Hernández Child Labor Protections Measure signed by Governor Assemblymember Roger Hernández (D-West Covina) announced that AB 2288 was signed by Governor Brown this week. AB 2288 will strengthen current law to protect children from child labor abuses. “I thank Governor Brown for his continued support in protecting our minors. Although, many may believe the exploitation of minors is a thing of the past, it is very prevalent in many industries today. This is why we must continue to protect our children from abuses. Some of our earliest labor laws in this nation were aimed to protect minors who were often mistreated and abused in the workplace,” stated Hernández. A report published by the Human Rights Watch in November of 2011 indicated child labor in the United States exposed minors as young as seven years Please see page 4

On June 22, 2014, at approximately 12:30 p.m., a brush fire broke out in Brand Park, causing damage to approximately 150 acres of mountain terrain. Although no homes or structures were damaged, Detectives have determined through their investigation and witness statements that the three-day brushfire may have been a result of arson. The suspects are believed to be three males in their mid to late teens and were last seen running to what is described as a gray sport utility style vehicle. The suspects fled during a time when the park was occupied by many visitors

A close friend recommended I check out Levi Ponce’s art (www.leviponce. com). Thrilled about what I saw, we set up an interview at the location of his next mural on a Sunday. In the afternoon, I arrive at Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Heights, where Levi and his crew had already been working for two hours on a memorial painting for MexicanAmerican starlet Jenni Rivera who died in a plane crash 2012. Approximately a dozen people stand around the shaded spot where Levi is Please see page 3

painting alongside his father and a few other artists he had invited to join, including Rivera’s son Mike. While Levi’s father is coloring the yellow flowers at the bottom of a painting, Levi stands on a ladder shading Rivera’s face. The bilingual artist tells me that he has been painting since he was 4 and that he has “always been the kid with a paint brush in his hand.” Levi idolizes his father with whom he regularly paints, and legendary Classics such as Salvador Dali, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. When I ask him if he prefers realistic styles, he says no; he loves everything that looks good: sculpture, graffiti, pop art, etc. In 2011, the artist, who works in visual effects for his day time job in the film industry, started to use his art to bring the community of his hometown Pacoima together. When he paints, he invites everyone to join. Together with many other volunteers, he transformed graffiti marked walls of his neighborhood into what is now called the “Mural Mile.” The strip on Van Nuys Boulevard between Arleta and Herrick Avenue now hosts more than 20 murals depicting Levi’s interpretation of Mona Lisa, a tribute to Michelangelo, several portraits, etc. According to a Huffington post article, Kevin Taylor, chairman of the Reseda Neighborhood Council, praises Levi’s and his work: “Levi is without a doubt one of the most important artists in Los Angeles right now, “

he said. “With the work he’s doing, his skill level, talent, the speed with which he works and the positive messages he brings to his murals, what he’s bringing to communities that need his work ... To have the opportunity to have him painting here in Reseda is a huge honor, and the murals that he’s leaving here are treasures.” However, the Cal State Northridge graduate does not limit his murals to the San Fernando Valley. With his art, he wants to “paint cities, not walls,” as he says. His murals and paintings are all over Los Angeles, but also on the east coast. His eyes light up when Levi tells me about his ultimate goal to tour the world while painting, but especially in Brazil, where they have “a mean street art game,” as he describes it. When I ask the artist for a message that he wants to get out, he says: “You don’t need your city’s permission if you want to do something positive.” He is not interested in starting his own organization to help communities, but would rather have existing organizations work closer together instead of competing with them by starting his own. After all, “I just want to paint,” he states. Levi does not get paid for his murals; he finances them out of his own pocket. By painting them, he not only beautifies communities, but also engages them to work together. More information about Levi Ponce and his art can be found on www.leviponce.com.

