And as the year-long quest to seek “Justice For Indy” continues, so does the need for people to take action in the fight against animal cruelty, whether it be by writing letters to legislators or by joining the hundreds of people from all over the -Photo by Lauren Lewis

As We Say Goodbye to Summer, Don't Miss Boyhood Before It Too Is Gone By MIKE GONZALEZ After a summer season of superheroes, digital autobots, action extravaganzas, and raunchy comedies, Richard Linklater’s Boyhoodreminds us that regular people and the relationships they forge is still a worthy subject for film. The self-taught director whose most notable films take place within 24 hours here displays a honed mastery of intricate storytelling, the culmination of an almost three decade long career in writing, producing, and directing most of his films. Boyhood is a sprawling tale of a Texas family and their struggle to maintain the ties that bind them. The story unfolds entirely from the point of view of six-year old Mason, played by newcomer Ellar Coltrane in a star-making performance, and covers twelve years from Mason’s elementary school days to his first day of college. Most fascinating is the fact that principle photography was shot over the same amount of time as represented in the film, with the same actors. This
gives the film a level of authenticity and intimacy between the characters and the audience as I don’t think has ever quite been experienced before. Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke both deliver excellent performances as Olivia and Mason Sr., divorced parents to Mason Jr. and his big sister Samantha, played more than competently by Lorelei Linklater, real-life daughter of the film’s director. After a fight with her boyfriend, Olivia decides to uproot the family to Houston so she can attend university and eventually improve their financial situation. It’s a decision that embarks Mason Jr. on an Odyssean journey through two step-fathers, step-siblings, new schools, new friends, girls, drugs, sex, and, most importantly, self-discovery. Mason Sr., meanwhile, tries desperately to maintain a close bond with Mason Jr. and his sister through the years while going through his own journey from downon-his-luck musician to new
husband and father. What underlies the family’s trials and tribulations is their undying love for one another and that’s what makes the film so enjoyable to watch. Linklater moves the plot at such a pace that we are able to ingratiate ourselves with every member of the family, but especially with Mason Jr. We root for him and want him to be okay. Sandra Adair, who edited Boyhood and has worked on many of Linklater’s films, elegantly accomplished what was no doubt a monumental task, given the film’s chronological leaps and huge ensemble cast. The film is a seamless tapestry of scenes that jump ahead in time and in which characters enter, exit and reappear at different ages. I only wonder what led to the decision to make this film a summer rather than a fall release, given the filmmaking and performances worthy of golden statuette nominations. Maybe if enough of us see it, it will stay in the Academy’s memory.

Southland who will once again gather at the Van Nuys West Courthouse, located at 14400 Erwin Street Mall, on the morning of September 24 beginning at 8:00am. “Indy’s story is one of many tragic cases of animal cruelty and abuse that has been dominating the news of late...Imagine how many cases aren’t reported,” said Roger Allen Ward of Pasadena. “Fortunately Indy survived where sadly many don’t. We must continue to advocate for animal rights, stricter legislation and increased awareness. Animal abuse is unacceptable under any circumstances and violators should have significant consequences. We must be the voice that inspires change.” “Whether these crimes are committed against a human being or an animal - they are inexcusable,” added Katrina Nelson of Studio City. “At the very least, the laws in this regard are inadequate and at a minimum, if this man is found guilty, he deserves the maximum penalty that is legally allowed at this time. And maybe one day, the maximum penalty will actually be deserving of such horrible acts of cruelty.” “I attend Indy’s hearings because I feel strongly
