Aparentemente a desenho noo comparece. Curiously, thiS third stage of a project dedicated to drawing in its different manifestations shows a set of photographic work (from the early 50s, in Germany), where apparently the drawing is not present. This would be the conclusion of a first, more direct observation, though maybe a less speculative one. What ISsuggested IS a regard which may perceive the possible relationsbetween these two languoges. Certainlynot a very orthodox regard, but one whose interest is actually in dismantling a little the outlined categories of the different means of artisticproduction. Drawing, in the way it has been approached in this project, is not only one of these categories. In fact, it would be present in almost all artisticactivity It is fundamentally a structure, an organization upon which an idea ISbuilt. The drawing pre-exists in the very moment preceding the configuration of the work in the plan of reality. It would be possible to say that it IS constituted in the reasoning, in the visual thought. Or still,in the perception, sometimes in the very cutout extracted from reality by a regard It is difficultto precise the exact moment and place where drawing ISborn: if in imagination, perception or memory But it is probably in one of these moments prior to its materialization. Photography is also essentially the fruit, the evidence of a "sensitiveregard" which perceives, selects and frames the image. Even if the mechanical register of thiS image caught by photography ISfar from the register of the line built by the gesture of the hand The line, in photography, is not the path of the gesture, but the drawing performed by light. It is interesting to observe that, in the beginning, photography was conSidered by many observers as "aparticular, almost magical, type of drawing'~

Documentary photography had a function similar to the one drawings and paintings had had at a certain time - that of being a faithful register of reality."But the new discovery"already brought, in its essence and origin,a very particularcondition. As stated by FrancescaAlinovi, photography "is based in a strange misunderstanding related to its double nature of mechanic art: that of being an instrument as precise and infallibleas science, and at the same time, as false and inexact as art "/ In the Europe of the 20s, many artists used photography not only to register reality, but also to transform it suggesting new realities;such was the case of Man Ray and other surrealistartists, the constructivistones, to mention just a few, and whose pieces of work testify the interesting resources offered by photography The radical transformation of photography promoted by some artists coincides with a moment where, within the modernist movement, the expressive possibilities of abstraction were being recognized. There are at least two distinctivemoments in the photographic process where there can be manipulation or construction.'in the instant where the Image IS captured from reality - when the regard cuts out and frames fragments, or even when the photographer composes the image to be registered (photocomposition), and in the processing of this image (laboratory work). All these possible interventions end up by giving to photography a speculative character, distancing it from its condition of an instrument of faithful register of reality. There is always a sort of re-creation of reality through photography Finally It IS the path of possible approaches and inevitable distancings that we are interested in following. It is in such conditions that the specificities of each language, and at the same time, the common and essential questions of the different means of artisticproduction, are revealed. november 1995

This oblique, displaced view many times seems to me to offer mare efficient apenings to reach that which is in the core af the system. To enter through the great main door, devised for that, and where everything has already been organized to be seen frontally, seems to me to be less sharp, less pertinent, less inciting than sneaking in sideways, through a small side-entrance which willallow us seeing unprecedented things (which were never before seen in such a way).'"

It was incited by the invitation of visiting photography through a side-entrance - the drawing that I have decided to resume the subject of modern photography. The reason for this is that, since the appearance of photography, this is perhaps the first time that the dialogue between these two means of expression has happened in its richest form, full of developments. What we will see here is a production not very well-known, specially in Brazil, and which is only briefly mentioned in most books on photography. It is a reinterpretation of avant-garde experiences which occurred in Germany between the end of the 40s and the beginning of the 60s; they were started by the Photoforma Group, and named Subjective Photography. These photographs have just been found at the estate of the Foto Cine Clube Bandeironte and were sent to Brazil by Otto Steinert, the main mentor of Subjective Photography, at the request

