SHOW THE TEACHERS IN YOUR LIFE A LITTLE LOVE WITH THESE THOUGHTFUL GIFTS FOR EVERY BUDGET BY KATIE SMITH

add so much joy to the lives of the children they teach. As a mom of three, it seems like there’s no proper way to thank them. And as a new teacher myself, I can attest to the fact that we spend a lot of our time (in and out of the classroom) making sure children get what they need while in our care. Even the smallest gesture can mean more than you know. Whether your neighbor is a teacher or you’re looking to get special gifts for your kids’ teachers, here’s a curated list with something for every budget — whether you’re looking for something small and meaningful or you want to splurge. STURDY TOTE BAG Teachers carry a lot. A classic tote bag — leather or high quality canvas — that will last and can handle books, papers, and their computer, is guaranteed to make their life easier. A SPECIAL SET OF STATIONERY AND PENS Who doesn’t appreciate a handwritten note more than a teacher? Pretty note cards and a nice pen will make any teacher smile. Of course something with the state of Maine or a pine tree will be extra meaningful. GIFT CARD TO A LOCAL RESTAURANT Everyone loves a gift card to a great local eatery, whether it’s a long-time favorite or a chance to try something new. A night off from cooking is more than something to look forward to — it’s a little gift of indulgence and pampering. The hardest part will be choosing a restaurant since Maine is loaded with so many wonderful places to dine. MAINE-MADE CANDLE Choose something a little luxe for them to enjoy at home after a hard day’s work. Maine has many wonderful, local candle companies, such as Seawicks Candle Company (seawicks.com) and Near & Native (shopnearandnative.com). MASSAGE GIFT CERTIFICATE Teachers are so deserving of rest and relaxation. What better way to decompress than a gift card to get a massage? It’s a thoughtful way to show appreciation while giving them a chance to unwind and recharge.

You can find many local artists online or when perusing your favorite craft fair. MUG MADE BY A LOCAL ARTIST Most adults enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in the morning before the day starts. Caffeine just tastes better when sipped from a special, handmade mug.
STRIKING GOLD JEWELERS IN ELLSWORTH CAN HELP YOU FIND SOMETHING SPECIAL
HAND LOTION GIFT SET Teachers wash their hands a lot which can easily cause dry, chapped hands — especially during our long Maine winters. A gentle hand soap and lotion set can make the teacher in your life feel extra cherished. HANDMADE BLANKET With so many local shops and craft fairs, there are loads of Maine artists selling high quality blankets and throws made with love. Try visiting mainemade.com to find local artisans and weavers. LOCAL FOOD BASKET Visit a local bakery or deli and fill a nice basket with jams, spices, and maple syrup. Add a few homemade treats or locally made goodies to create a thoughtful gift that brings a taste of local flavor to their table. bangormetro.com BANGOR DAILY NEWS / 3

BY JODI HERSEY
Sawyer of Winterport is a retired cabinet maker whose skills and creativity are still very much in use. These days, you’ll find him covered in sawdust carving homemade wooden animal puzzles in his workshop. “I just love making them,” Sawyer said. “There are thousands of different patterns. I have over 120 dog breeds, cats, horses, wildlife, farm and zoo animals [that I make].” He said all his drawings are done by an Amish man from Ohio and the rest is up to him. “There’s no computer used, no laser, no CNC. They’re all drawn by hand and cut by hand on my scroll saw,” he said. All his puzzles are made to be free standing, with the name of the animal or breed creatively placed inside the design. The ones that can’t stand on their own are made with a base for display. Sawyer said customers will often buy his puzzles to give as gifts or as a keepsake for themselves. “People who have had a dog pass away will order one with their dog’s name in it and put it on their nightstand or a bookshelf,” he said. “It’s something different all the time.” To learn more, find WoodCrafts by Sonny on Facebook.

