THE POWER OF PAWS-ITIVITY BY MEKAYLA BOYDSTON

We’ve all heard about the power of positivity, but what does that really mean? To Mr. Wildhaber (Dubs) positivity is about not focusing on the negative and trying to stay positive by focusing on the good. “If you have negative thoughts and constantly focus on the negative, you'll never have a good day, so you can change your whole outlook on life by forcing yourself to have positive thoughts.” Science is on Dub’s side. Johns Hopkins reports that “just a simple smile, even a fake one, ”has a big effect on positivity. You can trick yourself into being more positive by forcing yourself to think good thoughts more and think bad thoughts less. We can never have too much positivity at De Kalb High School, and sometimes we need more positivity. So we should all smile more, think positive thoughts, and as Dubs always says, “Good vibes only.”

INSIGHT INTO DE KALB'S HOMECOMING KING AND QUEEN BY TRICIA SIMPSON AND HELAINA GEOFFROY This year’s Homecoming Queen was Carissa Martin. Carissa has been involved in softball, basketball, track, FBLA, and FFA for four years. Carissa started these activities to “hangout with [...] friends and to stay busy throughout the year.” Out of many activities it’s sometimes hard to pick one favorite, so Carissa has two. Her favorites are softball and track. Carrisa's favorite memory from softball is from this year. “There was a baby walking around behind the fence, so I stopped the game and someone had to go get him.” Carissa's favorite memory from track is from sectionals her freshman year. “We were doing hand off practice and I fell on my sweatpants and face planted into the track.” During class meetings, Carissa found out she was going to be a candidate. “I was excited because I was going to get to buy a new dress.” On homecoming night Carissa wanted to win for an unusual reason: “I was standing by myself because Hayden had won king and I didn’t really want to stand by myself.” Whenever Carissa’s name was announced as queen, she felt good because “Again, I didn’t like standing by myself.” Carissa also wanted to add “World Peace.”

This year’s Homecoming King was Hayden Generaux. When Generaux was selected as a candidate he felt happy. Generaux has participated in football and baseball for 4 years now. “My favorite memory was team dinners,” Genereaux recalled. Generaux decided to do football because it is “fun.” On October 1st, when he was announced as the king, he felt “happy and good.” Pictured Left to Right: Senior Hayden Generaux and Senior Carissa Martin

INSIGHT INTO DE KALB'S HOMECOMING PRINCE AND PRINCESS BY TRICIA SIMPSON AND HELAINA GEOFFROY This year's homecoming prince was Zander Matson. Zander has been involved in football, basketball, baseball, and FFA since freshman year. Zander started these activities because of the small numbers and “That’s all there is to do.” Despite doing many activities at De Kalb, Zander’s favorite sport is football. “My favorite memory from football is when it hailed on us during practice.” During class meetings, Zander found out he was going to be a candidate for the prince royalty and he didn’t have much of an opinion on it. “It was whatever.” During Homecoming night, though, his feelings had changed. “Waiting to find out who the prince was, I was anxious.” When Zander’s name was announced as homecoming prince, he was surprised. “I thought it was going to be Brody.”

On October 1st four princess candidates lined up on the field waiting for one of their names to be called. After a couple of long minutes of waiting, one out of four names was called. Lainie Vogan was crowned princess. Vogan has gone to De Kalb all her life. Vogan has been involved in cheer for 2 years and softball for 3 years. “My favorite memory is when Tori tripped over the base at practice,” Vogan recalls. She started doing these activities so she didn't have to sit at home during her free time and didn't have to be lazy. On October 1st she was announced as the princess, “she felt excited and overwhelmed.” Pictured left to right: Junior Zander Matson, Junior Lainie Vogan

STACY'S BOOK OF THE WEEK During her downtime, if you go into to office, there is a high possibility you will see Stacy reading. This week she is reading The Other Emily by Dean Koontz. Stacy is 80% into the book, and she would recommend this it to other readers because “If you like mystery and serial killer books, then it will be good.” Stacy wanted to add that "The last two days I've been reading the book, I couldn't put it down because I'm almost to the climax. When I started reading the book before work this morning, I couldn't put it down."

THE BOYS OF TRAP SHOOT BY ABIGAIL MILLER

One of the lesser known sports in De Kalb is trap shoot. “Five of you stand in your own stations and call pull. Then they shoot a clay pigeon (a clay disc), and it's supposed to mimic the flight of a bird,” said junior Brody Knorr For the freshmen at De Kalb, trap shoot is all about shooting and getting practice for duck season. “I like being able to shoot,” said freshman Luke Miller. “I like how It helps me get practice for duck season,” said freshman Jacob Vogan. The juniors may also enjoy shooting and being outdoors, but for the juniors it's more about trying for 50 and teaching the younger generation. “It’s fun to try to do, and I like to strive to get that 50.” said Knorr. “I like being able to teach the younger generation so they know how to shoot when they get into high school,” said Junior Brayton Furr.

Getting to know Ms. Brunkhorst By: Abigail Miller

Everyone has heard of the new student teacher from Nebraska. But how much do they really know about her? Ms. Brunkhorst is here student teaching Agricultural Science with Mr. Medsker. Ms. Brunkhorst's future career goals brought her to De Kalb. “I ended up student teaching at De Kalb because me and my husband moved to St.Joe and De Kalb was the school closest to where we live with a great ag program.” Ms. Brunkhorst is not originally from Missouri. “I grew up in Lincoln Nebraska.I went to Lincoln Southeast, and I go to the University of Nebraska Lincoln,” said Ms. Brunkhorst. So far, Ms. Brunkhorst is enjoying her time in De Kalb. “I really like it. The students are good, kids super bright and smart. They’re friendly. They’re easy to teach, and the staff is super nice, really accommodating really, welcoming. It's a good place to work,” said Ms. Brunkhorst. Ms. Brunkhorst says the best thing that's happened to her this year is “ coaching the trap shoot team. i'm helping advise the FFA chapter, and i'm teaching all six classes right now. But also, getting to know students has been a really fun thing to do.” Ms. Brunkhorst wanted to become a teacher because “I wanted to help people understand where their food comes from. I grew up with farmers in my family and my friends' families, and so finding out that some people don't know where their food comes from scared me. It's scary having a 30 year old tell you chocolate milk comes from brown cows,” says Mrs. Brunkhorst. After she finishes her student teaching here, she will graduate in December 2021 and plans on subbing temporarily and hopefully later becoming a teacher.
