DE KALB STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS BY ABIGAIL MILLER
For many of us, Halloween is a big deal, but for a lot of people in Mexico, it's not more important than Día De Los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead. The Day of the Dead is a celebration in Mexico where they honor the dead. Some ways they honor the dead are “they make ofrendas, which is basically an altar for their loved ones who have passed. It's usually by their graves, and people decorate them with candles and flowers,” says Ms. Reagan. An old tradition in Spanish culture is to bring wine and pan de ánimas (spirit bread) to the graves of their loved ones. According to History.com, “it’s believed that the border between the spirit world and the real world dissolves.” Here at De Kalb, students in Ms. Reagan's Spanish class are making sugar skulls to learn about this important cultural event. After you finish celebrating this Halloween, don't forget that the world isn’t done celebrating. For some people, the most important part of the season is just starting.

INSIGHT INTO DE KALB'S SENIORS BY TRICIA SIMPSON Natalyn has been cheering since 7th grade. She started cheering because, "I wanted to be able to go to all of the games and I've wanted to cheer since I was in elementary school." Natalyn's favorite memory from cheer is, "Cheering for football games, especially close games because we get super hype." Natalyn wouldn't change anything about her 4 years of being at DeKalb. Her plans after high school are to, "Go to K state, become a vet and hopefully open my own clinic and to have several dogs."
Natalyn Killoren Carli Browning has done cheer for 6 years, which is starting at the beginning of middle school. She started cheerleading because, “When I was a little kid I watched the cheerleaders and I liked what they did, and I also did dance growing up.” Being a senior can be bittersweet, but looking back on memories always helps. Carli’s favorite memory from cheer/school is “on Senior Night, we had someone run the flag and then she ended up running on the field and falling.” If Carli could change something about her four years at DeKalb, it would be “not taking the little things for granted.” Carli’s plans after high school are to go to KU, study nursing, and become a trauma nurse later on. Carli is going to miss “getting ready with each other before games, the bus rides, and dancing with cheer squad.”

Hayden has been playing football since sophomore year, which is 3 years. Hayden’s favorite memory is “when Caleb punched a dog.” If there was something Hayden could change about his 4 years at DeKalb, it would be to “start playing football freshman year.” Hayden’s plans after high school are to go to college. Hayden is going to miss “playing football.”

Caden has been playing football since junior year, which is 2 years. Caden's favorite part about DeKalb is the community. Caden's plans after high school are to “go to college and find a job.” Being a senior and moving on from high school is not always easy. Caden will miss “coming to school everyday and hanging out with my friends.” Caden Weinman
Austin has been playing football since sophomore year, which is three years. Senior year can always be bittersweet, so looking back on memories can always help. Austin’s favorite memory is “hanging out with my friends.” Austin's plans after high school is to “buy my own body shop.” Austin will miss football the most. Austin Bramble
Drake has been playing football since kindergarten, which would be 13 years. Drake’s favorite memory from football is when “Mr. J came into the locker room after our district win and just started screaming.” Drake doesn’t know what he wants to do after high school. “I’m still figuring it out,” he said. RUSHVILLE DAYS FALL FESTIVAL FUN FOR ALL AGES! By: Helaina Geoffroy and Mekayla Boydston Everybody has different ways to celebrate Halloween. But, in Rushville, we have a town-wide celebration, Rushville Days. It is finally spooky season, and every couple of years, we have a little celebration, with hayrides and smores. But, covid changed everything. This year is the first year since Covid started that we were able to celebrate Halloween. This is Ondrea Cardwell’s first year helping to organize this event. She started in March preparing for the Rushville Days event they had in May, with the event donations going towards the playground at the ballfield. There was a good crowd, with kids who looked like they enjoyed every part of it. The best part was the Ghostbusters showing up and the Axe Factor. The hardest part was cleaning up but also finding the right amount of volunteers and putting everything together. “I would find more people to help so it is less to do on the day of, and it’s easier for everyone," Ondrea recalled. Josie Long, a student from De Kalb who attended the festival says “It was really fun, and I would definitely do it again.” So if you're interested in future events you can stay updated on the Rushville Days Facebook page. The Rushville Days crew hopes to see you at the next event in May.
MR WHITE'S BOOK OF THE WEEK If you go into Mr. White's room during his free time, you can most likely see him reading. This week he is reading The Long Moonlight by Razor Fist for the second time. Mr. White would recommend this book to some other readers because “It's not really popular and if you can understand the old stuff then it would be good.” Mr white's favorite part of the book is the "The conspiracies". PAWS DAY ARRIVES AT DE KALB BY ABIGAIL MILLER
De Kalb Middle / High School has started a new tradition, taking a practice ACT or PSAT. What goes into doing something like this is “finding a company to analyze the data and picking a date to do the test,” says Principal Tanner Lawson. The whole reason the school did this is “to see what we need to do to help the students do better,” says Ms. Hansbrough.

Taking the test on Friday might not have been the most comfortable thing ever, so “it would have been more comfortable if it was less cramped,” says Junior Landon Williams. Also, “getting a longer break would have made things a little better,” says 8th grader Donavan Caltrider. The school has already received the data back and teachers are beginning to analyze it and use it in their teaching. Students who tried hard on the test will be rewarded with a free day, like a MAP day. Students will also receive a free day for each subject area in which they met the benchmark. Halloween Kills Terrifies Viewers By: Helaina Geoffroy

Looking for a good horror movie this Halloween? Want a little fright? In the newly released Halloween Kills, A mentally ill mask-wearing man on a murdering spree comes back to Haddonfield, Illinois, to get revenge on survivors. The first time that Michael Myers was introduced to the Movie franchise was in 1978. Over these past 43 years, Michael’s appearance has changed from one thing to another. One reason Michael wears a mask is that Laurie Strode stabbed him in the eye with a clothes hanger in Halloween (1978). But, over time his mask changes a lot. In the first movie, his mask is white but by the time Halloween (2018) came out, he has scars and it is very dirty due to all the times he has killed and fought off people. Michael can overcome a lot. He has been shot more than 6 times over the whole series. Now, when you ask the audience what their opinion is, you hear different sides of the story. Some viewers leave a positive attitude and say the film did not disappoint, and some viewers have also said they have no clue how anyone would consider it a good movie. Others are stuck in the middle unsure about whether it’s really good or bad. I personally liked the movie e. Even though some attacks seemed very unhuman Every viewer (including me) is waiting for the next movie, Halloween Ends, to come out in 2022.

At De Kalb High School, you see all sorts of different hairstyles. According to votes from the De Kalb High School students, certain hairstyles stand out the most. By popular vote, Helaina Geoffroy won best female hairstyle at De Kalb High School. Helaina says “I’ve changed my hairstyle at least five times.” Hairstyle is an important part of who we are and how we express ourselves. Changing it at least once is always a fun experience, but Helaina likes to change her hair often with different styles and colors. According to Helaina “I didn't expect to win, but I feel really happy that I did.”
Another student with amazing hair from De Kalb High School is Brandon Griffin, winner of best male hair at De Kalb. He won by many votes and it surely wasn't a close tie with anyone else. Brandon says “I always win.” Well, he for sure won this time, seeing as most people at school think he has the best hair. Ava Donaldson was voted to have best hair for middle school girls, and Bode Griffin won for the middle school boys.