BOOK LOVER
CELEBRATE MAINE’S LITERARY TALENT WITH THESE FEMALE AUTHORS WHOSE BOOKS MAKE GREAT GIFTS FOR THE READERS ON YOUR LIST BY JODI HERSEY
M aine
has a plethora of talent. Artists, musicians, and authors all draw inspiration from this state in one way or another. We’ve compiled a short list of female Maine writers whose work is worth a read — and perfect for gifting this season. ELLEN BAKER of Round Pond is the author of several books including “Summerland Cove.” Baker highlights the love, complexities, and secrets within families in her book which follows three generations who reunite annually at their summer cottage in Maine. They’ve planned a summer of a lifetime — only for everything to go wrong. “Mainers will recognize some beautiful and wonderful spots,” Baker said. “King Eiders Pub, Gelato Fiasco, and Moody’s Diner are all in the book.” SUZANNE CARVER of Hampden is the author of “Flight Path.” It’s a fictional story about two women seeking answers after their husbands die in the same plane crash. “I like stories about people that are in difficult situations that have to find their grit and determination to survive or thrive in it,” Carver said. TESS GERRITSEN of Camden is the author of more than 30 mystery novels including her latest release, “The Shadow Friends.” The story is the third in her Martini Club series. It’s about a disease expert that mysteriously dies at a global affairs conference in Maine. Gerritsen based her novel off the annual global affairs conference known as the Camden Conference. “I thought there’s a lot of speakers from around the world here. What if there was a murder? I’m sorry. That’s just the way my mind works as a mystery writer,” she said. “My job is to entertain and hopefully I’ll make you think as well.”
14 / HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2026
ARDEANA HAMLIN of Hampden is the author of several books including “Pink Chimneys,” which was released back in the 1980s but is still finding its way into the hands of readers today. This work of fiction is about Bangor in the early 1900s, where a midwife, a housemistress at a brothel, and a seamstress form an unlikely friendship. “One of the things that surprised me is the number of men who have read it, which I didn’t expect,” Hamlin said. “My sister said it was almost as good as ‘Gone with the Wind,’ but not quite.” MAUREEN MILLIKEN of Augusta is the author of the Bernie O’Dea mystery series. “No conversation is safe around me now because it will end up in a book,” she said. Milliken’s novels follow a smalltown newspaper owner and reporter in Franklin County who is uncovering crime after crime. Bernie’s close work with the town’s police chief leads to some questionable choices.
MICHELLE SHORES of Brewer is author of “The Gathering Room” and its prequel, “Henceforth and Unstoppable.” Shores’ works of historical fiction dig into Maine’s first documented ghost sighting and the supernatural events surrounding the Blaisdell family. Her love of research led her to writing. “I kept researching the families involved and couldn’t satisfy my curiosity of what they claimed to have seen,” Shores said. “So, I created a story of what we do know.” MONICA WOOD of Mexico, Maine is the author of several books and plays including “How to Read a Book.” This work of fiction follows a 22-year-old woman from Abbott Falls, Maine, who has just been released from prison after serving time for a drunk-driving crash that killed a local teacher. While trying to reacclimate into society, she connects with several unlikely people in a bookstore. When asked about her writing, Wood said, “I feel like I am doing what I was meant to do.” bangormetro.com BANGOR DAILY NEWS / 15

EXPERIENCE
SPEND MORE TIME WITH LOVED ONES THIS HOLIDAY WITH THE GIFT OF A UNIQUELY MAINE EXPERIENCE BY JOANNA O’LEARY
T his
holiday season, give your loved ones the gift of time. No, not “time” like those interminable 47 minutes you spend waiting in line at the DMV, but a “good time,” maybe even a “great time” engaging in a uniquely Maine activity. FOR THE LOCAVORE For a versatile foodie-centered “experience present” consider a Maine farmers’ market gift certificate. This voucher is a particularly useful gift for the locavore in your life, giving them access to more than 50 different farmers markets across the state — including several that are open during winter, like the farmers’ markets in Bangor, Hampden, and Orono. Gift certificates are available for purchase online. MFFM.SQUARE.SITE
FOR THE MAKER You’re never too old to go back to school, and for the right course, you just might want to. The Shaker Village — the only active community of its kind in the United States — at Sabbathday Lake near New Gloucester offers a range of virtual, on-site, and hybrid courses that make for wonderful special occasion presents. Give a crafty comrade on your “nice” list a basket-weaving workshop or a “make your own lip balm” class. MAINESHAKERS.COM
MAKE MEMORIES For fun with four-legged friends, try a gift card for an alpaca walk from Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm in Unity. These half-hour guided sessions cover basic alpaca handling and safety, 16 / HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2026
then conclude with participants leading their alpacas on a promenade through the grounds. It’s a fun, unforgettable, and memory-making experience. MAINEALPACAEXPERIENCE.COM
MAKE NEW MEMORIES WITH AN ALPACA WALK AT NORTHERN SOLSTICE ALPACA FARM IN UNITY
GET CHEESY You can make an aspiring cheesemonger’s dreams come true with a gift certificate for an adult cheesemaking program at Pineland Farms. Pineland offers a robust schedule of beginner courses for farmers cheese, chèvre, feta, and cajeta, and students are also invited to inflect their creations with herbs from the adjacent garden. Plus tons of other classes to boot. Or pick up an annual farm pass for the whole family, which includes free daily farm visits and discounts on food and other activities. PINELANDFARMS.ORG
Unlike that eggnog candle, an “experience present” will garner its recipient memories to last a lifetime. (And you don’t even have to worry about wrapping paper.) bangormetro.com BANGOR DAILY NEWS / 17

