt, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at NC State and senior author of two papers on the work. The biobots are equipped with electronic backpacks that control the cockroach’s movements. Bozkurt’s research team has created two types of customized backpacks using microphones. One type of biobot has a single microphone that can capture

to be wirelessly transmitted to first responders. The second type of biobot is equipped with an array of three directional microphones to detect the direction of the sound. The research team has also developed algorithms that analyze the sound from the microphone array to localize the source of the sound and steer the biobot in that direction. The system worked well during laboratory testing. Video of a laboratory test of the microphone array system is available at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=oJXEPcv-FMw. “The goal is to use the biobots with highresolution microphones to differentiate between sounds that matter – like people calling for help – from sounds that don’t matter – like a leaking pipe,” Bozkurt says. “Once we’ve identified sounds that matter, we can use the biobots equipped with microphone arrays to zero in on where those sounds are coming from.”

has previously shown that biobots can be used to map a disaster area. Funded by National Science Foundation CyberPhysical Systems Program, the long-term goal is for Bozkurt and Lobaton to merge their research efforts to both map disaster areas and pinpoint survivors. The researchers are already working with collaborator Dr. Mihail Sichitiu to develop the next generation of biobot networking and localization technology. Bozkurt’s team also recently demonstrated technology that creates an invisible fence for keeping biobots in a defined area. This is significant because it can be used to keep biobots at a disaster site, and to keep the biobots within range of each other so that they can be used as a reliable mobile wireless network. This technology could also be used to steer biobots to light sources, so that the miniaturized solar panels on biobot backpacks can

A paper on the microphone sensor research, “Acoustic Sensors for Biobotic Search and Rescue,” was presented Nov. 5 at the IEEE Sensors 2014 conference in Valencia, Spain. Lead author of the paper is Eric Whitmire, a former undergraduate at NC State. The paper was co-authored by Tahmid Latif, a Ph.D. student at NC State, and Bozkurt. The paper on the invisible fence for biobots, “Towards Fenceless Boundaries for Solar Powered Insect Biobots,” was presented Aug. 28 at the 36th Annual International IEEE EMBS Conference in Chicago, Illinois. Latif was the lead author. Coauthors include Tristan Novak, a graduate student at NC State, Whitmire and Bozkurt. Video released by police showed a man wearing a T-shirt and jeans entering the property of the L.A. Christian Church on Lowell Avenue on March 20 and walking around the grounds for more than an hour. He eventually pried open the church office door, according to a news release from the Glendale

Police Department. The man even turned the office surveillance camera around in an apparent attempt to hide his actions, police said. On the video, the man could be seen holding a white cloth in his hand as he handled items and rummaged through drawers. Police said he also broke into the Central Christian Church next door, where he burglarized the church office. The burglar was described as a heavy-set man, between 30 and 40 years old, standing 6 feet tall and weighing 250 to 275 pounds with a bald head.

Both churches had experienced numerous burglaries and thefts of electronic items in the past, police said. A second man was also being sought for allegedly burglarizing a YMCA on Louise Street and stealing boxes of candy, money and a $1,600 guitar, according to police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot. The same man then allegedly broke into the First United Methodist Church on North Kenwood Street. Anyone with information on either man was urged to contact the Glendale Police Department at 818-548-2097.

a pain, that is uniquely personal to the viewer watching. Luke Baines is particularly mesmerizing as the baddest of boys, Ricky. His characterization of a mentally disturbed drugaddled lost and angry soul, lashing out against authority and those that do not follow his lead, keeps you eerily glued to the screen even when you want to look away. Stand out performances, though there are many throughout the film, also include stars Myko Olivier as Sean,

who’s good looking “odd man out” breaks the norm of the awkward-looking outcast and former 2010 Tournament of Roses’ Rose Queen Evanne Friedmann as Sarah, the good-girl love interest of a struggling Sean. Another stand-out in the film? The exceptional production design, lighting and camera work which creatively blend to fill the screen with images that are simultaneously fascinating, haunting, beautiful, repellent and symbolic.

As Night Comes also features a captivating soundtrack from Teenage Atari Riot that keeps you thoroughly engaged throughout the movie. Zelniker’s, As Night Comes, begins its weeklong Los Angeles theatrical release at Laemmle’s Music Hall in Beverly Hills on Friday November 14, 2014. Following its theatrical run, As Night Comes will be available via VOD on December 5, 2014. My recommendation, don’t miss it.

Visual Artists Guild to bring attention to Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement Visual Artists Guild’s Great Firewall of China Marching Brigade will be represented at the Pasadena Doo-Dah Parade on Saturday, November 15, to bring attention to the Umbrella Movement in support of Hong Kong people’s right to vote and to stand for election. In 1997, Hong Kong was returned to China under the SinoBritish Joint Declaration of the principle of “One Country Two Systems” whereby Hong Kong would retain its Capitalist system. The chief executive of Hong Kong is currently elected by 1200

people from different sectors but dominated by the business sectors. It was agreed upon in 2007 by Beijing that by 2017 there will be universal suffrage allowing all of Hong Kong citizens to elect their chief executive; however this August, a White Paper by Beijing indicated that the candidates must be first nominated by a committee of 1200 and Beijing will approve for 2 people who are allowed to run. The people call it Fake Universal Suffrage. The people of Hong Kong felt they were betrayed. Students started to boycott classes starting on September 22.

