Smells Like Gen X Spirit By Hugo Torres Who would have thought that the kids (like me) who wore Doc Martens, listened to Stone Temple Pilots and helped the flannel industry roar back would be slowly be positioning themselves to account for the majority of Real Estate transactions in the years to come? According to data recently released by the National Association of REALTORS (click here) Gen Y (Born between 1980 - 1995) and Gen X (1965 - 1979) in combination take part in 41% of all home sales and 61% of home purchases. That’s a lot of houses being sold and it overshadows movement by Baby Boomers in
recent years. What I am finding particularly interesting and what I see as the biggest ongoing change to the Real Estate from now on is the increasing speed by which today’s consumer accesses and processes market information. As technology savvy and responsible as I have trained myself to be in my many years as a REALTOR I am finding that modern customers have countless ways to gather data before I do. All data is not created equal though and this is another challenge of today’s real estate customer. Whereas the classic adages of Real Estate haven’t really changed, I (and many
of my colleagues) are noticing that customers are packed with bits of information that often turns out to be out of context, half true or heavily biased. It is then our task to give insights and education on the realities of the local trends and how we can best achieve their goals. I got to say that I’ve become quite adept on this because common sense can really serve be a universal meeting place for rational minds. Or, I could always put on some old STP CDs on the way to showings and talk about the old days. You can’t even go wrong with some good ol’ fashioned grunge!

All three suspects were arrested and transported to the West Covina Police Department jail and are scheduled to appear at the West Covina Superior Court on Wednesday, officials said. The three men are accused of burglarizing a home in the 1100 block of South Montezuma Way in West Covina just after 9:30 a.m. on June 30, officials said. Officers taking the call arrived on scene and located a white Chevy S-10 parked in front of the location and f in a neighbor’s back yard. The second suspect ran into the South

Officers determined that the male who was in the vehicle was involved in the burglary and all three suspects were arrested without further incident, officials said. A 78-year-old male resident was inside the location asleep in his bedroom during the burglary. initial court appearance,” according to Los Angeles County booking records. Alhambra police detectives came to Wang’s condominium in the 100 block of South Marguerita Avenue in the evening of June 24 to look into community tips that a brothel was being operated out of the residence, according to Alhambra police Sgt. Jerry Johnson. Johnson said detectives simply knocked on the door and Wang politely invited them in. “Two female adults wearing robes were inside of the residence,” police officials said in a written statement. “The females worked for Wang by conducting massages and sexual acts at the residence for money.”
Those women were not arrested along with Wang with their ages being 44 and 47, Johnson said, adding “charges could be filed later by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.” Wang admitted in Chinese to the police that he indeed was running a brothel and was arrested on suspicion of pimping, Johnson said, adding the women appear to have been working there voluntarily. Wang had been scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on June 27 in Alhambra Superior Court, according to county booking records. We didn’t get any flack last year for cutting it. But we didn’t want to be seen as wasting water.” And no parade in Sierra Madre is complete without the timeless belly dancer Katrelya Angus who strolls down Sierra Madre Boulevard in costume and with music. “She was the first to register,” Annes said of Angus. “She’s always there.” (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@beaconmedianews. com. High school students to work with renowned local researchers and professionals Gifted students from across the country to come to Institute for Educational Advancement summer Apprenticeship Program Twenty-nine high school students are stepping out of the classroom and into the real world to apply their knowledge to handson, cutting-edge research and professional projects with renowned local scientists, doctors, professors and experts over the next two months in Pasadena and Los Angeles. The Apprenticeship Program, created and administered by Pasadenabased Institute for Educational Advancement (IEA), links gifted high school students from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds with mentors in Pasadena and Los Angeles who advance each participant’s skills through the application of knowledge and exposure to real world experiences. In an effort to ensure as many qualified students as possible have access to this experience, IEA provides financial aid to those students in need. “I think it is very important for young bright students to have the opportunity to try research and spend a few weeks in a university research lab, and I am very happy to help make this happen,” said Dr. Van Savage, UCLA professor and IEA Apprenticeship mentor. “I wish more people helped these kids; they are amazing!” Pasadena-area Apprenticeships include industrial design at a local art institution and astronomy and astrophysics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Eleven Apprentices will be working in Pasadena. Other Apprenticeships in Los Angeles include cancer research at The Angeles Clinic, pediatric medical research at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, law at the Inner City Law Center, biochemistry and neuroscience at UCLA and biomedical engineering and data and computer science at USC. In its 16th year, IEA’s