FOR THE MINIMALIST
SIMPLE, THOUGHTFUL GIFTS FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE LESS IS MORE BY KATIE SMITH
W hen
you have a close friend or family member who loves the holidays but doesn’t love having a lot of stuff around, finding the perfect gift can be a challenge. As a Christmas lover and a minimalist myself, I completely understand. Of course, we all want to give gifts people will genuinely love, but when someone seems to have everything and wants nothing, it can be hard to know where to start. The good news is that there are plenty of thoughtful gifts that won’t add clutter, from useful everyday items and consumables to memorable experiences. If you’re shopping for someone who values simplicity, here are some ideas they’ll actually appreciate and be happy to add to their list. FRESH FLOWER SUBSCRIPTION There are lots of CSA flower shares in Maine — Weezy’s Farm & Flower in Bangor and Hidden in Thyme - Florals & Farm in Orono, to name a couple. Fresh flowers are always a wonderful gift and add warmth and beauty (without adding clutter) to any home. CANDLE WARMER AND A MAINE CANDLE Candle warmers not only add a beautiful ambiance to your loved one’s home, they are eco-friendly. Instead of burning a candle, you just set it under the warmer. It heats up so the scent floats through your home without the smoke or soot. And because the candle isn’t being burned away, it will last a lot longer. DIGITAL SUBSCRIPTION From Netflix to Audible to digital magazines, there are digital subscriptions to fit just about anyone on your list. They offer something to enjoy — without any added clutter in the house. LOCALLY MADE SOAP We all use soap — gifting a few bars of beautiful handmade soap makes any home feel extra special. Pair with a handcrafted soap dish made from a local potter or woodworker.
18 / HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2026
EXPERIENCE GIFT Maine experiences are endless — a day of skiing, Maine Botanical Gardens membership, a gift certificate to a local restaurant, performance, or cooking class. These are all wonderful options that won’t take up any space.
TICKETS TO A LOCAL SHOW IS THE PERFECT GIFT FOR THE MINIMALIST IN YOUR LIFE
A SERVICE Whether you go with a car detailing, a spa treatment, or handyman service, this kind of gift definitely gets a minimalist excited. Keeping things organized and clean makes them happy. These are practical luxuries they might not spend money on for themselves. MAINE-MADE CONSUMABLES Think maple syrup, coffee, honey, or tea. Things from Maine just taste better, and once they’ve been enjoyed, they’re gone. Locally made food or cooking items support local businesses and feel personal. DIGITAL PICTURE FRAME This is a great alternative to having lots of pictures around the house. You load a bunch of pictures to the digital frame and it will cycle through each one — a win-win for someone who doesn’t want their walls covered in frames, but loves looking at pictures.

KIDS IN THEIR 20S
FROM COLLEGE STUDENTS TO YOUNG ADULTS LIVING ON THEIR OWN, THESE GIFT IDEAS ARE PRACTICAL, FUN, AND SURE TO PLEASE BY KATIE SMITH
If
you have kids in their 20s, you might be struggling with gift ideas this holiday season. Whether your children live on their own, are in college, or live at home, it can be hard to find things they will both need and want. I can assure you as a mom to three kids in their 20s, this is a list of things they will love. NICE SHEETS Nice sheets are a simple luxury in life most of us don’t appreciate until we are older. But once you experience what it’s like to be wrapped in comfort, you don’t want to go back. LUGGAGE Even if your 20-something doesn’t travel a ton, if they do take a random road trip, vacation with friends, or have a work trip, they are going to need some luggage. (Trust me, they will take yours if they don’t have any, and you’ll never see it again.) A sturdy piece of luggage, or luggage set, is something they’ll be thankful for even if it’s not on their list. ROBE AND SLIPPERS There’s nothing like slipping into a cozy robe and nice pair of slippers after a hot shower or when you get home from a long work day. EMERGENCY KIT FOR THEIR CAR It may be boring, but it’s definitely necessary. An emergency kit for the car is probably not on any 20-somethings list, but it could get them out of a bind in the future — and set your mind at ease. QUALITY WORK BAG, BRIEF CASE, OR BACKPACK Whether your kids are in cosmetology school, learning a trade, or starting their dream career in a different state, a classic work bag is the finishing touch for a new beginning. A LOCAL EXPERIENCE Maybe your child is a skier, foodie, or loves camping. With so many amazing experiences in our state, you can get an entire local experience by visiting area businesses and purchasing gift cards — think a ski shop gift card and day pass to their favorite mountain.
HOW ABOUT A NICE PIECE OF FURNITURE TO ELEVATE A NEW HOME?
A GOOD QUALITY WINTER COAT Staying warm and comfortable is essential. Our days of telling our kids to put on a coat aren’t over just because they’re in their 20s. What better way to communicate that than to get them a warm jacket? A GIFT BOX SUBSCRIPTION There are so many choices — whether your child is a reader, coffee lover, or spends all their extra cash on makeup, a gift subscription box is special because there’s something to look forward to throughout the year. A FRAMED PHOTO OR ILLUSTRATION OF THEIR PET A pet photo or illustration is a gift they’ll keep forever, and each time they look at it they will be flooded with joy and good memories. A CLASSIC PIECE OF JEWELRY Whether it’s a nice chain, high quality watch, or classic diamond studs, a nice piece of jewelry that will always be in fashion is destined to become a family heirloom. A MONTH’S PAYMENT OF CAR BILLS I was gifted this one year when I was 21 and that’s all it took to make me feel rich. A handwritten card letting your child know you’ll make their car and insurance payment GIFT CARDS FOR for the month will definitely take some weight off their A MEAL OUT ARE shoulders. ALWAYS A WELCOME TREAT TO FIND IN
A COFFEE MAKER OR YOUR STOCKING ESPRESSO MACHINE If you have a coffee lover, we all know how expensive daily coffee runs can be. Gifting your kids a nice coffee maker or espresso machine, even if they only use it sometimes, is a great way to save your kids some money.
