I hope that you were able to attend our 2023 Chamber of Commerce Economic Outlook Conference. We sold out the event once again this year. Next year we will be looking at more ways to distribute the valuable economic information that was presented to our attendees. We learned that there will still be many opportunities for success this coming year, and I know everyone left the conference with a phenomenal amount of data and new ideas. Thank you to all of our Chamber Legislative Affairs Delegation that traveled to Austin on Feb. 13 and 14 to deliver our State Legislative Action Plan from the Bryan/College Station business community. Our teams visited the offices of every member of the Texas House of Representatives and all members of the Texas Senate as well. Our Action Plan is available to view on our Chamber website, www.bcschamber.org. Your Chamber Legislative Affairs Committee not only fights for our local businesses in Austin, but will also travel to Washington D.C. in May. We go to D.C. to voice our needs and concerns to federal officials as well as federal agencies with jurisdiction over the Bryan/College Station market. Working for your business legislatively is just one more way your Chamber membership amplifies your voice as we work together to build a successful and thriving business environment. Congratulations go out to this year’s Community Impact Award winners: Mike Espitia, owner of GoldStar Barber Studio; Korey Thomas, owner of Remnant of Nawlins; and Meredith Stancik-McAuliffe and Janis Stancik, owners of Sabi Boutique. This was the 20th anniversary of this award, and we recognized 20 past winners as well at our Chamber luncheon. We are happy to be able to acknowledge these minority-owned businesses and the impact they have on the B/ CS market through job creation, support for local nonprofits and the goods and services they provide. This luncheon is supported by the Chamber’s Community Outreach Committee, which works to make the Chamber look like our community. Because of our Chamber’s inclusiveness, we are able to speak with one voice for all of our businesses, and all the individuals that make up the faces and stories behind every B/CS business. We recognize we are stronger together rather than apart, and our Community Outreach Committee and Community Impact Award winners prove this to be correct every day. Is money, or the lack thereof, stressing you out? Maybe you are drowning in debt and trying to keep all the bills paid on time. Are you hiding credit debt from your spouse? Did you resolve to be “better” with your finances this year? At one point in my life, most all the above questions were true, and I did not see a way out. I made the decision to sit down with a financial advisor and was told what I knew all along-get rid of the consumer debt. It took me approximately three years to clean up the mess that I created, and I want to share five strategies (provided by Cetera Investment Services Marketing Central) that helped me get my financial house in order.

An easy way to start saving is to set up automatic transfers. Most financial institutions can help you set up internal transfers, so your money moves from your checking to your savings account without you having to think about it.
Being financially healthy looks different for everyone and every life stage. But what almost everyone can agree on are the benefits of creating positive habits to improve the health of your finances over the long term. Use these strategies to get started on your way to financial wellness. 1. Evaluate Your Expenses You may have a general idea of what your regular expenses are, but it is a good idea to look at your bank statements to get a better picture of exactly how much money you spend. Having accurate numbers of what you spend can help you identify areas where you could be spending too much and can afford to cut back. You know approximately how much you spend eating out for one meal, but do you know how much that adds up to over a month? Put your actual expenses into focus. 2. Increase Your Net Income Everyone wants to make more money, but unfortunately, that is not something you have a lot of control over. Increasing your net income is not only about earning more – it’s also about spending less. After you take a good look into your finances, find areas where you can cut back. There may be some areas of your finances where you are spending money unnecessarily. Use these funds for more practical purposes like paying off debt, creating an emergency fund or saving for retirement. 3. Pay Off Debt Paying off your debt can have a significant impact on the health of your finances. Having debt is often unavoidable, but the kind of debt that overwhelms your life is not financially healthy. Reducing your debt will only serve you in the long run. Use methods like the snowball or avalanche method to get your debt under control. Once you are no longer

