Two South Pasadena High students charged as juveniles in plot to kill "as many people as possible..." BY TERRY MILLER At a press conference at South Pasadena Police station Tuesday morning media outlets from around the world were told of the arrest of two teenage boys who were plotting a ‘massacre’ at South Pasadena High School. The two young men allegedly exchanged detailed plans via social media and verified their intentions in police interviews, according to South Pasadena Chief of Police, Arthur Miller. The two teenage boys were charged as juveniles Wednesday for plotting to kill three teachers and “as many people as possible.” Their names will not be released, according to the District Attorney. “It was very viable, what they were plotting. They were making a huge plan of a school massacre that identified three staff members at the school by name that they were targeting,” as well as “random” students, Miller said. Please see page 4

County of Los Angeles Public Library to restore its service hours The County of Los Angeles Public Library will restore its service hours at libraries that had hours reduced in 2009 – 2010, effective Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Libraries have evolved into community centers that provide invaluable tools to their patrons. Individuals are visiting libraries to search for jobs, homework help, computer literacy classes, online learning tools, early childhood literacy programs, teen services, and other programs. The restoration in hours will grant the Library staff an opportunity to provide additional programs and services to their patrons. The restoration of library service hours, at libraries located in cities

throughout Los Angeles County, is made possible by the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors approval to increase the Library budget by $3.6 million to restore library hours as they were in 2009-10. “We are thrilled that the Board of Supervisors approved the budget for the restoration of County Library service hours,” said County Librarian Margaret Donnellan Todd. “Our libraries provide an essential gathering place for our patrons, and having restored hours allows our librarians the opportunity to provide a place for learning, collaboration and community.” The new services hours for Norwood Library will be: Monday: 10am – 8pm

ter for everyday activities than they do for the ALS ice bucket challenge. The most obvious example: you use as much water in one minute in the shower as you would use for one bucket of ice water. (The average showerhead uses about five gallons per minute, while the average bucket holds the same amount.) And most people take showers every day, for often quite a bit longer than one minute.” With California authorities issuing fines for unlawful outdoor water use such as hosing down asphalts and watering on certain weekdays, it is interesting to note that, according to a 2012 Pacific Institute report, households only use about 4 percent of California’s water, whereas agriculture takes up 93 percent. Cows drink 23 gallons of water, and automatic flushing systems for them can use up to 150 gallons a day. The One Green Planet article which compiled this data therefore suggests replacing animal products with a plant-based diet to save water. Whether you choose to engage in the Ice Bucket Challenge or not, please keep in mind that it intends to promote donations to charities, and not a trend.

Asian American Civil Rights Organization calls for investigation into recent shooting by LAPD Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles (Advancing Justice LA) expresses sadness and outrage at the fatal shooting of Ezell Ford, an unarmed African American man with a history of mental illness, at the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), and demands a full and transparent investigation of Ford’s death. Ford’s death comes tragically on the heels of a number of other fatal shootings of African American men by law enforcement officials around the nation, including that of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The killings of Ford and Brown by law enforcement expose the systemic and entrenched nature of racial profiling and racial discrimination that African Americans have long endured and fought against in the struggle for civil and human rights. As Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, our communities also have experienced police brutality and discrimination by law enforcement. We have too

many stories of our own youth and other community members being shot or beaten by law enforcement, including a 2012 case where a young, limitedEnglish speaking Asian immigrant with mental illness was shot dead by the Los Angeles County Sheriff in a San Gabriel Valley mental health clinic. Advancing Justice - LA joins the African American community and other civil rights and social justice groups in demanding justice for Ezell Ford, including a full and transparent investigation and an examination of mental health intervention policies by the LAPD. We also urge all Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders to stand in solidarity with Ezell Ford, Michael Brown, and other African American victims of police brutality, because we recognize that our struggles are inextricably tied to those of other communities who face systemic racism or oppression. Together we can achieve justice for all of our communities.

