ANGEL TREE BLESSES AREA FAMILY IN NEED BY ABIGAIL MILLER
Christmas trees are a big part of Christmas. They look pretty, and you put presents under them. But what if your family isn't fortunate enough to be able to put presents underneath? This year you can help some families in need and put some presents under their trees. De Kalb’s National Honors Society (NHS), is always willing to help and they are doing the Angel Tree again this year. “For Angel Tree, we put a tree out in the lobby and put ornaments on it that have something for a family in need this year,” says junior Riley Johnson. If you're trying to decide what to donate, “anything helps. You could donate some socks or a blanket,” says senior Rebekah Gunter.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL The De Kalb High School boys and girls basketball team has been striving through the season despite some setbacks. Energy and motivation can always cause a team to be down, just as much as a lack of players can. For the boys, the team is coming together better than the beginning, and they are doing better than previous times. At De Kalb, in sports, everyone is family. For the boys team this really helps motivate them to do better. The boys have high hopes for the future of their team. “I know it will go well,” says Chris Weinmann. Each Coach does different practice routines to better their team. For Coach Wildhaber, aka “Dubs,” they work on “skill development and preparing for specific game situations as well as we can.” For the girls, Coach Kenz, prepares her players by “practicing game-like situations and breaking down stuff so that we know what we’re doing and we’re prepared for each game.” The girls basketball team has a lack of players compared to other schools they compete against, such as St. Joe Christian. Despite this setback, the girls always come back because of how hard they work in practice. Conditioning is not something that most teams like, but with limited players, it’s important to be ready, so, Rachel Reagan says, “We do a lot of conditioning.”

Another setback the girls had this season was having one of their seniors injured. Macy Dittemore has a knee injury, but that doesn’t stop her from having good spirits for future games. The boys and girls high school basketball teams will continue to play and do well even if they do have some setbacks. It is still early in the season, and there is plenty of time for everything to come together.

On Sunday, November 5th, the Rushville Days committee held a small event at the Rushville Christian Church for kids to have a chance to take pictures and talk with Santa. There were all kinds of fun crafts, activities and hot chocolate for the children to enjoy. Rushville Days committee member Christy Boydston says, “Rushville Days wanted to do something nice for the kids of the community. It was completely free and non-profit.” They wanted to try something fun and new to kick off Rushville's annual tree lighting ceremony. “It turned out pretty well, but we will definitely have to advertise more next year,” Christy stated. Rushville Days hopes to do this again next year and see you at all of the upcoming Rushville Days events.

ELEMENTARY BASKETBALL UNDER WAY BY ABIGAIL MILLER Elementary basketball. Is it different from middle school or high school? “We take the same approach to scoring points as we would in high school basketball,” says coach Aaron Mathews. In elementary school basketball everything is the same, they still score points and they take the same approach. “ We take this approach because it's basketball.” says coach mathews Basketball isn't always easy and for little kids it wouldn't be easier .“Point guard is the hardest thing,” says 4th grader Khloee Frakes.. “Layups are the hardest thing” says 3rd grader Emmie Kirschner It can be hard for kids to pay attention “ keeping their attention and getting them to focus.” says Coach Aaron mathews Coach Mathews’ team plays every Saturday from 9:00am until 1:30pm in the DeKalb middle / high school gym, so if you would like to see them play, come on down. “We're going to be number one!” says 5th grader Gage Hartman.
BOSTON BURDETTE'S BOOK OF THE WEEK BY TRICIA SIMPSON
De Kalb has students who never quit reading, and one of those students is freshman Boston Burdette. If you see Boston, he will most likely be reading or carrying a book around. This week he is reading Soul Eater by Atsushi Ohkubo. Boston is on book 10, and so far he would recommend the book to other readers because "they are good books". Middle School Spellers Abuzz

By: Helaina Geoffroy The De Kalb middle school spelling bee was held on Thursday, December 9th, in the Commons. This year's winners were Miley Phillips for 8th grade, and Shayla Whitmore for 7th grade. Shayla Whitmore felt that none of the words were complicated and that she did well. Her winning word was "technique." Miley Phillips, the 8th grade winner, described that she was feeling frustrated because of how much pressure there was. Miley's winning word was "preened." Mrs. Taylor, who works hard to run the bee each year, said the hardest part is “the nervous students or getting enough students to do the spelling bee. That is why I let them have the choice of doing it.” She wishes that more students would participate because it is a good way to represent our school. Winners will compete in the Scripps County Bee, which will be held on February 5, 2022, at Truman Middle School in St. Joseph. Alternates include 7th grader Cecilia Sherlock and 8th grader Josephine Long.
