Pasadena to host athletes for Special ‘Aussie Mozzie’ discovered San Gabriel Olympics World Games LA2015 in Los Angeles County priest Vector control finds Australian accused of mosquito far from home sexual abuse Two Los Angeles County vector control districts are urging residents to continue reporting daytime biting mosquitoes after discovering a new species of mosquito in Monterey Park and Montebello. During an expanded search this summer for the invasive Asian tiger mosquito, staff from the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District (SGVMVCD) and the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) collected unusual specimens from a couple of homes. After some initial research, photographs of the mosquito were sent to Dr. Cameron Webb and John Clancy with the Marie Bashir Institute of Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity at the University of Sydney, Australia and they confirmed it to be Aedes notoscriptus.
The mosquito is considered a major domestic pest in all parts of Australia, and capable of transmitting several viruses (Barmah Forest and Ross River) to people, both of which are not documented in LA County. It is uncertain if Ae. notoscriptus will become a major public health risk in California, however it is an important vector of dog heartworm in Australia, and may be cause for concern in the veterinary community and for pet owners in Los Angeles County. Dr. Webb noted, “This is one of the most widespread pest mosquitoes in Australia and, as well as being a nuisance-biting pest, has been implicated with mosquitoborne disease outbreaks in our cities.” A Bigger Threat With the increase in global travel and trade, and
BY SHEL SEGAL Questions about a priest’s past came to the surface on Sept. 10 as representatives from Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests had words with parishioners from the San Gabriel Mission regarding why a priest was removed in June, according to a published report. Representatives from that network were looking into why Fr. Bruce Wellems was relieved of his duties at the church where he had been for approximately two years. And network spokesperson Joelle Casteix wanted more information about an alleged incident of sexual abuse that happened when Wellems was younger. The network also held press conferences on that day in San Gabriel and Chicago, where Wellems now lives and

Union Station and MUSE/IQUE team up to help end homelessness Union Station Homeless Services and MUSE/IQUE are teaming up yet again for a genre-bending evening of entertainment for a great cause. The 15th annual An Evening for the Station benefit concert will feature a Beatles/Bash by MUSE/IQUE, the “counter conventional” orchestra. The event will be held on October 29 at 6pm, at Noor in Pasadena. “This collaboration is an opportunity to deepen MUSE/ IQUE’s civic and artistic missions,” says Rachael Worby. “Union Station makes all of our lives better. Their fierce advocacy on behalf of every soul in our city is deeply moving, and it is an honor to par-
ticipate in a fundraising effort for this extraordinary cause.” All proceeds from the 15th annual An Evening for the Station will support Union Station Homeless Services, the San Gabriel Valley’s largest and most comprehensive social service agency assisting homeless men, women and children. Maestra Rachael Worby is the visionary force behind MUSE/IQUE, a deconstructed orchestra made up of virtuoso musicians, artists, creators, and stellar guests the likes of Flea, Patti Austin, Charlie Haden, Arturo Sandoval, Angela Bassett, and many more. “When Rabbi Marv Gross asked us to explore the
brilliance of the Beatles for this celebration, we couldn’t wait to dream up fabulous surprises just for Union Station’s dearest supporters,” she says. “This year we bring the best of our Beatles deconstruction to An Evening for the Station.” These “mash-ups” are designed by Rachael Worby and they feature orchestra musicians with rock, pop, country and gospel artists. Together they will uncover the sublime genius of rock’s most revolutionary group. Event tickets are just $40, and include hors d’oeuvres. a changing local climate, both districts are deeply concerned about the continued risk of invasive species into California. “Each new introduction brings with it additional economic and public health risks,” says Kenn Fujioka, the SGVMVCD’s manager. Vector control officials are warning residents that although Ae. notoscriptus is currently not a pressing threat, the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), discovered in LA County in 2011, poses a greater risk to public health. Like Asian tiger mosquitoes, Ae. notoscriptus prefer smaller containers of water in which to lay their eggs, and they bite most aggressively in the afternoon and into the evening. Both of these characteristics are different from the more common local mosquitoes in southern California.
The Asian tiger mosquito is a potential vector of debilitating diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. While these two viruses have not been transmitted locally in Los Angeles County, the presence of this mosquito poses a threat. The SGVMVCD and GLACVCD will continue to control and monitor the Asian tiger mosquito andAe. notoscriptus. Both Districts encourage residents and businesses to call if they are getting daytime mosquito bites - indications of potentially dangerous invasive species of Aedesmosquitoes. How it was Found According to the experts in Australia, this represents the first ever identification of Ae. notoscriptusin North America. The initial Ae. notoscriptus was collected by the SGVMVCD during routine surveillance
in June but efforts to identify the battered specimen were inconclusive. In August, a request for assistance by a Montebello resident led to the discovery of a blackand-white striped mosquito by the GLACVCD. This specimen was intact and positively identified. “We applaud our residents’ role in reporting mosquito problems,” said Susanne Kluh, the GLACVCD’s Director of Scientific-Technical Services. “This type of community watch behavior benefits everyone.” During the identification process both agencies expanded surveillance and control for this new mosquito into their programs. The SGVMVCD has identified Ae. notoscriptus from three sites in Monterey Park and the GLACVCD has identified two in the city of Montebello.