The Art of Make & Believe A little junebugs story

There is art, a knack or talent, in the ability to create happiness for others. “You have to like it!” says Courtney Collins, the cofounder and creator of little junebugs, a charming gift boutique and craft studio for children located in the city of Pasadena. Courtney’s inspiration for creating a space for kids to grow their imagination came from her years of service as a nanny and from her previous career at the children’s bookstore and art gallery, Storyopolis. During her time at Storyopolis, Courtney and little junebugs’ co-founder, Brian, decided to establish their own location that would “provide a place for children to take a break and unplug; a place to feed creative, little minds.” As you enter little junebugs, a miraculous little world unfolds: scanimation books on animals and fairy tales; circus carnival-inspired glitter glue; robots that transform into pens with the press of a thumb; and a crafting room (for hosting

by Marie Valdes birthday parties) with a ‘Wall of Wonder,’ adorned with the artwork created by little crafters themselves. With support from its loyal customers and the Pasadena Playhouse District Association, little junebugs has created opportunities throughout the community which provide a “giving back” component, supporting local charities such as the MaxLove Project and CoachArt. MaxLove Brand merchandise can be purchased at the boutique, with 100% of net proceeds going to fund research and resources, through the MaxLove Project, for children with cancer and life-threatening conditions. Through her partnership with CoachArt, an organization dedicated to bettering the lives of children with chronic illness, Courtney and her partners at little junebugs have donated their time and crafts to camp make & believe: an arts and crafts workshop held

once a month for children participating in the CoachArt program. ‘Believing that art makes things better,’ is Courtney’s commitment to the community through her non-profit organization make & believe. “make & believe invites children living with illness to use art and crafting to promote well-being and to provide an identity beyond their illness. Our arts and crafts programs incorporate a mix of different mediums and styles of creating art to appeal to any artistic spirit.” Courtney and little junebugs will be hosting an adult crafting night on Saturday, July 12 to continue its support of make & believe. For every admission ticket of $25, little junebugs will donate a make & believe craft kit in your name, to a patient of Children’s Hospital of Orange County. For more information about this event, please visit littlejunebugs.com and click on the link to their Facebook page.

But most of all, each speaker told of the love of his life, his 6-year-old daughter Sienna. We was devoted to her so much that he’d pull her out of school to go to the beach…just because. The tearful recollections were peppered with many humorous anecdotes that Mike Herdman was known for, including dressing up once as Goldilocks. Ventura County Sheriff’s Department discovered Michael Herdman’s body two weeks ago in rugged terrain approximately 1200 feet

above the Sespe River outside of Fillmore. On Friday, June 13, 2014, Arcadia Firefighter/ Paramedics, Mike Herdman and Taylor Byars, became separated while on a weekend camping trip in the Sespe Wilderness Area. Mr. Byars looked for Mr. Herdman and made his way out of the wilderness area and notified authorities on the evening of Sunday, June 15, 2014. Beginning on Monday June 16, 2014, the Ventura County Sheriff and Fire Department, along with hundreds of volunteer Search and Rescue personnel, searched for Mike Herdman concluding in the recovery of his body last Friday morning. Beth Stogner, Arcadia Fire spokesperson, said:

“Our hearts are broken, individually and collectively, by the news of Mike’s death. We are forever indebted to the Ventura County Sheriff’s and Fire Departments for their gallant and exhaustive efforts to find our brother and friend and bring him home. “We extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to Mike’s family and stand ready to assist them in the difficult days, weeks, and months ahead. “We also want to express our sincere thanks to our community and the many others who shared an outpouring of love and support.” Mike Herdman, 36 years old, was a 7-year veteran of the Arcadia Fire Department.

old worked on farms. Many times, these children worked an excess of 10 hours or more per day at the peak of harvest. According to the report, 17 states do not cover agricultural employment in their child labor laws, including: Alabama, Delaware, Montana, Texas, Wyoming and others. Specifically, this bill would strengthen those

rights by lengthening the statute of limitations giving minors who would not otherwise fully know their rights and are susceptible to intimidation and coercion the opportunity to seek relief until the age of maturity. This bill also provides added protections against retaliation for those minors’ that bring claims forward.

The measure would allow treble damages (triple-the amount), or the recovery of three times the amount of actual financial losses suffered. Lastly, this bill would strengthen civil penalties in Class “A” violations, the most serious violations and would increase the civil penalty from $5,000-$10,000 to $25,000-$50,000.

