For visitors looking to take a piece of Long Beach home, the city’s independent shops offer gifts and novelties, earning it a spot among the highest-ranked U.S. cities for independent boutiques in a 2024 OnDeck study. At two long-standing boutiques, owners have spent years curating goods that reflect their own tastes and have become favorites among locals and visitors alike. At Blue Windows, every item is placed with intention. Dubbed a “lifestyle” shop by owner Heather Duncan, 53, the boutique offers clothing, baby items, kitchen wares, cocktail mixes, stationery, jewelry and a buildyour-own stamp wax kit. Duncan sources the selection herself from L.A. showrooms and gift shows in New York, Atlanta and Las Vegas, aiming for pieces that outlast the initial charm and become beloved staples. “We carry a particular dress line that’s a little more expensive, but I just know when I put it on and others put it on, they feel beautiful in it, and it’ll stay like that for years,” Duncan said.

Assistant Manager Megan Bigos, 39, said tourists are drawn to the shop’s clothes, beach accessories and local goods, including artist Sara Pilchman’s clay pots and P.F. Candle Co., a Long Beach brand since 2012. Next March, Blue Windows celebrates its 28th year. New visitors keep coming through the doors, and both women say their favorite part of the job is acting as “tour guides,” recommending local shops and restaurants. Since she was a little girl, Jennifer Hill, 52, knew she wanted her own store, a love sparked by hours visiting gift shops with her mom. Seventeen years after opening Songbird on 4th Street, she still practices those rituals. Amid Asian-inspired designs and birds on the teal walls, Songbird’s “little curated stories,” as Hill calls them, cater to lovers of cats, dogs, birds and aesthetics from cute to goth to circus, earning it a “birthday gift store” reputation. Like Duncan, Hill attends gift and craft shows and sources from small-batch, woman-owned creatives, avoiding Amazon. “I’ve also prided myself in the past 22 years trying to have different things than my neighbors have,” she said. 

On the Road with Dan Coachella Valley My wife and I have a rule for these getaways: if we can’t be there in under three hours, it doesn’t count as a weekend trip. Coachella Valley passed the test easily — a straight shot east out of Orange County on the 10, palm trees materializing out of the haze like a mirage that keeps getting more real. Two nights, three days, and by Sunday we were already planning the next visit. A Desert With a Long Memory Before there were golf carts and infinity pools, this valley belonged to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, who called Palm Springs “Seche” — boiling water — for the natural hot springs at its heart, and who have lived here for thousands of years. Dr. Welwood Murray opened the valley’s 32

first hotel in 1886, and by the 1930s Hollywood had discovered it too: actors Charlie Farrell and Ralph Bellamy founded the Racquet Club in 1934, turning a sleepy desert outpost into a glamorous escape for the studio set. Even the valley’s name has a good story — Coachella was supposed to be “Conchilla,” Spanish for “little shell,” but a printer’s typo stuck and nobody bothered to fix it! I love that this whole region carries a mistake as its permanent name plate — it felt very on-brand for our trip. My wife, who reads every plaque we pass, kept stopping to point out how much of the valley’s identity — the date palms, the irrigation canals, the very existence of towns like Indio and Coachella — traces back to farmers chasing groundwater into the desert a century ago.

Sunday: One Last Stop

We checked into the Avalon Hotel & Bungalows in Palm Springs, a boutique property that wears its mid-century glamour without irony — think citrus-hued hedges, a spa worth blocking out an afternoon for, and a pool scene that made me feel simultaneously underdressed and thrilled to be there. After unpacking, we wandered the Uptown Design District on North Palm Canyon Drive, a strip of vintage furniture shops and retro boutiques that’s catnip for anyone who loves the valley’s architectural DNA. Dinner was at Workshop Kitchen + Bar, tucked into a converted 1926 building — my wife’s Ricotta Gnocchi and my Diver Scallops accompanied by a cocktail (something smoky, I forget the name, I remember every sip) made it clear why this place is Michelin-recommended four years running.