JOE SALVATO RETIRES FROM FIRST FINANCIAL BANK
JIM PILLANS RETIRES FROM BRAZOS VALLEY SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Jim Pillans has been the director of the Brazos Valley Small Business Development Center since he onboarded in 1998, 25 years ago. Since then, he has outperformed on all key performance indicators and provided topnotch customer service in business development. During his tenure, he has dedicated over 19,000 hours to 2000 clients. His contributions can be felt across the community. He has assisted with the opening of 195 businesses which created 1500 jobs, and $97 million in loans and capital investments. Outside of the office, he has been a mentor to Texas A&M students, presented as a speaker at numerous business-related events, and has formed many relationships with local community leaders. His services will be missed but we congratulate him on his well-earned retirement.
NUTRITION CLASSES WITH THE BRAZOS VALLEY FOOD BANK
Bryan Texas Utilities and The Texas Parks and Wildlife Brazos Valley Food Bank’s Nutrition Education Program offers free nutrition classes to low-income community members by partnering with organizations and agencies in our community. Their Nutrition Education program is designed to empower people of all ages to become enthusiastic health advocates for their families and communities! All classes are completely FREE to sites and those in attendance. The program offers fun, interactive lessons for elementary and middle school, and the nutrition educators will come to your school to teach nutrition lessons paired with a physical activity. There are also several types of adult lessons. They can cover popular topics like making healthy changes and time saving techniques, or more specific information like nutrition during pregnancy. COLLEGE STATION HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA TO PLAY AT CARNEGIE HALL
113 people will be traveling to New York, New York with the College Station High School Orchestra to perform in Carnegie Hall. For those who may be unable to attend in NY, they will be performing locally on March 6th, and scheduled to play in Carnegie Hall on March 10th. Traveling with 113 individuals to the Big Apple is a big undertaking financially - roughly $75,000.. Students have been fundraising within the community to assist with these costs. TROUBADOUR FESTIVAL
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Troubadour Festival organizers announced the festival will be coming to Aggieland in 2023. In a social media post, the festival announced it will take place on Saturday, May 20 at Aggie Park. The Festival touts 34 Texas BBQ joints and musical performances will all be part of the event.The music lineup will be revealed Friday, February 24 at 10:00 a.m. Previous Troubadour Festivals have featured Texas country artists with ticket packages ranging in price from $65-$225. Ticket information for the 2023 event at Aggie Park was not immediately available. - KBTX

Building A Happier Healthier Workforce
In a large brightly lit conference room in downtown Houston, sit the CEO, CFO and HR Director of a large oil and gas company. The room is alive with chatter about the last event in which the company had participated. The CEO and 50 employees had cycled from Houston to Austin in a span of two days. The CEO is ecstatic about how many employees participated. Just two years ago, according to health insurance claims, over 40% of the company’s employees had some underlying health condition, ranging from hypertension, early-stage diabetes, to high cholesterol. On the other side of the conference table, their wellness consultant is presenting the current year’s health claim numbers. The company has cut down health insurance claims by 15% from 2 years ago. They have tackled high claims, employee retention, job productivity, and even inclusion, all through a tailored wellness program. According to their latest employee surveys, employees felt they were more cared about, felt more a part of the team, and enjoyed coming to work. These results are up 20% from the previous year’s survey. The CFO and HR Director comment on how the building feels “alive” when you walk in and how employee energy is tangible! Why would companies go to such lengths to create a healthy workplace? The reasons are endless and so practical. Wellness is reciprocal when it comes to employer and employee relationships.
When employers show that they care about their employees, employees tend to show up to work in their fullest capacity. The result is higher production and innovation. Healthier employees drive insurance costs down and utilize less PTO for sick days.

An average of $204 yearly savings for members who participated in biometric screenings vs. those who did not.
Successful wellness incentives have morphed over the years from free fitness wearables, gift cards, contributions on medical premiums and HSAs, and have more recently expanded to encompass a wellness experience. Higginbotham Insurance’s wellness professionals worked with a company for several years and after their third year of giving away gift cards, we asked them, “do you remember the last gift card you received and what you did with it?” Almost everyone in the room said they could not remember. The company chose instead to give employees a memorable experience that related to their wellness culture. We surveyed the employees and asked them what they would want for their wellness incentive. We received lots of ideas— company sponsored bike rides, extra PTO, and even high-end exercise equipment. We then asked the question, “when the last time was you felt completely relaxed and happy?” Most people answered that it was the last time they went on vacation.
We took that feedback and ran with it! We proposed offering employees experiences that they could share with anyone they wanted. The company used wellness dollars to book short staycations and vacations for their employees and their families. Only a couple of weeks after the first trip was awarded, the company reported a higher engagement rate in their program and a sharp uptick in preventative care visits for the month. The company invested a small amount in the reward and their time in creating a sustainable, employee backed wellness plan and were rewarded with outstanding results that will continue to benefit the company and employees well into the future. At Higginbotham, we work with companies to tailor wellness programs to create healthier workforces that result in higher retention, lower claims costs, and happier and productive employees.
