A Note From Marybeth Clark, Director of Kinky Boots What a privilege this process has been for me as a director. Kinky Boots was supposed to open two years ago. We had a cast and had started design work. But then….. we all know what happened. For most of this season I have felt like I was holding my breath, planning and moving forward but with lots of glances over my shoulder. Imagine my joy as things started back up and I realized I was surrounded by such a supportive team. Costume Designer Hayley O’Brien dressed me in Blithe Spirit, so I knew to expect the best, but with more than three times as many actors in this cast it was no small feat, not to mention the six men with multiple costumes who needed to represent the beauty and glamour of drag performers. Set Designer Adam Jehle somehow got his design projects back to back and not only created this incredibly imaginative set, but also designed the set for Black Pearl Sings! that ran last month. Lauren Monteleone joined us from NYC for her first show as a choreographer with us, but she did appear on stage multiple times ten years ago when she was a Resident Actor (Including: Legally Blonde, Nevermore, Boeing-Boeing, and Anything Goes). Our Music Director Sam Henderson joined Charleston Stage 10 years ago too, but lucky for us he has not left. Sam and I have worked together on over 20 musicals and I’m incredibly grateful for each and every one. Our goal at Charleston Stage is always to create our own unique version of the shows we do. The royalties we pay require us to use the music, lyrics, and script provided but the rest is up to us. Everyone went out of their way to ensure our production served the story and songs but with our own flair. Lighting Designer Caleb S. Garner and Properties Designer Stefanie Darby rounded out this talented group. Joining them was all of the production staff who worked in both our set and costume shops to bring these designs to the stage, all while Stage Manager Ravyn T. Meador kept everyone on track. I worked with many folks on this show who I had never worked with before, many are much earlier in their careers than I am. We had to figure out the best ways to communicate and share ideas in a way that invited collaboration. As I tell our students “Theatre is an art not a science. There is not ONE way to do it.” When discussing the show earlier in the season, a season member said, “Oh that is the show about drag queens, right?” I knew what they meant and agreed at the time, but I must admit after working on Kinky Boots I would answer differently now. I think Kinky Boots is about people trying to figure out who they are and where they belong. I am grateful for this experience and proud of Charleston Stage’s production of Kinky Boots. Author's Biographies HARVEY FIERSTEIN (Book) Harvey Fierstein is a four-time Tony Award-winning writer and actor. His Broadway writing credits include Kinky Boots, Torch Song Trilogy (Tony, Drama Desk, Dramatists Guild Awards), Casa Valentina, Safe Sex, Legs Diamond and A Catered Affair (12 Drama Desk nominations and the Drama League Award for Best Musical). His La Cage Aux Folles is the only show to ever win Best Musical and 2 Best Revival Tony Awards. Other plays include Spookhouse, Forget Him and Flatbush Tosca. His teleplays include Tidy Endings for HBO (ACE Award), and On Common Ground for Showtime. His children's HBO special, The Sissy Duckling, won the Humanitas Prize and the book version is in its eighth printing. Other honors include the Drama League Award for Outstanding Performer of the Year, a special OBIE award, NY Magazine Award, and nominations for The Olivier Award and an Emmy. His political writings have been seen on PBS' series “In The Life” and published in The NY Times, Huffington Post and Hartford Courant. He was inducted into The Theater Hall of Fame in 2008. CYNDI LAUPER (Music and Lyrics) Cyndi Lauper is a Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award-winning artist with over 30 sterling years and global record sales in excess of 50 million albums. With her first album, "She's So Unusual", Lauper won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and became the first female in history to have four top-five singles from a debut album. Since then, Lauper has released ten additional studio albums, been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and celebrated as a New York Times best-selling author. Overall, during her storied music career, Lauper has been nominated for 15 Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, seven American Video Awards and 18 MTV Awards. In 2013, Cyndi Lauper became the first solo woman to win Best Original Score for her music and lyrics for Kinky Boots. Originally from Austin, Texas, Molly holds a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre from The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University. You might have already seen Molly this season as Margo Crawford in Bright Star, Ruth