Los Angeles Gay Freedom Band celebrate’s LGBT composers - March 16 Band continues its 35th Anniversary Season with a free concert in in Los Angeles

Families come in all forms--some are made up of relatives, some are families of choice and many are a mixture of the two. And for many LGBT people, the word “family” has long been the code for “one of us.” This spring the L.A. Gay Freedom Band celebrates the artistic heritage of the LGBT family with music by gay composers at First Congregational Church of Los Angeles’ Shatto Chapel. Led by Artistic Director Justin Raines, the Freedom Band continues its 35th Anniversary Season with music by LGBT composers including Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Jerry Herman and more. The program will range in scope covering music from 3 centuries, including music from Tchaikovsky’sNutcracker, the musicals Hairspray and La Cage Aux Folles, Pulitzer Prize winning composer Jennifer Higdon, Sir Elton John’s Candle In The Wind and Bernstein’s political overture Slava! “As part of our 35th Anniversary Season, it’s really important to play the

Although the Legislature cannot make it rain, Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) is doing the next best thing: creating new sources of clean water. Assemblyman Gatto introduced AB 2282 last week, which requires the state to adopt building standards for recycled water in newly constructed commercial and residential buildings, helping California integrate recycled water into its water-supply portfolio for the future. What’s your leadership style? By Heather Backstrom

Leadership happens every day in every imaginable setting and yet it’s one of those elusive concepts that are nearly indefinable. Just complete the sentence, “leadership is ….” and see how many different responses you can give. Now, finish the sentence, “my leadership is characterized as ….” and again, see how many different nuances describe your own leadership style. In varying degrees leadership includes influencing others, generating results, creating followership, establishing purpose, building motivation, expending authority, taking risks and shaping the future. How a person goes about exhibiting their leadership varies. Let’s take a look at some leadership styles and see which ones best describe you. Achievement Oriented: This leader sets a high bar for employees and expects them to reach it. Through challenging assignments the leader keeps employees focused on achieving goals and producing high quality results. Collaborating: A collaborating leader builds trust, shares information, encourages brainstorming, values minority opinions and builds consensus. The collaborating leader gets work done and goals accomplished through their relationships with others. Coaching: This kind of leader is concerned about getting the job done as well as the emotional welfare of their employees. Encouraging followers, asking for their suggestions and reassuring employees along the way characterize this kind of leader. At the same time the leader keeps employees focused on the goal and the

-Courtesy Photo

importance of achieving it. Delegating: A leader who emphasizes delegation let’s their employees be responsible for planning, carrying out and accomplishing their work. A delegating leader essentially steps aside to let their employees decide how to go about doing their work and accomplishing goals. Directing: A directing leader tends to give a good amount of instruction that’s focused on achieving the goal at hand. The leader does this by clearly defining roles, setting expectations and allocating resources. A directing leader let’s their team know what needs to be done, how to do it and by when. Inspirational: This type of leader establishes a strong and appealing vision. They also clarify its value, set the strategy to achieve it and gains employee commitment to it. This leader is confident about the future and inspires employees toward achieving the vision. Supportive: A supportive leader is focused on bringing out the best skills in their employees. This is done by demonstrating behaviors such as listening, praising,

asking for suggestions, offering feedback, giving compliments and passing along advice. You may find that your leadership style falls into several of these categories. This is because leadership is not static. Rather, your leadership approach can vary depending upon the situation, the needs of your employees, priorities, expectations from your supervisor, competition and other variables. So, a blend of these styles is to be expected. You may also realize that some of these styles come naturally to you while others do not. To help expand the scope of how you lead, challenge yourself to practice those styles that you don’t tend to use. This will build your skills making you a more confident and flexible leader. Now, go back to finish the sentence, “my leadership is characterized as ….” This can help you clearly understand your natural style and point you toward other approaches to expand your leadership skills. Rep. Chu celebrates 45th anniversary of the MBD Agency Wednesday, Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-CA) released a video recognizing the 45th anniversary of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). The MBDA has led federal government efforts to provide business support to over 5.8 million minority-owned businesses. “For nearly half a century, the Minority Business Development Agency has worked tirelessly to promote the growth and competitiveness of the minority business community.” said Rep. Chu. “Minority-owned businesses contribute to local economies and provide much needed jobs for Americans of all backgrounds and cultures.” Over the last five years

alone, the MBDA has helped businesses gain access to over $19 billion in contracts and capital, creating and retaining nearly 60,000 jobs. “As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the War on Poverty and strive to strengthen our global competitiveness, we look to our minority-owned businesses as the front lines of job creation, spurring economic growth and promoting wealth creation throughout our nation.” Chu continued. “The growth of America’s workforce will come from our nation’s rapidly growing minority populations and I am certain the MBDA will continue to foster strong minority-owned business for our nation to achieve its full potential.”

