DE KALB GIRLS BRING HOME ANOTHER TROPHY BY JAXON HARRIS The girls team took home another second place trophy. The De Kalb boys and girls basketball team played in the King City tournament from January 24 to the 28th. They played against three other schools: Northeast Nodaway, Stewartville-Osborn, and Stanberry. The De Kalb girls basketball team went and took home a second place trophy out of the three teams. Coach Reagan wanted to take home the win but the girls had a tough game with Stanberry, losing by 18 points. Coach Reagan noted that “we could have worked on our post-defense.” She didn't want to change much after the ending of the great tournament. She also said that their “intensity could have been better.” The De Kalb boys basketball team didn't place in the tournament. They lost the first two games against the Stanberry and Osborn-Stewartville teams. Coach Wildhaber wanted to take home some more wins. He thought "Our defense and team work could have been better.” The boys did think that they could have played better but defense needs some work. Sophomore Devin Hall stated that the boys team could have "kept their head on right and played as a team." You can catch both teams playing their next game tonight at 6:00 pm against the Osborn-Stewartsville teams. If you wish to know their entire schedule you can always check the MSHSAA website.

Love Use it in a Sentence:
El amor está en el aire .
SPOTLIGHT ON COACH REAGAN BY TRICIA SIMPSON
Ms. Reagan is currently the head coach for the High School Girls Basketball team. She was the assistant coach for four years, but now has been the head coach for three years. Ms. Reagan played basketball from third grade year until she graduated from high school. During her high school years, she had a coach who inspired her to become a coach. Ms. Reagan also wanted to be a coach because she “loves the game and the memories." Ms. Reagan is also the Spanish teacher at DeKalb, so having to teach all day and then go straight to practice or a game can be very time consuming. Nobody really sees all the time and commitment that goes into being a high school basketball coach and being a teacher.

Even if there are hard times while being a coach, there are a lot of good things that make up for the hard times. Ms. Reagan’s favorite part about being a coach is “seeing growth in the team and the players and finally achieving stuff after a lot of hard work." Being a head coach isn’t easy, but Mrs. Reagan makes it work and our girls basketball team wouldn’t be the same without her.

SPOTLIGHT ON COACH "DUBS" BY TRICIA SIMPSON
Mr. Wildhaber, aka "Dubs," is currently the High School Boys Basketball head coach with assistance from the new student teacher, Coach Gary. Coach Dubs started coaching when he was in high school for youth teams as a volunteer coach. Dubs has been coaching 8 years in total. He has been coaching for four years at DeKalb, as an assistant coach and head coach.
Before Coach Dubs stopped playing his sophomore year, he had a really good coach and that made him want to be a coach. Coach Dubs is also the history teacher for 7th and 8th grade. He also teaches sophomores. Being a teacher while teaching teenagers all day isn’t the easiest job. People only see the basketball games, the fun parts. Something that people don’t talk about that coaches also help with is “their grades, their attitude, and their home problems”.

If you have ever talked to Coach Dubs, you would recognize that he is a very positive person and always wants to help people. He doesn’t just help his players on the court; he helps them become better people and better players. Coach Dubs' favorite part about coaching is “When you’re working with someone and they can’t figure something out and they eventually do it. Then they go out on the court and be successful." Having a coach that cares about you as a person and a player is something you should never take for granted because not everyone is lucky enough to have a coach like Dubs.
TRICIA SIMPSON'S BOOK OF THE WEEK BY TRICIA SIMPSON
De Kalb has students who never quit reading, and one of those students is freshman Tricia Simpson. If you see Tricia, she will most likely be reading or carrying a book around. The book she chose to share this week is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. She is reading this book and she is on page 115. She recommends it because "If you like current world issues, and if you like to read about crime stuff this book will be good for you." She also adds " The movie is good too." FEBRUARY 11, 2022
