Sholes Ace expands to backyard living
By ALYSSA WALKER Beacon Media Staff Writer
Sholes Ace and Hardware
recently expanded to include their new business, Sholes Supply Backyard & Barbecue, which sells grills that can cook anything from steaks to cakes.
Brothers Ben and Sam Sholes, two Warwick natives, opened the hardware store in 2019 with locations in Coventry as well as Brooklyn, Connecticut. However, as people started focusing on exterior home improvement and spending more time outdoors, the brothers decided to expand their Coventry location to cater to this rise in demand.
Sholes Supply Backyard & Barbecue offers all types of premium grills, smokers, and griddles from brands such as Weber, Napoleon, and Big Green Egg. While they offer classic backyard equipment, Sholes also like to keep up with what is trending to cater to their customers. Griddles, for example, have been growing in popularity as people make smash burgers from home, so Backyard & Barbecue offers plenty of those.
The store also offers small plug-in grills that are great for houses without the outdoor space or even just the winter season.
“They have something for everybody,” said Sarah Sholes, sister of owners Ben
and Sam, who is handling public relations.
On August 2, Backyard & Barbecue celebrated their grand opening with demos from their top brands. A representative from Weber made quesadillas and buffalo meatballs on their grill. A representative from Napoleon demonstrated how to make classic smash burgers with sauteed onions but also showed how you could use their griddle to make cookies. Big Green Egg also offered demonstrations and made chicken wings, cooked a steak on the grill and on the coals, and even baked a cake — called a dump cake.
“They’re all able to demonstrate just how much diversity there can be on your cooktop. It all depends on your creativity,” said Sarah.
Backyard & Barbecue also offers lawn decorations and games such as fire pits, plastic flamingos, and corn hole kits. Their biggest hot ticket item, aside from grills, are their picnic tables which are all sold out as soon as they hit the floor.
Being a small business, one of the things they value most is community.
“We’re a family-owned business. All our employees are local. It’s just great to have that community feel and to keep building it with both the people and other local vendors,” said Sarah.
Sholes Supply Backyard & Barbecue is located at 639 Washington Street in Coventry. They are open from 11-6 pm Monday through Saturday and 11-4 pm on Sundays.

Often in life, simple words and actions can say it all. This is certainly the case with the beautifully articulated words found on the website of the Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux. “Since 2000, we have wholeheartedly welcomed all Rhode Islanders as well as people from our surrounding states and anywhere else to join us in sacrament, song, service, worship, and prayer at the Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux. Come and be a part of this thriving and hope-filled
congregation.” No invitation could be more all-encompassing.
But sometimes, it isn’t words that change people’s hearts, or behaviors, or opinions. It is the feelings they get when they follow where those words take them — in this case, right to the embracing arms of this inclusive Catholic faith community in West Warwick. The feeling of acceptance. The feeling of forgiveness. The feeling of unity. The feeling of grace, and

mercy. The feeling of hope. Also, the feeling of love which is at the core of all Christianity. Love of God; love for one another – no matter what path in life we have undertaken. This “call to love” is one that resonates within the sacred halls of the Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux. It is seen in the church’s philosophy of inclusion and acceptance. It has always been a part of the teachings and actions of this close-knit community.
The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux is a Catholic Community that functions outside the jurisdiction of Rome. Congregants who attend services at “Saint T’s” will see families of all shapes & sizes, they see women in the clergy and divorcees participating in all the rituals and blessings their married and single friends enjoy. They hear contemporary music and see those who extend kindness and love to them. What they won’t see is discrimination, exclusion, judgment, and intolerance.
Recently, there have been some “small and simple” yet important changes at St. T’s. One, a bathroom is being added to the chapel’s first floor to accommodate members with disabilities — full inclusion is so valued here.
Two, the chapel’s heating & cooling system has been updated — now both air conditioning and heat flow through the main section of the church. Small and simple yet important improvements.
“Saint T’s” is located at 1500 Main Street in West Warwick. Mass is every Sunday at 10:30am; rosaries begin at 9:45am. Call 401-680-9076 or visit the church’s website atwww. saintthereseocc.org for more information.

Are there places in Rhode Island that make you happy?
The glint of the sun and sea off the shore of Rocky Point?
A willow tree that sweeps its skirt along a side street in Cranston? A café in Johnston that serves your favorite coffee milk?
Then go ahead and write it a “love note.”
GrowSmart RI is encouraging people to participate in its “Rhody Love Notes” project – an interactive, web-based initiative designed to help people celebrate their very favorite places in the state.
“It’s about building a sense of community and also sharing what you find special and unique in Rhode Island, said Caroline Nye Stevens, director of communications and events for the nonprofit organization. “It’s about all the special places – big and small – that people love about Rhode Island. Founded in 1997, Grow Smart is known for its dedication to thoughtful planning and development in in the state, while also advancing neighborhood revitalization, environmental stewardship and economic opportunity.
The Love Notes website – https://growsmartri.org/rhodylove-notes/ – features a map of Rhode Island dotted with hearts that link to submitted love notes. And Stevens said the 80-plus notes already received show that the only limit is people’s imaginations.
So far, she said, people have written love notes to their favorite stores, scenic spots, main streets and more. Some of the more unusual recipients of love include the Providence River tugboats, a rug store, a mini-golf course and a backyard garden.
There are, of course, also well-known attractions such as Rocky Point, the Botanical Center at Roger Williams Park and the East Bay Bike Path.
“Share your Rhody Love,” declares the website. “Rhody Love Notes is a collective mapping project that builds community around beloved places and spaces hidden across Rhode Island.”
Some of the spots in Cranston, Warwick and Johnston that have garnered love include the Pawtuxet Village Bridge, the Art Deco Calart Tower on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston, the Tiger Rug Company on Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick, and the Ocean State Job Lot store on Hartford Avenue in Johnston.
In writing to the Pawtuxet Village Bridge, one love note author stated, “What makes it special to me is that it reminds me how borders are only man-made obstacles and as people walk, drive or ride their bikes over it from one end to the other, they don’t even realize are crossing a border between two cities, two communities and two ways of life. It’s freedom personified!”
Stevens said GrowSmart RI officially launched the project with little fanfare on Valentine’s Day. She said she began toying with the idea a couple of years earlier when the pandemic had left many people feeling isolated and she was looking for a fun project that might help them feel connected. She said she drew inspiration from a similar initiative she had heard of in Philadelphia.
Reading the love notes sent so far is fun and full of surprises, Stevens said. An example, she said, is the love note someone chose to write to the jellyfish floating in tanks that are visible through the basement windows of the Rhode Island School of Design’s Nature Lab.
It’s easy, Stevens said, to send a love note and have it posted on the GrowSmart website. People can use social media and ‘tag’ @growsmartri, or they can email them directly to rhodylovenotes@gmail.com. A couple of key pieces of information that need to be included are: the name of the place, the address and one to three photographs. Detailed instructions are on the website.
Stevens said she hopes the project encourages thousands of notes and that people come to discover all kinds of special places in the state by seeing what others love.
“As we find ourselves facing upheaval and uncertainty on a national level, it’s all the more important that we connect to each other on a local level, strengthening our bonds to the places at the heart of what makes Rhode Island such a special home to us all,” the website states. “By inviting the public to write, share and explore Notes dedicated to the places and spaces they love, Rhody Love Notes seeks to celebrate our state’s magic and soul, and foster connections, belonging, curiosity and local pride. Because there’s a lot to
here in RI!”
