Two lucky turkeys get spa treatment and love over Thanksgiving Meet Anne and Jessica turkey, named for vegan beauties Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. Saved from the Southern California slaughter industry, they arrived at Karen Dawn’s house, were treated to a bath and blowdry (all on film at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=68qaX3ZoZek ) and plenty of love. They’ll be the guests of honor at the Thanksgiving feast -- at the table rather than on it. The only turkey on the table will be a bottle of Wild Turkey bourbon. Kids, and their parents, in Dawn’s Pacific Palisades (Los Angeles) neighborhood love meeting the turkeys. And folks everywhere enjoy the YouTube videos of their “spa treatment” including bath and blow-dry. This is Dawn’s sixth annual rescue. She says: “I do this as a fun way

to send a serious message. Most people would be unaware that most animal cruelty laws exempt farm animals and turkeys are not even covered under federal humane slaughter laws -- so their lives and deaths for our holiday celebration are unconscionably painful…. “But the main message is simply that turkey day is a lot more fun when the turkeys are alive and well.” After Thanksgiving,
Anne and Jessica will head to Animal Place, in Grass Valley Northern California to live out their lives as turkey ambassadors. Karen would love people to visit her Animal Place fundraising page. A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.
Letter to the Editor Send your letters to tmiller@beaconmedianews.com Dear Editor: A little more than a year from now, I expect screams of outrage may roll through Burbank. It will ignite area politics, enrage residents, terrify many who’ve bought homes in recent years, light up familiar activists and inspire new ones, all brandishing furious charges of corruption and government secrecy. Worse, I’m worried this wave of attention will come far too late to do anything productive. At a Nov. 14 meeting of Burbank’s City Council and the Airport Authority operating Bob Hope Airport, a council majority approved hiring a firm to study a “concept” for replacing the existing terminal, and installing up to 3 million sq. ft. of development on 58 acres next to the new terminal. The development includes up to 8,200 parking spaces, yet another hotel, and a variety of office and business spaces to be built over 10 to 15 years. The government agencies involved have NOT kept this secret. The airport did speed from what officials said was a blank slate awaiting public input, to renderings, square footage and landscaping in less time than I can sketch out a bathroom remodel. But the airport and the city went beyond what the law demands for notifying the public of official discussions getting underway. Still, at the Nov. 14 session, where the council could have slashed the 58 acre concept, but didn’t, the meeting was packed with staff, consultants, lawyers and elected officials. A handful of local business champions were
there, apparently just as silent cheerleaders. But only four or five Burbank residents not paid or elected to be there bothered to show up. And perhaps half of them were from that familiar band who speak at every public meeting and rant about every issue. My fear is the study now underway will suffer the same apathy. The experts will conclude, as they virtually always do, that by reducing the project’s size somewhat - which developers tailored their plan to anticipate - the impacts of a new terminal and 58 acres of development are a fair exchange for the vague promise of jobs, and can be easily fixed by shifting traffic lanes and tweaking signals. If the process continues as most do, consultants, staff and elected officials will also argue the project has public support because the Chamber of Commerce and business people they talk to privately love it, and the residents said little or nothing when they had the chance. Also as we’ve all seen countless times, I’m expecting that, when the project is finally approved, then we’ll finally see newspaper articles and hear discussion awakening Burbankers to the creature first unchained back in 2013. People will demand to know why it was kept secret and they weren’t told. But it wasn’t, and they were. Some ignoring current events may rely on Burbank’s “Measure B,” which prevents a new terminal from being built without voter approval. That requires pretending Burbank’s voter
turnout has not been falling since the 90s. And any election watcher can tell you the precincts near the airport have some of the worst voter turnout numbers in the city! Project supporters will need only invest in goosing the already more-active neighborhoods that won’t suffer the project’s impacts directly: places like the Rancho and hillsides. It also means assuming that, if a Measure B vote did fail, thus stopping a terminal project that I believe has some positives, eliminating the chance of any replacement terminal virtually in perpetuity is in Burbank’s best interest. No matter where you stand on the project, not paying attention now invites war later, and in the worst possible circumstances, alongside 2015’s council campaigns and elections. That means a few hot weeks of charges and claims, campaign war chests, anonymous mailers, and all the hallmarks of Burbank’s ugliest battles. Moreover, even if the new terminal were voted down, the 58 acre development next door could proceed. I urge Burbank residents to learn about the EIR process underway. Visit web sites for the city and the airport to sign up for notices of every public meeting, and when the EIR process solicits public comment and questions, participate! Help point the projects where you want them headed today, instead of trying to stop them or save them at the last minute in 2015. Sincerely, Signed/ Will Rogers