Summer at SpringHill Suites in Oceanside By Greg Aragon There is nothing like a new hotel. From smiling staff and shimmering paint to shiny floors and crisp bed sheets, everything is fresh and exciting. And when its summertime and the hotel is located in a cool, California beach town, then things really get good. Such is the case with the new 149-room SpringHill Suites San Diego Oceanside/Downtown, which opened 5 months ago in the city of Oceanside. Located one block from the water, this hip, surf-inspired retreat is already making waves. A friend and I recently snuck away to SpringHill Suites to investigate. Our getaway began when we strolled through a spacious and luminous lobby and checked into a modern suite, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Featuring a “calming color palate inspired by the beach and modern décor,” the room had an unmistakable “brand new” feel and scent, like a new car, only bigger and better! It was highlighted by a long entry hallway leading to a efficient office area with work station and glass dividers. Next to the office was a pullout sofa and a big, comfy king bed, facing a 42-inch flat-screen TV. The suite offered a sleek bathroom and glassenclosed shower and marble counters; free Wi-Fi, a microwave, mini-fridge and coffee maker. It also boasted a comfortable balcony with incredible views of the beach, the historic Oceans-

ide Pier, and the 125-yr-old Queen-Anne Victorian cottage that Kelly McGillis called home in the Tom Cruise movie “Top Gun.” Once nestled into our suite we enjoyed complimentary wine and cheese for happy hour in the hotel’s game room. Here, while sipping cabernet we admired a bright yellow and blue room with a foosball table, board games, books and wrap-around sofa. After the welcome drink, we strolled out the lobby, and studied the hotel’s giant outside wall made of live succulent plants, meant to resemble wave patterns. With the summer sun still beating down we donned on our swimsuits and hit the hotel’s heated rooftop pool, which also overlooks the beach. After swimming, we dined at Hello Betty Fish House. Sharing the property with the hotel, Hello Betty “provides a visual reflec-

tion of the local, eclectic characters of Oceanside’s beach life,” says its website. “Our menus reflect an updated spin on classic Baja SoCal beachside favorites such as margaritas and fish tacos.” Our meal began with a rich and tasty Baja Stone crab and cheese dip with tortilla chips and a couple of O’Side Rita Margarita’s with Jose Cuervo, Patron Citronge and lime. As the beach and tequila vibe flowed through our veins, we moved on to the main course. I enjoyed a traditional Mexican seafood cocktail, with mussels, clams, octopus, shrimp, fish, and spicy citrus, served in a tall glass with cocktail sauce. My friend sampled the tender grilled black Angus ribeye steak, with chipotle butter and French fries. After dinner we walked less than a minute to the boardwalk, where

we strolled down Oceanside’s historic 2,000 ft-long pier, which was originally built in 1888. Along the way we encountered fishermen, tourists and the ubiquitous pelican, perching on the wooden planks. In the morning I worked out at the property’s fitness center and then took advantage of the hotel’s complimentary hot breakfast with scrambled eggs, sausage, muffins and toast, cereal, fresh juice and fruit. We rounded out the morning with a visit to the California Surf Museum, which is replete with surfboards, surf art, historical memorabilia and everything to do with surfing. schools by PSHA. The proceeds from the 2013 Showcase House enabled the organization to continue its legacy of funding music programs throughout the community. Eileen Reilly, a resident of La Cañada Flintridge, who has been a member of PSHA for twelve years, will be chairing the Gifts & Grants Committee. Ms. Reilly, a retired attorney, is excited about chairing this committee and overseeing the process. She understands the critical difference

these grants make to programs that struggle financially and how important these programs are to the community. Each year, PSHA awards gifts and grants to a diverse list of non-profit organizations to support their efforts in the community. Concerts are underwritten to insure that the joy of live music is available to a broad range of audiences. Support of choirs, musical theater, school marching bands, dance programs, opera, jazz bands, and orchestras en-

riches the community and provides opportunities for a variety of groups, from students to seniors, to learn, enjoy and grow from their experiences in these programs. Additionally, PSHA has a longstanding history of supporting the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its community outreach programs. Since 1948, PSHA has donated nearly $20 million to outstanding organizations that enrich the lives of countless people and support the arts throughout the community.