that the LA County justice system needs to fully prosecute animal abuse cases. I want my voice heard. If we don’t speak for the animals being abused at the hands of humans who will?” shared Nicole Goodfellow of Burbank. “We cannot allow the abusers to walk away with a slap on the wrist. They must be held accountable and deal with the consequences of their actions.” The outpouring of support is not limited to those in California. People from all over the world are fighting for Justice For Indy. “Indy’s story has touched the hearts of many, even overseas,” said Laura Jones, an animal advocate based in London, UK who is heavily involved in the Justice For Indy campaign. “I wish I could have shown support for Indy by being at his hearings in person, however, I was able to send letters to the DA and Judge for Indy’s case and I would encourage others to so the same and be the voice of animals like Indy who have suffered senseless abuse”. Indy, who was brought to Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team (S.T.A.R.T.) and then transferred to Westlake Village Animal Hospital, was in dire condition with life-threatening burns over the majority of
his body. Numerous surgeries, including some performed by renowned burn surgeon Dr. Richard Grossman, and months of painful recovery and therapy later, Indy is slowly healing in his “fur-ever” home his new mom, Jenny Mandel, a vet tech from the clinic where he was treated. But the fight for Justice continues... Join The “Justice For Indy” Supporters From All Over The Southland As They Gather Once Again At Van Nuys Courthouse Wednesday September 24, 2014 At 8:00am In addition to attending the September 24 peaceful demonstration, people are encouraged to send letters and emails to the Judge and DA in Indy’s case. Court Judge Douglas Sortino also ordered Martinez to pay restitution in the amount of $5,000 to the victim’s compensation board and $2,800 to the victim’s family. Deputy District Attorney Sandra Jimenez, who prosecuted that case, said on April 7, 2013, Martinez, who was 20 years old at the time, was drinking alcohol at a party in Pomona when an altercation ensued. The defendant decided to leave the gathering.
Martinez got into the driver seat, while four others were passengers in the car, the prosecutor said. During the drive, Martinez began to fight with the front passenger because she believed the person was involved in the fight at the party. At that point, Martinez took her hands off the steering wheel and began hitting the front passenger, the prosecutor said. The car lost control, hit a curb and two other cars, and then flipped over.
The back passenger, Sarena Vargas, 19, was ejected from the car and died at the scene, the prosecutor said. The three other passengers suffered either fractures or bruising. NEWSRELEASE After the crash, Martinez was hospitalized for her injuries. She was later arrested and charged in connection with the crime. The case was investigated by the Pomona Police Department.

San Gabriel Mountains proposed for Monument Status
Continued from page 1
area compatible with the proper care and management of the objects to be protected.” The Act was designed to protect federal lands and resources quickly that were in danger of being destroyed or compromised, but in this instance concerns about adequate public notification of the proposal and a public hearing process have become paramount. Chu said she approached President Obama about designating the federal lands in the San Gabriel Mountains as a monument and he seemed open to the idea. Thomas Contreras, Forest Supervisor, Angeles National Forest, provided opening remarks, introduction of panel members and special guests including representatives of County Supervisor Gloria Molina, Rep. Grace Napolitano, Rep. Adam Schiff and Senator Barbara Boxer. Not on the list, but in attendance, was Glendora Mayor Judy Nelson, Monrovia Mayor Pro Tem, Becky Shevlin, Mayor Pro Tem Rosemead, Margaret Clark, and State Senator Bob Huff’s representative, Tim Shaw, also member of La Habra City Council. Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry advertised the meeting as a public discussion to “explore opportunities for enhancing access, recreational use and protection of scenic, cultural and historic areas of interest.” The panel of 10 representing youth groups, land management, preservation specialists and elected officials responded to one question each from Panel Facilitator, Oscar Gonzales, California State Executive Director, Farm Service Agency. No time reserved for public comment or questions. Janice Rutherford, Supervisor, San Bernardino County, sat on the panel and when asked her thoughts on the proposal said it has been only days since we found out we will be included in this plan, a plan that has been in the works for
