Mike Herdman memorial service brings out hundreds of firefighters, family and friends ‘Our hearts are broken'

A group of El Monte residents and local public servants gathered Wednesday, July 9, in the Grace T. Black Auditorium, for Mayor Andre Quintero’s delivery of the State of the City Address. This was the third like discourse that Quintero has presented during his time as the City’s Mayor. Following are some key points learned during the speech: • The City counts with 289 full-time employees, the number reduced from the 410 that it had in 2003. The staff shrunk in an effort to cut City expenses. Quintero acknowledged that, as a result, more work now falls upon the shoulders of less people, so he praised City employees for their dedication, at one point asking them to stand up so they could be recognized by applause. • The projected general fund revenue for fiscal year 2014/15 is 54.5 million.

El Monte honors Andrew Aguilar for success at Stanford University The El Monte City Council honored resident Andrew Aguilar at a recent Council meeting for his outstanding completion of two university degrees in four years – a bachelor’s in history and a master’s in history with a Middle East area focus (with honors) – from Stanford University. Aguilar recently was awarded the Robert M. Golden Medal for Excellence in the Humanities and Creative Arts –a prestigious award given to only 9 to 10 standout Stanford students each year. “Andrew is a role model for our community and is a great example of what you can achieve if you are willing to