Assim teremos condi<;6es de captar melhor as nuances das aproxima<;6es entre desenho e fotografia e, de algum modo, iluminar 0 momenta presente dessa rela<;ao. of the Clube, for an exhibition which took place in 1955 at the Museum of Modern Art of Sao Paulo The exhibition, named Otto Steinert and his students, brought to public a production quite well known among the supporters of international artistic photography of that period - and even in Brazil, particularly within the photoclub movement of the State of Sao Paulo This exhibition at the AS Studio hopes to offer an opportunity to reflect on the possibilities of dialogue between drawing and photography, according to a historic approach. Consequently, due to the sample chosen, this could contribute to broaden the information available to us on modern photography. Having such a perspective in mind, we have decided to include here a text by Otto Steinert, where the author gives a concept of Subjective Photography. In the course adopted here, we will position ourselves in the no-man's land which, throughout history, has separated art and photography, and which today has no longer definite outlines. Thus, we will be capable of better perceiving the nuances of the approaches between drawing and photography and, somehow, clarify the present moment of this relation. The form of approach will be the essay, understood here in its sense of trial. Such position presents as great a risk of following through sterile shortcuts as of reaching the core of the system. In theory, as in everything, risks are inevitable. Knowing how to use them to our advantage is taking transience as the fundament of our relationship with the world. IN THE BEGINNING IT WAS THE DRAWING The most immediate approach we may establish between drawing and photography comes from the very etymology of the Greek word, which refers to a drawing produced by the action of light. Here, the reference to drawing is not fortuitous. Photography, a word created in the XIXcentury, is transparent in pointing out the affiliations of the new means of representation. Technically, the photographic device placed itself as the heir of the dark room, an instrument which had been perfectioned since the XVI century in order to help reproducing drawings faithful to nature and according to the perspective system of the Renaissance.fEsthetically, in the beginning, photography had as its model the repertoire of

fine arts, being particularly closer to drawing, at that time considered to be the means with which photography presented greater similarity. It was common to consider photography as a drawing made by nature itself, an association exemplarily translated in the title of Henry Fox Talbot's book The crayon of nature, which was published between 1844 and 1846. Before that, Talbot had already named photogenic drawings the images resulting from the procedure of light exposure, of objects placed on sensitized paper. The practical applications of photography would soon be multiplied, and most of them established predictable rivalries with drawing. An example of such dispute is clearly stated in the pages of the illustrated press and documentation areas. It would take some time before one could perceive which of the two means was best adapted to the different demands, thus establishing a particular space for each one of the two. At the same time, it may be observed a direct approach between drawing and photography within the scope of artistic photography starting in the beginning of the XIXcentury. Facingthe industrialization of equipment and materials, and the consequent democratization of photography, groups of photographers were formed in the hope of giving it the status of work of art. To the way of thinking of that time, the most logical way of reaching this objective was by incorporating in photography the principles of academic art, not only as to subject, but also as to technique. The pictorial aesthetic was then founded, and thus denominated because the image, originally captured from reality, suffered a series of graphic and pictorial manipulations, resulting in unique copies which were very close to drawing, engraving or painting, and which could hardly be recognized as being photographs. The supports most used in these experiences were fine papers, traditionally employed in drawing. CONTROVERSIES OF MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY The romantic side of pictorialism reaches the end of the FirstWorld War quite behind the main discussions on photography of that time. The conquest of the snapshot and the need for a new relationship with the world, imposed by the new conceptions of time and space inaugurated with

CONTROVERSIAS DA FOTOGRAFIA

MODERNA

modern times, would lead to a radical change in photography. Instead of misty pictorial images, it appears a photograph of great clarity, intended to value what is specific in the photographic register This search for the specificity of the means would be first formalized in the United States in the 1910s, generating a sort of photography which would be known as straight photography, that is, direct, pure. The preaching was for obedience to a certain objectivity, thus formulated by Paul Strand in 1917

"Objective is of the very essence of photography, its contribution and at the same time its limitation. The photographer's problem is to see clearly the limitations and at the same time the potential qualities of his medium, for It IS precisely here that honesty no less than intensity of vision is the pre-reqUisite of a living expression. The fullest realization of this is accomplished without tricks of process or manipulation, through the use of straight photographic methods" (Gernsheim, 1962, p 152) The translation of these principles were images which encompassed a great spectrum of subjects, from urban scenes and machinery to elements of nature, and had in common a more immediate approach between subject and object, no longer mediated by technical manipulations of pictorial origin. The search was for revealing the aesthetic potential of forms in the scenes registered, and the result were photos which verged on the limits of abstractionism. The commitment with objectivity and speCificity was far from being a concern of the artistic avantgarde of the beginning of the century. They would find in photography an inciting means of experimentation. Since Dadaism and Surrealism, with pasting and photocomposition techniques, to Constructivism and its experiences with aerial photography, Futurism with its studies of movement, or yet Man Ray's photograms and the Bauhaus, all these movements used photography, each one in its own particular way. In the field of experimentalism, we may highlight Moholy-Nagy, a professor who participated in the pictures of the Bauhaus. This school of art and design acted in the perspective of giving art a social function, and of reaching a new integration between life, art and technology. If we think of the means available at that time, photography was undoubtedly the one which expressed this interac-