a decade. She said San Bernardino County is trying to understand the governing structure, the minerals report and how it will affect the business community and county residents. She added she doesn’t understand the rush to get this pushed through the hearing and approval process. She would like time to study this and to have hearings in Rancho Cucamonga and Wrightwood to hear her constituents’ opinions. There have been two studies on the San Gabriel Mountains initiated about 10 years ago that many of us found approximately a year ago with no announced public hearings on either one for citizen comments. • San Gabriel Watershed & Mountains Special Resource Study 2003, put out by Department of Interior, Division of Park Service. This proposed the San Gabriel Mountains from Santa Clarita eventually out beyond the Rancho Cucamonga Wilderness area to Wrightwood would become part of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and under the supervision of the Department of Interior, Park Services, if it met the following criteria: nationally significant natural or cultural resources, suitable and feasible addition to the Park System, and need for Park Service management. • Technical Guide to Managing Ground Water Resources 2007, put out by Department of Agriculture, Division of Forestry referred to as 2543, states the purpose is to provide guidance for implementing the Forest Service national ground water policy and use of ground water resources on NFS lands with a goal “to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.” As a result of those studies Rep. Chu created the National Recreation Area (NRA) legislation, HR 4858, establishing the structure for creating
a management plan of the forest area and recreation areas. A 21-member committee, headed up by Department of Interior and Department of Agriculture would have 3 years to create a management plan for the San Gabriel Mountains. Those serving on that committee would be appointed and not directly elected by the people they would be representing. That legislation has not moved quickly through the Natural Resources Committee so creating monument status became more expeditious. L.A. County Supervisor Elect, Hilda Solis said what is being proposed allows inner city youth to experience this natural resource and increased recreation. Solis was asked what enhancements she envisioned for the area and what added recreational opportunities. Solis said she started looking at this with the Rivers & Mountains Conservancy in 1999. “This isn’t about the long arm of government but negotiation and establishing better relations with city councils and water agencies”. Denis Bertone, Council Member, San Dimas, said local governments have to be involved in these decisions. As a member of the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG) he chaired the Environment Committee and oversaw the COG White Paper setting conditions for the approval and support of the NRA legislation. Those conditions have not been met and are not incorporated in HR 4858 including a water audit, definitive boundaries of the NRA, cities abilities to opt out of the area, and specific activities and private holdings that will not be impacted. Bertone said the COG supported the NRA legislation, but not all city councils have taken a support position and only 17 members of the COG out of 31 city members have supported Chu’s NRA. Bertone also cited, as did the COG in their reports, former Congressman David Dreier’s sup-
port for this proposal in HR 113 in 2011. Dreier’s legislation, dedicated to the lost lives in the Station Fire, specifically proposed expansion of unmaintained wilderness areas by Forestry due to lack of funding causing increased fire potential but also documented current activities and private holdings would not be affected. He called for immediate adequate funding. Chu’s legislation does not. Forestry has said their budget has been cut the last three years in a row while they have been restoring trails and reforesting burned areas due to the Station Fire. They are hoping monument status will give them more funding. Antiquities Act raises provides: • National monument status on land with multiple uses could face restricted use. • Broad rights to protect monument resources at the time of creation can include obtaining water rights • It applies to lands owned or controlled by the federal government. Also states if objects to be preserved are on privately owned lands, the property “may be relinquished to the Government” and not clear whether that is voluntary or may include condemnation. • Under President Clinton, using motorized and mechanized vehicles off-road is prohibited and under many new monument designations that may continue. Maintenance of existing facilities is a concern • Monument designation can limit or prohibit land uses, such as development [of needed infrastructure] or recreational uses National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires federal agencies to provide an environmental impact statement (EIS) reviewed by EPA to ensure adequate review and assessment of environmental impacts. No clear requirement for areas given monument status.
