Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Emergency Services Detail (ESD) divers have suspended their efforts for the day, in searching Lake Pyramid for any additional victims. The search began when LASD Parks Bureau deputies found 52 year-old Rich Tanovan on Sunday, June 29th, submerged under water approximately fifteen feet from the shore. Tanovan, a resident of West Covina, was caught amongst the foliage and apparently drowned. However, the exact cause of death has yet to be determined. There are indicators that Tanovan was accompanied on the boat by a friend, Jack Thirasack, a 64 year-old resident of Baldwin

BY TERRY MILLER Many said Tournament of Roses President, Richard L. Chinen’s choice was’ wonderful and a natural choice” for the theme of next year’s parade while many more pondered whether the 97 year old war hero would live long enough to ride those 5 miles in the pa-

rade on January 1. Sadly, the cynics were right. Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner whose remarkable story of survival as a prisoner of war in World War II gained new attention in 2010 with the publication of a best-selling biography by Laura Hillenbrand, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 97.

Burbank Fire Dept. to charge for medical calls If you need services rendered by the Burbank Fire Department that do not require transporting you to the hospital you are now going to have to pay for it. While it was free in the past the Burbank City Council recently approved a $100 fee to emergency medical calls that don’t take you to the hospital, according to a published report. Charging the fee is a “way to recover personnel costs,” according to that report. Called a paramedicassessment fee, it was ap-

BY SHEL SEGAL proved as part of the fiscal year 2014-15 budget. Burbank is not alone in charging this fee, said Fire Chief Tom Lenahan, who added Glendale and Pasadena also have similar fees as do cities up and down California. Lenahan said as the department responds to approximately 7,800 emergency calls a year, around three-fifths of those call take someone to the hospital at a cost of $1,100 to $1,500. But he also said there is a cost to the department when no one is transported and a call has been made. The good thing about

the fee is that it is usually covered by insurance and it was “derived by calculating personnel costs for a typical response, which generally lasts 20 minutes and includes a fire captain, engineer, two firefighters and two paramedics,” according to that report. Another way to beat the fee is by enrolling in the the department’s Emergency Medical Service Membership program, which costs $48 a year. Under the program, all permanent residents in the subscribing household can avoid out-ofPlease see page 4

A statement released by his family said he had been suffering from pneumonia. In May Zamperini was announced as the Grand Marshal for the 2015 Tournament of Roses, themed “Inspiring Stories.” Zamperini, age 97, was slated to ride in the 126th Rose Parade® on January 1, 2015.
