As President & CEO of the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce, I am proud to reflect on the many ways our Chamber continues to champion the success of our business community and strengthen the Brazos Valley. One of the most impactful initiatives this year was our Federal Legislative Delegation to Washington, D.C. Alongside Chamber members and community leaders, we met with elected officials and federal agencies to advocate for the priorities outlined in our Legislative Action Plan. These conversations focused on issues critical to our region, including workforce development, infrastructure, economic competitiveness, higher education, healthcare, and support for local businesses. By bringing the voice of Bryan-College Station directly to our nation’s capital, we continue to ensure that the needs of our community are represented at the federal level. We also celebrated the graduation of the Leadership Brazos Class of 2026. This year’s class completed an immersive experience designed to deepen their understanding of the industries, organizations, and leaders that shape our community. Through sessions focused on healthcare, education, agriculture, local government, public safety, economic development, and more, participants gained valuable insight into the opportunities in the Brazos Valley. We are excited to see how these graduates will continue to serve and lead throughout our community. In addition, we enjoyed celebrating with the community at this year’s Founders Night, presented by the City of Bryan. This annual event shares the rich history and heritage of Bryan and College Station while providing an opportunity for community members to connect, build relationships, and recognize the progress that continues to move our sister cities forward. As we look ahead, the Chamber remains committed to creating opportunities for business growth, leadership development, advocacy, and community engagement. ADVOCATING FOR THE BRAZOS VALLEY IN WASHINGTON, D.C. Written By: Phil Shackelford
One of the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce's most valuable member benefits is our advocacy on behalf of more than 1,700 businesses across the Brazos Valley. Each year, we take our community's priorities directly to our nation's capital through our annual Federal Legislative Delegation Trip. This year's delegation traveled to Washington, D.C., May 12–15, to meet with members of Congress, federal agencies, and policy leaders to advocate for the issues that matter most to our business community. Before each trip, the Chamber's Legislative Affairs Committee works alongside business leaders and subject matter experts from across the region to develop our Federal Legislative Action Plan (FLAP). This document outlines the Chamber's policy priorities and recommendations on issues including economic development, fiscal responsibility, healthcare, transportation, infrastructure, higher education, and workforce development. The FLAP serves as the foundation for every meeting we hold in Washington and ensures our delegation speaks with one unified voice on behalf of the Brazos Valley. Our delegation began the week as guests of Comcast at its America's Square headquarters in Washington, D.C. The evening included policy briefings from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Dustin Bryant, Associate Vice Chancellor for Federal Relations for the Texas A&M University System, and Bret Perkins, Senior Vice President of Community Growth & Economic Development for Comcast NBCUniversal. As Comcast continues constructing its fiber network throughout the Brazos Valley, Mr. Perkins shared opportunities for partnership, economic growth, and continued investment in our region. The evening concluded with a reception overlooking the U.S. Capitol. The following morning began with a transportation briefing from Larry Meyers of Hance Scarborough, who discussed the continued progress of Interstate 14 and Loop I-214. Interstate connectivity remains one of the Chamber's highest legislative priorities, as Bryan-College Station is one of the largest metropolitan areas in Texas without direct interstate access. Together with the Cities of Bryan and College Station, the Chamber continues advocating for additional federal funding through the Congressionally Authorized Future Interstate (CAFI) Coalition to help transform these authorized corridors into completed interstate highways.
Throughout the remainder of the day, our delegation met with every member of the Texas Congressional Delegation or their staff to present our Federal Legislative Action Plan and discuss the priorities of our business community. One particularly meaningful meeting was with Congressman Brian Babin, Chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and a longtime advocate for transportation infrastructure in Texas. We thanked Chairman Babin for his leadership in advancing I-14 and Loop I-214 and shared the importance of continued federal investment in these projects. Our delegation also invited him to visit the Texas A&M University System's RELLIS Campus to experience firsthand the innovative research, workforce development, and economic opportunities being created in the Brazos Valley. The day concluded with dinner at the Capitol Hill Club alongside Congressman Michael McCaul and his staff. Congressman McCaul has been an outstanding partner to the Chamber over the years, helping ensure our delegation has meaningful opportunities to engage with influential policymakers while in Washington. On our final day, Congressman McCaul's office coordinated an exceptional series of congressional briefings. Our delegation had the opportunity to hear directly from Senator John Cornyn, Senator Ted Cruz, Congressman Michael McCaul, Congressman Brian Babin, Congressman Pete Sessions, Congressman Michael Cloud, representatives from the White House Legislative Affairs Office, and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise. Congressman McCaul reflected on his years of leadership as Chairman of both the Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs Committees, highlighting legislation that has strengthened border security, supported pediatric cancer research, and advanced domestic semiconductor manufacturing through the CHIPS for America Act. That legislation is already producing tangible results for the Brazos Valley, including the planned construction of one of the nation's largest semiconductor manufacturing facilities in neighboring Grimes County. Advocating for our members at the federal level remains one of the Chamber's most important responsibilities. The relationships we build and the conversations we have in Washington help advance projects and policies that strengthen our regional economy and improve the quality of life for everyone who calls the Brazos Valley home. Our delegation brings together leaders from both the public and private sectors, united behind a shared vision outlined in our Federal Legislative Action Plan.