On our way out of the valley, we detoured to La Quinta Resort & Club, the grande dame of the area, opened in the 1920s and still sprawling across 45 acres of casitas and courtyards. We didn’t stay the night, but we had a leisurely brunch by the pool before pointing the car back toward the 10.

Saturday: Up, Then Out We started the day riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which hauls you 2.5 miles up Chino Canyon in the world’s largest rotating tram cars, from desert floor to pine forest in ten minutes flat. It’s a genuine trick of geography — we left in shorts and arrived at nearly 8,500 feet needing jackets, staring down at the whole valley we’d just driven through. Back down and warmed up, we had lunch, then drove twenty minutes to El Paseo in Palm Desert, the selfproclaimed “Rodeo Drive of the Desert.” Over 300 shops line a beautifully landscaped mile, from Saks Fifth Avenue to independent jewelers, with sculpture gardens breaking up the browsing. My wife found a hat she didn’t need and bought anyway; I don’t blame her. Dinner that night was Copley’s on Palm Canyon, set in the former guesthouse of Cary Grant’s old estate — the kind of place where the history is served alongside the entrée.

Three days isn’t nearly enough to know a place like this, but it’s exactly enough to fall for it. What struck me most wasn’t any single stop — it was the contrast packed into 72 hours: alpine pines an hour after desert heat, Hollywood-era glamour next to Cahuilla history that predates it by millennia, quiet resort mornings followed by lively shopping afternoons. The desert light does something to you, too — makes you slower, more willing to sit still and let the day unfold instead of rushing it. Whimsical Mocktails

with Wicked Mouthfeel In 2026, almost every bar you walk into either offers a mocktail printed on the menu or will whip one up upon request. Dating back to the mid-19th century, a mocktail is a beverage composed with intention to simulate the cocktail experience without alcohol. Sporting a wide range of syrups, sodas, teas, and infusions, non-alcoholic options have been notoriously hard to master. Most mocktails fall flat, lacking texture, balance, and originality. So, what is the key to a masterful mocktail and where can you find one in Long Beach? The answer may be more whimsical than you’d expect. You’d drive right past it heading north on Pacific, but if you keep your eyes peeled for a fairylike lady-wolf, you’ll see The Wicked Wolf printed in blue and gold. Three years in, The Wicked Wolf is a charming café and lounge moonlighting as a romantic cocktail bar. You walk into moody purple walls dripping in dreamy storybook totems like miscellaneous teacups and floating light fixtures. Straight ahead is a massive mural of plush greenery and old trees tricking the eye with ivy breaking through the fourth dimensional wall and sucking you into what seems like an ethereal forest of Nordic folklore. Approach the sleek, backlit bar top for a warm welcome and a pocket pamphlet menu. Take a seat and leaf through the few pages until you find the non-alcoholic options listed under the Mocktail section in the very back. Excluding the obligatory N/A beer and house made ginger beer, there are five intentional mocktails available. For a refreshing and fanciful experience, order the Fountain of Youth by Michael G. and garnished with a leafy bouquet of mint, you’ll notice a striking ombre of deep purple, soft lilac, and a translucent topper cut by a cartoonish black and white striped straw. Carbonated alongside lime super-juice, brightened by mint and cucumber, sweetened with simple syrup, and made magical by butterfly pea, Fountain of Youth is balanced, semi-sweet, and bursting with cool and sharp herbal notes. Lovingly labeled “slime” behind their bar, the lime super-juice provides a profound and deliberate acidity through a popular process called acid adjusting. The reimagined acidity and rich sweetness combined cosplay as a viscosity most similar to that of a traditional cocktail. Mocktails go wrong with the texture rather than taste. Alcohol has a velvety and warm feel, with tannins tickling the cheeks as sugar rounds out the heat of ethanol. It’s difficult to replicate the complex experience of a distilled product, but an interesting consistency can trick the pallet. Flavor is dependent upon the feel, and Wicked Wolf grabs your attention with exciting textures and follows up with a simplistic symphony of sapidity.
