Pasadena to host athletes for Special ‘Aussie Mozzie’ discovered San Gabriel Olympics World Games LA2015 in Los Angeles County priest Vector control finds Australian accused of mosquito far from home sexual abuse Two Los Angeles County vector control districts are urging residents to continue reporting daytime biting mosquitoes after discovering a new species of mosquito in Monterey Park and Montebello. During an expanded search this summer for the invasive Asian tiger mosquito, staff from the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District (SGVMVCD) and the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) collected unusual specimens from a couple of homes. After some initial research, photographs of the mosquito were sent to Dr. Cameron Webb and John Clancy with the Marie Bashir Institute of Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity at the University of Sydney, Australia and they confirmed it to be Aedes notoscriptus.
The mosquito is considered a major domestic pest in all parts of Australia, and capable of transmitting several viruses (Barmah Forest and Ross River) to people, both of which are not documented in LA County. It is uncertain if Ae. notoscriptus will become a major public health risk in California, however it is an important vector of dog heartworm in Australia, and may be cause for concern in the veterinary community and for pet owners in Los Angeles County. Dr. Webb noted, “This is one of the most widespread pest mosquitoes in Australia and, as well as being a nuisance-biting pest, has been implicated with mosquitoborne disease outbreaks in our cities.” A Bigger Threat With the increase in global travel and trade, and
BY SHEL SEGAL Questions about a priest’s past came to the surface on Sept. 10 as representatives from Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests had words with parishioners from the San Gabriel Mission regarding why a priest was removed in June, according to a published report. Representatives from that network were looking into why Fr. Bruce Wellems was relieved of his duties at the church where he had been for approximately two years. And network spokesperson Joelle Casteix wanted more information about an alleged incident of sexual abuse that happened when Wellems was younger. Glendale Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in assault case The Glendale Police Department is seeking the assistance of the public to identify 3-4 males responsible for assaulting two Glendale residents on September 13, 2014 at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Glenwood Road, Glendale. The 31 and 41 year old male victims were standing on the street corner and observed a black SUV, possibly
a BMW X5, driving northbound on Concord Street; a southbound one-way only street. The 41 year old victim yelled out to the occupants, informing them they were driving the wrong way. The SUV then reversed and the suspects exited and attacked the victims. The 41 year old victim and father of three sustained head injuries and he is cur-
rently in stable condition in ICU. The suspects are described as 3-4 males, Middle Eastern, 18-30 years old, 5’86’0, short hair and clean shaven. Anyone with information regarding the assault is encouraged to contact Glendale Police Department Detective Jason Ross at 818548-2097.
