The De Kalb boys and girls basketball team played in the Osborn Invitational Tournament from January 10 through January 13. It was played with three other schools: Polo, Penney, and North Platte. The girls’ team ended up winning second place The De Kalb girls basketball team has had a great season so far, and coach Reagan wanted to lead her team with a 2 to 1 win ratio in the OIT tournament. The tournament was tough. They played a great few games but lost polo in the last game, earning them second place. Coach Regan stated, “I don't believe there is anything that we would do differently. We will continue to use our past game performances to help make improvements throughout the remainder of the season.” The boys team played on until the consolation game but did not place. Coach Wildhaber thought that they could have done a lot better than they did . According to Coach Wildhaber, “We need to work on our energy to start the game and our defense.” They played three games, lost their first and last, and won their second game against Penny’s JV team. The players wanted to change some things. An example is Caden Weinmann, who would change “how they played as a team” because they feel they lost their game because of that mistake. You can catch both teams in their upcoming games at Northeast Nodaway on January 24 As always, dates and times will be posted on the district website.

QUARANTINE STRIKES DE KALB BY HELAINA GEOFFROY Over the past four weeks that we have been in session after Christmas break, multiple cases of Covid have come and knocked on the school doors. This means that many students have had to be quarantined, including all but two freshmen. Quarantined means Distance Learning using Google Meet. This comes with both advantages and disadvantages. Freshman Shyann Nowak says that “I like it because I’m on my own time and it's easier to focus.” Sophomore Jaxon Harris agrees with Shyann that “It’s easier to focus on and there are not a lot of people in your ear.” It’s also easier to work at your own pace.

But, there are some disadvantages that can get in the way. Freshman Samara Martin says that “It has made me behind on a lot of homework. She also had to deal with "not having fun or being bored." Shyann also saw disadvantages too. “I don’t like it because it’s a lot harder to do work and turn it in .” Even though the disadvantages put us sometimes get in the way, at least we can get online and check and have access to our work, like in the past, when we had to go around to every teacher and pick up assignments.

SNEAK PEEK AT COURTWARMING BY ABIGAIL MILLER Students always have a favorite celebration. Most will say prom and others will say homecoming but what about courtwarming? Courtwarming is a celebration for basketball referred to as “winter homecoming," “hoopcoming," and sometimes “coronation.” Usually courtwarming, like many other school events, includes activities planned by the Student Council. Our student council here at De Kalb has planned some fun activities for us, such as hallway decorating, dress up days, a senior faculty game, and pep assembly. Last week, the Student Council and NHS sold shirts for courtwarming in preparation for the big day.

Most of these activities will take place throughout the week. To show school spirit, you can participate in the dress up days, help decorate the hallways, and of course, attend the Homecoming game and dance on Friday, February 11. If you would like to know more, you can talk to Natalyn Killoren president of student council or any other Student Council member.
ABIGAIL MILLER'S BOOK OF THE WEEK BY MEKAYLA BOYDSTON
De Kalb has students who never quit reading, and one of those students is sophomore Abigail Miller. If you see Abby, she will most likely be reading or carrying a book around. The book she chose to share this week is The Lovely and the Lost by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, She is reading this book for the second time and she recommends it because "It's like and adventure book with some mystery and if you like dogs that's a plus, the author also has an amazing way of getting you hooked." she also adds " There needs to be a sequel." SCHOLAR BOWL IS VICTORIOUS BY TRICIA SIMPSON Last Thursday on January 21, the Middle School Scholar Bowl team traveled to Graham, Missouri. They took on multiple teams and still came out victorious with a 2-1 score. 7th Grader Josie Long says, “I did ehhh.” Even if one person’s performance wasn’t the best, the middle school team has many people and the team all helps in a way. If someone gets a question wrong, someone else bounces back and gets the next one right to help out their team.

On January 27th, the Middle School Scholar Bowl team traveled to Jefferson to compete in their last meet. They came out winning one and losing two. In their challenge against Rockport, it was intense and went into overtime. It came down to whoever answered the question right, and Rockport got it first. This season, the team came out with more wins than losses. They were 7-5. Their season is over, but stay tuned to see the high school team take on their season.

In addition to their eight classes a day, many teens have jobs after school or on the weekends. About 20 students at De Kalb have a job outside of school. “I work every day after school,” says sophomore Lathan Goddard, who works for Armstrong Heating and Cooling and helps a couple farmers on the weekend. sophomore Kaylee Layton, who works at Culvers, “I work 16 hours a week.” Most students get homework they have to take home to complete, which is more difficult if they have a job after school . “I have less time to get homework done,” says Layton. On the other hand, the extra money is always an added benefit. ”I really love the discount I get on chicken tenders working there and their bussin” says Layton. In conclusion, juggling school and a job isn't always the easiest thing to do, especially when you have to juggle three or more jobs like Goddard. However for many students the benefits outweigh the challenges. JANUARY 28, 2022