Vergara v. California ruling; state officials appeal Judge Treu’s final ruling on tenure in California schools
-Photo and Story by Terry Miller
Last week, California Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown appealed a recent state judge’s ruling that ends tenure and other union protections for public school teachers. The appeal, filed Friday, contends that Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rulf Treu’s final decree lacks detail and fails to provide the legal basis for his verdict. Treu issued the final ruling Thursday, after directing in June that tenure protections for California teachers violate the state constitution, depriving some of the state’s 6.2 million students of a quality education, specifically minorities and those from lowincome families. The lawsuit, Vergara v. California, was brought by Beatriz Vergara and eight other students claimed incompetent teachers let classrooms get out of control, came to school unprepared and demeaned and humiliated students. State Superintendent of schools Tom Torlakson issued a press release last week on Vergara Lawsuit and said… “No teacher is perfect. A very few are not worthy of the job” He added, “The people who dedicate their lives to the teaching profession deserve our admiration and support. Instead, this ruling lays the failings of our education system at their feet. “We do not fault doctors
when the emergency room is full. We do not criticize the firefighter whose supply of water runs dry. Yet while we crowd our classrooms and fail to properly equip them with adequate resources, those who filed and support this case shamelessly seek to blame teachers who step forward every day to make a difference for our children. “No teacher is perfect. A very few are not worthy of the job. School districts have always had the power to dismiss those who do not measure up, and this year I helped pass a new law that streamlined the dismissal process, while protecting the rights of both teachers and students. It is disappointing that the Court refused to even consider this important reform. “In a cruel irony, this final ruling comes as many California teachers spend countless unpaid hours preparing to start the new school year in hopes of better serving the very students this case purportedly seeks to help. “While the statutes in this case are not under my jurisdiction as state Superintendent, it is clear that the Court’s ruling is not supported by the facts or the law. Its vagueness provides no guidance about how the Legislature could successfully alter the challenged statutes to satisfy the Court. Special thanks are extended to this year’s Celebrating Children major corporate sponsors, including: The Morrison & Foerster Foundation; Southern California Gas Company; the Capital Group; KCB Management; Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, LLP; Pelican Hill; and Wells Fargo. The centerpiece of Celebrating Children is the presentation of the HathawaySycamores’ Celebrating Children Award. Each year, the event honors an individual or family that exemplifies the values of integrity, leadership and commitment to the well-being of children, adults, families, and communities. The 2014 Celebrating Children honorees are Annsley and George Strong, longtime residents of La Cañada Flintridge and longtime supporters of Hathaway-Sycamores. Annsley Strong’s roots with
Hathaway-Sycamores run particularly deep. Specifically, Strong was first introduced to the agency when she was a member of the Los Altos Auxiliary, which raises funds for the children and teens who are in residential treatment at HathawaySycamores’ El Nido campus in Altadena. The Los Altos Auxiliary thus served as a bridge to Hathaway-Sycamores, and Annsley Strong, along with her husband George Strong, Jr., has been actively involved ever since. She served on the agency’s Board of Directors for 13 years and held the position of Board Chair from 2006 to 2008. Annsley Strong currently serves on HathawaySycamores’ Advisory Board and is a member of the agency’s Strategic Planning Committee. Police warn of ‘Grandparents Scam’ In the typical scenario, a grandparent receives a phone call from a scammer claiming to be one of his or her grandchildren. Callers go on to say that they are in some kind of trouble and need money immediately. They claim to have been in a car accident, are having trouble returning from a foreign country or they need bail money. The grandparent may get a call from two people, one pretending to be their grandchild and the other pretending to be either a police officer or a lawyer. They will ask questions
prompting for personal information. The grandparent will then be asked to wire money through a money transfer company or to buy some pre-paid debit cards and are asked to give up the card numbers so they can be funded by the scammer. Often, victims don’t verify the story until after the money has been sent. In some cases, scammers pretend to be your old neighbor or a friend of the family. Generally, the emergency scam is directed at the elderly in our community. If you or someone you