ley farms and Southern California homes have fallen to zero. Crops are dying, cities are running out of drinking water, and streams are running dry. “This drought is a stark reminder that we need to make the best use of our limited water resources,” notes Gatto. “Recycled water is cleaner than most of the water in our natural aquifers. It’s wasteful and inefficient to dump this water into the ocean when we could use it for a productive purpose.” Recycled water is already a popular option for many communities seeking new supplies of safe and inexpensive water. In 2009, 669,000 acre-feet of treated, municipal wastewater was beneficially reused in California, mostly for irrigation purposes, and 51 out of 58 counties developed or identified recycled-water projects in their water-plan updates. To ensure that homeowners and businesses aren’t economically harmed, Gatto’s bill specifically requires the Department of Housing and Community Development and the Building Standards Commission to consider the cost of various

recycled-water infrastructure and the estimated quantity of water savings from using recycled water. Once standards are adopted, cities with access to recycled water, or with plans to construct recycled-water facilities, will be required to adopt these mutually beneficial standards for all new construction. AB 2282 continues Gatto’s legislative efforts to address California’s historic water shortage. In 2011, the legislature passed Gatto’s AB 849, which reduced cities’ ability to opt out of passing graywater regulations, and in 2012, the Legislature passed Gatto’s bill AB 2230 requiring all new carwashes to use 60% recycled water by 2014. In 2012 and 2013, Gatto authored legislation to create CalConservice, a revolving loan fund for water-use efficiency retrofits. “This bill is about building more infrastructure,” says Gatto. “Single-family homes use about 60% of their water outside; if people could water their lawns and wash their cars with recycled water, there would be 60% more clean water available for consumption, crops, and bathtubs.”

RN’s welcome updated legislation to hold non-profit hospitals accountable on charity care The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United has welcomed the 2014 introduction of legislation to hold non-profit hospitals more accountable on meeting their charity care and community benefit obligations. AB 503, jointly authored by Assembly member Bob Wieckowski of Fremont and Assembly member Rob Bonta of Oakland, addresses what CNA calls a rampant abuse of what the hospitals report in how they provide charity care and community benefit programs in exchange for maintaining their tax exempt status. CNA/NNU is the sponsor of the bill. The Greenlining Institute and the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation are initial cosponsors. A similar bill last year narrowly fell short on the Assembly floor after ferocious lobbying by California’s wealthy hospital industry which has waged a heavy pressure campaign on legislators to avoid greater public transparency, responsibility and accountability in their

provision of charity care. With more than 800,000 additional Californians signed up for private insurance through Covered California, the Affordable Care Act’s state exchange, “it is more important than ever that California non-profit hospitals fulfill the obligation they have through taxpayer support to provide the appropriate level of charity care,” said CNA Co-President Deborah Burger, RN. “With the huge tax breaks these hospitals receive, the public has a right to expect good corporate citizenship and accountability, especially as our healthcare crisis continues to escalate and more of our state’s residents enter the health care system,” said Burger. A 2012 CNA report found that California nonprofits were accumulating nearly $2 billion a year in public subsidies, tax exempt benefits, beyond what they were returning in charity care – while rolling up record profits and paying scores of top executives pay packages in excess of $1 million a year. The California State

Auditor’s office has also expressed concern in two reports in recent years over the lack of consistent reporting requirements. AB 503 seeks more uniform standards in California. It would: • Clearly define what constitutes charity care which must be the direct provision of care to the uninsured or underinsured, not promotional activities, marketing, cost containment, or other activities more intended to generate profit. • Sets restrictions on the definition of “community benefit” programs. • Improve reporting requirements for greater public transparency in how hospitals are meeting their charity care and community benefit obligation. • Community representation, from underserved populations and a public health department, on each hospital or system’s community benefits planning committee. Children’s hospitals, county hospitals, other public facilities, and small rural hospitals are exempted.

Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library to open new early learning space The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration for its new Early Learning with Families (ELF) area on March 6, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The ELF area is located in the Children’s Department and features child friendly furniture and toys for children and their caregivers to use in the library. Families are invited to attend the ribbon cutting and stay afterwards to play and enjoy refreshments provided by the Friends of the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. “We are thrilled to open the Early Learning with Families space at the library”, said Acting Chil-

dren’s Librarian Diana Garcia. “Imaginative play is essential to the learning and development of young children and encourages language skills, exploration, social skills, physical skills and creativity. This innovative addition to the library will provide a new experience for our families when they visit the Children’s Department,” said Garcia. The Early Learning with Families area will be available to families during the library’s open hours. The equipment and toys, which include a play kitchen, a puppet theater, a lego activity table, a magnetic wall, a play carpet and toy cars, building

blocks, puzzles and other learning activities, will be made available on a rotating basis. This project was funded by the California State Library’s Early Learning with Families 2.0 Initiative to develop and expand early learning opportunities for children and families within the library. The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library is the city’s public library located at 318 South Ramona Avenue, Monterey Park, CA 91754. Library hours are: Sunday 1-5 p.m.; Monday & Tuesday 12-9 p.m.; Wednesday & Thursday 10 a.m.-6: p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.-1 p.m.; and closed on Saturday.

Canadian planes, alsocalled Super Scoopers, were used to prevent further damage in January’s Colby Fire in Glendora. The twin-jet powered aircraft has 8 tanks, can scoop water from rivers, lakes, or oceans at a rate of one ton per second, and can drop the water all at once or multiple times. Because landing to refill is not necessary for the BE200, it can alternatingly fly from fire to water source at fast speeds.

The state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as CalFire, and the U.S. Forest Service, as well as the counties of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara are discussing to lease the Be-200 air tanker from the IES for a 180-day fire season for $8 million or a yearly cost of $16 million. “We are ready to assist So. Cal. in providing a very affordable solution for year-round service. We can provide this service with the

state-of-art, purpose-built, multi-role and amphibious aerial firefighting Be-200 with complete flight crews, maintenance, and insurance which is managed by IES,” said Bagnard. Azusa City Councilman Angel Carrillo suggested for the state, the federal government and other Southern California counties to share the cost. Currently, the aircraft is waiting certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Huntington Library adds exciting new attractions By Greg Aragon The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens is one of my favorite cultural getaways in the Los Angeles area. It is renowned for its world-famous collection of historic paintings, manuscripts and sculptures - all housed in classic Beaux Arts structures. But in the past 12 months the 96-yr-old repository has added some exciting and expensive new touches to its sprawling 150 acres. The latest addition is the second phase of the $22 million Liu Fang Yuan Chinese Garden, which debuted two new pavilions and a rock grotto make on March 8. The newly completed Clear and Transcendent Pavilion serves as a lakeside performance space that will soon boast a large adjoining courtyard to be dubbed the Court of Assembled Worthies. The new Waveless Boat Pavilion will feature distinctive architecture, evoking a boat gliding across the water. Created thanks to a $1.5 mil-

lion grant from Andrew and Peggy Cherng (owners of the Panda Restaurant Group), this attraction will be one of the dramatic new focal points of the garden. The Rock Grotto, which got a $1 million gift from Wallis Annenberg and the Annenberg Foundation, is known as Lingering Clouds Peak. Visitors strolling through the grotto pass under a cascading waterfall. Water and rocks are essential features of a Chinese garden, representing nature’s yin and yang—the ever-changing and the eternal. Other features planned for the garden include a small gallery for displaying Chinese art, a poetry garden, a terraced court for penjing (a horticultural art similar to Japanese bonsai), and a hillside pavilion. The first phase of the garden opened in 2008. Another exciting new addition to the Huntington is the $60 million Education and Visitor Center, which broke ground last year. This project includes 43,000 sq-ft of educational facilities and visitors amenities, a 400-seat lecture hall, four classrooms, meeting rooms, an expand-

ed café and gift shop, and a 200-ft-long tunnel with 40,000 sq-ft of underground storage for the Huntington’s massive historical artifacts collection. The architect for the project, Stephen J. Farneth, founding principal of Architectural Resources Group (ARG), told me recently that the new five-building complex is intended to harmonize with the estate’s existing early 20th-century Beaux-Arts structures that were built in 1916 by architect Myron Hunt for railroad magnate and collector Henry E. Huntington. The new buildings will be highlighted by stucco, red clay tile roofs, bronze detailing, loggias, deep recessed openings with aluminum window and door systems, and trellises with precast concrete columns. The new Visitor’s Center will be surrounded by 6.5 acres of gardens, inspired by LA’s local Mediterranean climate, and the Huntington’s rich agricultural history. The gardens will feature a grove of olive trees at the main entry and thick flower beds to transition visitors from one area to another. The project is scheduled to

complete in early 2015. Besides big new projects, the museum also has it usual collection of masterpieces from around the world. One of my favorite pieces is the 53-pound Gutenberg Bible, printed in the 1450’s by Johann Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press. Gutenberg printed 170 first editions of the vellum-bound bible and today there are only about 12 left in the world and one of them is on display at the