Condomine in Blithe Spirit, Junie B. Jones in Junie B. Jones Is Not a Crook, and most recently as Mary Debenham in Murder on the Orient Express. Jerquintez has also performed in many different shows around Memphis and Mississippi including: Hairspray (Theatre Memphis), Jelly’s Last Jam (Hatiloo Theatre), and more. Now a Charleston local of 3 years, she was last seen at the Dock Street as Charlotte Dennon/Ensemble in both the 2021 and 2019 production of Elf The Musical as well as Brooke/Vicki in Noises Off. You may have seen her on the Dock Street stage in 2019 as Rusty in Footloose, Annabelle Lee in Nevermore, and Jovie in Elf The Musical. This past year, she has performed as Lucy Grant in Bright Star, Edith in Blithe Spirit, Lucille in June B. Jones Is Not a Crook and Greta Ohlsson in Murder on the Orient Express. Julia graduated from Arizona State University in 2019, receiving her Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre Performance. Other recent credits include Lilli Vanessi (Kate) in Kiss Me, Kate, Gingy in Shrek: The Musical, and Vivienne Kensington in Legally Blonde. He received his M.F.A. in acting from Florida State University, Asolo Conservatory in Sarasota, FL. After working as a professional actor in theaters from Maine to Florida, he returned to the Charleston area where he helped create Charleston County School of the Arts. Locally Michael has been seen as either a performer or director with Charleston Stage, Village Playhouse, Footlight Players and Flowertown Players. He recently played the role of Joe Stoddard in the Charleston Stage production of Our Town. Other favorite roles include Oscar Wilde in Three Trials (Footlight Players), Lockstock in Urinetown (Village Playhouse), and James Joyce in Travisites (The Asolo State Theatre). Cast Biographies (In Alphabetical Order) LUCIANA MARCIAL-VINCION (Trish) Luciana has thoroughly enjoyed performing and choreographing for Charleston Stage over the last 22 years, especially the shows Pippin, Guys and Dolls, Anything Goes, Chicago, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Sister Act, Beauty and the Beast and Footloose. Favorite roles locally include Nikki in Sweet Charity and Mavis in Stepping Out with Footlight Players, and the Ensemble in Hair with WhatIf? Productions. An exercise physiologist by trade, she is an international public speaker and Master Instructor for the Spinning® indoor cycling program, in addition to her roles as Senior Advisor and Global Team Manager for the company. Much love to her husband Chris and kids Zen and Kalea for continued support while Mommy spends late nights singing and dancing. JASON D. MARION (Angel) Jason is a native of Beaufort, South Carolina. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Otterbein College in Westerville, OH, postgraduate work in Educational Technology from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, and Advanced Fine Arts teacher certification from the South Carolina Department of Education. Additionally, Jason’s training includes the Sea Island School for the Arts, South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts, and North Carolina School of the Arts. His education and training benefitted him the experience of being a drama educator with the Beaufort County School District until 2010. Jason’s stage and film credits include RENT with Bay Street Theatre (Savannah, GA) and Flowertown Playhouse (Summerville, SC), Bug with Bay Street Theatre (Savannah, GA), A Christmas Carol with the Footlight Players (Charleston, SC), The Exonerated with Misspent Youth Productions/ARTworks (Beaufort, SC), The Pillowman with Palmetto Theater Xperiment/ARTworks (Beaufort, SC), Showtune with Beaufort Performing Arts, Inc (Beaufort, SC), Jack and the Beanstalk with Project Educational Theatre (Kenner, LA), After the Invasion of Giant Termites with Swift Warning Productions (Columbus, OH), Raggedy Ann and Andy with Otterbein College (Westerville, OH), and Tales from the Land of Gullah with Matrix Media/ASE, LLC (Beaufort, SC). Currently, Jason spends his spare time creating several original characters including the more popular drag persona, Symone N. O'Bishop! Symone N. O'Bishop is a creative yet resourceful entertainer and her drag style is not limited to one category. She's been to Dock Street Theatre before as a featured soloist in Musical Miscast(an A.F.F.A. benefit). Symone strives to share every color of the rainbow through her drag artistry all while being glamorous and relatable. While most drag queens boast on satisfying and shocking every fan; Symone also brings inspiration, motivation and comfort to anyone receptive to her artistry. In the pageant arena, Symone has been awarded multiple pageantry titles and reigns currently as Miss Charlotte F.F.I, Miss Charleston Royal Pride of Nations Newcomer and most recently Miss Royal Pride of Nations National Newcomer. Symone's favorite motto is "I am not a SNOB... I'm just painted this way."

