CASA of Los Angeles’ “Day at the Races” raises $55,000

By SHEL SEGAL Most people like to sleep in on a Sunday morning. But for some at the San Gabriel Mission it’s a time for helping others. Having started earlier this year, Guido Zamalloa, a deacon with the mission’s church, leads a group of about 60 volunteers every Sunday in effort to feed the area’s hungry. “We’re having a distribution of food for the needy, homeless and low income families,” ZamalPlease see page 3

CASA of Los Angeles’ “Day at the Races,” took place at the Santa Anita Racetrack this past Sunday. The event raised $55,000 that will help with the upcoming “Glamour Gowns” event in March. Last year Glamour Gowns provided over 400 young women in foster care from all over Los Angeles with new formal gowns, shoes, jewelry and more from major designers, all at no cost. This year’s event will also provide boys formal wear. The event is organized by a dedicated volunteer committee working with CASA of Los Angeles.

A salute to veterans November 11 at Pasadena Senior Center Every year Pasadena says thank you to America’s veterans, salutes their service, honors their sacrifices and promises their dedication to our nation will never be forgotten. The free, annual Veterans Day commemoration at Centennial Square in front of Pasadena City Hall will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, and will end with a flyover by the Condor Squadron of World War IIera planes at 11:11 a.m. At 11:30 a.m. the salute to veterans will continue when everyone is invited to the Pasadena Senior Center, just down the block at 85 E. Holly St., where hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and cherry cobbler will be served. Entertainment will be provided by