Local photographer supports “Family Portrait Month” promotion that aids orphans in the developing world During September, Nicola Borland Photography will join with fellow members of Professional Photographers of America (PPA) throughout the country in supporting “Family Portrait Month.” Sponsored by PPA Charities (the philanthropic arm of PPA), this national fundraising effort will benefit Dando Amor, a non-profit charity, founded by photographers and dedicated to improving the lives of orphans living in deplorable conditions in the developing world. Nicola Borland Photography has pledged to offer clients a 50% discount on their session fee when booked in September, and will then contribute 100% of the proceeds to PPA Charities, which has chosen Dando Amor as its charitable partner for this fund-raising event. According to Florida photographer Susan Michal, President of PPA, “September is an ideal time for families to have their portraits created, because the holiday season is just around the corner. Police learned initially of the plot by a concerned citizen who alerted South Pasadena police of the threat last Thursday. “They just wanted to kill as many people as possible,” he said. No weapons were found when the students were arrested, but the pair believed they had access to a firearm belonging to

a relative, Miller said. The young men, who are now in juvenile hall under arrest, discussed using automatic weapons, knives, bombs and wearing bulletproof vests, according to Chief Miller. The students, ages 16 and 17, are being held on suspicion of conspiracy and criminal threats but will likely face additional

charges. The police apparently conducted ‘Internet surveillance’ on the two suspects, who used social media. The FBI offered to help police and has been aiding the investigation, Miller said. Additional police presence is planned for the first day of school, Thursday.

The organization provides volunteers who raise funds for the charity to experience “a different kind of vacation,” so they can be personally involved in helping orphans live better and fuller lives. Volunteers have taken part in hands-on ac-

Torlakson announced today. “As students and teachers head back to school they will be experiencing exciting changes in California education, including a new way of teaching and learning through the Common Core,” Torlakson said. “Now educators have additional help in dispelling the mystery and concerns of families about this transition with a new communications toolkit created with the help of several major education groups in the state.” “Explaining Common Core to Californians: A Communications Toolkit” is an online resource created with the help of the California Department of Education, State Board of Education, Californians Dedicated to Education, California County Superintendents Educational Services Association, California State PTA®, California School Boards Association, California Teachers Association, California Federation of Teaches AFT/ AFL-CIO, Association of California School Administrators, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, and the nonprofit

FrameWorks. The resource is a collection of research, recommendations, and sample communications designed to help educators increase their own and the public’s understanding of the kinds of instruction, testing, and support needed to fulfill the potential of the Common Core. For example, educators can download printable message cards that provide metaphors to help them explain Common Core, talking points to help them describe what Common Core does, frequently asked questions on challenging topics, tips on how to use social media, sample letters to parents, and a Common Core video. Californians Dedicated to Education also will hold a series of Webinars to provide an overview of the Communications Toolkit and practical tips on how to use it with a special focus on back-to-school messaging. The State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards for English language arts and mathematics in 2010. Standards define the knowledge, concepts, and skills students should acquire at each grade level. The new standards provide a practical way to prepare students for the challenges of a constantly changing world by helping them learn step-by-step the real world skills they need for college and careers. The Common Core provides all students, no matter where they live or where they were born, a worldclass education that’s consistent from school to school so they will graduate ready to contribute to the state and nation. It also replaces the state’s outdated ways of learning with a clear focus on the key knowledge and skills students need while providing teachers the time to teach the standards well.

Seller reserves all services By Hugo Torres I live to negotiate and swell with pride when I can help my client achieve reasonable terms in either the sale or purchase of a home. The rush of giving counsel, planning a pricing strategy, mediating terms and finding creative solutions is what first attracted me to the Real Estate industry and why I continue to enjoy it. Sadly, the extreme swings in the market and the lack of good mentoring/training has chipped away at this cornerstone of the profession and created a new generation of agents ill prepared to pursue their client’s needs to the utmost. These conditions in turn have allowed heavy handed tactics that in the long run will hurt the industry in the eyes of future Real Estate customers. There is a small party of individuals and companies that take part in a Real Estate transaction and can help ensure that things go smoothly. On any given deal the REALTORS must deal with loan officers, Title Policy reps, Escrow Officers, Home Warranty Agents, Termite inspectors, and/or Natural Hazard Disclosure companies. Every single one of these parties must perform tasks or promise to provide services during escrow or who will make considerable promises in the years after the deal

