Nutritious school lunch ideas for kids

No two children are the same, but many youngsters share a number of similarities. Few young children enjoy going to bed on time, and many can’t resist a good trampoline. Kids also have a reputation for being picky eaters, which can be challenging for parents tasked with picking and preparing school lunches.

When dining at home, parents know which foods their kids eat and which they push around their plates in the hopes they won’t have to consume them. School lunch is a different scenario altogether, as parents are not around to ensure their youngsters eat a full and nutritious meal. Kids who are picky eaters may not eat any lunch at all. Parents who want to ensure their children get the nutrition they need to do well in school can consider the following school lunch ideas.

• Make-your-own sandwich: Kids may be more likely to eat a full lunch if they get to put it together themselves. Parents can put all the elements of a tasty sandwich into youngsters’ lunch boxes, but let kids assemble the meal themselves. Sandwiches are not necessarily the healthiest midday meal, but they are much more nutritious when parents pack whole grain bread, tomatoes, lettuce, and low-sodium deli meat in students’ lunch boxes. If a doit-yourself sandwich is a nonstarter, consider a DIY taco lunch complete with whole grain tortillas.

• Burrito bowl: A burrito bowl with kid-friendly yet nutritious ingredients is another great school lunch option. Red beans are a good source of fiber and the Harvard Medical School notes

all beans are rich in potassium. Fiber is filling, so a burrito bowl that includes fiber-rich ingredients, including red beans but also quinoa or brown rice, can help students avoid late-day hunger pangs that can compromise how they feel and perform in the classroom. Burrito bowls are so tasty that kids may not even realize Mom and Dad have snuck some healthy foods like vegetables into their midday meal.

• Parfait: Parfait has all the looks of a tasty dessert without the pitfalls of ice cream and other treats. The nutritional value of parfait depends on the ingredients Mom and Dad choose to include. Protein-rich Greek yogurt paired with some fruit and granola makes for a filling and tasty meal that’s also loaded with vitamins,

minerals and fiber. An insulated and airtight lunch box packed with ice packs can ensure the parfait is still cool come lunchtime.

• Pasta salad: Kids tend to be especially fond of pasta, and parents can use that

affinity to their advantage when planning school lunches. A whole-wheat pasta salad with some cherry tomatoes and diced broccoli makes for a nutrient-rich lunch that kids can enjoy. If broccoli figures to raise youngsters’ ire, consider a

nutritious substitute, such as shaved cucumber or zucchini.
School lunches can be nutritious and still make kids excited to eat their midday meal away from home.

Getting students excited about a new school year

A new school year presents a wealth of opportunities for students. At the dawn of a new school year, students have a chance to further their academic careers, student-athletes may be given a shot at making a team or moving up to varsity, and extracurriculars provide a chance for personal growth outside the classroom.

Despite all that a new school year represents, students may need a little extra motivation to get excited about going back to campus once summer winds down. A relaxing and largely obligation-free summer vacation can be tough to give up, as can mornings without alarm clocks. Parents recognize that kids might not be enthusiastic about the return of early mornings and sessions in the classroom. In such instances, parents can try the following strategies to get kids excited about a new school year.

• Make the first day special. First days can be challenging regardless of a person’s age. Professionals with years of experience in their field still feel first-day jitters when they begin a new job, so youngsters can be excused if what seems like a lack of excitement is really just nervousness about a new school year. Parents can calm those nerves by doing something to make the first day special. Skip the standard cereal and prepare a homecooked breakfast or let kids buy lunch at the school cafeteria instead of packing a PB&J in their lunchbox. A little something special on the first day can go a long way toward getting kids excited about going back to school.

• Emphasize new subjects. As children advance through school, they’re typically exposed to more engaging subjects or challenged in ways that helps

them build on previous years’ work. Emphasizing new subjects or opportunities can increase kids’ excitement to get back in the school year swing of things. If a youngster likes playing an instrument, emphasize how the new school year is an opportunity to get better, play alongside other students and take a talent to new heights. If students are old enough to take subjects they’ve long been interested in, such as a foreign language, make a point to emphasize how that opportunity has finally arrived.

• Create a school calendar. Schools typically make their yearly schedules available prior to the first day of school. Parents can peruse those schedules alongside their children and make a calendar noting special days. Mark down field trips, special events involving parents and students, school perfor-

mances where kids get to act or sing on stage, and other notable moments during the school year. Kids are bound to grow more excited about a new year when they see a year’s worth of fun events marked down on a calendar.

• Host a late summer get-together with friends.

A late-summer pool party or play date with various friends can remind youngsters that they’re about to see their friends every day. That might be enough to make young students jump out of bed on the first day of school.

Students might be less than excited about the end of summer vacation and the dawn of a new school year. But there’s much parents can do to get kids excited about going back to school.

Beyond Wrestling puts on a spectacle with ‘Americanrana ’25’ at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet

The past few years have been an amazing time to be a pro wrestling fan. Major promotions like World Wrestling Entertainment, All Elite Wrestling, and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling are giving the industry more attention.

This has also helped the independent side as well with smaller promotions such as Beyond Wrestling. “Wrestling Open RI” events that take place at Rhodes-on-thePawtuxet every Monday night. Their major extravaganza Americanrana ‘25 is going down on August 29 at 8 p.m.

I had a talk with Beyond Wrestling owner and operator Drew Cordeiro ahead of the festivities.

