State Senator Wright Sentenced in Voter Fraud, Perjury Case State Sen. Rod Wright was sentenced today to 90 days in county jail and barred from holding elective office for life after he was convicted earlier this year of living outside his Inglewood district, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy also ordered Wright, 62, to complete 1,500 hours of community service and placed him on felony probation for three years. Wright was ordered to surrender to court on Oct. 31 to begin his jail time. Deputy District Attorneys Bjorn Dodd and Michele Gilmer with the Public Integrity Division prosecuted the case. Wright, who was elected to the state senate on Nov. 4, 2008, was convicted of misleading voters in the 25th Senate district because his true residence was his Baldwin Hills home, which is in the 26th district. CDFW's Wildlife Forensics Lab Confirms Identify of Cupertino Mountain Lion The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has completed forensics testing of the mountain lion killed by wildlife officials in Cupertino on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Test results from the department’s Wildlife Forensics Lab confirmed this was the same lion that attacked a six-yearold boy on Sunday, Sept. 7. The animal also tested negative for rabies through the UC Davis California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory. DNA testing was necessary to confirm the

lion dispatched by authorities was indeed the one they sought. Mountain lion saliva samples gathered from the boy’s shirt after the attack were a perfect match to the DNA taken from the lion. The male cat was 74 pounds, about two years old and healthy. Established in the 1950s, CDFW’s Wildlife Forensics Laboratory uses forensic science procedures to examine and analyze physical evidence of wildlife attacks on humans, as well as evidence seized by wildlife officers in criminal cases.

An estimated 4,000 to 6,000 mountain lions live in California. Typically they avoid interaction with humans, and attacks like the one that occurred Sunday are very rare. CDFW’s mountain lion policy includes non-lethal and relocation options, but prioritizes public safety in the event of attacks or threats on humans. The policy can be found here. A Hidden Treasure Nestled in Our Local Mountains By Mark Peters Crystal Lake Camp Ground, San Gabriel Mountains: Nestled high above in the mountains of San Gabriel, up the road to “nowhere” highway 39, you will find a little known hidden treasure. As you make your way up the windy road to an altitude of almost 6000 feet Crystal Lake Café and Trading Post will come into view. The Café is owned and operated by Chef Adam Samrah, his wife and Baker Roula and their two sons and professional taste testers AJ and Zachary. When you walk in you are transported to the past of an actual traders post with antiques mounted on the walls, photos of long ago when Crystal Lake began its origins with the Forest Service. My son and I have been coming up to the camp ground and café for years now and were always met with a warm hospitality and left with a full belly from a great home cooked meal. The menu is traditional but prepared in a way that will leave you wanting more. The Café also serves as a supply store for hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail which passes

by a little bit over 2 miles away. Across the street from the Cafe is the Crystal Lake Campground. It is open year round with some restrictions in winter. There are no reservations, first come first serve. The Cafe offers rustic Cabin Rentals that can give the

experience of living in the wilderness. They allow 4 to 6 visitors and vary in price. For more information you can contact the Café at 626910-1029. On this trip we decided to hike to the Lake which from the Café is just over a

District Attorney's Forum Highlights Forensic Science Advancements More than 300 law enforcement investigators, criminologists and prosecutors attended a forum in Alhambra today where the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office presented some of the latest advancements in forensic science. The day-long training event included presentations by subject-matter experts on cell phone technology, blood spatter analysis and injury biomechanics. Marguerite Rizzo, Deputy-In-Charge of the Forensic Science Section, said forensic science breakthroughs are essential to catching criminals in the 21st century. “The innovations and introduction of new forensic

technologies almost on a daily basis has forensic science, once relegated to a supporting role in criminal investigations, now firmly planted in a pivotal role,” said Rizzo. Among the day’s highlights was the analysis of two criminal cases that garnered widespread public attention. Deputy District Attorney Frank Santoro gave a detailed overview of the prosecution of Robin Kyu Cho, convicted earlier this year of the 2003 murder of two women and a toddler boy. Cho was connected to the crimes through DNA evidence found on latex gloves affixed to packing tape placed over one of the victim’s face.

Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian and Forensic Anthropologist Robert Mann, Ph.D., gave a comprehensive overview of how forensic tools were used to unravel the nefarious secrets of Christian K. Gerhartsreiter, a con artist who used the alias Clark Rockefeller. Gerhartsreiter was found guilty last year of the 1985 murder of a San Marino man thanks in large part to forensic evidence that showed the German national had stabbed and beaten his victim to death. “By continuing to keep up with the latest innovations in forensic science we will continue to provide the tools used to catch the modern criminal,” Rizzo added.

drive to the parking lot which was closer to the lake so that we could spend more time there to take in the beauty of the pines and surrounding nature. The hike was short and after cresting the ridge the lake came into view. This was the first time

I have seen the lake since I was 8 years old with my grandfather. The lake was much smaller now due to the on-going drought in California and the water level has dropped nearly 20 feet. Needless to say my son Degas and his cousin Mateo had a blast by the lake side skipping rocks and looking for wildlife. Crystal Lake is the only spring fed lake in the area and is stocked with trout, blue gil, and bass, and it is a well-known destination for fishermen. On this day a storm was rolling in over the mountain tops from the high desert with visible thunderhead capping the peaks. For those that want to make the trip to Crystal Lake Café, and Trading Post and Cabin Rental is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of the Angeles National Forest at the end of Hwy 39 on N. Crystal Lake Rd. This drive is well worth the trip as you will be left with a long lasting and memorable experience. My son who is only 8 remembers this place well and loves to keep coming back. Oscar Wilde, Thoreau and Alcott attend Pasadena Central Library Façade Restoration Project Gala Sunday By terry miller Roaming the hallowed hallways of the historic Pasadena Central Library Sunday, one was whisked back in time when life was perhaps a little simpler and when reading a book didn’t require a Kindle or smart phone. Oscar Wilde, superb-

ly portrayed by Jesse Martin, wandered the library’s depth and breadth Sunday while reading from one of his books … After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, Wilde became one of London’s most popular playwrights

in the early 1890s. He is, perhaps, best remembered for his epigrams, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, his plays, and the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death. In the latter half of the 20th century he became a gay icon. Of Wilde’s many memorable quotes, the following two stood out for this special occasion on Sunday, “If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.” And: “The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.” Pasadena’s Central Library’s magnificent south façade is impressive but needs restoration, hence the reason these literary giants( which also included Louisa May Alcott and Henry David Thoreau) attended the soiree to raise funds to restore the eye-catching “face” of the building that overlooks Walnut Street and the historic civic center. Ninety years ago, ten

architectural firms competed for the privilege of designing it; the commission was awarded to the firm of Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers. Construction began in 1925, the date inscribed over the front entrance. Dedicated two years later, the library now ranks on the National Register of Historic Places. The last restoration took place between 1984 and 1990, funded in large measure by the Pasadena Public Library Foundation. Now the magnificent arched windows, stonework and exterior wall of the south façade are in critical need of restoration, repair and painting due to decades of sun exposure and general weathering. Funds raised from this event Sunday will restore the façade to its former glory thanks to the generosity of many in Pasadena. The fundraising gala highlighted the year-long celebration of 130 Years of Reading in Pasadena. The two hosts for their sponsorship of this event,

The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library and the Pasadena Public Library Foundation, true friends and supporters of the library. The Friends of the Pasadena Public Library, founded in 1975, funds the library’s programs, special ser-

vices and cultural events. Pasadena Public Library Foundation, now an endowment fund of the Pasadena Community Foundation, was established 31 years ago to refurbish and maintain the beautiful and historic Central Library building.

Arcadia Teacher of Year could shake up the teacher tenure debate

By shel segal Questions about a priest’s past came to the surface on Sept. 10 as representatives from Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests had words with parishioners from the San Gabriel Mission regarding why a priest was removed in June, according to a published report. Representatives from that network were looking into why Fr. Bruce Wellems was relieved of his duties at the church where he had been for approximately two years. And network spokesperson Joelle Casteix wanted more information about an alleged incident of sexual abuse that happened when Wellems was younger. The network also held press conferences on that day in San Gabriel and Chicago, where Wellems now lives and lived before he came to San Gabriel. Casteix said her network recently learned of two let-

ters sent by the Claretian Missionary Fathers order in Chicago to the parish here about Wellems’ departure and called the letters a “smoking gun,” the published report said. Casteix added “it doesn’t look good” from Wellems’ angle, the published report said. But several parishioners did come to the press conference and lend their voices in behalf of Wellems’ defense and his two years at the mission. “The parishioners said they were informed that Wellems was asked to resign after a record surfaced of inappropriate behavior with another minor when Wellems was 15 years old. Wellems returned to Chicago, where he previously worked with impoverished youths,” the report said. Wellems responded to his critics that he is a priest in Chicago and on sabbati-

cal. And as he believes in the network’s mission, he is saddened by the accusations it has made against him. “I am appalled and disappointed in their poor judgment to reveal my juvenile past, thus discrediting my good work,” Wellems said in a statement. “Worse still for me, in their quest to protect victims, I feel as if (the network), with this announcement, is victimizing the thousands of families in the parishes where I have worked. These people have made great strides to be transparent and understand what it is to be healthy faith families.” Parishioners said Wellems told them the Los Angeles Archdiocese gave him three days to leave. By shel segal As this year’s Teacher of the Year recipient for the Arcadia Unified School District, Patrick Tierney has an idea that would shake up the teacher tenure debate that is going on throughout the state currently. “With new teachers, I would want to make them untouchable for five years,” said Tierney, who is a longtime Spanish teacher at Arcadia High School. “Learn the craft in five years. Then we’ll make a decision. Now, some of these guys are saying just 16 months and you’ve got tenure. In March of your second year, that’s when this decision is made. I just don’t know if that’s time enough.” Tierney added the advice he gives to new teachers isn’t always what they are used to hearing. “When I talk to young teachers, I tell them, ‘Be comfortable in what you do.