Huntington. Other library highlights include a collection of early Shakespeare’s works, a copy of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales dating from around 1400, and handwritten notes from Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Walt Whitman and President George Washington. There are also paintings from British and French greats, such as Lawrence’s “Pinkie” and Gainsborough’s “The Blue Boy.” The Japanese Garden is

also worth a visit. Here one can sit peacefully beside an arched bridge, which spans a lily pond with brightly colored koi fish and is surrounded by towering bamboo. And near here, is a 12-acre Chinese garden, teeming with zen-filled nature. The Huntington is located at 1151 Oxford Rd. in San Marino, CA. Why Classic?

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. Keppel 61-47 loss to Alemany High ends season The Mark Keppel High girls’ basketball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday night with a 61-47 loss to visiting Alemany High in a CIF Southern Section Open Division playoff game. With the tournament being double-elimination, Keppel lost in the first round on Feb. 22 to host Serra High, 71-37. Kelli Kamida led the Aztecs in a losing effort with 20 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the floor, to go along with two rebounds. Teammate Sophia Song scored 11 points, hitting five of nine shots, and picked up three assists and one rebound, while Tammi Matsukiyo finished with eight points, shooting 4-for4 from the free throw line, while picking up seven rebounds and two assists. Following a very physical game, Keppel coach Joe

Kikuchi said his girls just weren’t able to fully compete with the size of the Alemany squad. “Those girls were just too big and too strong for us,” Kikuchi said. “(We) bounced back. But we just couldn’t get rebounds. They out-rebounded us by over double digits. They pretty much dominated the boards.” He added he is very proud of the way his team played this year. “They have nothing to be down about,” he said. “They had a great season. They had a great season not having our leader, our point guard Lauren (Saiki). They still ended up going 25-3, so it was a great season.” Alemany coach Bryan Camacho said his team played well getting the win. “I thought we did a

good job getting the ball inside,” Camacho said. “Defensively, we had to communicate and make sure we stayed balanced with those great shooters of Keppel. He added he admired the way the Aztecs performed on the court. “Keppel’s a great team,” Camacho said. “Great program, well coached. It was just a tough battle.” In addition, Kikuchi said he likes CIF’s new open division, but with some reservation. “I think open division is a great idea,” he said. “But it’s hard for anybody to select the right teams. I think it’s a good idea, but weren’t at full strength and we weren’t able to do well.” (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@beaconmedianews.com. Follow him via Twitter @segallanded.)

‘Heart Your Park’ program in Glendale The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has partnered with Macy’s, Inc. on Heart Your Park, a community donation program to benefit local parks across America from March 7 - 31. The store personnel at the Macy’s in the Glendale Galleria have selected Brand Park as the recipient of their in-store donations as part of the “Secret Garden” campaign. Customers will be able to make donations of $1 or more when making a purchase at the Macy’s store. A purchase is not necessary to make a donation and customers may request a form at the store that documents the donation for tax deductibility purposes. Additionally, Macy’s

will be matching the first $250,000 raised in total across all participating stores, through the program. The City may apply the donation as it sees fit to support the park. Brand Park is a 31-acre community gem nestled at the base of the Verdugo Mountains. Located on land donated by Don Juan Camarillo on a hill above Camarillo, St. John’s Seminary is normally closed to the public. But on one day every April, St. John’s Seminary throws open its front gates for a free, public Open House with tours conducted by seminarians and free refreshments in the seminary’s beautiful

This year’s Open House will be held Saturday, April 26, from 1-4 PM at St. John’s Seminary, located at 5012 Seminary Road, Camarillo, CA 93012, just east of the intersection of Lewis and Upland Roads. This year also marks the beginning of the Seminary’s 75th Anniversary celebration, to be held now through October of 2015.

Parish groups are encouraged to attend by car pool, bus or train to Camarillo train station as parking at St. John’s is limited. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWN-
