DE KALB STUDENT, CANCER SURVIVOR BY: TRICIA SIMPSON Samara Martin is a sophomore at our school, and she has been through more than most people her age. At the age of three, Samara was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This cancer doesn’t have stages. It’s a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects white blood cells. Samara doesn’t really remember her time during cancer, but her mom Julia does. Julia says “Watching Samara lose her hair, the times she would get sores in her mouth from the treatments, and her not eating and turning into skin and bones was the hardest part of the cancer.”

Samara’s mom knew she was strong and could get through it. For Julia, the fact that it was the type of cancer that Samara could beat and fight through is what gave her hope. She beat cancer near her fourth birthday. Samara’s last visit for Leukemia was almost six years ago.. Samara is now an “outgoing, humble, and fun girl” in her best friend’s eyes.
