Arcadia Mayor Gary Kovacic and former Mayor John Wuo have been picked by voters for two open seats in the City Council election Tuesday night. While the results are preliminary the win was significant over challengers. Kovacic and Wuo challenged former school board member Mary Dougherty, who came in third place, retired businessman Sho Tay and real estate specialist Henry Nunez. Voters approved Measure D, which extends a hotel room tax .

Derby Day 5K Walk and Run Attracts Record Crowd

Santa Anitaās 18th annual Derby Day 5K Walk and Run attracted a record 5,683 participants Saturday morning, setting the stage for a potentially huge day at The Great Race Place which will present the 75th running of the Grade I, $750,000 Santa Anita Derby later in the afternoon. āWe sure hope this is a precursor to a fabulous day,ā said Santa Anita Vice President of Sales and Marketing Chris Quinn. āThis is the best turnout weāve ever had for this event and we had people of all agesāfrom 3 and 4-year-old kids, to people in their seventies. to have a great race-day as well.ā The Santa Anita Derby Day 5K benefits several charities and worthy causes, including Pasadena-based AbilityFirst, the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), the Arcadia High School Athletic Boosters Club, the Arcadia Historical Museum and Arcadia Explorer Scouts. Participants arrived early and competition got underway at 8 a.m. over a course that took runners and walkers to the world-renowned Los Angels County Arboretum and afforded all a glimpse
There is a āChanging of the Guardā at Sierra Madre City council. Longtime councilperson Mary Ann MacGillivray lost her reelection bid to relative newcomers. Chris Koerber was voted in for former councilperson Joe Moscaās remaining two years . John Harabedian and John Capoccia were elected for the two 4-year seats on the Council. Measure 12-1, the extension of the UUT to pay for public safety was defeated, 61% to 39% . Richard Mays and Nancy Shollenberger, both running unopposed, will serve as City Treasurer and City Clerk for the next four years.
