Litter index survey shows improvement in city cleanliness Each year, the Litter Index Survey scores 24 areas throughout the city including freeways, industrial, residential, and commercial neighborhoods. The 2014 average citywide score improved from 1.52 in 2013 to 1.45 this year. The improvements indicate that programs implemented to increase awareness and civic participation in Glendale are effective in reducing litter. By participating in the City’s various community clean-up projects, such as the “Adopt-A-Block” campaign, volunteer citizens have played a critical role in reducing litter on city streets. The result of over 5,800 hours of dedication from these volunteers has been cleaner, safer neighborhoods in the city of Glendale. For more information about the Litter Index Survey or to volunteer for the 2015 survey, please contact Sandra Rodriguez at (818) 937-8333.

Taiwan’s economic partnership with California strong and vital, says Ambassador Bruce J.D. Linghu BY TERRY MILLER During a special event Tuesday evening, organized by the Task Force of the City Club International and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, hundreds of guests enjoyed an evening of global communication, camaraderie and commerce based on Taiwan’s ROC strong business ties to the United States. Ambassador Bruce J.D. Linghu, Director General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office gave a dazzling keynote address punctuated by a well-produced power-point presentation indicating Taiwan’s goals and accomplishments, with particular regard to commerce with not only California and the entire United States but with Mainland China. In political fairness, the Ambassador spoke highly of President Clinton and Obama ( noting that, like our current President, Taiwan’s President Ma Yingjeou also graduated from Harvard Law School in 1981 .) He also shared images of him with the popular Republication President Ronald Reagan during the keynote address. After the Ambassador spoke, guests were

CASA of Los Angeles needs you KATHERINE HILL Bean Town is a well known popular and familiar gathering place for coffee - as well as conversation. It is said that there are no strangers there. Therefore, it was no surprise last week when a woman I didn’t know asked me what a CASA was. I suppose I looked puzzled, but she pointed to my CASA badge. Always happy to explain what I do, we sat down and I answered her questions. Later she suggested that more people in Sierra Madre would be interested in our program. I explained that CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate - that I am one of 500 volunteers who represent one of the 28,000 foster children in Los Angeles

County. It’s my mission to be the voice of a foster child, to advocate in his/her best interest. and to focus on one child and the child’s particular needs. Being a CASA has been a rewarding personal experience. I’ll never forget my first case - a little girl who had been in foster care for several years. I was able to help get the eye surgery she needed and support her through her recovery. Most memorable were the times we shared - her first ballet performance at Christmas when she was so excited she could hardly remain in her seat, the first time I took her to a restaurant that had “real tablecloths”, visits to University of Cali-
and Cultural Office based in Los Angeles; Ferdinando Guerrra, International Economist for LAEDC and Deborah Lee, CPA with Price Waterhouse. Meanwhile, Larry B. Ahlquist, General Manager of City Club Los Angeles welcomed guests
to the outstanding facility on the 51st floor on in downtown Los Angeles. Among the many things discussed Tuesday evening wwere California’s exports to Taiwan which reached $7.5 Billion in 2013, an 18.27% increase from 2012. Taiwan is Califor-
nia’s 4th largest export market in Asia, and 7th largest export market in the world. California has a long term and strong business relationship with Taiwan. There are more than 800 Taiwanese Please see page 5

As her CASA, I felt I was opening new worlds for her, showing her possibilities she did not even know existed. She enriched my life in a way I never expected. It allows me to be part of a solution to help change the lives of children, one by one. On Tuesday, August 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., more than 1,000 registered children of Foothill Unity Center client families went to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia to pick up new backpacks, grade-appropriate school supplies, uniforms, and clothing that they need to start the school year with confidence. Each year, the cost of this massive event is covered by donations from hundreds of local individuals, companies and organizations. For the eleventh year, Santa Anita Park is providing free use of its venue for the event.

Sheriff applauds decision of Supervisors to reject civilian oversight With a 3-2 vote, the Board of Supervisors Tuesday prohibited a proposal to create a civilian oversight commission for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, urging advocates to give the inspector general a chance to do his job. In response to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors vote on Civilian Oversight , Sheriff John Scott issued the following statement to the press: “I concur with the Board’s decision regarding civilian oversight of
the Sheriff’s Department. As stated in my June 30, 2014 letter, the best way to respond to concerns of the Board and the public regarding the Department’s operation is to complete the plan and development of the Office of Inspector General before considering the creation and implementation of a potential Citizens’ Oversight Commission. “ Office of Inspector General concurred saying: “I support the Board’s approval of the Office of Inspector General ordi-
nance, in substantial part. As stated in both my June 2, 2014 and August 1, 2014 letters, we will continue to work with Max Huntsman and his office in an effort to build a climate of trust and transparency within the organization and the public. To that end, we have formed a committee to establish working guidelines to ensure maximum cooperation and have requested a formal County Counsel opinion about legal access to confidential/privileged information.

is over burdened and we need your help. I encouraged this woman, who turned out to live only a block from me, to come to an information session to find out more about what we do and how we are trained. As it turns out, she is going to come with me next week
to hear more about this necessary and fascinating program! Please visit www. casala.org for more information. As we are a nonprofit organization, totally dependent on donations, contributions are very gratefully accepted. Our children need you!