San Gabriel Valley based Nazee Rofagha, D.C. has her finger on the pulse of neurological rehabilitation Improving the health and well-being of her patients for more than 18 years, San Gabriel Valley based Dr. Nazee Rofagha, Doctor of Chiropractic, remains at the forefront of her field. In addition to practicing complete traditional chiropractic care, Rofagha incorporates a “no boundaries” mindset in her work and is one of the few doctors in the area that is trained to perform Neurological Rehabilitation, an emerging new collection of non-invasive techniques designed to evaluate and rehabilitate nerves in the body. Currently, Dr. Rofagha is completing the third of the three Modules of Quantum Neurology® Rehabilitation Training. Developed by Dr. George Gonzalez, DC, QN, this advanced healing concept uses the patient’s own Nervous System to guide their rehabilitation. Also trained and certified in NRCT™ (Neurological Relief Centers Technique), Dr. Rofagha, remains committed to seeking out new, forwardthinking non-invasive techniques such as these to further help her patients suffering from chronic pain, injuries and conditions. Though each body is different, when these progressive practices work, the results are often described by patients as miraculous and immediate. “I was at my wits end because the constant pain that traveled throughout my body for decades was becoming unbearable,” said Karen Singer, a 20 plus year Fibromyalgia sufferer who recently visited Dr. Rofagha for testing and therapy that included specialized techniques that stimulate the Nervous System, Infrared Light Therapy and Vibration Therapy. The change happened when, through Dr. Rofagha’s efforts, her neck muscle got stronger. “The intensity of the pain in my back went from a level seven to a three within 15 minutes. For the first time in years, I left a doctor’s office with less pain and more hope.” These non-intrusive techniques relieve stress on the entire spinal cord with gentle pressure, allowing practitioners, such as Dr. Rofagha, to test how effi-
ciently the nerves are controlling a patient’s muscles, senses, organs and sensation of skin. The sensations control what a person feels, including pain. The goal is to improve the quality of information being sent along the entire path of the nervous system. Once the problem areas are determined, the restoration of accurate communication of the nerve ensues. This type of care makes the body more aware of what is not functioning correctly and facilitates the nerves to reprogram themselves so that the body can heal quickly and naturally. “I strive to identify the root of my patients problems and what techniques they respond to, not only focusing on the symptoms,” said Dr. Rofagha who works with people with a wide range of mildto-debilitating conditions including Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, MiVisit us at: graines, Anxiety, Fatigue, ChickensWelcome.com Insomnia, ALHAMBRA Reflex DENTAL Sympa100 South First Street more thetic Dystrophy and Alhambra, CA 91801 as well as Neuropathy and people suffering from nerve related pain such as pain radiation, tingling and throbbing sensations which are collectively referred to as a neurological condition. “I respect what science and medicine can do but sometimes it is not enough. People realize they have a choice now, with all of the emerging techniques breaking ground in pain management and neurological rehabilitation, which is exciting. Patients are optimistic, after exhausting traditional remedies and medicine, that there is something that can still be done to potentially relieve their chronic pain and discomfort.” Dr. Rofagha’s interest in progressive non-invasive healing techniques was born years ago from her own frustration and desire to help alleviate some of her mother’s life-altering pain. It has since grown into a passion to help as many people as possible. Currently patients throughout the San Gabriel Valley, San Fernando Valley and Greater Los Angeles travel to Rofagha’s Pasadena office for this one-of-a-kindtreatment. A long-standing na-
tional board-certified chiropractor licensed by the State of California Board of Chiropractic Examiners and Neurological Rehabilitation Specialist, Dr. Rofagha and the family Chiropractic Wellness Center is located at 1017 South Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena. But there’s a natural connection between me and DreamWorks. I don't know if you know this, but my ears were one of the inspirations for “Shrek.” (Laughter.) That's true. True story. We’ve got some folks here who are fighting for the people of Southern California every single day and I just want to acknowledge them. We've got the Mayor of Glendale, Dave Weaver. (Applause.) We've got three of your outstanding members of Congress -- Brad Sherman, Adam Schiff, Karen Bass. They are all doing a great job. (Applause.) And I’ve