The seven members of the 2015 Tournament of Roses Royal Court were announced Monday at Tournament House. Selected from a group of 31 finalists, the Royal Court will attend as many as 100 community and media functions, acting as ambassadors of the Tournament and the Pasadena community at large. The announcement follows a month-long process in which more than 700 Pasadena-area young women participated. The Tournament’s Queen and Court Committee made its selections based on a number of criteria including poise, speaking ability, academic achievement, and community and school involvement. California’s law makes water bills of state officials defining water rates and rules public record. Thus, The Center for Investigative Reporting examined their data and found the state’s representatives wasting up to eleven times as much water as the typical California household. Fresno City Councilman Oliver Baines is responsible for this number, using 4,000 gallons a day. After finding out that he had defective sprinklers using 1.24 million gallons of water in 2012, Baines now cut his usage to 149 gallons per day in March of this year. According to NBC, he apologized and admitted to not being “a model of water usage.”

Next to Baines’ wasting due to leaking sprinklers, Mike Soubirous, member of the Riverside City Council, was found to be the biggest water wasting official in the state. His desert home with a “1-acre lot with cascades of flowering shrubs and a weeping willow tree,” as NBC describes it, consumes enough water to serve eight households – more than 1 million gallons a year. Soubirous told NBC that he doesn’t know what to do to conserve water; “sell [his] house to set that example, or just abolish all [of his] shrubs?” In July, Riverside prohibited watering more than four days a week, which Subirous supported. However,

last month he was caught on video running his sprinklers seven consecutive nights. Furthermore, the CIR discovered that more than 50% water agency supervisors consume more water than the state’s average household. Randy Record, chairman of the board of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, for example, with more than 1,100 gallons per day in 2013, uses three times as much. While deciding on laws that save water and $500 fines for water wasters, water use among 60 percent of the officials has increased from 2012 to 2013. Please see page 4

Locally shot movie ‘Life Inside Out' - Screens Oct 17 Real Life Local Mom/Son Star in film After a multi-awards journey on the festival circuit, a new film is now having its theatrical debut exclusively in the LA market. Life Inside Out, remarkably big hearted without being corny, was shot primarily in the Pasadena/Monrovia/Highland Park area. the screenplay based on her own experiences as a mom of 2 who had almost forgotten how

much she loved singing and songwriting until it became clear that picking up the guitar again might be the only way to connect with her in-

creasingly distant son. His surprising moral support and musical curiosity led him to learning how to play ultimately write and sing his own songs (many featuring his mom). They harmonize beautifully!! Mothering is not Maggie’s only skill. Aside from co-writing the screenplay for Life Inside Out, she has worked extensively in television appearing in such productions as “The X Files,” “Chicago Hope,” “Six Feet Under,” “Manic,” and countless others. As a singersongwriter, she has released two full length albums and performs her original music in clubs around Los Angeles.

California’s Water Officials Neglect Their Own Laws and Waste Water

Family Members Can Ask Court to Seize Guns from Unstable Loved Ones

Continued from page 1

Trent Orr of the Earthjustice environmental law firm in San Francisco told NBC that officials “should be leading by example, not telling the

little people you regulate that they need to tighten their belts while you proceed as if nothing had happened and in fact use more water.”

On a more positive note and despite water wasters, water usage has dropped 11.5 percent in August compared to the previous year.

By jennifer schlueter After 22-year-old Elliot Rodger went on a shooting rampage this May in Isla Vista killing 6 and wounding 12 more people, officials called, again, for stricter gun control laws. California assemblywomen Nancy Skinner consequently sponsored a bill allowing guns to be seized from mentally ill individuals. The law, which was signed into effect last Tuesday, allows people to demand a court order to temporarily seize guns from family members who pose a threat to the community or themselves. In order to prevent these potentially dangerous individuals from buying firearms, they will also be added to a list. Prior to his planned

shooting, Elliot had legally acquired three guns, and his parents had repeatedly warned police of his unstable condition. California has recognized that “family members are the ones who most acutely understand when their loved ones are in a dangerous situation,” according to the executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Josh Horwitz, and thus, has now become the first state of the country to allow them to ask for a court order seizing firearms. In other states only law enforcement officials have the right to do so. Skinner told the New York Times: “This puts California in the leadership on efforts to stop gun violence, and

it gives a very effective tool to law enforcement and families to intervene before a shooting tragedy occurs.” Opponents of the bill argue against it because it would take away the rights of the Second Amendment and is not an adequate measure to prevent mass shootings. According to the NY Times, Gun rights supporter and California assemblyman Tim Donnelly said: “Every one of us wants to prevent a mass shooting. The question is: Would this bill stop that? I don’t believe you can ever stop that with laws. I don’t believe you can legislate evil out of the hearts of men.”

dedicated her life to raising her family and serving her community through many philanthropic activities, including serving as an advisory board member for Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services. She has also enjoyed a forty year career in the real estate industry. On April 15, 2013, John, Karen, their son, son-in-law, grandson and close friends were standing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon to cheer on their daughter when the first of two bombs went off and their lives were changed forever. John was critically injured and endured eleven surgeries in twenty-eight days, spent fourteen days on life support, six weeks in intensive care and months of rehabilitation. The Odom’s were told John might not live, and if he did, he might have brain damage and would most likely never walk again. Fortunately, John survived and during his recovery his goals were to walk again, dance with his wife and play golf. Although paralyzed from the knee down on his left leg, his determination,

the love and support of family and friends and the prayers of thousands of people around the world have all helped him accomplish all of his goals and more. Alfred J. sary. In great condition, valued at $24,000, the now yellow bike, was green when it was stolen 42 years ago on March 4, 1972. It was taken from the backyard of a police officer’s residence in Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He passed away on October 7, 2010, nearly four years ago to this day. His oldest son, Edgar Howard Johnson, Jr., is very excited about its return and

said, “My Dad would be tickled to get it back if he was still alive. This is so great; absolutely amazing; so wonderful. I remember my Dad picking me up from school with it one time. When the kids asked me if I was gonna ride on that, I told them I sure am. I miss my Dad so much. We used to talk once every week. He’s with me in my heart. This is like a piece of him is coming back home.”