Don’t be afraid to ask how do you do something,’” Tierney said Tierney grew up in Pennsylvania where his father was a newspaper man. He remembers meeting baseball star Roberto Clemente as a youth and interviewing him because his father had sent him to Mexico to learn Spanish. He attended both the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pennsylvania before coming west to California. Tierney said there is a type of magic that transpires in a classroom that doesn’t happen any other place. “Yes, you have to have subject level competency, but you have to want to be with the students,” he said. “You have to do the (mundane) work that comes with it, like grading, but there is a transaction that goes on in class every day and you

don’t know what’s going to happen.” And it is that which comes from the students that has kept him coming back all these years. “As a teacher you have to not just role with the punches, but you have to deal with that,” Tierney said. He added in order to be a good teacher you need to love learning, no matter what your age. “I can’t say that I learned about teaching in the 1970s or the 1980s,” he said. “I learn stuff all the time.” But the students that keep him coming back. “The biggest thrill that I get is when my seniors come back and tell me they decided to double-major in bio and Spanish,” Tierney said. City Ordered not to release McDade Report, as planned Continued from page 1

“The City understands and appreciates the interest of the public and the news media in accessing the Office of Independent Review’s report on the shooting of Kendrec McDade. The City continues to support both the principles of open government and our officers’ privacy rights as guaranteed by state law. We believe we had the right balance between the two and we were prepared to issue a redacted report. However, as a result of the Court’s action this morning, the City has been ordered not to disclose the report or any elements thereof at this time. It is important for the City to be able to release as much information as permissible and we look forward to a fair resolution of this issue.” This is the second attempt for Pasadena Police Officers’ Association to stop the release of the report, saying the contents include personnel information and releasing it would violate the police officers’ rights. The City of Pasadena late Thursday announced that it will release next Thursday (today) the Office of Independent Review (“OIR”) Report on its police department shooting of the unarmed Kendrec McDade. The City qualified its notice to requesters of the OIR Report “unless there is a court order directing us otherwise.” Which, of course, is exactly what happened. Attorney Elbie J. Hickambottom, counsel for McDade’s mother Anya

Slaughter, the Pasadena NAACP, the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, ACT, and ACLU activist Kris Ockershauser, responded to the City’s notice with cautious optimism, saying “We’ve succeeded in moving the City forward in two ways. First, the city is no longer hiding behind the Pasadena Police Officers Association (“PPOA”) skirts and its collusive lawsuit with the PPOA to avoid deciding on release of the OIR Report. Second, the City has gone from City Manager Beck’s unacceptable position a month ago that it would release only the OIR Report recommendations but not the rest of the report; now the City says it will release all of the report except for its redacting information that is legally protected against disclosure. We are concerned that the City may over-redact the report in order to protect itself against damaging information, and we intend to take steps to make sure that does not happen.” Hickambottom added that “we agree that disclosure of the contents of police officer personnel records cannot and should not be disclosed, but only if that information has not already been put into the public record. But, for instance, there is a great deal of deposition testimony by Officers Newlen and Griffin in the federal court wrongful death case against them by McDade’s mother that

is now public information. You cannot put that horse back in the barn. If the information is out in the public domain, it cannot be redacted from the OIR Report. An attorney representing the Los Angeles Times along with McDade’s mother, Anya Slaughter , Pasadena chapter of the NAACP, a community activist and local ACLU board member Kris Ockershauser, ACT and Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Greater Pasadena have all filed objections Tuesday to the union’s renewed attempt to now seal the report. James Chalfant, already granted the temporary restraining order earlier this month, but later withdrew it to oblige the city of Pasadena to make a decision on what portions of the report it actually intended to release. Last Thursday, Pasadena issued a statement saying they would release a redacted version of the report today. Chalfant will hear a permanent seal request next month. The city has already agreed to a $1 million settlement in two separate lawsuits filed by McDade’s parents for civil rights violations and wrongful death. In the 2009 officer involved shooting of Leroy Barnes, the city also contracted with OIRG and under Chief Bernard Melichian’s watch, released that entire report to the public and press.