come here today because this is one of America’s economic engines. Not just DreamWorks, but this whole cluster of companies that generations have grown up knowing -- Disney and Warner and Universal and others. When you think about it, what finance is to New York, what the auto industry is to the Midwest, what technology is to Northern California, entertainment is to this part of the country. Entertainment is one of America’s biggest exports. And every day, you sell a product that’s made in America to the rest of the world. Every time somebody buys movie tickets, or DVDs, or distribution rights to a film, some of that money goes back to the local economy right here. Entertainment is one of the bright spots of our economy. The gap between what we can do and what other countries can do is enormous. AUDIENCE MEMBER: Woo! THE PRESIDENT: Yes, that’s worth cheering for. (Applause.) And that means that we’ve got to do what it takes to make sure that this industry, and every great American industry, keeps that competitive edge so that more folks can find career paths like many of you have, and get good middle-class jobs that allow you to support a family and get ahead. And, yes, we decided to fix a broken health care system. (Applause.) And it’s interesting -- I was talking to some of the studio execs here, and I said, look, the rollout of the new
health care marketplace was rough and nobody was more frustrated about the problems with our website than I am. And yet, here in Southern California and here across this state, there are thousands of people every single day who are getting health care for the first time -- for the first time -- because of this. (Applause.) And, by the way, the website is continually working better, so check it out. (Laughter.) But as a country, we're now poised to gain health coverage for millions of Americans, starting on January 1st, and that includes more than 350,000 here in California who have already signed up. And thanks in part to the Affordable Care Act, health care costs are growing at the slowest rate in 50 years. Employer-based health care costs are growing at about one-third the rate of a decade ago. And that means that if the studios here or your employers aren't having to spend as much on health care, they can hire more folks and reinvest more in the business, and come up with those cool technologies that -- I don’t exactly understand how they work, but -- (laughter) -were really neat to look at. (Laughter.) Instead of rooting for failure, or refighting old battles, Republicans in Congress need to work with us to improve those things about the Affordable Care Act that aren't working as well as they should, and implement policies to strengthen the middle class and create jobs. (Applause.) We are going to continue to implement the health care law. The product is good. People want it. And we should not live in a country where people are going bankrupt just because they get sick. And anybody who is going to keep on pushing against that, they will meet my resistance, because I am willing to fix any problems that there are, but I'm not going to abandon people to make sure that they've got health insurance in this country. That is not something we're going to do. (Applause.) And the good news is, as I said, thousands of Californians are already signing up. I read a really power-
ful story over the weekend I just want to mention about uninsured folks in Kentucky who are signing up in droves in one of the poorest counties in the country. Some of them can't imagine what having health insurance would be like. And you read these stories and you realize how important it is for folks in Kentucky -- a state, by the way, that did not vote for me -- (laughter) -- and if Kentucky can do it, than every state should be able to do it. We should be able to expand Medicaid all across the country. There are millions of people who, right now, even under the law, may not get health care that they deserve because their governors have refused to do it just for political reasons -- expanding Medicaid. Fortunately, California, obviously, is not one of them. But this is a fight that we're going to keep fighting, because it's worth fighting. And that's what Mellody referred to. It's true. I'm not an ideological guy, but there are some things I really believe in. And part of what I believe in is that the essence of this country, what makes this place special, is this idea that Hollywood is glorified and held up, but I actually think it’s true that here, more than anyplace else, no matter what you look like, where you come from, what your last name is, who you love, you should be able to make it if you're willing to work hard. That's what I believe. (Applause.) And there’s certain values that make that a reality. I have my critics, obviously, but since were here in Hollywood, I want to think about something that the late, great Chicago film critic, Robert [Roger] Ebert said -- and I was fortunate to get to know Roger Ebert and was always inspired by how he handled some really tough stuff. “Kindness,” he wrote, “covers all of my political beliefs.” Kindness covers all of my political beliefs. So, thank you, DreamWorks, for what you do. (Applause.) Thank you, Jeffrey, for your hospitality. God bless you. God bless America. (Applause.) Can't wait to see your next movie. (Applause.)