HealthCare Partners medical group sites joined together in helping change the lives of people across the world by building 60 prosthetic hands last week. More than $15,000 in funds were raised through recycling and monetary donations. Each site received a bag with 30 pieces of unmarked plastic parts, an instruction manual,
markers and a bag to decorate. Odyssey Teams Helping Hands Program works with 25 different countries across the world to distribute these hands along with the decorated bags and photos of the participants to those who were born without a hand, whose hand was lost in an accident or through land mines.
Detectives arrest man accused of abandoning his six-year old son in South El Monte Park LASD Parks Bureau deputies responded to Legg Lake, located in the Whittier Narrows Regional Park, 750 South Santa Anita Avenue, South El Monte last Monday, regarding a found child. On Thursday detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Departments (LASD) Parks Bureau arrested Juan Garcia for Child Endangerment. Suspect Garcia is a male Hispanic, 31 years of age, and a resident of Pomona. The deputies contacted a person who found a six year old boy crying and looking for his father. They attempted to locate the father with the limited information that the young child provided. The child, who was cold and hungry, was placed in the deputy’s patrol car and fed while the Parks Bureau personnel continued to search. A vehicle believed to be driven by suspect Garcia was located nearby with a flat tire. The suspect was nowhere to be found. The child was placed into protective custody at 1:00 a.m. after all attempts to locate the father had been exhausted. The child’s mother was later located and took
custody of her son. Suspect Garcia was located and arrested. He was booked at San Dimas Sheriff’s Station where he is being held in lieu of $100,000.00 bail. He will appear in court on Monday, August 11, 2014. YME holds rehearsals weekly on Sunday evenings (5:30- 7:15 p.m.) and features a specially tailored musician-
ship course and individualized vocal coaching sessions that adhere to LACC’s exceptionally high standards. “Because one longtime funder is not participating this year, we needed extra support to maintain the quality and quantity of the items we give to our children,” said Betty McWilliams, the Center’s Executive Director. “A contribution of just $80 will fully outfit and equip one child, but any donation of funds, time and/or school supplies is appreciated. With the generous support of our community, we can once again make sure these kids start the school year on a level playing field; enthusiastic and ready to succeed.” Each child received: a Complete new uniform (2 tops/1 bottom), for High school students: new outfit (1 top/1 bottom or a dress), New backpack of child’s choice, School supplies packaged for each child’s grade, a $14 shoe gift card, Three pairs of socks and underwear, a Haircut and manicure, if desired, and finally, an Age-appropriate book of child’s choice from
Monrovia Reads. From community volunteers to corporate donors, state legislators to local restaurants, a full circle of support surrounded the children every step of the way. Thanks to months of advance planning and work, every child received individual attention. Professional cosmetologists and Citrus College students donated a full day of hair and manicure services, while the USC Ostrow School of Dentistry conducted free dental screenings. Local supporters also provided food and fun. One local supporter was the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), whose popular Mars Rover model demonstrated its delicate footwork by gently rolling over children. Every year this event also serves as a community resource fair where families can get information from the Department of Social Services, Hear Center, CHAPCare, Child Care
Information Services, Monrovia Health Center and Pasadena Public Health, Pacific Clinics and more. For further information, donation drop-off locations, and a volunteer signup form, visit foothillunitycenter.org/ bts. Passing of James Brady, Former Press Secretary to President Reagan “We are heartbroken over the passing of James Brady. We offer our deepest condolences to his wife, Sarah, and the rest of his family as we mourn the loss of our dear friend and a true American hero. "Jim never gave up fighting and never lost his trademark wit despite suffering a traumatic brain injury after being shot in 1981 by a mentally unstable young man attempting to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. Since then, he and Sarah have worked tirelessly to pass legislation that makes it harder for criminals and other dangerous people to buy guns. "Because of Jim’s hard work and the policy that bears his name—the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act—an estimated 2 million gun sales to criminals, domestic abusers and
other dangerous people have been blocked. As a result, countless lives have been saved. In fact, there are few Americans in history who are as directly responsible for saving as many lives as Jim. "Known to many as ‘Bear,’ Jim inspired millions with his strength, courage, perseverance and legendary sense of humor. He was also a great personal inspiration to me and my family. When my brother suffered a traumatic brain injury after a shooting at the Empire State Building, Jim and Sarah demonstrated that it was possible to turn a terrible tragedy into real change, and were a big part of the reason I chose to dedicate my own life to preventing gun violence. "I am deeply proud to have called Jim Brady a friend. He will be missed dearly by everyone at our
organization, which proudly bears his name, and by a nation that has been made better by his life. "Jim will always remain one of our greatest inspirations as this organization continues to lead the fight for a safer America.” Statement from Dan Gross, President, Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence We invite you to honor Jim Brady’s historic and inspiring legacy by signing our condolence card at www.BradyCampaign.org/ remembering-jim. The mission of the Brady organization is to create a safer America for all of us that will lead to a dramatic reduction in gun deaths and injuries. For more insight on gun violence prevention, follow us on Facebook at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Twitter @ BradyBuzz.