closes. Not all services and vendors are created equal and an expert agent should advise their client the virtue of using companies and reps who have the best track records. These services, like the terms of price and duration of the escrow period, have always been negotiable between sellers and buyers via their agents. Historically, agents have talked to their clients about the virtue of choosing one company over another and the the parties negotiate until a meeting of the minds arises. This fair practice began to erode in the last real estate boom as service companies began to incentivize brokers and agents for their patronage. With my own eyes I witnessed the lavishness of these times and the myriad of agents who gladly took advantage. During this time, agents pushed certain products heavily because they received large rewards for doing so. A lot of this dried up as of 2008 with the collapse of the Real Estate market and intense scrutiny by insurance commissioners and the Federal government. Nonetheless, the practice had become part of the DNA of those REALTORS and every year thereafter the phrase “Seller Reserves All Services” started to be-

come more prominent in Multiple Listing Service (MLS) postings in an area that is not available for the eyes of Real Estate customers. Fast forward to present day when the phrase has become a standard and many new agents have come to understand that we now live in a time when they could negotiate price and length of escrow but there is no point in negotiating further. The seller (by way of their agents) has mandated who will service during the sale and who’ll take care of the client after its done. This is a shame. REALTORS have always been and continue to be negotiators. Intelligently advocating on their clients behalf and finding answers that gives everyone the most of what they want. This brings value and I’m certain that our customers will reward us in turn when they see that we helped make their investment all the better. Not challenging a simple line in the MLS is foolhardy and it doesn’t help our clients achieve a better bottom line. Let’s all be the best professionals we can be. Curve the language andlet’s start making some deals happen. Hugo Torres can be found on line at hugotorres.com or on Facebook at facebook.com/monrovian21.

State lawmakers approve Holden bill to protect California parklands Assemblymember Chris Holden’s (D-Pasadena) bill to protect parks and wild spaces by increasing fines for dumping and vandalism in Southern California’s nature areas has been approved by the state Legislature. AB 1767 raises the fines for dumping, vandalism or destroying property on Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy properties to $1,500. Because state bonds used to fund much of the SMMC cannot be used for maintenance, the increased fine revenue will help the Conservancy offset its current deficit and repairs. “If you’ve ever hiked through the Monrovia Wilderness Preserve or walked through the San Rafael Hills or even Griffith Park, then you know the im-

portant work of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy,” said Assemblymember Holden. “I want to thank my fellow legislators for recognizing the importance of preserving our open spaces for our children and grandchildren. This legislation will help preserve the beauty and rich heritage of land in the Santa Monica Mountains for generations to come.” In recent years, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy has faced thousands of dollars in deficits resulting

from the unreimbursed repair and maintenance costs stemming from damage caused to Conservancy land. Some 69,000 acres make up the Conservancy stretching from the Pacific Ocean through the Santa Monica Mountains and extending east to include parts of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Verdugo Hills and the San Rafael Hills in Pasadena. AB 1767 passed out of Assembly concurrence today on a vote of 55 to 18. It now goes to the Governor for signature.

The Social Whirl Local girls become young scientists and tech “experts” at Tech Trek Camp In one short week, eleven middle-school girls from San Gabriel Valley school districts became more science and tech savvy. They spent June 15-21 on the Whittier College campus at Tech Trek Science/Math Camp for Girls exploring courses and possible futures in STEM Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The goal of Tech Trek Camp is to help young women entering eighth grade in the fall to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in the fields of math and science------in hope that they will continue to take more classes in those fields and o on to related careers. Representing Arcadia were Nancy Cho and Carrie Saleeb. El Monte City School District was represented by Joycelyn Reyes, Mariana Perez, Alena Perez, Veronica Castro, Jessica Liu and Malinelly Romero. Monrovia sent Mariah Robles and Tem-

ple City sent Faith Gutierrez. These young women received a preview of college life while learning that math and science can be enjoyable. They lived in dorms on the Whittier College campus for the week and attended classes that emphasized handson experiments and were taught by credentialed middle-school teachers. Some of the core classes were Robotics and Mars City Alpha (about Mars’ environment). Field trips included outings to the Long Beach Marine Institute and Griffith Park Observatory. The week was topped off by a “Build-It Festival” in which the girls used common materials to construct their projects. All enjoyed a Professional Woman’s Panel in which the girls were inspired by stories of the women’s various paths into STEM careers. Students are nominated by teachers to attend Tech Trek Camp. The

local branch of AAUW provides the funding for the students to attend and makes the final selection of campers. AAUW-Arcadia Branch members are supporting this endeavor, along with contributions from community donors.