Cozy in Carlsbad By Greg Aragon Carlsbad is a classic California beach town, oozing with laid back charm, beautiful ocean vistas, and lonely beaches. And I as found out recently, the village also boasts luxurious boutique lodgings such as the West Inn & Suites, where a friend and I escaped for the night. Located a couple blocks from the beach, the hotel is a perfect home-base when visiting Carlsbad. It not only has two gourmet restaurants on-site, a pool and fitness center, free high-speed Internet, modern, comfortable rooms and ocean breezes, but also offers free shuttles to nearby shopping and attractions. One of my favorite attractions is Carlsbad Beach, where we took the hotel shuttle as soon as we unpacked. Located below rocky, coastal bluffs, the beach is beautifully secluded and during this time of year, it is practically deserted, which can make for
romantic strolls. At the top of the bluffs, there is a path where joggers and dog walkers like to take advantage of the spectacular views. After watching the sun set on Carlsbad Beach, we headed back to the hotel to relax before dinner. With a self-described “Casa Blanca meets Cape Cod” feel, the West Inn & Suites features 86 modern and stylish rooms with refrigerator and microwaves, coffee makers, Egyptian cotton linen and terry, large flat screen TV’s, office and lounge amenities and more. For dinner we experienced Bistro West (www. bistrowest.com), one of two signature hotel restaurants. Like its sister restaurant, West Steak and Seafood, Bistro West serves many fresh ingredients from their own West Farm located a couple miles away. Bistro West has a casual elegant feel while serving up original pastas, pizzas, burgers and salads, as well as intricate and tasty entrees. Our meal began with Bistro Ahi Tartar with sesame soy chili sauce, avocado mango salsa, sour cream and seaweed salad. We then shared
a large Greek salad with Romaine lettuce, olives, red onions, feta cheese, anchovies and red wine vinaigrette. For the main course I enjoyed super tender braised short rib, with mashed potatoes, port wine sauce and sautéed mixed veggies. My friend devoured seafood tortellini with shrimps, scallops and salmon filling, Maine Lobster, peas, zucchini and carrots in sage butter. While dining we sipped California
wine and looked back on a wonderful escape. After dinner we took the free hotel shuttle to nearby Carlsbad Village and listed to live music at O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub, where drank Guinness beers and sat outside next to a giant fire pit. In the morning we walked from our 2nd story suite to the hotel’s extensive, complimentary breakfast buffet. The West Inn & Suites
is located at 4970 Avenida Encinas, Carlsbad, CA 92008. The hotel is minutes from Legoland California Resort, the Carlsbad Flower Fields and Carlsbad Premium Outlets, and within a short drive of SeaWorld and San Diego Zoo. The hotel is currently offering stay packages such as the LEGOLAND Fun, which includes admission to the park for one adult and one child, complimentary
shuttle service to and from LEGOLAND, and late check-out. Another special is the Je T’aime - Te Amo I Love You Package, which features premier accommodations, chocolate dipped fruit, rose petals with turndown, a romantic movie and late checkout. For more information and these packages and on staying at West Inn & Suites, call 66-4319378 or visit: www.westinnandsuites.com.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.
Our CPAP Circle of Care® program
was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.
Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance
Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).
Skeptical?
So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Our proprietary systems automate the flow of documentation keeping referring doctors completely informed about their patients’ progress and ensure physicians have the documentation they need for follow-up consultations with their patients.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.
