NEW FACES AT DE KALB BY ABIGAIL MILLER It's rare to see a new face here at De Kalb. But, as of January 4th, the first day of the new quarter, we have two new faces: Ms. Bretz and Coach Garry but many call him Coach G. Both are new student teachers. Ms. Bretz is student teaching with Mr. Wardlow and Coach G. is student teaching with Coach Dice. Ms. Bretz is a senior at Missouri Western State University majoring in history with a concentration in education .“I like helping people learn,” says Ms. Bretz. Bretz grew up in Rushville and went to school at the elementary and later moved to Savannah and graduated from there. If you would like to talk to Ms. Bretz and learn more about her, you can stop by Wardlow's room and see her there. Coach G. is also a senior at Missouri Western majoring in physical education. I want to become a teacher to work with students,” says Coach G. Coach G who grew up in St. Joseph, Missouri, and went to Lafayette High School If you would ever like to know more, you can stop by Coach Dice’s classroom. Both student teachers will be here until the end of the semester and will graduate in May and go on to teach future students in classrooms of their own.

SCHOLAR BOWL BY HELAINA GEOFFROY On Thursday, January 6 and January 13, the De Kalb Middle School Scholar Bowl team had their first meets of the 2022 season in Rockport, Missouri.and here at De Kalb 8th grader, Miley Phillips, who is in Scholar Bowl for her third year now, feels excited and nervous for upcoming meets. But, she is ready to take on the challenge. “It went well. We won two and lost one. I answered two questions and both were correct.” When getting an answer right she feels proud of herself. The High School Scholar Bowl team starts practices in February with meets starting in March. Usually for High School and Middle School Scholar Bowl, about six to twelve students join each year. Mr. Jenkins is now starting his seventh year as a coach. Mr. Jenkins recalled that aside from the competition, “There was once a time when someone bought a live fish at a stop on our way back home. That was pretty memorable.” For those with a certain skill set it can be the most fun activity out there. If you know a lot about a lot of different areas and love trivia, it is enjoyable to have an environment to use that knowledge in. The next meet is next Thursday the 20th at Nodaway- Holt.

FFA GOES GREEN BY ABIGAIL MILLER Yet again FFA offered the students of De Kalb another chance to learn and experience new things. On January 7, Mr. Medsker took 12 students to Missouri Western for the Green Hand FFA trip. “Green Hand is a motivational conference to give first year FFA students opportunities,” says Mr. Medsker. Green Hand gives student opportunities. "I learned there's lots of opportunities in FFA.” says freshman Brooklyn Frakes. When they first got there, the state officers took the students into a big room and performed a skit for the students. “It was a lot of fun,” says freshman Tori Hawk. Going to green hand gives these students a day out of school and inspiration to be more involved. “They get to interact with state officers, and they get to interact with other students in FFA, and hopefully it gets them more motivated to be involved in FFA events,” says Mr.Medsker. If you would like to learn more about Green Hand or any other FFA events coming up, you can talk with Mr. Medsker down in the Ag building.
KAYLEE LAYTON'S BOOK OF THE WEEK BY MEKAYLA BOYDSTON
De Kalb has students who never quit reading, and one of those students is sophomore Kaylee Layton. If you see Kaylee, she will most likely be reading or carrying a book around. The book she chose to share with us is They Both Die in the End by Adam Sibera, She has finished reading this book and says she recommends it because "It's sad but really cute." JANUARY 14 2022

HOOP-SPIRATIONS Caden Weinmann
Senior Caden Weinmann’s favorite NBA star is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Shai Gigleous is good with making easy buckets as Caden Weinmann is. Caden likes Gigleous because he has a smooth game and good fashion. Caden looks up to Shai because “He inspires others to do better and he helps out communities.”
Gracie Hanshaw
Junior Gracie Hanshaw’s favorite NBA icon is Kobe Bryant. Kobe was an amazing post play-maker just like Gracie is. Gracie likes Kobe because he was a really good person before he passed away and he loved his family lots. She looks up to him because of this famous quote: “The moment you give up, is the moment you let someone else win.”
Chris Weinmann
Junior Chris Weinmann’s favorite College basketball player is Diego Bernard, who currently plays with the Northwest Bearcats. Chris likes Bernard because of how he plays basketball and his positive energy on the court. If you ask someone how Chris is on the court, you will probably hear about his upbeat, positive attitude. Chris looks up to Diego because “He works really well with his teammates.”
Devin Hall
Sophomore Devin Hall’s favorite NBA star is Stephen Curry. Stephen Curry currently plays with the Golden State Warriors. Curry is known for how good he is, and if you ask someone about Devin, they will most likely say something about his basketball skills. Devin looks up to Steph Curry because of the way he takes care of his family and the way he plays basketball.
Kalyn Hartman Sophomore Kalyn Hartman’s favorite NBA player is also Stephen Curry. Kalyn likes Stephen Curry because he’s an amazing basketball player and he is also very famous. She looks up to him because “he never gave up on his dream.”