born from a community need to improve quality of life for children in the Pasadena area. The result is a human-scale solution to a large-scale problem: people helping people; and health professionals sharing their time, skills and resources with children whose families would otherwise be unable to access that care. Over the past 25 years, Young and Healthy has provided health services to over 21,000 youth in the Pasadena community through the volunteer efforts of over 600 medical professionals and caring individuals serving countless hours.
“The parishioners said they were informed that Wellems was asked to resign after a record surfaced of inappropriate behavior with another minor when Wellems was 15 years old. Wellems returned to Chicago, where he previously worked with impoverished youths,” the report said. Wellems responded to his critics that he is a priest in Chicago and on sabbatical. And as he believes in the network’s mission, he is saddened by the accusations it has made against him. “I am appalled and disappointed in their poor judgment to reveal my juvenile
past, thus discrediting my good work,” Wellems said in a statement. “Worse still for me, in their quest to protect victims, I feel as if (the network), with this announcement, is victimizing the thousands of families in the parishes where I have worked. These people have made great strides to be transparent and understand what it is to be healthy faith families.” Parishioners said Wellems told them the Los Angeles Archdiocese gave him three days to leave. Summer might be just about over, but for Arcadia teenagers Sarah Wang and Kelly Chang it was one to remember. Both volunteers at the Los Angeles Zoo, Wang and Chang spent part of their summer conducting research in South Africa, thanks to the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association’s Duttenhaver Animal Conservation Field Study. This annual program gives young people who have a passion for wildlife the chance to experience field research and ecology first hand with research teams all over the world, from Thailand to the Amazon. The girls worked alongside scientists whose goal it was to conserving leopards and monkeys at the Primate and Predator Project at Lajuma Research Centre in South Africa’s Soutpansberg Mountains. The project’s research assesses the role of mountainous regions in biodiversity conservation, studies behavioral ecology of predator-prey interactions and evaluates the nature and extent of human-wildlife conflict within the Soutpansberg Mountains. Wang and Chang and five other Duttenhaver Program youngsters lived in the project’s wilderness camp and worked alongside research assistants collecting data on samango monkeys and baboons, radio-tracking collared leopards, hiking through the
beautiful terrain to check on camera traps, and analyzing vegetation to understand the behavior of several animal species. Chang, who graduated from Arcadia High School and is now attending the University of California, Irvine, said she really liked working out in the field. “My favorite experience was the more handson activity that we did,” Chang said. “We had to bait the leopard traps and we bait them out of the branches of the trees. The traps have spikes in them because they don’t want other animals to get to the bait. The bait was fetal cows. They’d be in the amnio egg and we’d cut them out. We had to cut them open because the leopards had to smell them. That was my favorite experience because I took a class my senior year in human physiology. We learned about all the organs and it was nice to put my education to work.” Wang, also an Arcadia graduate, said she really enjoyed the two weeks in South Africa. “It was amazing,” she said. “Just that we had this opportunity was really amazing to us. There were only a few of us who were selected to go. I was really excited that there were field expeditions.” (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@beaconmedianews.com and followed via Twitter @segallanded).

Safer roads for bicyclists in California thanks to mandatory 3-feet buffer zone By Jennifer Schlueter Until last week, drivers were required to keep a “safe,” but unspecified, distance to bicyclists. However, this law didn’t protect bicyclists enough, because, for example, in 2012, data from the California Highway Patrol found that “more than 150 cyclists were killed in car collisions in California”, according to the Los Angeles Times. Additionally, “in Los Angeles County, nearly 5,000 cyclists were killed or hurt in traffic that year” and the number of bicycle collisions has increased 25% since 2011. Becky Garrow from the Sacramento Bicycle Advocates Group told CBS: “According to the League of American Bicyclists, approximately 40 percent of cyclist fatalities were rear-end collisions.” To make roads a safer place for bicyclists, California legislation last Tuesday
passed a law stating that drivers now must keep a 3-feet buffer zone between them and bicyclists. If a driver does not obey this law, s/he could be confronted with a warning or a $35 fine. An accident injuring a cyclist because the buffer zone was disregarded would result in a $220 fine. Should drivers not be able to stay out of the buffer zone due to traffic conditions, they are required to drive at a “reasonable and prudent” speed, have patience, and pass the cyclists only when it is safe. The California Highway Patrol’s Southern Division reminded drivers in a news release: “Be aware that when a lane is too narrow for vehicles and bikes to be safely side by side, bicyclist should ride in or near the center of that lane to discourage motorists from unsafe passing.”

Rather than the law being “a way of penalizing drivers,” as Assemblyman and avid cyclist Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) explained, it should be viewed as an education measure for “drivers and cyclists alike about sharing the road,” the LA Times suggested. Garrow agrees: “We’re excited about this law because it gives drivers better information on how to
safely pass cyclists.” A USC student interviewed by the Annenberg TV News has his doubts about how the law will be enforced: “I’ll be curious to see how that really works in practice,” said Jake Porter. “Because some of the bike lanes are in such close proximity to the car lanes that I don’t really know if they have much room to move away.”
