Transit Deputies arrest suspect wanted for assaulting metro bus patrons

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Emergency Services Detail (ESD) divers have suspended their efforts for the day, in searching Lake Pyramid for any additional victims. The search began when LASD Parks Bureau deputies found 52 year-old Rich Tanovan on Sunday, June 29th, submerged under water approximately fifteen feet from the shore. Tanovan, a resident of West Covina, was caught amongst the foliage and apparently drowned. However, the exact cause of death has yet to be determined. There are indicators that Tanovan was accompanied on the boat by a friend, Jack Thirasack, a 64 year-old resident of Baldwin

Tournament of Roses President, Richard L. Chinen, made the announcement at a press conference at Tournament House in Pasadena. In his remarks, Chinen referred to Zamperini as” inspiring in his courage and resilience.” “Louis Zamperini’s

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Transit Policing Division Deputies arrested Hector Resendez, a 24 years old man, wanted in connection with 8 assaults that occurred on various Metro buses. Resendez is believed to have assaulted a patron at 10:35 this morning, and got off the bus at Slauson Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard, in the City of Maywood. Deputies quickly responded to the area and established a perimeter. Resendez was arrested a short time later without incident, near the corner of Slauson Avenue and Pacific Boulevard, in the City of Huntington Park. Resendez was found with the weapon he is believed to have been using during the assaults. Re-

BY TERRY MILLER Many said Tournament of Roses President, Richard L. Chinen’s choice was’ wonderful and a natural choice” for the theme of next year’s parade while many more pondered whether the 97 year old war hero would live long enough to ride those 5 miles in the pa-

rade on January 1. Sadly, the cynics were right. Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner whose remarkable story of survival as a prisoner of war in World War II gained new attention in 2010 with the publication of a best-selling biography by Laura Hillenbrand, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 97.

Burbank Fire Dept. to charge for medical calls If you need services rendered by the Burbank Fire Department that do not require transporting you to the hospital you are now going to have to pay for it. While it was free in the past the Burbank City Council recently approved a $100 fee to emergency medical calls that don’t take you to the hospital, according to a published report. Charging the fee is a “way to recover personnel costs,” according to that report. Called a paramedicassessment fee, it was ap-

BY SHEL SEGAL proved as part of the fiscal year 2014-15 budget. Burbank is not alone in charging this fee, said Fire Chief Tom Lenahan, who added Glendale and Pasadena also have similar fees as do cities up and down California. Lenahan said as the department responds to approximately 7,800 emergency calls a year, around three-fifths of those call take someone to the hospital at a cost of $1,100 to $1,500. But he also said there is a cost to the department when no one is transported and a call has been made. The good thing about

the fee is that it is usually covered by insurance and it was “derived by calculating personnel costs for a typical response, which generally lasts 20 minutes and includes a fire captain, engineer, two firefighters and two paramedics,” according to that report. Another way to beat the fee is by enrolling in the the department’s Emergency Medical Service Membership program, which costs $48 a year. A statement released by his family said he had been suffering from pneumonia. In May Zamperini was announced as the Grand Marshal for the 2015 Tournament of Roses, themed “Inspiring Stories.” Zamperini, age 97, was slated to ride in the 126th Rose Parade® on January 1, 2015.

Football clinic draws hundreds of area kids to Robinson Park By SHEL SEGAL More than 100 kids from Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley attended a free half-day football clinic on Saturday on Robinson Park that was sponsored by the Tournament of Roses and Northwestern Mutual. Led by college football coaches from several area universities–such as Pasadena City College–the kids, aged 5 to 14, took part in agility drills, offensive and defensive training, and character development. With around 150 kids at the clinic, Richard Chinen, president of the Tournament of Roses, said it was great his organization was able to help partner with others and put on this event. “It’s great to be able to have them engage with us,” said Chinen, who added this is the fifth year for the event. “We’re doing this for the community. We’re a community organization. We started with a parade, then we had

chariot races. Now, we’ve got a football game and football’s huge. It’s great for the kids to be able to participate in something Pasadena is known for. What better way to give back to the community and these kids than to host something like this.” He added he thinks the kids will have a great time at the clinic. “I think they get a lot out of this,” he said. “You’ve got a lot of topnotch clinicians. They’ll run all types of drills, a lot that the colleges run with spring and summer workouts. It’s great stuff.” Chinen also said he just hope the kids enjoy themselves on the field. “The main thing is to have fun and that you can have fun playing a sport and learning how play right, knowing that if you are going to do this you have to be healthy and be in shape,” he said. “You have to work as part of a team.” In addition, he said he is glad the Pasadena area is