tion in a more immediate and accessible way. Moholy-Nagy understood photography as the ideal resource to translate the Bauhaus program at a pedagogical level, and although he did not teach it as a technique, he adopted it as an exercise for enlarging perception. Moholy-Nagy was the great theoretician of the New Vision, whose basic premise was that human vision is extremely limited in biological terms, and that the camera was the device capable of potentializing it, of giving men access to new dimensions of reality which were fundamental to adjust men to the challenges of the XX century. The New Vision meant to discover new optical relations in what was excessively common. It materialized itself as a fractured vision in oblique perspectives and unusual framings which only the photographic camera was capable of offering. The arbitrariness of the subject's regard was impressed on the image. To Moholy-Nagy, the question of objectivity was also present in the discussions about photography; however, it was covered with a meaning different from the one adopted by straight photography. To him, photography was objective because it worked with true optical relations, in a purely visual form, without a metaphoric or symbolic character - and not because of a canonical obedience to reality. Still according to him, the photographic activity was based on the binomial production-reproduction, that is, the reproduction being photography taken directly from reality, and production being the broad spectrum of possible experimentation, such as solarizations, diversified interventions in copies and negatives, multiple exposures, photocompositions and photograms. To disclose the relations between the p' Itography employed by Moholy-Nagy in the Bauhaus and the drawing, we will resort to the art historian Giulio Carlo Argan, when he comments on the change in the traditional status of the drawing operated by the School: "The drawing is no longer a graphic means with which one abstracts the form of the accidental matter of things. "Drawing'; in its active sense of project, is an intuition of spatial or constructive relations within matter (..). Therefore, drawing liberates itself from the manual quality of graphic action, which as such, always acts in a naturalistic space and time," (Argan, 1951, P 56) In this sense, we may understand the photographic device as being a privileged instrument in

arte Giulio Carlo Argan, quando comenta a mudan<;a do estatuto tradicional do desenho, operada pela escola.

the liberation of drawing from its manual destiny. Photograms may be understood in this same way; they were so largely used by Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray,that they would be an updating of the photogenic drawings of Talbot, in accordance with a modern sensitivity eager to question the limits of representation. The researches of Moholy-Nagy have opened an extremely fertile path, greatly enlarging the limits between art and photography.

The experimentalism and freedom of action proposed by Moholy-Nagy to photography would soon be contested. At the end of the 1920s, his ideas suffered a strong opposition from Albert Renger-Patzsch,who conSidered Moholy-Nagy a pictorialist ill modern clothes. Following this moed, Patzschstated in all article of 1927 :

"Letus, therefore, leovp art to artists alld If:.!LS try by means of photogrop"y to create photographs that con stond alone on account of their photographic quaflty - without borrowmg from art'~(Gernsheim, 1962, p 172) The principles defended by Albert RengerPatzsch, formally very close to those guiding American straight photography, had a great group of photographers to gather in Germany under the name of New Objectivity - an allusion to the movement in fine arts. Linked to the professional world, those photographers wanted to renew the vocabulary of photography, aiming at commercial applications, specially in the illustrated press. The book from Renger-Patzsch,The World is Beautiful, published in 1928, is a clear expression of the modernist search for everyday-life beauty It is composed of textures of natural elements, sequences of objects, architectural details, and different products of the industrial civilization. Everythlllg was photographed with great technical preciosity and a certain uniformity of points of view which would be known as typical of this trend. Some compositional boldness of the New Vision would be assimilated without, however, emphasizing the photographer's personal view. On the contrary, the images tried to impersonally account for the material reality of things. The principles of New Objectivity had a much greater immediate repercussion than that achieved by Moholy-Nagy's experimentalism. It even gained more strength in the Bauhaus, with the arrival of Walter Peterhans for the official place