When Hong Kong police started to use tear gas and pepper spray against the peaceful student protesters, it galvanized the people of Hong Kong to join in the protest. In more than 5 weeks of protests, no one car has been overturned and no one store window has been broken. Dubbed the most civil of civil disobedience, protesters started using umbrellas to protect themselves; thus the Umbrella Movement is born. Strikes by Kaiser, Tracy, Watsonville RNs Tuesday Kick Off National Wave of Actions for Improved Patient Safety and Ebola Precautions Two-day strikes starting Tuesday that affect nearly 20,000 registered nurses at 86 Kaiser Permanente hospitals and clinics, a Sutter hospital in Tracy, and Watsonville Community Hospital kicking off a wave of protests at 15 states and the District of Columbia over eroding patient care conditions symbolized by inadequate Ebola safeguards at most U.S. hospitals. Kaiser RNs and nurse practitioners will be on strike at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning in Antioch, Fremont, Fresno, Oakland, Redwood City, Richmond, Roseville, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Jose, San Leandro, San Rafael, Santa Clara, Santa Rosa, South Sacramento, South San Francisco, Stockton, Vacaville, Vallejo, Walnut Creek. Large noon rallies will be held at Kaiser Oakland and Kaiser South Sacramento. Tuesday’s strikes, which have a particular focus on patient care concerns from safe staffing to cuts in patient services to safe patient handling practices. On Wednesday, November 12, California RNs will join with nurses and allies in 14 other states and the District of Columbia to step up the call for improved safeguards in the face of the deadly Ebola virus. In California, in addition to Kaiser, Sutter Tracy and Watsonville, nurses will also be picketing at hospitals that are part

of Dignity Health, Sutter, St. Joseph Health System, Memorial Care, and the University of California medical centers. For striking nurses, the failure to secure Ebola safeguards symbolizes what nurses see as a steady erosion in care standards that increasingly put patients as well as nurses and other frontline health workers at risk. “Nurses, who have been willing to stand by the patients whether it’s the flu, whether it’s Ebola, whether it’s cancer, are now being asked to put themselves in harm’s way unprotected, unguarded,” said NNU Executive Director Rose Ann DeMoro, in a press conference announcing the actions. On patient care issues, Kaiser RNs have cited cuts in hospital services at a number of Kaiser hospitals, sharp restrictions on admitting patients for hospital care or early discharge of patients who still need hospitalization. “In our Emergency Department,” said Kaiser Redwood City RN Sheila Rowe today, “we are holding patients who should be admitted to the hospital. These elderly patients are kept on uncomfortable gurneys for many hours, unable to rest or sleep because of the noise and influx of patients.” Kaiser RN Katy Roemer told reporters over the weekend that Kaiser nurses are “not seeing the resources

we need on a daily basis to provide safe care. We are going out on strike about patient safety issues.” “Our call for a strike speaks loudly and clearly that we want management to stop their stalling in bargaining our first contract, stop the unfair labor practices, and provide the safeguards and resources needed to deliver safe patient care. It’s high time to listen to the nurses,” said Sutter Tracy RN Dotty Nygard. On Ebola, what NNU is demanding is the optimal personal protective equipment for nurses and other caregivers who interact with Ebola patients. That means full-body hazmat suits that meet the American Society for Testing and Materials F1670 standard for blood penetration, F1671 standard for viral penetration, and that leave no skin exposed or unprotected, and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-approved powered air purifying respirators with an assigned protection factor of at least 50. Second, that all facilities provide continuous, rigorous interactive training for RNs and other health workers who might encounter an Ebola patient, that includes practice putting on and taking off the hazmat suits where some of the greatest risk of infection can occur.

Boston Marathon Tragedy Survivor Honored By Optimist Youth Homes and Family Services More than $170,000 was raised at the 2014 Mentor Awards Gala to benefit the treatment and education programs for at-risk youth served by Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services. Held Oct. 23 at a private club in downtown Los Angeles, the evening honored three of Optimist’s major supporters – survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing tragedy John and Karen Odom of Redondo Beach and labor attorney and philanthropist Alfred J. Landegger, Esq. of Tarzana. A special Helping Hand Award was given to the Burbank/Magnolia Park Optimist Club. Co-hosted by CNN’s Michaela Pereira and KTLA’s Chris Schauble, over 275 guests feted the Odom’s and Landegger at the dinner and auction. The

dinner chair was Carolyn Rodriguez of City National Bank, last year’s Mentor Award Recipient. The proceeds include $19,000 which was raised through a live auction at the gala and earmarked to support the installation of artificial turf on the agency’s main campus as well as foster parent recruitment. LA County Supervisor Don Knabe presented the Odom’s with the Mentor Award and Gary Gitlin, Esq. presented the Humanitarian Award to Landegger. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
