Flu, pneumonia and shingles clinic Oct. 15 at Pasadena Senior Center Rite Aid will host a flu, pneumonia and shingles clinic Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St. Flu vaccinations will be offered free to people with Medicare Part B or Medical and to those with private insurance from Cigna, United Health Care and Aetna PPO. Pneumonia vaccinations will be offered free to people with Medicare Part B; coverage by other insurance will be determined after a short phone questionnaire. Coverage for shingles vaccinations will be determined after a short

phone questionnaire. Because the immune system weakens as people age, older adults are more susceptible to influenza (flu), which causes 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths nationwide each year. Advanced age can make pneumonia more dangerous. It kills more people in the U.S. annually than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined. Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the chicken pox virus in the body. The older a person is, the more severe the effects of shingles, including severe pain, burning and numbness. To sign up for flu,

pneumonia or shingles vaccinations, call the Welcome Desk at (626) 795-4331 and ask to speak with someone in the Social Services Department. You will be asked some questions over the phone to determine your share of the cost based on your individual health plan coverage. Founded in 1959, the Pasadena Senior Center is an independent, nonprofit organization that offers recreational, educational, wellness and social services to people ages 50 and over in a friendly environment. Services are also provided for frail, low-income and homebound seniors.

Plastic bag ban hurts financially depressed communities, Antonovich says Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich sharply criticized the Governor’s signing of a law banning plastic bags and imposing a $0.10 fee on all paper bags that the grocery stores will collect. “The $0.10 per bag fee will force lower income residents in impoverished communities around the state to pay for paper bags, with little indication of how the money will be spent,” said Antonovich. “This law only further hurts the California economy by jeopardizing thousands of manufacturing jobs and forcing consumers to pay additional fees to grocery stores,” he added. The Progressive Bag Alliance has vowed to collect the necessary signatures to place this issue on the ballot and let the voters decide if the State should continue with such a flawed economic proposal.

New City of Hope program will develop natural cancer-fighting therapies $2.5 million gift from Panda Charitable Foundation funds research into less-toxic treatments

Cancer treatments have improved over the years, but one potential source of treatments and cures remains largely untapped: nature. A $2.5 million gift from the Panda Charitable Foundation will help launch the Program in Natural Therapies at City of Hope, helping researchers investigate the potential of foods and other plant-based ingredients to fight disease. The gift will support the development of therapies based on natural products, encouraging researchers to combat disease through powerful compounds already present in some of the foods and herbs we now eat as part of a healthy diet. By exploring the power of nature, the Natural Therapies program will lead to treatments that help heal patients more effectively than current treatments, but with fewer harsh side effects. Already, City of Hope researchers have identified many natural compounds with cancer-fighting potential. “City of Hope’s credo is, ‘There is no profit in curing the body if in the

process we destroy the soul,’ and this new program reflects that commitment to the whole patient,” said City of Hope President and Chief Executive Robert Stone. “Our researchers and physicians understand our patients’ need for better cancer-fighting therapies with fewer side effects, and we’re grateful to the Panda Charitable Foundation for helping us develop those therapies.” The Panda Charitable Foundation gift will specifically expedite the testing of promising novel therapies from three researchers who are investigating natural products’ abilities to treat cancer. John Yim, M.D., associate professor and surgeon in City of Hope’s Division of Surgical Oncology, is studying the effects of the compound baicalein, found in thyme and the Chinese herb huang qin. The compound has been shown to shrink tumors in breast cancer and to prolong survival of breast cancer patients when used in conjunction with the chemotherapy drug cisplatin.

David Horne, Ph.D., interim director of the Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope, is researching the anti-cancer potential of a compound, known as ETP, made by fungi. Horne and his team redesigned the compound to develop an extremely potent new drug candidate. Shiuan Chen, Ph.D., professor and chair in the Department of Cancer Biology, has been exploring the potential of compounds in certain foods – blueberries and mushrooms, for example -- to fight prostate and breast cancer. Now he is researching how the foods themselves might improve outcomes for treatmentresistance breast cancer. “Panda is honored and humbled to support City of Hope’s Natural Therapies Program,” said Dr. Peggy Cherng, Co-CEO, Panda Restaurant Group. “As it directly reflects Panda’s spirit of giving, City of Hope and its programs positively impact the lives of patients and their families by being a source for renewed possibilities and hope.”

The past few months have seen a number of troubling situations develop around the world. Russia’s involvement in the Ukrainian conflict has continued, and recently airstrikes began against the Islamic state extremist group in Syria. The growing list of global concerns may add to a sense of unease for investors. Despite these issues, stock markets continued to soar to new highs through the middle of 2014 with the Dow Jones Industrial Average topping 17,000 for the first time on July 3, 20141. Is this is a sign that investors are denial about potential problems that may be brewing? Or does it tell us that investors can look past geopolitical risks and focus more on fundamental factors when investing? Dealing with distractions As history shows, there are always areas of concern at home and abroad. In fact, since the year 2000, investors have experienced: • The bursting of the technology stock price “bubble” • The tragic attacks of September 11, 2001 • Two recessions and two severe bear markets • A run-up and then massive decline in home values across much of the nation • A deep financial crisis that proved to be a major setback to the global economy • The highest unemployment rate in nearly 30 years • U.S. involvement in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq • Continued tensions in other areas of the Middle East These are among the biggest headline issues that have come into play in the past 15 years. The stock market clearly suffered through some of those periods, with bear markets occurring from 2000 to 2002 and again from late 2007 to early 2009. Yet, the markets recovered as they have throughout history. Bad news is part of the landscape Today, major events across the globe can be felt close to home in a large and diverse, yet interconnected world. Investors are wise to stay abreast of how specific issues may impact their