of Professor of Photography of the School in 1929. Beyond the a':sthetic discussion, an ideological confrontation was established. While the ideas of Moholy-Nagy were banned by the Nazis, the principles of New Objectivity were assimilated by the new regime for political propaganda purposes. For one and a half decade, nothing would be said about the experimentalism in German photography. In the 50s, the creative effervescence of the 20s had long been buried by the drawbacks of History. It was in such an environment, eager for resuming personal expression channels, that some photographers - such as Wolfgang Reisewitz, Heinz Hajek-Halke and Peter Keetman - gathered to review the heritage of photography from the avant-garde period, specially from the Bauhaus, with the objective of proposing a contemporaneous performance. The Photoforma Group was thus founded, and it would soon have Otto Steinert as member. Steinert would be the most important element of the period and the theoretician of Subjective Photography, together with Franz Roh and Eisenwerth. Although the group admitted that every photograph was the result of a subjective process of selection, the conceptualization of a Subjective Photography was due to a clear positioning in opposition to the New Objectivity, valuing experimentalism and personal view as the basis of the photographer's attitude in all areas he was involved in. In 1951, 1954, and 1958, Steinert and his fellows organized great exhibitions which were landmarks to an international discussion on the already long course of modern photography, and to the publicizing of Subjective Photography The first two exhibitions resulted in two books called Subjective Photography, gathering theoretical texts and a great number of images. The first one, in particular, showed 725 pieces of work, divided in several sectors. There was from retrospectives dedicated to Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray,to a collective of photographic groups guided by the principles of Subjective Photography, such as the Italian La Bussola and the French Group of XV,as well as photographs of independent authors grouped according to countries - among them, Brassai,Bill Brandt, Doisneau, and even Cartier-Bresson.All of this, not to mention the Photoforma Group and some of the best students of Steinert.

A EXPOSIc;:Ao: 0 GRUPO FOTOFORMA E SEUS SEGUIDORES

As vinte e cinco fotografias presentes nesta

In the book of the second exhibition, the author established four big categories which, according to him, encompassed all photographic experience: reproduction, which would be the document; photography of representation, which he named the beautiful image; the photographic creation of representation, whose embodiment was the very Subjective Photography; and the absolute creation, that is, abstract photography The last exhibition, in 1958, would stress the end of this photographic experience, although its echos would still be heard for some time, not only in European but also in American photography. Otto Steinert himself observed the fact that the characteristic formalism of Subjective Photography had been transformed into rule and thus ended as a possibility of creation. Steinert's importance is, above all, in his role as catalyst of a reflection on photography in the 50s, and as publicist of the idea of a contemporaneous need for resuming experimentalism as a basis for creative photography It is also important to note that Steinert's intense activity as teacher has contributed to forming many generations of photographers. THE EXHIBITION: THE PHOTOFORMA GROUP AND ITS FOLLOWERS The 25 photographs present in this exhibitJon were selected from a portfolio of about 50 images produced by Otto Steinert and his students between 1948 and 1954. Among portraits, documentary photographs and different experimentalisms, images with strong graphic characteristics were selected - those which were translated into drawings or caligraphies of light. The historical references of the group lie, more specifically, on the work of Man Ray,Moholy-Nagy and Herbert Bayer, from whom the group borrowed some techniques such as solarization, negative printing, photocomposition and photogram, enlarging their resources through their own repertoire of quite sophisticated mixed processes. In fact, the principles preached by Steinert and his followers are more puristic than the ones of the Bauhaus, for they do not admit any kind of extraphotographic technical intervention related to drawing or painting. The techniques employed had to be derived from the physical-chemical characteristics of materials and procedures, exclusively pertaining to the photographic universe. Therefore,

0 nome do grupo que originou esse tipo de especulac;:ao- Fotoforma - presta-se melhor a situar essas imagens, em particular, do que 0 conceito ample abarcado pela Fotografia Subjetiva. the final image results from a meticulous technical construction The set of photographs presents a rigorous formalism through a technique which suppresses nuances of half-shades and emphasizes the strong contrasts of black and white. The name of the group originating this kind of speculation Photoforma - is better adequated to place those images in particular than the broad concept encompassed by Subjective Photography. Such photographs highlight the form. They are built images, not only in the first moment of regard, but also in all the stages of manipulation performed at the same time and/or after the framing and register of reality. The motives are never presented in the same way they occur in the eyes of the photographer, unless reality itself had already been previously manipulated or is capable of being through the resources and devices of the photographic camera. If in what respects the technique there is a clear positioning related to the use of specific photographic procedures, formally, however, part of the results is close to the abstractionism in force at that time in the fine arts. We are thus faced with the difficult task of evaluating the legitimacy of such results. Current analyses destitute them of their value due to what would be a dependence of the pictorial patterns of the time. It is easier for us to state that, at the end, this production has contributed to accepting photography as a means of artistic expression in a scope broader than the artistic circle of avant-garde. It has also offered subsidies so that the modernist renewal could reach, in a more systematic way, other areas of work, such as photojournalism and photoadvertising MODERN PHOTOGRAPHY IN BRAZIL Daring to observe the images presented in this exhibition is to have in front of our eyes one of the sources of the modernist experience in Brazilian photography. As it is known, the Week of Modern Art of 1922 did not attract a photographic production. The Week came to formally update the repertoire of fine arts, but in its debate on Brazilian cultural identity, there was no space for experiments with new languages. Even the art of avant-garde of Brazil In the 50s did not include a photographic

by Waldemar Cordeiro, entitled Historical

Possibilitiesof Concretism. Geraldo de Barros, a photographer linked to the ranks of Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante and one of the negotiators of the Clube's participation at the II Bienal of Sao Paulo, would be the one to exalt the quality of the production of the Bandeirante as a whole:

"Something should be said in the name of the truth:many believe we - Aldemir and us - have obtained the room at the Bienal to the FCCB.The room was granted due to the quality of the photographs in this collection,a quality which has won all contrary arguments, conquered passionate defendants and convinced everybody" (Geraldo de Barros, 1954, p 12). In the sequence of his article, Geraldo de Barros would still comment the favorable criticisms received by the photographs of Bandeirante from renowned personalities such as Henri Moore, Max Bill, Walter Gropius, Mario Pedrosa and Wolfgang Pfeiffer. Geraldo de Barros himself would be one of the most important people in the course of experimentalism and the search for more personal solutions linked to the universe of fine arts. In his Photoformas, a series of works done between 1948 and 1950, we may see a systematic formal research of a productive character, exploiting questions regarding support and wandering through abstractionism, without stopping at what was specifically photographic. Some time later, around 1954, we would see the rising of another powerful research which started from the same parameters of experimentalism, personal creativity and the establishment of a bridge with the universe of fine arts: the work of Jose Oiticica Filho. Although settled in Rio de Janeiro, Jose Oiticica was a member of the Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante and kept strong links with the Clube through collaborations in texts for the Clube's Bulletin. Oiticica's adopted path also went through a constructive structuring of space. Through his Creations and Recreations, he would reach geometric abstractionism. In both cases, the rupture of the limits of specificity in photography is performed by approaching the Concretism and the Neoconcretism of Rio de Janeiro, respectively.

A audacia no dominio da otica sempre come<;:asendo impopular.

The exhibition Subjektive Fotografie strives to present a selection of the creative spirits of modern photography. As a first attempt of its kind, it would not presume to be complete; however, it does propose to shed some light on the ambitions of contemporary photography. A new photographic style is indeed a necessity of our time. Subjektive Fotografie is in fad the motto of this exhibit, for this "formula" underlines its essential charader: the creative personality of photography (as opposed to documentary or illustrative pradical photography). This exhibition is thus inherently dedicated to a type of photography through which the artist submits to the fads of exterior reality those mutations suggested to him by his own personal view of the world. Habitual photographs which endeavour at nothing but beauty, and whose chief attradiveness lies in the simple reflection of the subject - pale when confronted with experimentation and novel achievements. Audacity in the field of optics always begins by being impopular, but only experimental photography can unveil all the technical and creative means to render - through images - the optical experiences of our time. Sub/ektive Fotografie is, in our view, merely a concept destined to function as a general framework for all fields of personal photographic creation - from subjedive photograms to photographic journalism: faithful and profoundly psychological at the same time. All the efforts of this genre derive, consciously or unconsciously, from the time of the so-called New Photography, encompassing the decade between 1920 and 1930; this is why we exhibit the works of some of the artists of the New Photography avant-garde, such as Moholy and Man Ray who, during that period, broke up with pictorial photography by means of their experiments and daring achievements, and so established the New Objectivity in the photography of the time (with its

extreme offspring: cubism and surrealism). The special Moholy-Nagy collection (the first in Europe since 1935) is also intended as a homage to an artist who was banished from Germany at that time and died in 1947 in the United States. In addition, we exhibit photo-montages by Herbert Bayer, who was a professor at the Bauhaus in Dessau, prior to emigrating to the United States. Moreover, this exposition intends to show the evolution of photography since around the 1930 landmark of the renewal of vision and of photographic creation. For the purpose of imparting greater clarity to the concept of Sub;ektive Fotogrofie, so that it will be understood as we see it, the exhibit organizers have decided to present it in two parts: a first group consists of a collection of works which we believe will provide an orientation and create a style, including those which may have just experimental value Within other groups, distinct personalities or those pertaining to national identities consequently make for a richness of expression poignantly more eloquent. Photography is the most effective medium to afford us a view of the world in which we live. Given its universally accessible technique - and the easiest to master - it is one of the most appropriate means of promoting mutual understanding among peoples. With this responsibility in mind, we have devised the Sarrebruck Subjektive Fotogrofie exposition as a contribution to the creative evolution of international photographic language.
