A special memorial was held Wednesday at Arcadia Performing Arts Center for Arcadia Firefighter Mike Herdman, who died as a result of a fall while camping outside Fillmore recently. Hundreds of firefighters, family friends and dignitaries and police officers attended the celebration of the firefighter/paramedic’s life Wednesday morning to remember Michael Phillip Herman, who was born in 1977. The capacity crowd which included city council members and former police chief Dave Hinig as well as firefighters from all over the southland who remembered firefighter Herdman for not only a wonderful and generous spirit but one of great playfulness on and off duty. The display of flowers and surfboard plus the everpresent racing bicycle stood to the right of the flag draped coffin as friends remembered the tests of endurance he would challenge his brothers, regularly. But most of all, each speaker told of the love of his life, his 6-year-old daughter Sienna. We was devoted to her

were right. Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner whose remarkable story of survival as a prisoner of war in World War II gained new attention in 2010 with the publication of a best-selling biography by Laura Hillenbrand, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 97.
A statement released by his family said he had been suffering from pneumonia. In May Zamperini was announced as the Grand Marshal for the 2015 Tournament of Roses, themed “Inspiring Stories.” Zamperini, age 97, was Please see page 2
