Boys & Girls Club of Cypress and Darden Restaurants Partner to Advance Academic Success Boys & Girls Club of Cypress has been selected to receive a $1,000 grant as part of the Restaurant Community Grants program from the Darden Restaurants Foundation, Inc., the charitable arm of Darden Restaurants. The grants program, now in its fourth year, empowers each restaurant in the Darden family of brands to help award a $1,000 grant to support local community programs. The donation will help the Boys & Girls Club of Cypress to provide afterschool homework help, mentoring and enrichment opportunities for Club members. Darden’s Red Lobster, Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze, Seasons 52, The Capital Grille, Eddie V’s and Yard House brands participated in the program. Many restaurants and brands worked together to award one nonprofit organization with a larger grant and make a greater impact in their community. Nonprofits receiving grants support one of Darden’s three key focus areas: education, preservation of natural resources and hunger relief. In addition to the generous $1,000 donation the Club will be receiving, the Boys & Girls Club of Cypress has received donations throughout the year from general manager Tanya Bullard of Olive Garden #1220 in Cypress, CA. Olive Garden has provided food for various Club celebrations and will be donating food when the Club hosts other Boys & Girls Clubs for a professional association meeting later this month. The food is always a big hit with all who attend Club events. The financial support of the community helps the Club serve the families in the community, regardless of their ability to pay. Every day after school the Club picks up children from school, provides them with a snack,

A Ragtime Weekend!

The Vaudville Duo of Evans & Rogers - Courtesy of Orange County Ragtime Society

The Orange County Ragtime Society's first meeting of 2015 will feature a salute to Black History Month, and a celebration of the many ragtime-era composers and pianists whose birthday month is February. Join us at Steamers for a fun-filled Saturday matinee! Ragtime never really died – it just dissolved into the American musical underground for a decade or two, then began to bubble to the surface again. Ragtime music repeatedly enjoyed renewed popularity in a series of revivals beginning in the early 1940s and culminating in an explosion in the early 1970s, led by interest in black history in general and, in particular, Scott Joplin, whose music was being lionized by academia while

also being featured in the 1973 Hollywood movie “The Sting.” During this period, from the 1950s on, Ragtime societies and annual festivals sprung up across America and even around the world, celebrating this wonderful music by keeping it alive through continuous live performance, comparison, discussion and analysis as well as the composition of new Ragtime pieces for piano, band and voice. The formation of RagFest in 2000, and of the Orange County Ragtime Society a year later, typify this love of Ragtime music and are a response to the desire to enjoy, celebrate and preserve the joys of this unique and special American musical art form. Discovery Cube Celebrates National Engineer’s Week with Exhibits, NASA Guest Speaker and Egg-Drop Competition Future engineers will learn about the principles of S.T.E.M. education during this interactive week. Aspiring engineers are invited to learn and experiment at Discovery Cube Orange County and Discovery Cube Los Angeles between February 21 and March 1, 2015. The Cube is celebrating National Engineer’s Week with a lineup of friendly competitions, hands-on activities, and a special guest speaker from NASA to engage young minds in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The week begins on Saturday, February 21 with hands-on activities that allow guests to put their engineering talents to the test. Guests will experiment and compete for prizes in daily parachute drops, learn about physics, electrical engineering, and participate in the annual Egg Drop Competition during this weeklong workshop. Activities include: -Parachute Drop: Build and test a parachute, daily prizes awarded for the longest “hangtime” -Mini Monoliths: Strategically stack as many blocks as possible to build the tallest tower -Snap Circuit Building: Interactive electrical engineering table top that teaches about series and parallel circuits. -Forces & Motion Stage Show: A game show style presentation teaches guests about the basic physics of forces and motion in a simplified demonstration relating to Newton’s First Law of Motion. Guests are also invited to join the annual Egg Drop Competition and enjoy a special presentation by NASA Ambassador, Richard Stember, on Saturday, February 28 at Discovery Cube OC and Sunday, March 1 at Discovery Cube LA. Guests who

participate in the thrilling Egg Drop Competition must create an “ETV” (egg transport vehicle) to protect an egg as it drops 20 feet to the ground. Prizes will be awarded to the builders of the three devices with the lightest weight, least amount of materials, and a surviving egg. Doors open to the public February 21, and Engineer’s Week is included in general admission to Discovery Cube OC and Discovery Cube LA. Tickets can be bought at Discovery Cube or online at www.discoverycube. org. Prices are as follows: adult ($16.95), senior ($12.95), and children 3-14 ($12.95). Discovery Cube OC and Discovery Cube LA are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Currently, Discovery Cube LA has a special admission price of $10.00 for any guest. The Discovery Science Foundation serves as the program-development, marketing and fundraising arm for hands-on science learning museums in Orange County and Los Angeles. Established in 1989, the original non-profit Taco Bell Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, now renamed Discovery Cube Orange County, presented by Taco Bell, continues to inspire and educate millions of young minds through engaging science based programs and exhibits. In 2012, the Center was named one of the ten “Most Trusted Brands” in Orange County and in 2013 was awarded the National Medal of Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. In November 2014, Discovery Cube Los Angeles, a second museum offering an exhibit and program mix unique to Los Angeles, opened in the Hansen Dam Recreational Area of the San Fernando Valley.