Rob Duguay: Americanrana ‘25 is celebrating 12 years since Beyond Wrestling’s first edition of the event at Fete Music Hall in Providence, so what would you say is your proudest accomplishment with this promotion so far?

Drew Cordeiro: There’s more than 100 different wrestlers we’ve worked with over the years who have gone on to earn contracts with WWE and AEW. I would say that there’s probably at least 20 where you can pinpoint the trajectory of their careers changing, specifically for competing at a Beyond Wrestling event.

RD: That’s awesome. Speaking of some of those wrestlers, you have a pretty stacked card with the likes of Shotzi Blackheart, Matt Cardona, Kris Statlander and Timothy Thatcher among others. If you had to pick the premier match that’s taking place at Americanrana, which one would it be?

DC: This is what makes Americanrana, and especially our relationship with Rhodeson-the-Pawtuxet through our “Wrestling Open RI” event unique. The premier match is going to be between Bobby Orlando and Bryce Donovan, who are former tag team partners. Bryce has signed on to WWE through their WWE ID program, so he has a WWE contract, but it’s not exclusive in a way that allows him to compete for independent wrestling organizations. He is the Wrestling Open Champion, and for Bobby,

his former partner, to be challenging for the title, I think it’s the first time since they were training together at Create A Pro (in Long Island) that they’ve had a match against each other. Also, the two of them alongside Max Caster, who is currently in AEW, all came up together as a trio called the “Shook Crew”.

With all the history and for all the fans who follow “Wrestling Open RI” every Monday night, I think that far and away to have that match as a title match and everything else involved in it makes it the premier match. It’s kind of an interesting approach where we got these big stars that are coming in to help draw attention to the organization, I don’t want to say in a supporting role, but maybe not in the featured match.

RD: What would you say is the most stressful part about independently putting together a pro wrestling event and what would you say is the most rewarding part? You don’t really have any major financial backing with this, you’re doing this on your own in a DIY way.

our current iteration, is two-pronged.

DC: The stressful part is that wrestling has changed so much where on any night you can turn on the television now and there’s wrestling available. It’s stressful to figure out the type of wrestling we want to provide that makes for a worthwhile experience at a value for the kinds of fans that we’re trying to cultivate and attract to our shows. Are we going to hit the mark, or are we going to miss the target? There’s always that uncertainty until the show itself happens. You never really know, you can always plan it out with different ideas based on experience and knowhow, but it’s always stressful until the door opens. I would say that the most rewarding part, especially with

On a personal level, I grew up in Rhode Island, and with Beyond Wrestling, I always wanted to bring the type of wrestling that I liked back to Rhode Island. Independent wrestling in New England used to be very much focused on just getting wrestlers to WWE, and I always thought that there’s so many different styles of wrestling with so many different facets and approaches. Ironically enough, the thing that’s been the most rewarding is that since WWE introduced the WWE ID program, of the 19 wrestlers that were signed to the first class in October of last year, seven of them came from our “Wrestling Open” organization in Worcester. I feel like with our structure and our environment, we’re able to pass the information along to great athletes and good prospects in order to put them in the right direction if they want to pursue going to WWE or AEW. They’ll have this at their disposal to push their careers forward a little bit faster, but that doesn’t mean that it becomes the exclusive route.

RD: For fans of major promotions like WWE, AEW and TNA who aren’t familiar with independent wrestling, what would you say makes this side of the pro wrestling business that you’re in stand out? In 2025, what sets the indies apart from the mainstream?

DC: I’ll say that it’s the energy that our events create because we run them in intimate venues. With TNA coming to Rhode Island a few weeks ago and doing an event at the Ryan Center, even if that room is scaled for 3,000 people and there’s 1,000 people there, the room itself can still hold 8,000 people. When we go to a venue like Rhodeson-the-Pawtuxet, even though capacity is

2,000 people, the space is cut to a third of that where even our “Wrestling Open RI” shows are scaled between 225 to 240 people. You can sit as close to six feet away from the ring, and for our Americanrana event, we’ll have standing on two sides and seating on the other two sides so people will literally be able to go right up against the ring, pound on the mat and be as close as possible, obviously in a respectful manner. It’s the number one thing that separates the independents from the television companies.

I think it’s cool that we have a highly structured environment, but at the same time, we don’t have to deal with commercials and downtime the same way as some of the other organizations. They might be more focused on the television aspect, which influences the live experience, but I feel that in the indies, it’s a lot more action-packed as well.

RD: After Americanrana, what’s the next goal for Beyond Wrestling? Is it simply growing the weekly “Wrestling Open” events at Electric Haze in Worcester and Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet, or is it something else?

DC: Right now, we’re scheduled for every Monday during the summer at Rhodes-onthe-Pawtuxet, so I’d like to get to a point where we’ve grown the audience enough that we can extend that relationship. I’d like to extend it indefinitely like we have in Worcester, so I would say that it’s definitely top priority, making sure that we’re securing our future both in Cranston and in Worcester for the long term. On top of that, always exploring different partnerships with different places in Southern New England where we can take our Beyond Wrestling supershows. It’s awesome that we can do “Americanrana” at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet, but I’m always intrigued as far as if there’s more that we can be doing in Boston and other areas that fans in both Cranston and Worcester will be looking to travel to for a marriage of those two audiences.