Cast Biographies (In Alphabetical Order) ANTHONY T. MATREJEK (Richard Bailey/Factory Worker/Other) Anthony is a USC Alum '17 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He has performed with many theater companies including AFY (Wilson, NC), Playhouse (Wilson, NC), Paramount Theater (Farmville, NC), Imperial Centre (Rocky Mount, NC), NCT! She has previously appeared on stage at the Dock Street in many wonderful Charleston Stage productions and has been blessed to perform as both ensemble and a principle cast member. Letty credits her introduction to the Charleston Theatre community to the invite she received to be a part of the ensemble cast of the 2012 performance of Porgy and Bess, performed for the first time ever at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, though written in Charleston depicting a well-known local Charleston Rainbow Row Native. Charleston Stage Leadership JULIAN WILES (Founder and Producing Artistic Director) Playwright, director, designer and educator, Julian Wiles, grew up on a farm in Fort Motte, SC, and studied history and theatre at the College of Charleston (B.A. 1974). He moved to North Carolina to pursue graduate work in theatrical design, receiving an M.F.A. in Dramatic Art in 1976. In 1978 he founded Charleston Stage, which became the resident company of the Historic Dock Street Theatre, America’s first theatre. Under Wiles's leadership, Charleston Stage has become one of the region’s largest and most respected arts institutions and includes an extensive education program reaching over 25,000 young people annually. Wiles has designed, directed and produced over 300 plays and musicals for Charleston Stage. He has written 34 original plays, musicals, and stage adaptations, eight of which are published. Many such as The Seat of Justice and Gershwin at Folly celebrate the Lowcountry’s rich cultural heritage and history. More than 100 productions of his published works have been performed across the United States and internationally. Wiles received the National Youth Theatre Director's Award in 1988, Charleston’s NAACP Special Recognition Award in 2004, SC’s Governor’s Award for the Arts in 2010, and was inducted into the SC Theatre Association’s Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2021, he was awarded the University of North Carolina’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. MARYBETH CLARK (Director of Kinky Boots/Associate Artistic Director and Director of Education) Marybeth is in her twenty-third season with Charleston Stage. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and grew up in Tolland, CT. Marybeth has a degree in theatre/performance from the University of South Florida and was cast in her first show at an Equity theatre at 18 years of age in Tampa. She worked as an actor in professional theatres throughout the Southeast for ten years before settling in Charleston in 1994 with her husband, actor Victor Clark. She was a member of the theatre faculty at Charleston County’s School of the Arts for middle and high school students. Though she moved to Charleston planning on ‘retiring’ from theatre and starting a family, she taught and directed for Charleston Stage part-time beginning in 1997, before joining the company full-time the following year. She and Vic are the proud parents of 2 daughters, Lila and Prentice. Lila is a college senior at Drew University in Madison, NJ, and Prentice works with special needs students at the Washington Center in Greenville, SC, while pursuing her Masters. Marybeth and Vic do not have an empty nest but share their home with Marybeth's mother and many adopted dogs and cats. In her time at Charleston Stage she has directed over 70 shows, most recently Of Mice and Men, Mamma Mia! and Elf The Musical. She began the Resident Professional Acting program her second year with the company and continues to hire, train, and supervise our young professional actors. Charleston Stage Artistic Staff Biographies STEFANIE DARBY (Properties Master) Stefanie is proud to be working with Charleston Stage in the beautiful Lowcountry. Recently graduating from the University of Minnesota, with an M.F.A. in Scenic Design, Stefanie has had the opportunity to work with amazing institutions such as the Minnesota Opera working with the Properties Department and designing throughout the United States. Among other works, Stefanie began her career after graduating with a B.A. in Scenic Painting and Acting from the University of Northern Colorado as a Scenic Charge Artist with the Little Theatre of the Rockies, The Weathervane Theatre and other institutions. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Stefanie is excited to be setting down roots in the South and working with inspiring artists and young artists with the TheatreWings program. CALEB S. GARNER (Lighting Designer) Caleb is a lighting and sound designer based in Charleston, SC. A North Carolina native, Caleb received his B.A. and B.F.A. from Catawba College in Salisbury NC, and his M.F.A. from The University of Southern Mississippi. Garner’s designs, ranging from concerts, to ballets, to musicals, to straight plays, have earned him eight regional and national design awards. Caleb has been a featured designer from New York to Mississippi, designing in the Northeast, Midwest, East Coast and Deep South. Caleb enjoys turning large pieces of wood into smaller pieces of wood (sometimes mistakenly called furniture), screaming with students (often recognized as teaching), and playing with things that spark and smoke. Caleb currently serves as the Resident Lighting Designer at the Charleston Stage Company and serves as an adjunct lecturer at the College of Charleston. SAM HENDERSON (Music Director) Sam is Charleston Stage’s Resident Music Director and Director of Music Education. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree in Instrumental Music/Trumpet Performance from Baylor University in Waco, TX, as well as a Masters Degree in Musical Theatre/Opera Music Direction from Arizona State University. Sam has over 20 years experience teaching music professionally, and has been working as a theatre music director and conductor since 2005. Professionally, Sam has worked for The Phoenix Theatre Company, Childsplay, The Broadway Palm West Dinner Theatre, Arizona Broadway Theatre, Lyric Opera Theatre and Copperstar Repertory Company prior to coming to Charleston Stage. ADAM JEHLE (Scenic Designer) Adam, originally from Springfield, MO, is an Associate Scenic Designer and Assistant Technical Director for Charleston Stage. His credits include scenic designing shows such as Cinderella and Mamma Mia! at Crane River Theatre in Nebraska. Other shows included are Titanic, Cabaret, and Groundhog Day at Stagedoor Manor in upstate New York. He also did the Projection Design for the recent Murder on the Orient Express and the Scenic Design for Black Pearl Sings! He received his B.F.A. in Design Technology and Stage Management from Missouri State University in 2020.
