On Monday morning Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Congressman Adam Schiff (DBurbank) announced that Congress has included $5 million in FY 2015 funding bill, also known as the CROmnibus, for a West Coast Earthquake Early Warning System, the first time Congress
has ever provided funding specifically for the system. A limited system developed by Caltech, UC-Berkeley and University of Washington, in conjunction with the United State Geological Survey (USGS), has already been deployed and has proven that the early warning technology is

He was America’s best finisher in the 5000 meter race at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and while on a rescue mission the B-24 Liberator plane he was flying in crashed

into the Pacific Ocean where he drifted for 47 days in a life raft, only to be captured and brutally tortured by the Japanese for the next two years. At the end of the war he returned to Torrance as an American hero. In 1949 Louis attended a crusade led by evangelist Billy Graham and became a born-again Christian; forgiving his captors who so brutally tortured him as a prisoner of war. He became an inspirational speaker, established the Victory Boys Camp and traveled
the world teaching forgiveness and his Christian beliefs. The City of Torrance celebrates the 97 year long life of Torrance High School and USC track star, Olympian, World War II prisoner of war and inspirational speaker Louis Zamperini. Raised in Torrance, his heart never wandered far from the city and people he loved and supported throughout his life. As an sidebar, The Tournament of Roses honors the memory of Grand Marshal Louis Zamperini, with Mr. Zamperini’s children and their spouses who will ride a 1936 Packard Standard Eight. “This chic vehicle has a very interesting history, as less than ten of them were produced. This particular vehicle was exported to Russia in the 1930’s as a gift to Joseph Stalin, ” according to the TOR.

Stalin, of course, was one of the most powerful and murderous dictators in history, Stalin was the supreme ruler of the Soviet Union for a quarter of a century. His regime of terror caused the death and suffering of tens of millions, but he also oversaw the war machine that played a key role in
the defeat of Nazism. One can only wonder what Louis Zamperini might have said about the choice of said car to transport his family in his memory on New Year’s Day. Knowing Zamperini’s history, he would have forgiven even Stalin for his atrocities.

Mayfield Students Living Actions, Not Words Madeleine Coppersmith (’16) and Pia Montanez (’17) are truly living Actions Not Words. Both students were selected as ABC’s Channel 7’s “Cool Kids.” Remarkable young men and women between the ages of 14–18 are nominated by the community and selected by ABC for this honor. For almost two years, Madeleine Coppersmith and Pia Montanez have been members of Villa Esperanza’s Service and Social club (SaS). After school, when Madeleine is not practicing soccer or swim and Pia is not fine-tuning her acting skills in Theatre Conservatory, they spend their free time working with SaS and helping mentally challenged seniors. As Madeleine and Pia shared with ABC’s Danny Romero, they receive joy from helping others,
but it is the joy they see in others that is the most rewarding. Mayfield Senior School Alumnus and 2013 Rose Queen, Vanessa Manjarrez (’13), started SaS in 2013. The program includes activities, arts, crafts, exercise and music. “To see our clients accomplish tasks and learn new skills is one of the things I enjoy most,” said Coppersmith. It is the bond these two young women share with those they help that drives them to continue their service. Montanez said, “We look forward to seeing them and knowing that they look forward to seeing us, is truly rewarding.” These two are truly living Mayfield Senior Schools’ motto of Actions Not Words. The segment is scheduled to air on Jan. 25th on ABC 7, at 4pm.

He is the son of director Bonnie Lythgoe, who also directed last year’s Panto at the Pasadena Playhouse’s Aladdin and His Winter Wish in collaboration with choreographer Spencer Liff (Emmy nominee “So You Think You Can Dance”)
and musical director Michael Orland (“American Idol”), all of whom have returned this year to produce another piece of family entertainment. The producers have cast gifted actors and dancers – kids and adults --, who not only know how to engage the (younger) audience, but also work around technical difficulties so that they almost go unnoticed; and even include unintended cell phone rings playfully into their routines. Besides the musically talented protagonists, Tamyra Gray as the good fairy stands out with her performances of Mariah Carey’s “Hero” and the show’s finale. Foundations Award $728,000 to Support Hillsides Work with Transition Age Youth Hillsides has raised $728,000 in grant awards this year to help put hundreds of transition-aged youth in Los Angeles County on the path to independence. The foundations that provided support in 2014 were The Angell Foundation, Annenberg Foundation, Bank of the West, California Community Foundation, The Carl and Roberta Deutsch Foundation, Max Factor Family Foundation, The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, RGK Foundation, The Sidney Stern Memorial Trust, TJX Foundation, and The TK Foundation. Hillsides serves hundreds of disadvantaged youth 16-25 years of age through the Youth Moving On (YMO) program. The program provides hous-
ing and supportive services to transition age youth, particularly those transitioning from the foster care and juvenile justice systems. YMO operates through two main components: a supportive housing program that serves about 45 youth each year and the Peer Resource Center, a drop-in center in Pasadena where over 500 transition-aged youth seek assistance with housing, health services, employment and more. Demand for service continues to grow. “The Peer Resource Center tapped into the tremendous needs of transition-aged youth, particularly those who are trying to move from the foster care and probation systems to independence,” said.

comprehensive early earthquake warning coverage throughout earthquake prone regions of the West Coast. “An earthquake early-warning system is essential to save lives, reduce property damage and protect critical infrastructure. This five million dollar federal investment is a down payment on building an integrated, statewide system,” said Senator Feinstein. “These federal dollars are sorely needed, but more funding is still necessary to complete the system. While the state and private sector must contribute their fair share, I will continue to work with West Coast senators and representatives to prioritize federal funds for this life-saving project. We must get it done before the next major earthquake strikes.” “It’s absolutely critical that the West Coast implement and build out an earthquake early warning system to give us a heads up before the ‘big one’ hits, so we can save lives and protect infrastructure,” said Congressman Schiff. “This funding will help build out additional stations, speed up the ShakeAlert system, and make it more reliable in our highest priority areas - including Los Angeles and the Bay Area - and those critical few seconds or a minute of warning will allow people to seek cover,
automatically slow or stop trains, and pause surgeries. This first phase of funding will allow the work to begin expanding the system, and we will continue to work to secure future funding along with our other federal, state and local partners.” “We at Caltech applaud Congress for approving the impactful initial funding for an earthquake early warning system,” said Thomas F. Rosenbaum, president of the California Institute of Technology. “This vital step toward implementation wouldn’t be possible without the leadership of the California congressional delegation.” Earlier this year, Schiff led a group of 25 Members from California, Washington and Oregon in organizing a request that the committee fund an early earthquake warning system. Schiff s letter requested additional funding for the Earthquake Hazards Program in USGS to kickstart the process of building out the early warning system so we can be ready for the next big quake. Senator. Feinstein was critical in securing the language in the Senate -Appropriations bill. The text in the bill reads: Funding for Natural Hazards programs includes $59,503,000 for earthquake hazards, of which $5,000,000 is provided to transition the earthquake early warning demonstration project into an operational capability on the West Coast. A critical component of the earthquake early warning system is maintaining the existing real-time broadband and strong motion seismic networks along with geodetic monitoring networks. As the earthquake early warning system is developed, USGS is directed to collaborate with universities, companies and other Federal agencies with expertise and existing digital seismic observing networks to continue precise observation of critical fault locations.