investment decisions. The question is whether the impact on the markets will be just a reaction to developments that is quickly overcome by other fundamental factors, or whether the event will create a secular change in the markets. The S&P 500 Financial sector index peaked at 509.55 in February 2007, and then dropped to below 100 in early 2009. As of September 2014, it is back above 300, but a long way from its peak2. The crisis clearly had a negative impact on that sector of the market that lingers to this day. At a broader level, however, the stock market has more than recovered the ground it lost from 2007 to 2009. At the end of August, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at more than 17,000, 20% higher than the peak it achieved prior to the downturn that began in 2007. It follows a long-term trend. Going back in history, the value of the stock market as measured by the Dow Jones Industrial Average has risen over time1. There have been periods of decline. But the market has historically overcome these setbacks. From World Wars to the Great Depression to the Arab Oil Embargo of the 1970s to the tragedy of 9/11, business continues and companies keep finding ways to generate profits. While today’s headlines shouldn’t be ignored, be careful not to let them be overly influential as you position your portfolio for the long run. Jean D. The percent of homes for sale in major U.S. metros with price drops has increased steadily over the past year. As of mid-2014, an average of 23.7% of all homes for sale in major markets had a price drop of $1,000 or more, up from 17.7% one year prior. This figure is even higher in Southern California markets specifically. More than a third of sellers in Orange County dropped their price in July. Los Angeles and Inland Empire sellers were not far behind, with some 25% of sellers in each metro dropping their listing price in order to get buyers in the door. Homes for sale in the

major San Gabriel Valley markets are no exception. As of mid-September, 35% of all Pasadena homes listed for sale dropped at least once in price and a staggering 40% of all Monrovia homes for sale had price drops. Not even the seemingly bullet-proof Arcadia market is immune. Of the 236 homes currently for sale in Arcadia, 76 have dropped their price – almost 32%! The majority of price drops are occurring in markets that had the most dramatic price gains during the mini-boom of 2013. Last year price appreciation in Pasadena, Arcadia and Monrovia was up 30 to 40 percent. The rate of price appreciation has slowed considerably as sell-

ers gradually realize the market is changing. This is not to say that San Gabriel Valley real estate is in a downturn. Rather, it is in the process of normalizing – a brief adjustment from the dizzying highs that actually prohibited many would-be buyers from taking the keys to their Pasadena dream-bungalow. The price drops story will likely trail off as the seasons change (as much as they do in So Cal) and sellers begin pricing their homes appropriately from the start. For now, we’ll take it as a good sign the often contentious relationship between buyers and sellers is reaching some middle ground.

Pasadena Sandwich Company 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Share-AMeal program underway By Terry Miller

Meghan and Kaytee Fink, owners of Pasadena Sandwich Company are already organizing their annual Thanksgiving Share a Meal programPhoto by Terry Miller

There are some pretty extraordinary people in just about every community in the United States. Some, however, truly stand out from the crowd. Pasadena Sandwich Company is one such shining example. Facing the tragic loss years ago of the patriarch of Pasadena Sandwich Company, the family-owned business stepped up and discovered a world previously unknown. The Pasadena Sandwich Company has been a fixture in Pasadena since 1995 as a family owned and operated business. Steve Fink learned the deli business from his parents in the 1950s before opening his own for the Pasadena lunch crowd so he could be home for family dinners. Steve was diagnosed with Amyloidosis (a rare disease that occurs when a substance called amyloid builds up in your organs) in 2009; so late in the lifespan of the disease that his treatment options were limited and he succumbed in 2010. While obviously distressed by the loss of their father, Meghan and Kaytee, along with Nicole and Jonathan, turned their sadness into hope and helped raise research dollars to combat the deadly disease. They also combined forces with actor Michael York who just happens to be battling the same disease that took the life of their father. That coalition and the Stephen E. Fink Memorial Fund’s goals to bring greater awareness, research, and treatment to Amyloidosis, have altered lives around the globe. The family continues its deep commitment to community with an annual

Thanksgiving program where they feed hundreds of needy families in the area. This year is Pasadena Sandwich Company’s 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Share a Meal where they feed Families in transition, deemed by the Pasadena Unified School District as those who could really use a warm meal. This day makes such a difference in the lives of so many people. The families who attend are touched by the generosity of the community, and all the people who help PSC put this event on and volunteer remember what this day is truly about, giving back. This year’s event is on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2014. “We are so excited to give these families a day that will not only make them smile, fill their stomachs, and bring them together in a stress-free environment, but will remind everyone that family comes first and celebrating together is what fills all of our hearts with love, “ said Meghan Fink of Pasadena Sandwich Company. They are accepting foods, goods and/or money to feed about 350 people from our Pasadena community this year. Volunteers will also be needed. Meghan, Kaytee, Nicole, and Johnathan Fink genuinely believe everyone should know about families in their communities that are underprivileged and just trying to survive. “Let’s shake the world and give back,” says the Fink Family. Pasadena Sandwich Company. Their motto says it all. “Proud to serve our Community…” 259 Sierra Madre Villa, Pasadena. Please call 626-5781616 for additional details.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid on a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of the outstanding lien that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of California Civil Code.