residential summer Apprenticeship Program has provided more than 600 gifted high school students nationwide with the opportunity to further develop their high intellectual ability by matching each student’s unique gifts, talents and interests with the most appropriate mentors and work sites. It also encourages students to balance this intellectual ability with their social, spiritual, emotional, and physical growth. The 2014 program runs June 22 to Aug. 9 in Los Angeles and Pasadena. Students are housed in dorms at USC and spend their days working with mentors in a variety of subject areas. In the evenings and on weekends, Apprentices participate in IEA-facilitated leadership and character building activities, attend cultural events, participate in recreational activities and explore Los Angles. Outings planned for this summer include the Levitt Pavilion Summer Music Festival, the Griffith Park Shakespeare Festival and the Getty museum. Students are also exposed to college life, living in dorms away from their families with other students their age and experiencing high-level research and work experience. This is valuable to the many students who have not set foot on a college campus. IEA facilitates workshops to help students prepare for the college application process, and Apprentices often go on to attend prestigious colleges and universities, including many who enroll at their host institutions. Since 1998, IEA has been dedicated to the whole child, nurturing gifted children ages 2-18. Independent of government funding, IEA gives students the tools to work toward actualizing their full intellectual and personal potential in a safe and supportive environment.
Pasadena’s 2015 Rose Parade Grand Marshal WWII Hero Louis Zamperini dies Continued from page 1
-Photo by Terry Miller Grand Marshal for the 2015 Tournament of Roses, themed “Inspiring Stories.” Zamperini, age 97, was slated to ride in the 126th Rose Parade® on January 1, 2015. Tournament of Roses President, Richard L. Chinen, made the announcement at a press conference at Tournament House in Pasadena. In his remarks, Chinen referred to Zamperini as” inspiring in his courage and resilience.” “Louis Zamperini’s life story illustrates the strength of human spirit in many ways. From becoming a young sports hero in Southern California to surviving for 47 days on an inflatable raft in the Pacific Ocean and then persevering for more than two years held in captivity in Japan, Louis now lives as an enduring symbol of perseverance, heroism and forgiveness. His life is truly a series of ‘Inspiring Stories,’ and I am elated and humbled that he accepted our invitation to be the 2015 Grand Marshal.” “It is such an honor to be the Grand Marshal
of the 126th Rose Parade,” said Zamperini. “Growing up in Torrance, the parade route on Colorado Boulevard is one I have been familiar with my whole life. I look forward to sharing the experience with my family and all the fans of the Rose Parade who will be watching.” Zamperini wrote his personal history in the book “Devil at My Heels” and his life story was documented in the New York Times bestselling book, “Unbroken,” written by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Laura Hillenbrand. In December 2014, Universal Pictures will release the movie, “Unbroken,” a feature adaptation of the book. Born in 1917 to Italian immigrants, Zamperini moved to Torrance, California in 1919 and became a world-class runner by the end of high school. Qualifying to run in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, he was America’s top finisher in the 5000 meter run, finishing the final lap in 56 seconds and causing Adolf Hitler to request a personal meeting with
the track star. During World War II, Zamperini retired from running and joined the U.S. Armed Forces as a bombardier in the South Pacific. While on a reconnaissance mission, Zamperini’s aircraft crashed into the Pacific Ocean. He and a crewmate survived for 47 days in shark-infested waters eventually drifting into a Japanese-controlled region where he was held and tortured for another two years. He survived the brutality of the war and came back to Southern California where he was treated like a hero and celebrated for his longevity. Zamperini married, had a family and started on a quest of forgiveness as an inspirational speaker – meeting with and forgiving the Japanese military guards who tortured him. Until very recently, Zamperini was still lecturing around the world on how to deal with stress, the meaning of Olympic spirit and the freedom he has found through a personal relationship with God.
