KEYNOTE Mark Hermans Retired President, Microsoft Business Unit, Argano LLC
Mark Hermans is a business and technology leader whose career is a testament to the power of applied learning. He is a proud graduate of the BCIT Operations Management program (class of 1989). Mark’s journey from BCIT to the executive suites of global technology firms is one defined by a passion for learning, a desire to lead others, and a drive to deliver real-world impact. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Mark held senior leadership roles across three continents, including Senior Vice President at UXC Eclipse, Chief Operating Officer at Arbela Technologies, and President of the Microsoft Business Unit at Argano, a global business and technology services firm. Throughout his career, he specialized in ERP transformation, supply chain management, and guiding organizations through complex digital change. Since transitioning into partial retirement at the end of 2025, Mark now advises local technology companies, bringing executive-level expertise to help founders and leadership teams build smarter, scale faster, and lead with intention. Mark has maintained strong connections with local post-secondary institutions since graduating. He has taught various courses at BCIT and continues to mentor MBA students at UBC Sauder School of Business. His proudest BCIT connection is a personal one; his daughter Brooklyn followed in his footsteps, graduating from the Operations Management program in 2019. The two recently shared the spotlight together as part of the program’s 50 th anniversary celebration. To the graduates here today, Mark’s story is proof that where you start shapes everything about where you can go.

Her broad portfolio of responsibilities spans the full employee lifecycle, including talent acquisition and onboarding, total rewards and benefits strategy, payroll operations, global mobility and immigration services, employee engagement initiatives, and the development of programs that support workforce wellbeing, inclusion, and professional growth. With more than two decades of leadership experience in the visual effects and animation industry, Laurie serves as a trusted strategic partner to executive leadership, shaping forward-thinking people and organizational strategies that drive business transformation, operational excellence, and long-term growth. Recognized for her ability to cultivate high-performing, people-centered cultures, she is a dedicated champion leading initiatives that foster innovation, belonging, and opportunity across every level of the organization. Before joining Imageworks, Laurie served as Human Resources Director at Digital Domain for six years and spent 15 years as Human Resources Advisor at Technicolor. KEYNOTE John McCarthy Vice President, McCarthy Properties
John McCarthy is Vice President of McCarthy Properties responsible for all management, operations, and leasing of the firm’s privately held real estate portfolio. John holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from BCIT and graduated first in his class in the BCIT Marketing Management (Professional Real Estate Option) program. John is the recipient of the Real Estate Council of BC Award in Professional Real Estate, the BCIT Award of Excellence in Directed Studies Program, and the Anne Lippert Achievement Award. John is a Real Estate Trading Services Licensee, a Certified Leasing Officer and Fellow of the Real Estate Institute and holds an RI Designation. He is also the recipient of the 2024 Real Estate Institute of British Columbia RI Medal of Excellence Emerging Leader. John is currently enrolled in the ICD-Rotman Directors Education Program. Actively involved in his community, John has extensive experience in healthcare philanthropy, having previously served as Chair of the BC Cancer Foundation. He currently serves on the Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s Fundraising Cabinet. In 2022, he was elected to Honourary Membership of St. Michael’s Centre Society and elected by the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society as an Honourary Firefighter. John is currently the Co-Chair of the MLA Business and Economic Leadership Council and has been appointed to the Mayor’s Task Force on Burnaby Economic Growth and Resilience. He is also the recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025. McCarthy Properties was inducted into the Burnaby Business Hall of Fame in 2025. John lives with his wife Alaiza, a Senior Aquarium Biologist at the Vancouver Aquarium. They live together with their newborn son, William. He is passionate about strengthening local communities through his work in real estate and philanthropy.

A graduate of BCIT’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program, Nigel built his career in the energy sector, working on oil spill response planning in nine countries, including Alaska following the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Early in his career, while flying over the Red Sea with a helicopter pilot, Nigel witnessed severe environmental degradation along the coastline. As they surveyed the damage, the pilot asked, “Do you really think you can make a difference?” That question has stayed with him for over 40 years and continues to drive his work today. In 1992, Nigel co-founded Aqua-Guard Spill Response Inc., now a global leader in marine oil spill response technology, with systems deployed in over 105 countries and used on most of the world’s largest spill responses. Nigel understands that the world will always have a growing demand for energy. The real challenge—and opportunity—is ensuring we produce and manage energy in ways that sustain future generations and protect life on our planet. His “why” and the mission behind Aqua-Guardis: to protect our planet’s most precious resource—clean water. A long-time member of Entrepreneurs’ Organization and MIT Gathering of Titans, Nigel continues to collaborate with leaders advancing innovation and sustainability around the globe. He also co-founded GIFTADD.com and actively supports organizations like Covenant House Vancouver. An avid adventurer, Nigel lives between Vancouver and Whistler with his wife Rieko, continuing to inspire others to take risks, pursue purpose, and make a difference.

KEYNOTE Trevor Clark Co-Founder and CTO, Industrio AI
Trevor Clark is a proud BCIT alum, having graduated from both the Diploma and Bachelor of Technology programs. He has over 25 years of experience designing, building, and managing the software and IT teams behind systems that solve real business challenges. As Co-Founder and CTO of Industrio AI, he develops an AI-driven platform that integrates seamlessly into existing operations, helping organizations tackle inefficiencies, unlock data insights, and achieve measurable results. Under Trevor’s leadership, Industrio is building a common operating platform for the FIFA World Cup for the City of Vancouver. He also leads the development of Signal, Industrio’s operational intelligence platform, which gives organizations a unified, real-time view across their operations and turns fragmented data into decisions they can act on. Prior to Industrio, he led IT strategy for Microsoft in Western Canada and spent a decade in the video game industry. His career spans start-ups to global enterprises, united by one focus: delivering technology that is scalable, practical, and aligned with real-world goals. From the classrooms of BCIT to platforms powering one of the world’s biggest sporting events, Trevor’s path reflects the curiosity, craft, and resilience that transform a strong technical foundation into a career of lasting impact. Born and raised in BC, Trevor comes from a family of BCIT alumni, including his parents, wife, and extended family. He and his wife are raising two kids in the Lower Mainland, where weekends are often spent cycling, at the dance studio, or on the soccer pitch.

KEYNOTE Kim Haakstad President and CEO, BC Council of Forest Industries
Kim Haakstad is President and CEO of the BC Council of Forest Industries (COFI), the leading voice for BC’s Forest sector. COFI represents companies vital to BC’s economy, producing lumber, pulp and paper, and bioenergy while championing sustainable forest management and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. With over 20 years of experience at the intersection of business and government, Kim previously served as VP of External Relations at a cleantech firm and held senior advisory roles in the BC government, including Deputy Chief of Staff to the Premier and Chief of Staff to Cabinet Ministers. She has provided strategic guidance to businesses across a wide range of industries. Kim holds a BA in Political Science and a Graduate Diploma in Business Management. She serves on the Board of the Digital Supercluster and the board for the Mom2Mom Child Poverty Initiative, reflecting her dedication to innovation and community impact.