know is being scammed please have them contact the Pasadena Police Department, Financial Crime Unit at 626-744-4576. If the money has not yet been wired or funded, cease all communications with the scammers and do not send the money, then contact the police. Contact: The Financial Crime Unit at (626) 7444576 for further information or contact the Federal Trade Commission at: http://www. consumer.ftc.gov/scamalerts

Judy Chu’s Land Grab attempt buses people to event, resident says Dear Editor: This past Tuesday I attended the Congresswoman Judy Chu’s forum regarding her request to the President to designation the San Gabriel Mountains as a National Monument. For those who don’t know about Judy Chu’s quest to control the San Gabriel Mountains let me give you a quick synopsis. For the past two years she has been holding forums and town halls across the Foothill Corridor from Santa Clarita to San Bernardino to talk about her vision for a National Recreation Area. Last June she presented her legislation HR 4858 to Congress’s Commission for Natural Resources. Two weeks ago, unhappy with the lack of progress with her bill in Congress, she asked President Obama to bypass Congress and designate the San Gabriel Mountains as a National Monument under the Antiquities Act of 1906. Within one week of making her announcement she held a hastily called public forum in Baldwin Park with high ranking public and government officials in attendance. Under a monument designation this will be the largest land grab by the Federal Government at over 700,000
acres. When combined with the proposed Rim of the Valley and the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy they will control the entire Southern California mountain range from the beach to the San Bernardino’s, Los Angeles River, Rio Hondo River and eventually connecting to the Los Padres and Cleveland National Forests. The Government will have complete oversight without any local control or input regarding water, timber and minerals. I arrived early to the forum as it has been my experience that Rep. Chu likes to bus people in to fill the seats to make the room look as though there is overwhelming support for her legislation. What I witnessed was far worse than I could image. This first bus arrived about a half hour after I did, then another and another and another. The people who came off those buses were all wearing shirt and badges supporting the Save the Mountains Forever group. There was only one problem, they didn’t speak or read in any English. Several people we spoke with throughout the groups were told that they were going on a field trip to help save the mountains; they would all get a shirt
and get to see Michelle Obama. When I asked an organizer about the people that were bused in and where they came from I was told I was racist and bigoted. I later spoke with the daughter of a woman who was upset that Michelle Obama was never going to be there and they were merely being used as seat fillers. Hundreds of people who lived in the area, had an interest in the proposal and city officials were locked out so that Judy Chu could fill the seats with people who didn’t understand a word that was being said.... I call that EXPLOITATION. Congresswoman Judy Chu doesn’t have the best interests of the people she claims to represent. By going to the President and bypassing Congress she will no longer have to honor all the safeguards that were put in place under HR 4858. They can appoint anyone they want to oversee the management of the new National Monument. What do you want to bet that person is Joe Edmiston of the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy, the very man the cities and COG fought to keep out of any management role of the San Gabriels? Art Alas Blasts Covina City Council for Spying On Residents’ Homes and businesses “It is wrong for the city of Covina to spy on its own residents, shoppers and business people. It has been shown consistently that surveillance cameras do not improve public safety or prevent crime. At best, cameras help to investigate and prosecute crimes after the fact. At worse, they are a serious breach of our rights and civil liberties.” “The City Council of Covina was wrong to implement this surveillance and spend more than $300,000 of our money without prior notice to the people of Covina and without any public debate or comment.
Residents and businesses owners have never been told what the capabilities of the systems actually are and how they will be used. The people of Covina should make the ultimate decision about whether or not their money is used to increase government surveillance of their own neighborhoods and businesses” Alas continued, “I believe all Americans, and especially those in my district, have a constitutional right to privacy, which must be respected by law enforcement agencies and government. Once our rights are lost, it is very difficult to get them back.”
Arturo Alas is a grassroots leader and local businessman. A San Gabriel Valley native, Alas played professional soccer for several international teams before returning to Southern California and starting a successful real estate business. Alas believes that the Federal government has become too large, too powerful, and too expensive. A strong believer in individual rights, Alas believes we must get back to a Constitutional government and restore the free market principles that have made our nation great and our people prosperous.