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of the businesses that keep Brazos County running? Me neither. Honestly, it wasn't something that had ever crossed my mind. Like most people, I was busy going about my day, rushing from one thing to the next, focused on doing my part and checking off the never-ending to-do list. What I didn't realize was that beneath the surface of our everyday lives is an incredibly complex network of people, industries, and organizations all working together to make this community thrive. The inner workings of Brazos County are nothing short of remarkable—and there is no better way to experience them firsthand than through Leadership Brazos.
What stood out most was seeing how interconnected everything truly is. No industry, organization, or leader operates in isolation. The success of Bryan-College Station depends on collaboration, communication, and a shared commitment to making our community stronger. Leadership Brazos provides a front-row seat to this reality and showcases how all the pieces fit together to form the powerhouse that is the Brazos Valley.
Leadership Brazos gave me something I didn’t expect. I applied expecting to make a few connections and gain a better understanding of how I can be a part of the community and serve. What I walked away with was a much deeper appreciation for the people I was standing next to and those who had stood there before.
Every graduate you speak with will tell you about the friendships they made. It sounds cliché because everyone says it—but everyone says it because it's true. There is something unique about spending months learning and growing alongside a group of people who all share a desire to better understand and serve their community. Before long, classmates become friends, and friends begin to feel like family.
While the educational opportunities alone make the program worthwhile, the relationships formed throughout the experience are what truly make Leadership Brazos special.
Throughout the program, participants are given a behind-thescenes look at the many moving parts that keep Brazos County running. We often see the finished product—a successful business, a packed football stadium, a functioning justice system, or a thriving agricultural industry—but rarely do we get the opportunity to understand everything that happens behind the curtain. Leadership Brazos opens those doors. From experiencing the fast-paced action inside the production studios during an Aggie football game to meeting the ranchers whose families have been raising cattle and producing beef in Brazos County for generations, every session offered a new perspective! We explored the complexities of our justice system and learned that what happens in a courtroom is only a fraction of the work being done every day by dedicated professionals committed to serving our community. We met leaders in healthcare, education, government, public safety, and nonprofit organizations (even professional wrestlers!) each contributing a vital piece to the larger puzzle.
You find yourself relying on one another for insights, ideas, introductions, and support. The connections extend far beyond professional networking. They are built through shared experiences, conversations on bus rides, happy hours after long days, cheering each other on during a team softball game (even if you aren’t winning) and even bonding over unexpected moments, like adopting a pet during a visit to the Aggieland Humane Society. These experiences create genuine relationships that continue long after graduation. Many of us, including myself, join Leadership Brazos Alumni Association after our year is done, just to continue to feel a part of the magic!
Leadership Brazos doesn't simply teach you about the community; it makes you a part of it. It connects you with individuals who are passionate about the future of the Brazos Valley and gives you access to one of the most intricate and coveted networks of people who proudly call this region home. The relationships, knowledge, and perspective gained through the program continue to provide value long after the final “task” is complete. If you are considering applying, my advice is simple:
Do it!
Whether you are new to the area or have lived here your entire life, Leadership Brazos will show you aspects of our community that you have never seen before. Presented by Radio Ink magazine, the Medallas de Cortez Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in Hispanic radio programming, sales, and management across the nation. Named in honor of Raoul Cortez, founder of the first Spanish-language radio station in the United States, the awards recognize individuals and organizations making significant contributions to the industry. In addition to Mauricio’s award, LaJefa 102.7 received several national finalist recognitions, including Station of the Year, while Alberto Vega, Jason Carranza, Dale Hendry, and Tommy Ramirez were recognized for excellence in

BRYAN ISD SUPERINTENDENT RECOGNIZED AS REGION 6 SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR The B/CS Chamber of Commerce proudly congratulates Bryan ISD Superintendent Ginger Carrabine on being named the Region 6 Education Service Center Superintendent of the Year. This distinguished recognition reflects her outstanding leadership, dedication to student success, and commitment to supporting educators and families throughout Bryan ISD. Region 6 serves 56 school districts, 13 charter schools, and 132 private schools across a 12,000-square-mile area, impacting more than 200,000 students. Being selected for this honor highlights the positive influence Superintendent Carrabine has had on public education and the Bryan community.