With Taiwan’s mature ICT industry, companies from California have heavily invested in Taiwan, establishing a strong bilateral relationship. According to the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs, by July 2012 the total direct investment from California to Taiwan amounted to $1.66 billion. “In addition to its mature and well established ICT industries, Taiwan is rapidly developing its biotech, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and renewable energy industries. Enhancing trade ties with Taiwan will help California not only increase its exports to Taiwan, but also promote bilateral cooperation in innovation through Silicon Valley and beyond,” according to information provided to us from The US Taiwanconnect website. Bringing New Trade and Investment Opportunities to the Golden State California has already attracted investment from many Taiwanese companies from a wide variety of sectors, from technology companies, including semiconductor giant TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), Foxconn Technology Group, Acer, to transportation firms, including China Airline, Eva Air, Evergreen Marine, Yang

According to Taiwan’s Investment Commission of the Ministry of Economic Affair (MOEAIC), the total direct investment from California to Taiwan amounted to $1.66 billion USD by July 2012. Taiwanese companies have created thousands of jobs in California, and there is still significant potential for Taiwanese enterprises to boost investment and create more jobs in California. Taiwan serves as an “ideal partner for U.S. business in Asia, “ according to TaiwanConnect “Taiwan has complete industrial supply chains, high concentration of industrial clusters, and a consolidated manufacturer base. The Swiss-based International Institute for Management Development’s (IMD) 2012 World Competitiveness Yearbook ranked Taiwan seventh in the world in terms of over-
all competitiveness and fifth in government efficiency. This is reflected in Taiwan’s comprehensive protection of intellectual property rights, sound legal system, and modern infrastructure.” Furthermore, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) signed between Taiwan and Mainland China in 2010 has opened up opportunities in Mainland China. Businesses can now collaborate with innovative Taiwanese companies and leverage ECFA to utilize Taiwan as a gateway to Mainland China and other fast-growing Asian markets. Ambassador Bruce J.D. Drummer Sandro Feliciano and friends play Red White & Bluezz - August 11 ‘Mi-Fi Mondays' at Red White + Bluezz continues to grow in popularity By Terry Miller There’s an astounding music scene in Pasadena but not everyone yet knows about the latest really cool gig which kick started last month at the popular Red White and Bluezz next to Pasadena Playhouse. It is actually a great marriage of musicians and food industry professionals who want a night away- for those in the business to let their hair down, so to speak, according to the music baron Dave Peterson who somehow managed to get these incredible musicians together . But then, anyone who knows Mr. Peterson recognizes he’s all about music…the best possible and will do “ whatever it takes” for the music to be heard in Pasadena. The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden is pleased to announce the second annual Feast at Baldwin Ranch. The event builds upon the success of last year’s Feast, which hosted over 140 guests. This year’s special dinner will take place on the Meadowbrook Lawn on Sunday, September 28th at 5pm and raises funds for the Arboretum’s youth education programs. Over 16,000 school children participate in the Arboretum’s Field Trips every year and more than 50% of them come from low-income, urban households. A team of five chefs, led by Claud Beltran of The Eatery in Pasadena, will prepare local and seasonal dishes. Beltran, who grew up just three blocks away from the Arboretum, recalls it as a place of adventure, “a jungle with a lake, lots of trees to get lost
in, and a little Mexican type town and house…and miles to run and hide.” He hopes today’s children will have the same opportunities to explore and benefit from the Arboretum. Learning about food and sustainability and plants and how things grow is an important part of childhood,” Beltran says. “By uniting five local chefs for an evening of food and wine, we hope to raise funds to keep and enhance these programs for kids and cooking programs for adults alike. I hope it [becomes a continuous] effort with another of these dinners in the spring and then again in the summer and fall.” The chefs will include Sushi Chef Ota-San of Japon Bistro in Pasadena, Paul Ragan of AltaEats in Pasadena, Sean Lowenthal of the Little Beast in Los Angeles, and Britanny
Turnquist of the Poppy Cake Baking Company. Steve Riboli owner of the San Antonio Winery will offer wine pairings for each course. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your
sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-7302727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www. qualityloan.com , using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-14-618324-JP . Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee, or the Mortgagee’s Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right’s against the real property only. As required by law, you are hereby notified that a negative credit report reflecting on your credit record may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit obligations.