able to put on the clinic for the kids. “It’s great when a community comes together like this for the kids because oftentimes parents will sign the kids up and drag them along,” he said. “But these kids are here to have fun and learn from the very best.” Fred Fimbres, head football coach at PCC who was helping coordinate the clinic, agreed with Chinen. “I think the importance is to engage the community,” Fimbres said. “The Rose Bowl and the city of Pasadena are synonymous with one another. I think that to engage the community and the activity the people think of with the Rose Bowl and Pasadena and that is football, anytime we can get young people out and get them moving and getting them some valuable lessons will help us.” (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@beaconmedianews.com. Water main break in Montrose On Tuesday, July 1, a 12-inch water main was ruptured at the intersection of Verdugo Road and Honolulu Avenue in Montrose. This rupture created a sinkhole at the intersection. Glendale Water & Power, Glendale Public Works and Crescenta Valley Water District crews will be working through the next couple

days to repair the broken main and roadways. For the next two days westbound Verdugo Boulevard is closed at Clifton Place. Eastbound Honolulu Avenue traffic at Verdugo Road is detoured north and south. Crews will be making the repairs and will have the intersection temporarily reopened

by Friday, July 4. In the coming weeks, Crescenta Valley Water District and Glendale Water & Power will be notifying residents of temporary water shut-offs to make permanent repairs to the damaged pipe. The water main rupture is not expected to delay the ongoing intersection improvement project.

life story illustrates the strength of human spirit in many ways. From becoming a young sports hero in Southern California to surviving for 47 days on an inflatable raft in the Pacific Ocean and then persevering for more than two years held in captivity in Japan, Louis now lives as an enduring symbol of perseverance, heroism and forgiveness. His life is truly a series of ‘Inspiring Stories,’ and I am elated and humbled that he accepted our invitation to be the 2015 Grand Marshal.” “It is such an honor to be the Grand Marshal of the 126th Rose Parade,” said Zamperini. “Growing up in Torrance, the parade route on Colorado Boulevard is one I have been familiar with my whole life. I look forward to sharing the experience with my family and all the fans of the Rose Parade who will be watching.”

Zamperini wrote his personal history in the book “Devil at My Heels” and his life story was documented in the New York Times best-selling book, “Unbroken,” written by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Laura Hillenbrand. In December 2014, Universal Pictures will release the movie, “Unbroken,” a feature adaptation of the book. Born in 1917 to Italian immigrants, Zamperini moved to Torrance, California in 1919 and became a world-class runner by the end of high school. Qualifying to run in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, he was America’s top finisher in the 5000 meter run, finishing the final lap in 56 seconds and causing Adolf Hitler to request a personal meeting with the track star. During World War II, Zamperini retired from running and joined the U.S. Armed Forces as a

bombardier in the South Pacific. While on a reconnaissance mission, Zamperini’s aircraft crashed into the Pacific Ocean. He and a crewmate survived for 47 days in sharkinfested waters eventually drifting into a Japanesecontrolled region where he was held and tortured for another two years. He survived the brutality of the war and came back to Southern California where he was treated like a hero and celebrated for his longevity. Zamperini married, had a family and started on a quest of forgiveness as an inspirational speaker – meeting with and forgiving the Japanese military guards who tortured him. Until very recently, Zamperini was still lecturing around the world on how to deal with stress, the meaning of Olympic spirit and the freedom he has found through a personal relationship with God.

Park, as family members confirmed with investigators that they went to the lake together. Thirasack’s fishing license was found in the water on Sunday, near the partially submerged boat that was about 30 yards from the shore. LASD Emergency Services Detail divers have searched the underwater area near the site for the past three days, using several divers, sonar equipment

and an underwater cadaver dog. The dog was also used to search Chumash Island, which is in the lake near the area where the boat was found. Update: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Emergency Services Detail (ESD) divers have located the body of 64-year-old Jack Thirasack in Pyramid Lake at approximately 9:15 Wednesday morning.

Detectives believe that Thirasack died as a result of drowning, though the exact cause of death is unknown. The body was found 20 feet from shore, approximately 30 feet northeast from where the body of Rich Tanovan was found on Sunday.
